If philosophy has a patron saint (领航者),it is Socrates.Shabby and a bit strange, Socrates did not fit in. Although physically ugly and often unwashed, he had great charm and a brilliant mind. Everyone in Athens agreed that there had never been anyone quite like him and probably wouldn't be again. He was unique. As a young man, he had been a brave soldier fighting in the Peloponnesian War against the Spartans and their allies. In middle age, he wandered around the marketplace, stopping people from time to time and asking them awkward questions. That was more or less all he did. But the questions he asked were razor-sharp.Over and over again Socrates demonstrated that the people he met in the marketplace didn't really know what they thought they knew. A military commander would begin a conversation totally confident that he knew what "courage" meant, but after 20 minutes in Socrates' company, he would leave completely confused. The experience must have been disconcerting. Socrates loved to reveal the limits of what people genuinely understood, and to question the assumptions on which they built their lives. The word "philosopher" comes f rom the Greek words meaning "love of wisdom”. The kind of wisdom that it values is based on argument, reasoning and asking questions, not on believing things simply because someone important has told you they are true. Wisdom for Socrates was not knowing lots of facts, but knowing how to do something. It meant understanding the true nature of our existence, including the limits of what we can know. Philosophers today are doing more or less what Socrates was doing: asking tough questions, looking at reasons and evidence, struggling to answer some of the most important questions we can ask ourselves about the nature of reality and how we should live.4. What can we learn about Socrates?A. He always dressed himself properly and neatly.B. He used to be an anti-war activist when young.C. He had a sharp mind and the spirit of insistence.D. He was enthusiastic about bargaining in the supermarket.5. What does the underlined word “ disconcerting " in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Awesome.B. Enjoyable.C. Disturbing.D. Risky.6. What is the wisdom from philosophy?A. Learning to argue, reason and ask.B. Having faith in what experts told you.C. Figuring out how to solve the question.D. Managing to have access to lots of facts.7. Which column is the passage taken from?A. Politics.B. Economy.C. Society.D. Culture.CIf you frequently Google language-related questions, you've probably seen an advertisement for Grammarly, an automated grammar-checker. Grammarly advertises its ability not only to fix a variety of mistakes like spelling and grammar, but to replace the poor words and expressions with proper ones and improve styles too. Does it achieve what it advertises? Sometimes. But sometimes Grammarly doesn't do what it should.Artificial-intelligence systems like Grammarly are trained with data. Developers also manually add certain rules to the patterns that Grammarly has taught itself. The software then looks at a user's article: if a string of words seems ungrammatical, it tries to spot how the mistake most closely resembles one from its training inputs. All this shows how far artificial intelligence is from the human kind. Computers have advantages over humans at problems that can be solved with pure maths, such as chess. Advances in language technology have been impressive in fields, such as speech recognition. But grammar is the real magic of language. And machines are no match for humans. Computers can have a good command of labelling things like nouns and verb phrases. But they struggle with grammatical sentences that are difficult to analyse precisely. To correct such articles requires knowing what the writer has intended. But computers don't work in meaning or intention; they work in formulae (公式). Humans, by contrast, can understand even rather complex grammar, because of the ability to guess the contents of other minds. Grammar-checking computers illustrate not how bad humans are with language, but just how good.8. According to the advertisement, Grammarly can help users.A. polish the compositionsB. collect materials of writingC. translate the essay into what you needD. master the rules of spelling and grammar9. In what way is artificial intelligence at a disadvantage?A. Playing chess.B. Speech recognition.C. Labelling nouns and verb phrases.D. Analysing grammatical sentences.10. What is the writer's attitude to grammar-checking computers?A. Praiseful.B. Unfavorable.C. Ambiguous.D. Uncaring.11. What's the main idea of the passage?A. Humans have advantages over artificial intelligence.B. A popular software to correct grammatical mistakes.C. Artificial intelligence has some problems with grammar.D. The advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence.DTaking an afternoon nap could keep your brain sharp, a new study has found. Adults ages 60 and older who took afternoon naps showed signs of better mental mind compared to those who didn't nap, according to a study published in General Psychiatry earlier this week.Researchers analyzed napping habits in 2, 214 Chinese people aged 60 and older and measured their cognitive abilities using several cognitive tests. Participants took the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, both of which test for memory, language and other cognitive abilities. In every category listed in the study, nappers scored statistically higher on average compared to those non-napping people. Researchers did not gather data from people under 60, so a correlation cannot be drawn between nappingand younger generations.Sleeping behaviors can be affected by a variety of factors, said Dr. David Neubauer, associate professor at Johns Hopkins University. Daily routines, medication use and sleep disorders can all play a role in how frequently someone takes a nap, he said.Neubauer recommended taking a shorter “power nap" of up to 20 minutes to decrease the chances of transitioning into slow-wave sleep, which makes people feel dizzy when they wake up. Napping can be a healthy part of an older adult's day, Neubauer acknowledged, but make sure sleepiness isn't due to a treatable nighttime sleep disorder. "Older individuals who want to do all they can to preserve their cognitive functioning should put nighttime sleep in the first place."12. What is the age range of the participants?A. Under 60.B. From 60 to 70.C. At 60.D. 60 and above.13. What has the participants tested in the research?A. Recognizing flavors.B. Language competence.C. Eating habits.D. Sight sensitivity.14. What kind of sleep will make people dizzy?A. Slow-wave sleep.B. Nighttime sleep.C. Power nap.D. Oversleeping.15. What is the best title of the passage?A. The Factors Affacting Sleeping BehaviorsB. It Is No Good for the Young to Take a NapC. A Research Aimed at Monitoring Sleeping Quality for the OldD. Instead, Visitors are invited to read on offer and pay whatever they want for books by dropping the money in a lock-box.Organizers say the Honesty Bookstore is a social experiment meant to raise awareness of honesty and integrity (正直) . Believe it or not, so far, people have been doing the right thing. With no staff around, there is absolutely nothing stopping people from just taking the books they like and leaving without paying anything for them. Well, that is nothing but their conscience. According to several news reports from china, people have actually been dropping money inside the box of their own free will, and Honesty Bookstore organizers claim that the raised money is enough to cover costs.Honestly bookshop, located on Xinjiekou street, Nanjing, managed to sell over 300 books on the opening day, with customers paying what organizers say was basically the right amount. A total of 800 books were sold over the weekend , and not a single one was stolen.News about the books tore’s functional payment model has been greatly welcomed in china, especially since similar experiments had less positive results in the past. Two years ago, we wrote about a small self-service restaurant in China’s Fujian Province, where patrons were invited to pay what they felt was the true price of the meal. Around 20% of them simply walked out without paying anything, and owners reported losses of 250,000 yuan in a very short time despite the place being packed every day.4. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?A. Nothing can stop people from taking the books they like.B. People put money inside the box based on the price of the books.C. The Honesty Bookstore isn’t at a loss.D. Honesty Bookstore organizers consider the experiment a failure.5. What’s the prospect of the Honesty Bookstore according to the passage?A. PositiveB. NegativeC. DoubtfulD. Worried6. what could be the best title for the text ?A. Honestly bookshop’s future.B. An experiment about people’s honesty.C. An unusual bookstoreD. The popularity of a bookstore.7. According to the passage, we can infer _______.A. Honesty Bookstore organizers aren’t satisfied with the result of the experiment.B. the bookstore’s functional payment style will be popula rC. people’s honesty and integrity completely withstand the testD. the small self-service restaurant in China’s Fujian Province is successfulCBirds ‘shout’ to be heard over the noise produced by human-made activities, new research has shown. The study led by Dr Caitlin Kight looked at how bluebirds changed their songs in response to increases in nearby background noise caused by human activities. In the research Dr Kight found that, as background noise increased, male bluebirds produced songs that were louder and lower-pitched. The results suggest that birds are able to perceive increases in noise and respond accordingly— not unlike humans do when in noisy settings.Dr Kight said that the research could help improve our understanding of environmental effects on animal communication, as well as raise our awareness of whatsorts of human modifications can impact animals, and how we might be able to reduce any negative effects of these disturbances.Dr Kight said: “Although much human—made noise is often different from that found in nature, there can be surprising similarities in certain features. Sounds caused by traffic, for example, may not be hugely different from those produced by waterfalls or heavy winds. Animals that evolved in habitats with those natural features may therefore already have the flexibility to respond to noise pollution. This certainly seems to be the case with bluebirds.”Although it has previously been shown that birds in noisier areas tend to sing differently than those in quieter surrounds, it was not immediately clear whether birds were able to make vocal adjustments in real time—that is, an immediate shift in response to increased noise made by a passing car, for example. Real-time adjustments have now been observed in five different bird species. The current study is the first to describe this behavior in a member of the thrush(画眉)family.8.Why did scientists carry out the study?A. To prove noise pollution is harmful to people.B. To show how sensitive birds are to loud noise.C. To explain why birds “shout” instead of singing.D. To find out how birds react to the increased noise.9. What does the underlined word “perceive” in Paragraph 3 mean?A. Switch.B. Realize.C. Admire.D. Reduce.10. How did bluebirds develop the ability to respond to noise pollution?A. By comparing different noise.B. By learning from other species.C. By living in habitats with natural noise.D. By facing man-made noise day by day.11. The significances of the research in the fourth paragraph are the following EXCEPT .A. to know bluebirds’ response to the increasing noiseB. to raise our awareness of what kinds of human activities can impact animalsC. to improve our understanding of environmental effects on animal communicationD. to