Under lockdown, however, I’ve only had my partner, Peter. We not only lived, worked and traveled together, but mostly socialized together, too. Under the first UK lockdown, our constant closeness began to feel uncomfortable. For the first time in our 10 years together, we needed to be alone. I tried to manufacture this by going on walks on my own, but a short walk in the local park wasn’t doing the job. I considered my options and hit upon an idea: the semi-solo hike. Could we do a circular hike but walk in different directions? This would give us the space and peace of a solo hike. It felt like a promising compromise, so I told him about it. He thought it was thoroughly silly but agreed to give it a try.We started with a four-mile loop(环形) from Reeth. At the start, we parted ways. At first, I was aware of how close we were, which lessened the appeal Walking alone offers freedom and alone time, but here I was with my boyfriend nearby. As I gained ground, however, I found myself very much alone. I set my own pace, and I decided to take my time.I sat on a rock and breathed out. That moment —with the weak sun through the clouds and the breeze blowing across makeshift pools —felt extraordinary to me. I was born and raised in London and had never imagined leaving until I met an outdoorsman. Now, my former life as a city girl felt crazy. Realizing what I had gained, I felt the tension leave me. There, in the chilly air, I no longer needed to talk. The semi-solo hike gave us a shared experience with added room to breathe. I didn’t see Peter on route but reunited back where we started, both of us sheepish (难为情的) but pleased. The semi-solo hike is admittedly silly in theory, but for me it has been a lifeline. It has given me the gift of time alone and, in a year of constant closeness, the joy of reuniting.24. Why did the author decide to do a semi-solo hike?A. To get rid of the lockdown.B. To find some individual space.C. To meet more people to socialize.D. To seek the pleasure of reuniting.25. How did the author feel at the beginning of the hike?A. Curious.B. Thrilled.C. Unsatisfied.D. Relaxed.26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A. Interest is the best teacher.B. Exercise helps increase confidence.C. Living in the city limits our imagination.D. An appropriate distance creates happiness.27. What is the best title for the text?A. Hiking TogetherB. Spending Time ApartC. Taking Exercise AloneD. Reuniting with My PartnerCWith an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe’s future leader in green hydrogen production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution because this process relies on massive availability of zero-carbon electivity.Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn’t produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0. 1% of global hydrogen production is currently created in this way.The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia (氨) and chemical products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping and aviation sectors.Spain’s large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2, 500 hours of sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore green hydrogen production.“If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years, it’s in two countries, Spain and Portugal,” said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal Ambition, an industry platform bringing together 30 companies. “Hydrogen is the new oil.”Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end model for hydrogen production, distribution and supply at a competitive price. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen’s higher cost compared with highly-polluting “gray hydrogen” drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete.Globally, Lepercq said, “Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is not electrified? ... You need to replace those fossil fuels. Not in 50 years’ time. You need to replace them now.”28. Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain?A. It needs large amounts of sun and wind.B. It has an effect on heavy industries.C. It causes conflicts among countries.D. It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity.29. What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain?A. Ideal geographical conditions.B. The support from government.C. Hydrogen production technology.D. Well-developed public transports.30. What can be inferred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq?A. It is highly priced.B. It is easy to store.C. It is competitive.D. It is highly-polluting.31. What is the passage mainly about?A. Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity.B. Spain struggles to lead EU in heavy industry.C. Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution.D. Spain replaces fossil fuel with green hydrogen.DSearch “toxic parents”, and you’ll find more than 38, 000 posts, largely urging young adults to cut ties with their families. The idea is to safeguard one’s mental health from abusive parents. However, as a psychoanalyst (精神分析学家), I’ve seen that trend in recent years becomes a way to manage conflicts in the family, and I have seen the severe impacts estrangement(疏远) has on both sides of the divide. This is a self-help trend that creates much harm.