No surprise, her diet and food rule made her “unhealthy, unhappy, and angry.”Less than three years of deciding to eat more and switching up her exercise routine, the UK resident shared a few transformation photos and explained how her decision to stop restricting her food intake and overdoing it at the gym has now made her “happy and healthy.”In a photo, Black describes her diet at the time: yogurt for breakfast; a protein shake, chicken breast and vegetables for lunch and extra vegetables if she got hungry later. She gave up sugar, alcohol and cheat meals, and her workouts were incredibly exhaustive.“I would make sure I burned more than I ate,” she said, writing that she wouldn’t get off the treadmill (跑步机) until she torched at least a thousand calories. As a result, she was “unhappy, unhealthy, faint, food deprived, angry, and in bad relationships,” Black wrote. In another picture, she describes “My daily diet consisted of plain yoghurt for breakfast, a protein shake, a chicken breast and vegetables for lunch, then if I was hungry I’d have another bag of vegetables. I wouldn’t eat fruit as it had too much sugar, wouldn’t drink alcohol and wouldn’t have any sort of cheat meal.”Now, her improved meal plan consists of oats with banana and protein; a post-workout shake, chicken, rice and vegetables; and fish, sweet potatoes and vegetables. She also snacks on almonds, rice cakes, protein bars, and other whole, satisfying foods. While she still does some cardio (有氧运动), she’s involved in weight lifting, among other workouts. “Outcome: healthy, happy and strong,” she wrote. Most body transformations shared on social media focus on losing weight. Black’s post shows how finding the rightbalance for your body so you feel great is a positive body transformation too.4.What can we learn about Courtney Black from the first paragraph?A.She used to be pretty. B.She mainly fed on vegetables.C.She died while doing tiring workout. D.She would feel sick of her appearance.5.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “torched” in Paragraph 4?A.burnt B.wasted C.ate D.decreased6.What has happened to Courtney Black?A.She eats more meat and sugar. B.She enjoys her balanced lifestyle.C.She becomes more strong-willed. D.She eats more and takes less exercise.7.The writer’s attitude toward Courtney Black’s decision would be best described as _______.A.neutral B.cautious C.favorable D.objectiveCInvestigators at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research discovered dozens of new genetic variations(基因变异)associated with a person’s general cognitive ability(认知能力). The findings, which were published online today in Cell Reports, have the potential to help researchers develop more targeted treatment for cognitive and memory disorders.“For the first time, we were able to use genetic information to point us towards specific drugs that might aid in cognitive disorders of the brain, including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(注意缺陷障碍),” said Todd Lencz, PhD, senior author of the study and professor at the Feinstein Institute and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell. In the largest peer-reviewed study of its kind, an international team of 65 scientists, led by Dr. Lencz, studied the genomes of more than 100,000 individuals who had their brain function measured by neuropsychological(神经心理的)tests. These data were then combined with genomes from 300,000 people measured for the highest level of education achieved, which serves as an estimate for cognitive ability, or how the brain acquires knowledge. While analyzing cognitive ability, researchers also discovered a genetic overlap(基因重叠) with longevity(长寿). They found when examining an individual’s family that a genetic tendency towards higher cognitive ability was associated with longer lifespan. A new genetic overlap between cognitive ability and risk for autoimmune(自身免疫的)disease was also identified. This study appears less than a year after Dr. Lencz and his colleagues published a similar, smaller study that was only able to identify a few key genes associated with cognitive ability.“The field of genomics is growing fast,” Dr. Lencz said. “The number of genes we can discover is a direct function of the sample size available, and thus further research with additional samples is likely to provide even more insight into how our genes play a role in cognitive ability.”8.What information about the investigators can we get from the first paragraph?A.They published their findings in a newspaper.B.They devoted themselves to improving cognitive ability.C.They found a lot of genetic variations about some disorders.D.Their findings are likely to help find more treatment for some diseases.9.What can be inferred from what Todd Lencz said?A.They could cure cognitive disorders of the brain for the first time.B.It’s their first time to make use of genetic variation s.C.Our genes play an important role in cognitive ability.D.Researchers are making rapid progress in genomics.10.What can we know about