get to know how to reduce any negative effects of these disturbancesDWhether in the home or the workplace, social robots are going to become a lot more common in the next few years. Social robots are about to bring technology to the everyday world in a more humanized way, said Cynthia Breazeal, chief scientist at the robot company Jibo. While household robots today do the normal housework, social robots will be much more like companions than mere tools. For example, these robots will be able to distinguish when someone is happy or sad. This allows them to respond more appropriately to the user. The Jibo robot, arranged to ship later this year, is designed to be a personalized assistant. You can talk to the robot, ask it questions, and make requests for it to perform different tasks. The robot doesn’t just deliver general answers to questions; it responds based on what it learns about each individual in the household. It can do things such as reminding an elderly family member to take medicine or taking family photos.Social robots are not just finding their way into the home. They have potential applications in everything from education to health care and are already finding their way into some of these spaces.Fellow Robots is one company bringing social robots to the market. The company’s “Oshbot” robot is built to assist customers in a store, which can help the customers find items and help guide them to the product’s location in the store. It can also speak different languages and make recommendations for different items based on what the customer is shopping for.The more interaction the robot has with humans, the more it learns. But Oshbot, like other social robots, is not intended to replace workers, but to work alongside other employ ees. “We have technologies to train social robots to do things not for us, but with us,” said Breazeal.12. Which is the typical character of social robots?A. They are more like human beings.B. They can control their emotions.C. They do the normal housework.D. They respond to users more slowly.13. According to Paragraph 3 we can know a Jibo robot can _______?A. communicate with you and perform operationsB. obey your orders and remind you to take pillsC. answer your questions and make requestsD. take your family pictures and deliver milk14. We can learn from the last paragraph that social robots will ______.A. train employeesB. take the place of workersC. improve technologiesD. be our workmates15. like Janja Garnbret,an Olympic gold medalist and eight-time world champion.Having risen to the top of the sport, the Slovenian now is using her platform to raise awareness of the“cultural trap”in climbing. She says it is contributing to a widespread issue with eating disorders. The problem is from an outdated idea that weighing less means you climb faster.Such a mindset has created an environment where young athletes start skipping or cutting down on meals, she says, sometimes to disastrous effect.Despite not having issues with eating disorders herself, she is more than aware of friends and fellow competitors who have damaged their bodies in the pursuit of a thinner figure.“I have to recognize that weight does have some role to play in the sport.I also want to win,but I’m a strong believer that you can do climbing,or any sport,in a healthy way.Luckily I didn’t fall into this trap.”She says.“I was trying hard to help them get out of it,but it didn’t work.It was really hard for me to see them destroying themselves, mentally and physically.”It was experiences such as this that inspired Garnbret to post a message on the social platform in July2023about eating disorders. The post sparked a huge response throughout the climbing community and attracted support from the likes of US rock climber Sasha DiGiulian. In her message,Garnbret spoke about Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport(REDs)—a syndrome(综合征) that occurs when someone of any gender has overtrained and/or undereaten for a long period in an attempt to improve their athletic performance, often without knowing the dangers of failing to compensate(补偿)for the energy they consume in training, racing and their daily lives.Left untreated, medical experts say3EDs can damage an athlete’s bone health, immune system, and psychological health,as well as his athletic performance.4.What does the“cultural trap”in the text refer to?A.The defeat of eating disorders.B.The pursuit of a thinner figure.C.The idea of keeping daily meals.D.The mindset of climbing to the top.5.Why did Garnbret decide to post the message on the social platform?A.She used to fall into the cultural trap.B Her efforts to help dieters were in vain.C.Her achievements deserved to be shared.D.She wanted to receive support from DiGiulian.6.What may lead to REDs according to the text?A.Severe mental problems.B.The habit of overeating.C.Over-exercise for a long time.D.The poor athletic performance.7.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.The Road to a World ChampionB.Rising to Fame on Social MediaC.The Challenge of Climbing with REDsD.Warning against Cultural Trap in ClimbingCFrying French fries in space may be possible, according to a recent study by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,Greece. On Earth,we have gravity and buoyancy(浮力).Gravity makes sure that the oil stays in the cooker, and buoyancy allows the bubbles that come out of the fries to travel upward so that the fries are cooked. In space, which is under microgravity, there is no buoyancy So scientists for long believed that frying wasn’t possible. The research team first designed a sealed container that could fry the potato safely in zero gravity and then took the researchers on a ride. The plane climbed up,and then,at a certain point, headed down just like a roller coaster. There were about20seconds of microgravity when the plane reached the highest point, during which the team did tests. To their surprise, the fries were cooked, and the