“Canceling” your parent can be seen as an extension of a cultural trend aimed at correcting imbalances in power and systemic inequality. Today’s social justice values respond to this reality, calling on us to criticize oppressive and harmful figures and to gain power for those who have been powerless. But when adult children use the most effective tool they have —themselves —to gain a sense of security and ban their parents from their lives, the roles are simply switched, and the pain only deepens.Often, what I see in my practice are cases of family conflict mismanaged, power dynamics turned upside down rather than negotiated. I see the terrible effect of that trend: situations with no winners, only isolated humans who long to be known and feel safe in the presence of the other. The catch is that after estrangement, adult children are not suddenly less dependent. In fact, they feel abandoned and betrayed, because in the unconscious, it doesn’t matter who is doing the leaving; the feeling that remains is “being left”. They carry the ghosts of their childhood, tackling the emotional reality that those who raised us can never truly be left behind, no matter how hard we try. What I have found is that most of these families need repair, not permanent break-up How can one learn how to negotiate needs, to create boundaries and to trust? How can we love others, and ourselves, if not through accepting the limitations that come with being human? Good relationships are the result not of a perfect level of harmony but rather of successful adjustments. To pursue dialogue instead of estrangement will be hard and painful work. It can’t be a single project of “self-help”, because at the end of the day, real intimacy (亲密关系) is achieved by working through the injuries of the past together. In most cases of family conflict, repair is possible and preferable to estrangement —and it’s worth the work.32. Why do young people cut ties with the family?A. To gain an independent life.B. To restore harmony in the family.C. To protect their psychological well-being.D. To follow a tendency towards social justice.33. What does the underlined word “catch” in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Response.B. Problem.C. Operation.D. Emphasis.34. To manage family conflict, the author agrees that young adults should ________.A. break down boundariesB. gain power within the familyC. live up to their parents’ expectationsD. accept imperfection of family members35. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To advocate a self-help trend.B. To justify a common social value.C. To argue against a current practice.D. To discuss a means of communication.

1Yuan Longping: The Father of Hybrid RiceHave you ever heard of Yuan Longping? He was a really smart scientist and professor who loved studying plants. He lived from 1930 to 2021 and spent most of his life working on a special kind of rice called hybrid rice. Yuan Longping's work helped feed a lot of people in China and around the world!Yuan Longping was born in a small village in Hunan Province, China. When he was young, he had to quit school and work on the farm with his family because they didn't have much money. But even as a kid, Yuan loved learning about plants and how they grew. After a few years, Yuan was able to go back to school. He studied really hard and did great. In 1953, he went to an agricultural university to learn more about plants and farming. That's when he first started researching hybrid rice. What is hybrid rice? It's a super type of rice made by breeding two different kinds of rice plants together. The baby rice plants grow up big and strong, and they make way more rice than regular rice plants! But creating hybrid rice is really hard. For many years, scientists had tried and failed to make good hybrid rice. Yuan Longping spent decades testing all kinds of different rice breeds. He worked day and night, never giving up, because he knew hybrid rice could help end hunger. Finally, in 1973, Yuan had a breakthrough! He figured out the perfect way to breed hybrid rice plants. The first crops of his hybrid rice made 20% more rice than regular kinds. As the years went on, he kept improving it to make even higher yields.Yuan's hybrid rice was a huge success in China. It helped increase the country's rice production by millions of tons every year. That was enough extra food to feed 60 million people! Soon, farmers all over the world started growing Yuan's hybrid rice too.In the 1990s, Yuan helped take hybrid rice to places like India, Vietnam, the United States, and more. His work allowed these countries to grow much more rice and better feed their people. Many experts say Yuan's hybrid rice helped save a billion people from going hungry!Yuan Longping worked hard his whole life to create and improve hybrid rice. He was awarded lots of prizes and honors for his amazing achievements, like the World Food Prize which is like a Nobel Prize for food and agriculture. In 2021, when Yuan was 91 years old, he sadly passed away. But his legacy and life's work will keep helping people for many years to come. Yuan dreamed of a world without hunger, and his hybrid rice got us much closer to that goal.Yuan once said, "As long as I breathe, I'll keep studying hybrid rice." His incredible passion, perseverance, and kindness changed lives all over the planet. Yuan Longping was a true hero who helped solve one of the world's biggest challenges - how to feed our growing population. We can all learn from his story about the importance of hard work, scientific curiosity, and making the world a better place.