their study?A.It could only identify a few key genes. B.It was conducted by scientists worldwide.C.Their study is second to none in its field. D.It was meant to help man live a longer life. 11.Why will the scientists probably do further research?A.Because more genes must be discovered.B.Because the field of genomics is growing fast.C.Because more samples are needed to find more genes.D.Because they wonder why our genes play a role in cognitive ability.DThe older I get the worse I look. My hair has started graying and things have started hanging down loosely. I’d never really been self-conscious about the effects of aging but over time I noticed a difference; not in me, but in my customers. While some of my customers appear to be ageless, others appear considerably older than they are simply due to the lack of care they give their appearance before they go out in public. Looking back on some of my older photos, I realized worriedly that I was just as bad and determined to find a way to improve myself. But how? I’m not exactly a beauty expert and I didn’t want to spend a fortune either. I continued watc hing my customers as I searched for answers.I quickly realized that regardless of social class, females at my age can make a variety of simple wardrobe choices. Even an old, faded T-shirt can look nice when presented in a certain way.I had cosmetics alre ady but I hadn’t purchased jewelry for myself in years! I stopped wearing dangly(悬摆得)things when my kids were babies since they liked to pull them, then passed my collection along to friends so the items wouldn’t go to waste.Bravely, I started wearing cosmetics when I went out as I began searching for some budget-friendly jewelry. I wanted something cheap, timeless, and a bit dangly since I wear my hair up frequently. I eventually wandered across some jewelry that had been placed on clearance.I’ve now clipped(修剪)my nose hair, pulled my isolated eyebrows, wore a bit of cosmetics, and added a bit of jewelry to my everyday jeans and T-shirts. Now, to my delighted surprise, I actually receive the occasional compliment as opposed to the indifference I’m accustomed to receiving so my self-confidence has received a boost as well. Not a bad reward for the cost of a dollar and a little time!12.What can be inferred about the writer from the first two paragraphs?A.She didn’t really know about the effects of aging until her customers reminded her.B.Her customers’ behaviors caused her to care about her own appearance.C.She realized she looked younger than her customers.D.She should have been better aware of she is too old.13.Which of the following will the writer probably do?A.Spending a lot of money on clothes and cosmetics. B.Spending much time dressing up.C.Buying some jewelry on sale. D.Behaving like a young lady.14.What has the writer been doing to improve herself in her life?①Learning to be a beauty expert.②Wearing some dangly.③Clipping her nose hair.④Wearing a little makeup.⑤Wearing some jewelry.A.①②③⑤B.①②③④C.②③④⑤D.③④⑤15.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.It Doesn’t Cost a Fortune to Look Nice B.Never Too Old to Have PassionateC.The Older, the More Charming D.Caring for Yourselves, Ladies第二节(共5小题;每小题3分, 满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分60分)第一节(共15小题;每小题3分,满分45分)AWe’re all familiar with the “hop on hop off” buses that tour around big cities. It seems there’s now a new option coming that’s bigger and better than those that have gone before. Next year, expedition company Adventures Overland is set to launch a new “hop on hop off” bus service that will travel 20,000km from India to England. The vehicle, which will have space for 20 people, is set to cross 18 countries in 70 days and passengers will be able to stop off in cities along the way.People looking to book the trip will be able to choose if they want to take the entire journey, or one of the four legs (Southeast Asia, China, Central Asia, Europe). If you take the route that begins in Delhi, the bus will travel to Thailand, before going up to China, then onto Russia and European cities such as Warsaw, Prague and Brussels — before finishing in London.Adventure Overland’s bus route was partly inspired by the Hippie Trail buses that crossed the world in the 50s and 60s. Despite being the “longest bus journey in the world”, guests are bound to be comfortable with features such as business class seats, Wi-Fi, in-seat phone charging points, private lockers and individual entertainment systems with AUX and USB ports. Anyone looking to book the great voyage must be willing to part with a considerable amount of money. Tickets for the journey are priced at £15,300 and the first departure is currently set for May 2021. “The best time to do this journey is between April and June, because that’s when the weather is favorable to start the journey from India through to Myanmar, and to cross the high mountains of China and Kyrgyzstan,” Adventures Overland co-founder Tushar Agarwal told CNN. “There are a lot of people, travelers, who want to experience these overland journeys, but they don’t want to drive.”1.Where can be the destination of the bus service?A.China. B.Thailand. C.England. D.Russia. 