bubbles were able to escape. When being fried, the water inside the potato turned into vapor(水蒸气).The vapor created pressure when released from the potato. The pressure inside the potato allowed the bubbles to go out and let the oil come in,according to the research paper. It showed that“frying can occur in space”.This isn’t the first attempt for scientists to deep-fry French fries in“space”.Early in2014,a group of researchers conducted studies under various gravities. The agency’s large centrifuge(离心机)can create artificial gravity from1to20g,with“g”referring to the gravitational acceleration at the surface of the Earth. It,has four arms and can spin fast.During the spin, things held by the arm are under centrifugal force, which is the source of artificial gravity. The fries were cooked under different gravities from1to9g.They discovered that the French fries had the most crispy(脆的)chips under3g.It’s interesting to mention that Jupiter’s gravity is2.4times that of Earth’s gravity. So,French fries may have the perfect taste if cooked on Jupiter, compared with other planets in the solar system.8.What may make frying French Fries possible in space?A.The release of bubbles.B.The transformation of gravity.C.The reduction of vapor.D.The accumulation of buoyance.9.Why did the plane head down like a roller coaster?A.To make a weightless sense.B.To get appropriate pressure.C.To test the seal of the container.D.To create experiment conditions.10.What is the purpose of mentioning the studies conducted in2014?A.To show the function of the centrifuge.B.To find common ground of various experiments.C.To prove the perfect taste of French fries on Jupiter.D.To offer more evidence about cooking French fries in space.11.Where is the text most probably taken from?A.A science magazine.B.A cook book.C.A food advertisement.D.A travel brochure.DFew social networking platforms are known for inspiring positive social change these days, but anInuit-developed app is helping local communities from Alaska to Greenland advance their set-determination.Named SIKU after the Inuktitut word for"sea ice",the app allows communities in the North to pull together traditional knowledge and scientific data to track changes m the environment, trace local wild foods, and make decisions about how to manage wildlife.Over the years,SIKU has stepped forward in its development.Recently, the elders saw that the platform could help address a familiar challenge:sharing knowledge with younger people who often have their noses in their phones.In2019,SIKU relaunched as a full-fledged social network—a platform where members can post photos and notes about wildlife sightings, hunts and sea ice conditions. The app operates in multiple languages, such as Inuktitut,Innu and Greenlandic.Since early2024,over25,000people from at least120communities have made more than75,000posts on SIKU.The app is also equipped with useful tools for life on the ice, including weather reports, sea ice forecasts, and other critical safety information.“When I go out on the land with family,we go a long distance, and the SIKU app can show which area we are in.It’s precise.”says Karen Nanook, who lives in Taloyoak,Nunavut. The data held in SIKU is abundant and up to date, and communities are already using the app to inform important decisions.In2021,for example, elders in Sanikiluaq were worried the local reindeer population had thinned,so the Hunters and Trappers Association used SIKU to survey hunters and look at recent reported harvest rates. The analysis led the association to temporarily close the hunt to relieve pressure on the population and to reintroduce hunting slowly once the number of reindeer increased. This decision shows how Inuit can use the technology in combination with traditional wildlife management.“It’s part science and part Inuit knowledge. It can work both ways, instead of one dominating the other,”says Arragutaina,a manager at the association.12.What do we know about SIKU?A.It traces data to do researches.B.It gets tryout all over the world.C.μallows people to post photos and notes.D It mainly focuses on traditional knowledge.13.What does the underlined word“full-fledged”in paragraph3mean?A.well-developed.B.Time-saving.C.Business-centered.D.Fancy-looking.14.What is Karen’s attitude towards SIKU?A.Favorable.B.Doubtful.C.Intolerant.D.Curious15.What is the text mainly about?A.SIKU advocates the Inuit tradition.B.SIKU promotes technological advances.C.SIKU tracks changes in the environment.D SIKU helps local communities make decisions.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The organization Ouachita Green put together this event, which allowed people from the Monroe area of Louisiana to bring in their recyclables, free of charge. Unfortunately, Louisiana is lacking in environmentally-friendly initiatives(倡议) so recycling is not offered to most people in our community. In contrast, it is required by law to recycle back in my home New Jersey. This truth astonished me, but more importantly, it encouraged me to seek change. I meant to make a difference. Through joint efforts, my classmates and I ended up starting the Green Club at the University of Louisiana. It focuses on creating a green attitude within the university and the greater Monroe area. While working on it, I met a group of ambitious high school students, who shared the same concern about the environment as us. While talking, we decided that working together would benefit not only the organizations at our schools, but also the community as a whole. Is we let the community know we are serious, there is an even better chance that we will succeed and influence others. If you are hesitant to volunteer or help out with an event in your community, my recommendation is to go ahead and do it. Even if it may be out of your comfort zone, it is important to put yourself out there. At the end of the day, you miss all of the shots you don’t take. 4.What surprised the author greatly? A.