篇2My Hero Yuan LongpingHave you ever heard of Yuan Longping? He is a really cool scientist from China who helped solve world hunger. Yuan Longping is my hero because he was a hardworking and caring person who made a huge difference in the world.Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in Beijing, China. When he was young, his family didn't have a lot of money. There were times when they didn't have enough food to eat. This made Yuan Longping understand how difficult it is to go hungry. He decided he wanted to grow up and find ways to produce more food so people wouldn't go hungry. In school, Yuan Longping was a very good student. He especially liked science and learning about plants. After finishing university, he became a agricultural scientist. That means he studied plants and how to grow more food crops like rice.Rice is a very important food for people in Asia and many other parts of the world. However, the types of rice plants that existed couldn't produce enough rice to feed all the people. Yuan Longping had a big idea - he wanted to create new species or types of rice that would produce a lot more rice per plant. In the 1960s, Yuan Longping began doing experiments to try to create these new super rice plants. He spent years crossbreeding different kinds of rice plants. Crossbreeding means combining the traits of two different plants to create an new type with the best traits from both parents. It's kind of like making a new type of dog by mixing different breeds of dogs.Yuan Longping's first big success came in 1973 when he created a new species of rice called semidwarf rice. Semidwarf means it was a shorter plant. This was good because shorter plants can get more nutrients and don't fall over easily. His semidwarf rice produced 20% more rice than regular rice plants! That was a huge breakthrough that helped increase food supplies. But Yuan Longping didn't stop there. He wanted to create even better species of rice. In 1986 he had another major breakthrough by creating the first hybrid rice. Hybrid means it combined the genetics of two different types of rice plants. This hybrid rice produced 30% more rice than regular plants!Over the next few decades, Yuan Longping and his team continued researching and creating even better hybrid rice species. Their hybrid rice could produce 40-50% more rice than regular varieties. Some are even more productive than that! Their work helped make sure there was enough rice to feed people as the world's population kept growing.Yuan Longping's rice has had a massive impact around the world. His hybrid varieties now make up over 50% of the total rice production in China, which feeds over 1 billion people. His rice is also grown in many other countries to help feed hundredsof millions more people. Experts estimate that Yuan Longping's work has helped provide enough food for over 80 million people who would have gone hungry! In 2004, Yuan Longping's work was finally recognized internationally when he won the World Food Prize, which is like the Nobel Prize for food and agriculture. Even in his 70s and 80s, Yuan Longping kept working hard to create better rice until he passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.Not only was Yuan Longping brilliant at science, but he also truly cared about helping people and ending hunger. He came from a poor family, so he knew what it felt like to go hungry. Even after becoming a famous scientist, Yuan Longping stayed very humble and kind. He wanted to share his discoveries to benefit as many people as possible around the world. Some of my favorite quotes from Yuan Longping are: "What I am doing is pursuing dreams: dreams for Chinese people, dreams for human beings all over the world," and "As long as I am still living, I will go on doing scientific research on hybrid rice." These quotes show how he worked so hard because he cared about people and wanted to make the world better.Yuan Longping is a true hero in my eyes. Through his hard work, brilliance, and kind heart, he was able to create new typesof rice that have helped feed hundreds of millions of people. He made the world a better place by making sure there was enough food for everyone. I hope I can grow up to be as hardworking, caring and impactful as Yuan Longping was.