2.Which of the following is Not the feature of the “hop on hop off” buses?A.Comfortable seats. B.Private lockers.C.Accessible Internet. D.Computer games. 3.When is the best time to take the journey?A.January. B.May. C.July. D.October.BWe never knew why my father took over storytelling for his three little girls, but we always suspected it was to save us from Sleeping Beauty. Walt Disney’s masterwork hit the big suburban screens in 1959 with a message for girls as vivid as its widescreen Technirama: If you’re pretty enough, a prince will rescue you.My father invented a series of bedtime stories featuring three princesses who happened to be just our ages and even looked like us. For some reason, the grownups were never around when danger struck. So, night after night, it was up to the three sisters to save the village, which they always managed to do just about the time that one of us fell asleep. It did occur to us that this village was either highly unfortunate or its adults incredibly clumsy that somuch fell to these little girls. We also saw that our parents wanted us to be strong. These girls didn’t need tobe rescued. They were alert, wise, and bold. That was enough. But how to carry this storyline into life was not obvious. In my early experience, women were justbeginning to be admitted to what had been men-only colleges, and teaching jobs followed. I loved to tell mynetwork about the welcome dinner for new graduate students in vast, candlelit Gothic hall. I sat next to thedean of the graduate school, whose first words to me were: “I don’t know why the graduate school is nowadmitting women. You’ll all just get married, have babies, and your education will be wasted.” After a fewdays to recover, I began telling friends this story and found their laughter and support encouraging. Soon, Ihad accumulated many such stories. Then, one of them hit hard. A colleague I trusted urged me, seriously, to quit teaching, because “If youdon’t leave political science, you will lose everything feminine about you.” I laughed. While losing someoneelse’s idea of femininity might have seemed a great loss, losing weakness surely was not! The power of thatpromise supported me. I taught political science for seven more years with a great sense of appreciation forthe opportunity, until taking up journalism, which I loved more.Still waiting for a prince? Be one.4.Why did father invent bedtime stories for his three little girls?A.To help them fall asleep. B.To make their life colorful.C.To encourage them to be strong. D.To make them interested in stories.5.What’s the dean’s attitude toward women?A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Prejudiced. D.Ambiguous.6.Which of the following might the author most agree with?第1页共8页第2页共8页A.Women can work better than men.B.At no time should women be labeled as weak.C.It is a waste of time for women to go to college.D.Women should give up everything to be feminine.7.Which saying can best describe this passage?A.Great minds think alike.B.Judge not a book by its cover.C.Failure is the mother of success.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.CWith reports suggesting a second wave of coronavirus (新冠病毒) may be on its way (or here already), it makes sense to give yourselves a check if we’re still doing all the right things. Washing hands is one of those things that we were hopefully already doing, but realized in the wake of the pandemic that we could always be doing it more and for longer. But what about washing our food? Given the news that there have been outbreaks in food factories and processing plants—from Bernard Matthews to Mr. Kipling locations—it does make sense to think about it.Although the government have confirmed that the chance of catching coronavirus from food and food packa ging is “very unlikely”, washing food before eating is a part of good habit that can reduce that small risk. Sally Bloomfield, chair of the scientific advisory board of the International Scientific Forum on Home Hygiene tells people, “Because the items you pick off the shelves in the supermarket will have been touched by other people, there is a chance that the packaging may have become harmful via their hands. Washing your shopping is not a question of whether it is necessary, it’s about minimizing risk—and if someone in the home is at increased risk of infection, this becomes more important.”Dr. Perpetua Emeagi, a lecturer in Human Biology and Biological Sciences at Liverpool Hope Universi ty, says, “If someone with COVID-19 asked you if you wanted a bite of their sandwich, you clearly wouldn’t go anywhere near it.” And the same caution has to be taken with everything you bring home from the supermarket, as you simply don’t know who’s been handling it before you. Imagine a scene where someone with COVID-19 has sneezed into their hands before entering the store and picking