A leading researcher into old age has warned that the dream of living forever, or at least much longer than at present, could turn into a curse(祸根)rather than a blessing. It may become possible to lengthen the 41 human life by controlling genes---but what we gain may not be worth the price we would have to pay.

Professor John Grimley Evens believes that 42 , maximum life expectation is 115, but that with gene

43 it might be possible to extend this. The professor says, however, that a

44 lifestyle can extend the average lifespan of everyone at the moment.

―We know a lot already about how people’s lifestyles 45 their lifespan. There is increasing 46 to suggest that sensible lifestyles are effective in later life as well as in early and middle life.‖―It is never too late to gain some 47 from giving up smoking, from drinking less alcohol, from taking up sensible patterns of diet and exercise and from controlling body weight. We already know how to 48 human life.‖

The professor believes that the process of lengthening life by means of gene therapy might bring dangers with it. If gene therapy affected only one part of the human body but not all of it, people might be 49 capable of living longer, but would start to be worse mentally at a much earlier age.

With oil prices approaching the symbolic mark of $ 100 a barrel, the world is heading towards its third energy shock in a generation. But today's rise is 50 different from the oil crises in the 1970s and 1980s. It will have a greater global impact.

The 51 oil shocks were caused by sudden interruptions in exports from the Middle East. But this time prices have been rising steadily as 52 gasoline in both developed countries and developing economies grows. This is the world’s first demand-led energy shock.

Oil prices 53 $ 98.6 on the New York Mercantile Exchange before falling back to $ 96.4 at the close of trading last Wednesday. Forecasts of future oil prices 54 widely. Virtually no one foresees a return to the $20 oil of a decade ago. It means consumers should face an era of high fuel 55 .

For most of the 20th century, 56 was cheap and abundant. Throughout the 1990s,

57 ,oil prices averaged $20 a barrel. Even at today’s highs, luckily, for the Americans, oil is

58 than imported bottle water.

The concern today is over how the 59 sector(行业)will meet the growth in demand over the longer term.

China faces the 60 . Rapid industrialization has come at a price: Oil demand has increased more than three times since 1980. It turned a country that was once self-sufficient into an oil 61 .

Today, however, China consumes only a third as much oil as the US, which burns a quarter of the 62 oil each day. Europe has managed to reduce oil consumption through high gasoline taxes, small cars and 63 public transportation. But Americans have not.

Experts say no one should count on oil prices rising forever. Economic 64 in the world’s major economies will probably send prices down.

Ever since they were first put on the market in the early 1990s, genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods have been increasingly developed and marketed in many countries in the word, mainly on the basis of their promise to end the worldwide food __41__. But can GM technology solve world hunger problems? Even if it would, is it the best solution?

Despite what it promises, GM technology actually has not increased the production potential of any crop. In fact, studies show that the most widely grown GM crop, GM soybeans, has suffered __42__ productivity. For instance, a report that analyzed nearly two decades of research on major GM food crops shows that GM engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop production.

Something else, however, has been on the rise. While GM seeds are __43__, GM companies tell farmers that they will make good profits by saving money on pesticides (杀虫剂). On the contrary, US government data show that GM crops in the US have produced an overall increase in pesticide use __44__ to traditional crops. ―The promise was that you could use less chemicals and __45__ production. But nei ther is true,‖ said Bill Christison, President of the US National Farm Coalition.

At the same time, the authors of the book World Hunger: Twelve Myths argue that there actually is more than enough food in the world and that the hunger crisis is not caused by production, but by problems in food distribution and __46__. These indeed __47__ our efforts and money. Meanwhile, the rise in food prices results from the increased use of crops for fuel rather than food, according to a World Bank report.

As a matter of fact, scientists see better ways to __48__ the world. Another World Bank report concluded that GM crops have little to offer to the challenges of worldwide poverty and hunger, because better ways out are __49 __, among which ―green‖ f arming is supposed to be the first choice.

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighboring countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I __50__ and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the __51__. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for __52__. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ co mplete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except__53__ . The first no-win situation is quarrels over __55__ things. Examples include the color of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the __56__ style of clothing, the child’s __57__ to eat a good breakfast before school, or his __58__ to sleep until noon on the weekends. A year ago, at the annual pre-Grammy party, Whitney Houston, the great diva(女歌手), walked on stage and closed the evening with a brilliant performance.