篇3My Hero: Yuan LongpingDo you know who Yuan Longping is? He is a famous scientist in China who helped make sure people have enough food to eat. Yuan Longping worked very hard his whole life to grow better kinds of rice. Because of him, more people in the world don't have to go hungry. Let me tell you all about this amazing man!Yuan Longping was born in 1930 in a small village in Hunan Province, China. When he was young, his family was very poor. They were farmers and didn't have much money or food. Little Longping often felt hungry as a child. He dreamed of finding a way to grow more rice so people wouldn't have to starve. In 1953, Yuan Longping went to university to study agriculture. He learned all about different kinds of plants and how to grow them. Longping especially loved studying rice because it is such an important food for people in China and many other countries. After finishing university, Longping got a job as a scientist. His life's mission was to find new ways to grow more rice. You see, the type of rice grown in China could only be planted once per year during certain seasons. If the weather was bad that year, the whole rice crop might get ruined. Then people wouldn't have enough rice to eat!Yuan Longping had a brilliant idea - what if he could breed a new kind of rice that could grow multiple times per year instead of just once? That way, farmers could keep planting more rice crops even if one batch didn't grow well. It took him many years, but finally in 1973 he succeeded in making the world's first hybrid rice!Hybrid rice grows much taller and fuller than regular rice plants. The grains are bigger and more plentiful. Best of all, it can be planted more than once per year. This meant farmers could grow way more rice than before. Longping's hybrid rice helped provide more food for people across China. But Longping didn't stop there. He kept working hard to make his hybrid rice better and better over the years. He traveled all over China testing it in different climates and environments. Longping wanted to make sure his special rice could grow everywhere, even in very hot or cold places.Longping's rice was such a big success that he became a hero in China. He won many awards and got respected all over the world. Longping worked until he was 90 years old, always trying to improve his hybrid rice. Thanks to his hard work over 60 years, his rice now grows in many countries and helps feed millions of people!Yuan Longping is my hero because he never gave up on his dream, even when it was very difficult. He dedicated his entire life to helping make sure people wouldn't go hungry. Longping used science to solve a huge problem - lack of food - in a smart, creative way.Who knows, maybe someday I will grow up to be a scientist like Longping! They serve as guideposts, reminding me of the importance of balance, mindfulness, and continuousself-improvement. With each passing day, I'm grateful for theopportunity to shape my life through these intentional practices, one step at a time.篇2Five Things I Do Every DayI'm a pretty typical student, which means my days are packed with classes, homework, activities, and trying to squeeze in some fun and relaxation time too. While every day is a bit different, there are five main things I do every single day without fail. Let me walk you through my daily routine.Have a Big BreakfastThey say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I wholeheartedly agree. I can't function properly without a hearty breakfast to start my morning. I have to eat something substantial and nutritious to fuel my brain and body for the long day ahead. My go-to breakfast is scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast, fresh fruit like bananas or berries, and a big glass of orange juice. Sometimes I'll mix it up with oatmeal, yogurt, or a vegetable omelet, but I always make sure to eat a protein-packed, fiber-rich, vitamin-filled breakfast. That big morning meal gives me the energy I need to power through my classes and activities. If I skip breakfast or just have something small like a granola bar, I become an unbearable combination of hangry, sluggish, and unable to concentrate by mid-morning. Fueling up with a proper breakfast makes such a difference in my productivity, focus, and overall positivity for the whole day. It's a daily habit I'll never break.Walk Everywhere on CampusOur university has a beautiful, sprawling campus filled with gorgeous old buildings, green spaces, walking paths, and libraries. While some students drive or take public transportation, I prefer walking everywhere I need to go on campus.I live just a few blocks from the main part of campus, so I start my day with a 15-minute walk to get my first cup of coffee and make my way to my morning classes. Then I'm walking to the library, the dining hall, club meetings, practice for the ultimate frisbee team, and anywhere else my schedule takes me that day.I log around 5 miles of walking every day, just from trekking all over campus. It's a great way to build exercise into my daily routine without even having to think about it. The fresh air and change of scenery between destinations also helps clear my mind when I'm feeling stressed or overwhelmed. My friends who drive often complain about the miserable traffic, terrible parking situations, and having to pay for an annual parking pass. I'd much rather get some steps in every single day. Walking across campus is a lifestyle habit I know I'll maintain long after graduating.Call My ParentsNo matter where I am or what I'm doing, I always make sure to call my parents every single day, even if it's just for a few minutes. We're a very close family, and my parents have been my biggest supporters through all my years of school.During our daily check-ins, I'll give them a rundown of my day's schedule, what I have coming up for homework and tests, and any other updates about school, work, extracurriculars, or my social life. We'll chat about current events, swap some jokes and stories, and they always make sure to remind