up a tin of beans. The same person changes his mind, puts the tin of beans back on the shelf, only for you to come and place it in your basket shortly afterwards. On the science side, she continues, “Officially, Public Health England tells us that the amount of infectious virus on any surface is likely to have decreased significantly by 24 hours, and even more so by 48 hours. But there’s also some evidence to suggest the virus could survive for up to seven days outside the human body. Surfaces like cardboard and plastic—common supermarket packaging products—are known to effectively harbor COVID-19. And my advice would be this: wash or wipe down everything you bring home thoroughly before either putting in your cupboards or consuming it.”8.Why did the author mention coronavirus in the first paragraph?A.To lead to the topic. B.To attract young readers.C.To give some evidence. D.To relate the latest event.9.Which of the following is TRUE according to paragraph 2?A.People can by no means catch a virus from food.B.Washing food before eating is a positive and necessary action.C.The items you pick from the supermarket can have a lot of viruses.D.The government has confirmed that there is no need to wash food before eating.10.What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 3?A.Cause. B.Destroy. C.Carry. D.Protect. 11.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?A.Is it necessary to wash food before eating?B.How can we stop the spread of coronavirus?C.What are the best ways to pick up groceries?D.What should we do if we were infected with coronavirus?DScientists believe that birds in North America are shrinking because of rising temperatures associated with climate change. A study published in the peer-reviewed Ecology Letters found not only that birds’ bodies are shrinking, but also that their legs are getting shorter and wings are getting longer.David Willard, study co-author, measured 70,716 North American migratory birds of 52 different species from 1978 to 2016. For nearly 40 years, scientists and researchers woke up at about 3: 30 a.m. to collect and measure birds that crashed into the museum’s windows during the spring or fall migration period, according to the Field Museum. “It started as a very casual study—someone mentioned that birds sometimes run into McCormick Place, and I was curious, so I went for a walk around the building one morning,” Willard said in the museum’s press release. “I found some dead birds and I brought them back to the museum.”Willard discovered that over time the birds’ mass decreased by about 2.6% and leg length decrease d by about 2.4%. He also found that their wing length increased by about 1.3%. Scientists also measured temperature, precipitation, vegetation and other factors. They found that warmer temperatures were associated with a smaller body size.Co-author Benjamin Winger, who also studies the evolution and ecology of birds at University of Michigan, told The Washington Post that warmer temperatures have had an “almost universal effect” on shrinking other animals. The findings were consistent with a 2017 study that researched the breeding of wild zebra finches across a range of temperatures. Scientists found that a hotter climate during breeding periods produced smaller birds.Authors of the most recent study, however, also noted that other complications of climate change, such as food limitation and environmental pollution, could have something to do with body size reduction. 12.What happened to the birds in North America?A.They lack food. B.They suffer from drought.C.Their body sizes decrease. D.They die of climate change.13.Why did Willard walk around McCormick Place?A.To see how the birds migrate. B.To find out the reason of the birds’ death.C.To make causal observations. D.To check if there are dead birds.14.What do we know about a zebra finch according to the passage?A.It’s a bird affected by warm temperature.B.It’s a kind of zebra that lives in the wild.C.It’s a bird whose wing length has increased by 1.3%.D.It’s a kind of zebra of a small size.15.Which of the following has no connection with birds’ shrinking?A.Food limitation. B.Temperature.C.Vegetation. D.Environmental pollution.第二节(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

That meeting turned out to be my exit interview. I was 64 years old at the time. It wasn’t completely unexpected. I signed a pile of papers and left the company. So, 40 plus years of employment was over. I had a good reputation and background. Retirement was not a choice for me. I wanted to do something. And then an idea came into my mind, born from my concern for our environment. I wanted to build my own business, designing and manufacturing biodegradable(可生物降解的)packaging from waste. This is called clean technology, and it was really meaningful to me. It could help reduce billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging wasted each year.Five years later, I’m enraptured and proud to share with you that our income has doubled every year and we have no