Last Saturday, Houston was once again the 41 of the showcase before the Grammys, but her presence was a posthumous(死后的)one.

Earlier that day, pop music’s former queen was found dead in her hotel room. She was 48.

This, no doubt, is sad news to the whole music industry and her fans all over the world, __42__ what a legendary life and remarkable career that she once had.

At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music world. From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the w orld’s43 artists. She strongly impressed the audiences with effortless, powerful and peerless vocals.

Besides multi-million record sales, Houston made countless hits such as The Greatest Love of All, I Have Nothing, and the mostly famous I Will Always Love You.

She also 44 a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey.

But by the end of her career, it was a 45 fall for this superstar.Houston has been addicted to drugs. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming. Her once calm and peaceful image was shattered by a wild

manner and unusual public appearances, and her once natural voice became rough and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she 46 .

―The biggest devil is me.I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,‖ Houston told the ABC in an interview in 2002.

In 2009, Houston staged what seemed to be a successful 47 with the album I Look To You, which debuted on top of the charts.

But hoarse voice, 48 concerts, and continuous illness–Houston’s comeback trail wasn’t smooth at all.In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, Houston confessed: ―It (show business)is too much.So much to try to live up to, to try to be, and I wanted out.‖

Now that Houston has finally taken a break from all the chaos, may she rest 49 .

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, to serve some sort of 50 , teach you a lesson, or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become. You 51 know who these people maybe (possibly your roommate, neighbor, co-worker, long lost friend, lover, or even a complete stranger), but when you lock eyes with them, you know at that very moment they will affect your life in some 52 way.

A recent study shows that more years of school could help students get higher scores on intelligence tests. That was the finding of a study of teenage males in Norway. Now, other research shows that ___41___ activity may help students do better in their classes.

The research comes as educators in some countries are reducing time for activities like physical education. They are using the time ___42___ for academic subjects like math and reading.

Researchers at VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam reviewed the results of fourteen studies, which included more than fifty-five thousand children, aged six to eighteen.

Researcher Amika Singh says the studies showed a link between physical activity and scores on subjects such as math, English and reading. ―Based on the results of our study we can conclud e that being physically active is ___43___ for academic performance.‖

Ms. Singh offers some possible explanations. ―There are, first, physiological explanations, like more blood ___44___, and so more oxygen to the brain. (英语)高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案

(英语)高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 The setting was a packed gymnasium just before the start of a game against another school. There were five girls who were members of the Danville High School basketball team—all of them starters. They were not in uniform to play that night and would not be on the team for the rest of this season. They were there to admit their breaking of team rules. They were there to support their coach's decision to take them off the team. They were there to let the town know there was a problem in their little community that needed to be addressed. And they did it with sincere regret rather than defensiveness. While the school had been out for the New Year's holiday, the five girls had gone to the party with several of their friends. There was alcohol there. And they all drank some. Coach Rainville has a zero tolerance rule on drugs and alcohol for her members though it was a hard decision to make. When classes resumed and accounts of holiday parties were shared, rumors about the five girls began closing in on them. The coach said she couldn't back down on her rules. And the players—two junior students and three senior students—agreed. That night in the gym was part of their public support of the coach's decision. “We hope you will understand that we are not bad kids. What we did was definitely not worth it. We hope this event will make everyone realize that there is a big drug and alcohol problem in our community,” one of the senior students said, “And if you work with us to try to solve this problem, you will help us feel that we have not been thrown off our basketball team for nothing.” The five left the floor to deafening applause. The team may not win another game this year. But they've learnt something about personal responsibility, the effect of one's action on others, and honesty that will serve them well throughout life. (1)It can be inferred from the passage that the five girls who were kicked off the team were ________. A. very good players on the team B. addicted to alcohol and drugs C. three junior students and two senior students D. scolded by their parents for drinking alcohol (2)What did the girls do to support their coach's decision? A. They didn't fight for Danville High School any more. B. They all gave speeches to apologize in the local press. C. They admitted their mistake in public in the gymnasium. D. They would never drink any alcohol throughout their life. (3)Which word best describes the coach Rainville? A. Indifferent. B. Strict. C. Stubborn. D. Cruel. (4)Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Growing up with pain B. A bad mistake C. Team rules are everything D. Basketball girls in high school 【答案】(1)A