me about upcoming family events or obligations. It's become such an ingrained habit that if the day is getting away from me and we haven't connected yet, my mom will call me to make sure everything's okay. Those calls are a little challenge to find a quiet spot on campus, but it's a small price to pay to stay closely connected to my family while being away at college. My parents have been there for me through every step of my academic journey, from dropping me off at kindergarten to now getting me settled into college life. Our daily chats are a way for me to stay grounded and remember where I came from, while also getting their sage advice and words of encouragement I always need to hear.Review My Schedule and To-Do ListsI'm the kind of person who loves making lists and being ultra-organized with my time. I have a planner, multiple to-do lists, and calendar alerts set up for every single day. Before bed each night, I spend at least 30 minutes carefully reviewing my schedule and to-do lists for the following day. This wind-down routine allows me to get all my ducks in a row, so to speak. I make sure I have all my academic assignments and projects accounted for, as well as any club meetings, social plans, work shifts, meals, exercise classes, errandsβbasicall y anything and everything I need to accomplish.I put together a detailed, hour-by-hour schedule that maps out exactly when and where I'll tackle each task, with specified time blocks for meals, transitions from place to place, and the occasional downtime too. This level of planning and timemanagement might seem overly rigid or intense to some, but it's a habit that helps reduce my stress and anxiety. When I wake up each morning, I already have total clarity on what I need to do and when I need to do it. No more feeling frazzled or dropping balls because I'm unsure of my commitments for the day. My evening routine of checking those schedules and lists sets me up for a focused, productive,low-stress day ahead.Read for Fun Before BedAfter a whirlwind day of classes, studying, practices, club meetings, and checking all those to-do lists, I make sure to carve out at least an hour before bedtime to simply read for pleasure. This peaceful end-of-night ritual is so important for my mental health and overall well-being.From a very young age, my parents instilled a deep love of reading in me. We made frequent trips to the library and bookstores, and reading stories together was a beloved family bonding activity when I was little. While the academic demands of college call for reading dense textbooks and journal articles much of the time, I've kept up the habit of reading for fun on a daily basis. In bed each night, I escape into the pages of the latest best-selling fiction novel, memoir, historical text, or othernon-required reading material that sparks my interests. Sometimes I'll read by soft lamplight with a hot mug of chamomile tea, other times I read on my e-reader to give my eyes a break from screens. Regardless of what I'm reading or what format it's in, those hours spent getting absorbed in those books are little oases of peace in my otherwise hectic days. This daily reading habit allows me to disconnect from the stresses of student life, flex my creativity and imagination muscles, get exposed to new perspectives, and simply enjoy the beauty and art of good writing. It's my way of winding down before lights out, calming my mind, and preparing forhigh-quality, restorative sleep that will have me refreshed and ready to tackle a new day together tomorrow. That's my daily routine in a nutshell! Though the specific timing, locations, and proportions fluctuate, those five things are the consistent pillars I build my days around. Having those steadfast habits like eating a nutritious breakfast, staying physically active, connecting with loved ones, carefully planning my schedule, and indulging in a beloved hobby anchors me and keeps my life balanced amid the organized chaos of college life. Here's to another day full of little rituals that bring structure, nourishment, and joy!篇3The Five Things I Do Every DayMan, I can't believe my English teacher just assigned us a 2000 word essay on the five things we do every day! That's gonna be a long one. I guess I better get cracking though since it's due next week. Where do I even start with something like this?Okay, I'll just go through my typical day and write about the main five things I do, one by one. I'm just your average high school student, so my days are probably pretty boring compared to like a celebrity or something. But everyone's daily routine is a little different, so maybe mine will be kind of interesting? Here goes nothing!Get Ready for SchoolThe first thing I do every single day is get ready for school. My alarm goes off at 6:30am and I pretty much want to die. Seriously, why do schools have to start so early?? I'm a zombie for the first few hours no matter what. But I drag myself out of bed and into the shower to try to wake myself up a little. After I'm showered and dressed, I head downstairs for breakfast. My mom is awesome and always makes me something nice like pancakes or eggs and bacon. I'd probably never eat a real breakfast if it wasn't for her! Then I brush my teeth, grab my backpack, and I'm out the door by 7:30. The