debt. Meanwhile, I have a wonderful partner, and we’ve won more than 20 awards for the work that we’ve done. And I am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. But what I really long for is to find other first-time entrepreneurs(企业家)who are my age. I want to connect with them.So I want to do something about that in a few years. I want us to start talking more about people who don’t become entrepreneurs until they are seniors. And then connecting all of them across industries, regions and countries—building a community.4.What happened to the author nine years ago?A.He was fired from his job. At that moment, I had the idea for an app that we could only use when we had low battery. But I didn’t know how it would work until we came up with the idea of making it a public chatroom.”The app was shown by developers David Surprenant from Canada and Dries Depoorter from Belgium at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.According to Depoorter, the app has so far recorded over half a million messages in conversations worldwide, with an average of eight people in the chatroom at any given time. Both place the fork on the left and the knife on the right in formal table settings. However, more so than Americans, Germans are noted for the carefulness with which they approach etiquette. For example, each flower has a specific meaning in Germany. When visiting Germany, it is wise to be aware of the characteristics of German etiquette. In Germany it is good etiquette to shake an individual’s hand when you first meet him or her. Also, handshakes are important when they conduct business and when they come or go from a meeting. For informal greetings among friends, Germans will lightly kiss one another on both cheeks or the air next to the cheeks. Always refer to someone with a title before their name in a social setting. “Frau” is Ms. And “Herr” is Mr. They should be put in front of the name of the individual to whom you are referring. If you are invited to visit someone in Germany, it is important to bring a small gift such as wine or candy. If you take a wine, be sure to pick an imported one, as bringing a German wine might send a message to the host that he or she does not have a good taste in wine. If you decide to take flowers, yellow roses, which convey joy and friendship, are a good choice. Red roses indicate romance and carnations (康乃馨)symbolize mourning. Do not sit down in someone’s house without being invited to sit first.Germans are organized, appreciating structures in their daily lives. They plan out their day, and it is bad manners to interrupt schedules. They are also very particular about maintaining orderly homes. They place a high priority on cleanliness and take great pains to keep everything in order.12.Why does the author mention the fact that each flower has a different meaning to Germany?A.To show Germans are particular about etiquette.B.To remind us to choose flowers carefully in Germany.C.To explain the important role flowers play in Germany.D.To explain the common etiquette in Germany and America.13.In Germany, kissing each other is usually accepted among _____ ______.trangers B.business partners C.friends D.family members14.What is considered improper when you are invited to a German’s home?A.Taking yellow roses. However, his dedication to family life maybe what wins over many. After getting married to US model Chrissy Teigen in 2013, Legend is the father of one son and one daughter. When he performed it at the 2014 Grammy Awards, many were touched by his delicate voice and the deep love beneath. “The more you know someone, the more you’re inspired by your relationship,” Legend told LA Confidential Magazine. “You have to grow enough to be able to write that song with sincerity and authenticity.”Despite his onstage confidence, Legend had to work to become a legend. As a teenager, he was the smallest kid in class. “I was always less mature, less at ease socially. I had plenty of awkward times,” he told People. “Most of your teenage years, into your twenties, you’re still figuring out who you are, how you present yourself to the world ... Do they always tell the truth? Do they always keep their promises? In the near future, voluntary blood donations might be used as a clue to prove someone’s trustworthiness. On Nov 19, the National Health Commission (NHC) and other departments jointly released a document urging the social credit system to include voluntary blood donations. An incentive mechanism(激励机制)is also recommended, to provide donors with more conveniences and rewards like preferential treatment in using public facilities or visiting government-run parks, China Daily reported. “We need to show we care about donors so they feel honored,” Liu Jiang, director of Beijing’s blood donation office, told CCTV.Indeed, donating blood is key to saving many lives. Due to blood’s very limited shelf life, regular blood donations are needed from a sufficient number of healthy people. This ensures that safe blood will be available whenever