bus picks me up right across the street which is super convenient.Go to SchoolOnce I'm on the bus, I throw in my earbuds and listen to music or watch videos on my phone for the 20 minute ride to school. I have to be at school by 8am for first period, but I usually get there a little early to hang out with my friends before class starts. The next roughly 7 hours of my day are spent doing the same boring routine at school - going from class to class, trying to stay awake while teachers drone on about stuff I'm never going to use in real life. The classes seriously all blend together after a while. And of course there's lots of homework and projects and tests to stress about constantly. But school isn't all bad I guess. I get to see my friends and we have a good laugh together. I'm on the basketball team too so practice after school a few days a week which is fun. Still, I'll be really happy when I finally graduate!Relax at HomeBy 3:30pm, the end of the school day finally comes around and I get to go home and relax a little bit. If I don't have basketball practice, I'll make myself a snack like nachos or a sandwich and then settle in for a couple hours of video games or watching YouTube or Netflix. Just some mindless entertainment to decompress from the boring school day, you know?My parents get home from work around 6pm and then it's family dinner time. We'll all sit down together and talk about our days and stuff which is cool. Having family time is important I guess, even if they drive me crazy sometimes! After dinner, there's usually a couple more hours of free time before I have to start thinking about homework.Do HomeworkAh yes, the worst part of every student's day - homework time. I'll be honest, I absolutely hate doing homework and constantly put it off until the last possible minute. But if I don't get it done, then I'll end up failing my classes which is obviously not an option. So sometime between 8-10pm, I'll begrudgingly pull out my books and try to plow through all the busy work my teachershave assigned. It feels like they just give us homework for the sake of giving us homework half the time! I usually have to do a couple hours of reading, solving math problems, writing essays, studying vocabulary - you name it. It's endless. To try to make it somewhat bearable, I always have music playing or the TV on in the background for some noise. And hey, I have to take breaks constantly to scroll through social media and procrastinate a little more! Eventually though, the homework always gets done one way or another, even if it takes me until midnight some nights.Get Ready for BedOnce I've survived the nightmarish homework session, it's finally time to get ready for bed! I'll take my nightly shower to wash off the exhaustion of the day, brush my teeth again, put on my pajamas and head to my room. You'd think I'd want to go right to sleep at this point, but of course not!The next hour or two is spent lying in bed doing absolutely nothing productive - just mindlessly scrolling through social media, watching YouTube videos, or messaging friends until my eyes can barely stay open anymore. It's my guilty little routine to unwind and let my brain totally veg out before falling asleep. Finally, around 1am, I've used up pretty much every last ounce of energy I have left for the day. I'll force myself to finally put my phone down, turn everything off, get cozy under my covers and let sleep take me away. Then I get to do it all over again tomorrow! Being a student is cooler than it sounds, right?Well, there you have it - the riveting five things this totally average student does every single day. Over 2000 words spent describing a pretty monotonous routine if I'm being honest. But hey, at least I got this dumb essay assignment out of the way! Thanks for coming along for the journey through a day in my life. Being a student is rough, but I'll survive!。

The results, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, surprised them. Taking photos actually makes people enjoy what they redoing more, not less.53. It works for things as boring as archaeological (考古的) museums, where people were given eye-tracking glasses and instructed either to take photos or not. "People look longer at things they want to photograph," Diehl says. They report liking the exhibits more, too.55. The physical act of the snap? No, they found just the act of planning to take a photo—and not actually taking it—had the same joy-boosting effect. "If you want to take mental photos, that works the same way," Diehl says. "Thinking about what you would want to photograph also gets you more engaged."46. What do we learn about chemist John Pemberton?A.He used a strangely potent ingredient in a food supplement.B.He create a drink containing alcohol without breaking law.C.He became notorious because of the coca drink he developed.D.He risked breaking local law to make a drink with coca leaves.1 You may have heard that coca-cola once contained an ingredient capable of sparking particular devotion in consumers: cocaine. the coca in the name referred to the extracts of coca leaf that the drink's originator chemist John Pemberton, mixed with his sugary syrup. At the time coca leaf extract mixed with wine was a common tonic, and Pemberton's sweet brew was a way to get around local laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol. but the other half of the name represents another ingredient, less infamous(名声不好的), perhaps, but also strangely potent: the kola nut.47. What does the passage say about kola nuts?A.Their commercial value was first discovered by Portuguese settlers.B.They contain some kind of energy boost not found in any other food.C.Many were shipped to Europe in the late 19th century for medicinal use.D.They were strange to the Europeans when first imported from West Africa.47. They also have heart stimulants.3 Historian Paul Lovejoy relates that the cultivation of kola nuts in West Africa is hundreds of years old. The leafy, spreading trees were planted on graves and as part of traditional rituals. Even though the nuts, which need to stay moist, can be somewhat delicate to transport, traders carried them hundreds of miles throughout the forests and grasslands.4 Europeans did not know of them until the 1500s, when Portuguese ships arrived on the coast of what is now Sierra Leone. And while the Portuguese took part in the trade, ferrying nuts down the coast along with other goods, by 1620, when English explorer Richard Johnson made his way up the Gambia, the nuts were still peculiar to his eyes.5 By the late 19th century, kola nuts were being shipped by the tonne to Europe and the US. Many made their way into medicines, a French product consisting of coca extract mixed with red wine. It was created by a French chemist, Angelo Mariani, in 1863. So when Pemberton created his drink, it represented an ongoing trend. When cocaine eventually fell from grace as a beverage ingredient, kola-extract colas became popular.48. As it grew more popular, the company sold rights to bottle the soda, so it could travel easily. Today about 1.9 billion Cokes are purchased daily. It’s become so iconic that attempts to change its taste in 1985 – sweetening it in a move projected to boost sales – proved disastrous, with widespread anger from consumers. “Coca-Cola Classic” returned to store shelves just three months after the “New Coke” was released.7 These days, the Coca-Cola recipe is a closely guarded secret. But it’s said to no longer contain kola nut extract, relying instead on artificial imitations to achieve the flavor.55. According to the passage, we can know that eBay_____.A.Is always recession-proofB.Is losing its credibilityC.Will continue to thrive in the downtownD.Is a site where we can trade with othersAlthough you’d think that eBay’s flagship marketplace business, a site where people go to buy and sell stuff, would flourish in a downturn, it has stopped growing. It’s still unclear how badly the credit crisis and buying slowdown will affect an e-commerce value site like eBay, which does half its business outside the U.S. During the 2001 recession, eBay’s marketplace continued to thrive because of its Web dominance and discounted goods. Whitman at the time even crowed that "eBay is to some extent recession-proof."4. Why does the eBay’s marketplace fell compared with one year ago?A.Because Google, Amazon and other retail sites take the eBay’s dominance.B.Because the business mode of eBay makes it lack of competitivenessC.Because the strength and popularity of eBay is decreasing graduallyD.Because the credit crisis affects eBay badly.4. In the third quarter, for the first time, transactions on eBay’s marketplace fell 1%, to $14.3 billion, from a year ago. The strength and popularity of Google’s search, Amazon’s sales and the sheer number of other Web retail sites have eroded eBay’s dominance, making it harder to compete with the same business model that steered the firm through its first 10 years of jaw-dropping growth. Three years ago, eBay boasted 30% more traffic than Amazon, but today its 84.5 million active users scarcely best Amazon’s 81 million customers. The troubled economy and weakness in eBay’s core business contributed to a 60% drop in market value this year. Amazon’s market cap topped eBay’s for the first time last summer. Its flagship stores in major U.S. cities depend heavily on international tourist spending, which shrank at many retailers due to a strong dollar. Meanwhile, Macy’s has simply struggled to lure consumers who are more interested in spending on travel or dining out than on new clothes or accessories.51. Although it is quite common for Chinese peop le to dream of an empowered or a prosperous(繁荣) China, most people also have their own dreams. Throughout China’s thousands of years of history, these “China dreams” have always existed. Do you have a “China dream”? I brought up this topic with several young Chinese students with higher U.S. educational backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, they all had their own heartfelt hopes and dreams for their native country.Fred Wang, an MBA candidate in the U.S. said, “I dream of equal chance for the young in China. Equal ity means all young people can____fairly, based on the rule-of-law no matter whether they are rich or poor.”Yujie Zhao, another MBA candidate in California said, “I dream of a happy family with an affordable home. I dream of having the best education for my children so they will not lose at the starting line, and I dream of being able to take good care of my parents after they retire(退休).” She said, “It seems like all my dreams are about family, but it is so true for most Chinese young dreamers today.”Yiqiong Zhang, an MB A graduate from the US shared her dreams. “I have a dream which I have been holding for many years, that is after working hard for about 20 to 25 years, I can have enough money to build and manage a small bookstore or a flower shop. Besides working hard, I am able to enjoy life: to play the piano, to hike and to enjoy atwo-month-long vacation every year. This may be a common dream among young Chinese students.”There is no doubt that all of these young students have their own “China dream”. They all love C hina, they all love chasing their dreams. Of course, there’s a lot of science behind movies like Interstellar or The Martian but not movies like Frozen or The Avengers, right? Think again.Animated(动画) movies use a lot of science and math to make things look as real as possible. For example, snow was used in many parts of the movie Frozen, but making the snow look real was a challenge. The snow needed to act differently in different situations, like if it was melting(融化) or blowing in the wind.Mathematicians(数学家)had to create a computer program to make the snow look more natural. Joseph Teran, a mathematician at the University of California, US, faced this challenge with Frozen, according to the Society for Science and the Public. He and his team used math equations(等式) to treat snow like many different pieces instead of one large thing, as movies had done in the past. They worked for months to make a computer program do this.Science is important for superhero movies too. Superheroes are supposed to have special powers that can’t always be explained. But moviemakers still want to make their actions realistic(现实的).For example, Raychelle Burks, a chemistry professor from the American Chemical Society, told the Daily Mail that some of the science behind The Avengers could be real. Iron Man’s suit is possible because it can be made of a light but strong material. In the movie , Tony Stark also makes new elements by making atoms collide(使原子对撞),much like scientists do in real life.So next time you see a movie, don’t forget to think ab out the science behind it.1.A lot of science and math are used in animated movies to _______.A.make them like Interstellar and The MartianB.make the audience think about scienceC.make things as realistic as possibleD.make snow smelt or blow in the wind2.The example of The Avengers in Paragraph 6 is used to show_______.A.how superheroes have super powersB.how science makes action realisticC.Iron Man’s suit is made of light materialsD.how Tony Stark makes new elements3.What can we learn from the passage?A.Every movie should be made to look as realistic as possible.B.Science and math play important roles in movie making.C.Animated movies use less science than other movies.D.Scientists can make things in movies become real.D16、Parking has been a problem for drivers for a long time in Zhengzhou. The Transportation Department is_____a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in Zhengzhou but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying tofind a place to park. The number of the private car owners is becoming lager and larger. In March, the city sent out 1,000 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. Industry experts say this suggests that local people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.By the year 2020, the number of cars in Zhengzhou will probably reach 200 thousand. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles. The center of Zhengzhou is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn’t solve the problem. The idea of “ Park & Ride” system has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and need higher parking fees(费用). What I am doing to create a life which is filled with honesty and integrity Honesty and integrity are precious characters, without which we cannot gain other people’s trust. Nevertheless, things can sometimes be so complex that we might go against honesty and integrity. Creating a life which is filled with honesty and integrity requires not only inner ties but also exterior measures.
First of all, it is of vital importance to know about the significance of honesty and integrity. Only in this way can people live with them. I keep it in mind that I should be an honest person, which helps me a lot to create a life with the two characters.
When it comes to what I am doing, the first thing coming into my mind is making promises. I never make a promise casually and I try my best to keep my promises, which adds panache to my image. What’s more, I am always a good listener and a secret keeper. Never do I leak others’secrets as a gossip girl. I am a reliable and trustworthy person in all my friends’ mind. I want to keep this image in the future, in my whole. Last but not least, I never cheated in the examination and will never do this in the future. The fairness of exam is more important under these circumstances where the scores are connected with scholarship, working opportunities and income. I never deceive myself because I want to be arranged according to my real ability.
I appreciate honesty and integrity. I will spare no efforts to create a
life which is filled with them. Will you join me?
Esther。