and wherever it is needed, according to the World Health Organization. However, the notice received mixed reviews on social media, with some people questioning whether it was necessary to include voluntary blood donation in the social credit system, according to the South China Morning Post. The system records things like a person’s career information, and payments for credit cards or other debt expenses are used to tell whether a person or company is trustworthy. People who cannot pay debts on time would have a worse credit score, resulting in more difficulties borrowing money from banks, reported the P eople’s Daily. Many Sina Weibo users believe that blood donations should be voluntary. They say it has little to do with social credit. Others doubt whether it is appropriate to reward this action because some people would donate blood for reasons other than helping save people’s lives. Guangming Daily commented that only acts closely linked to personal credit should be included in the social credit system. A voluntary blood donor might refuse to pay his or her debts, while someone who doesn’t donate blood might have a perfect credit record, it noted.8.What benefit can voluntary blood donors get according to the 2nd paragraph?A.Free park tour. This test is called the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), run by the organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Taking around three hours on computers, it mainly focuses on 15-year-olds’ reading, math and science abilities. Earlier this month, the latest test results were published.Students from Beijing and Shanghai, as well as Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, outperformed students from the other 78 participating education systems in mathematics and science by a wide margin. In reading comprehension scores, only Singapore came close. Chinese mainland students first took the tests in 2009, with Shanghai topping the scores. The city claimed the top spot again in 2012.The PISA rankings aroused global interest in Chinese teaching methods and as a result, Britain increased exchanges with Chinese schools to improve its math education. Nearly 600 teachers from Britain and China, mainly from primary schools, have taken part in the exchange since 2014, and around 5,000 of Britain’s 16,000 primary schools have adopted the Shanghai math teaching method. In the latest PISA test, Chinese mainland students averaged 591 points in math —more than 100 points higher than the OECD average. British students averaged 502, jumping from 27th place three years ago to 18th in the math rankings.Philip Avery, director of education for the Bohunt Education Trust, UK, said, “We’ve benefited fromworking with Chinese partners for the high quality of lesson planning and teaching for memorization in China. Our Chinese partners have benefited from our approach to the development of character, focus on innovation and application of knowledge.”However, Zhang Xuanmin, who is in charge of the PISA project in Shanghai, points out that besides basic education, Chinese students still need to improve their social and emotional competencies.12.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.UK teenagers are poorly-educated.B.UK schools’ teaching methods are out of fashion.C.Teenagers in Shanghai got higher scores in PISA.D.Teenagers in Shanghai are the best students in the world.13.What does the underlined word mean in the 2nd paragraph?14.What’s probably the average math point of OECD in the latest PISA test?15.What can be indicated by Philip Avery’s words?A.The exchange program is a win-win situation.B.Chinese students still have a long way to go in education.C.UK schools get more benefits from the exchange program.D.UK teenagers have gained a lot of improvement in math learning.

AAs a nation, we are getting bigger and eating more. But there are effective ways to control your appetite and eat only as much as you need.Keep away from low-nutrition snacksThat means ice cream, sweets, chips biscuits, cakes and any other salty orsugary snacks you eat between meals. Although we have a tendency to eat them, you can learn to live without these unhealthy-and-fattening-additions to your diet. Try to make it a habit to eat them only when offered at social events or as a special treat.Leave half an hour between main course and dessertHaving a break between courses gives your brain time to receive the fullness signal and make you more likely to refuse the sweet stuff. And, in fact, as soon as you feel the first signals of fullness, remove your plate from the table. That will tell your brain that food time is over.Make yours a small helpingPut an end to super-sized portions. You won’t be missing out—today’s small was the medium or large of a few decade ago. Select or serve yourself a modest portion and eat it slowly enjoying the flavors. Before you know it, small will feel just right. What’s more, ordering the smaller size leads to wearing the smaller size.Distract yourselfWhen you find yourself hunting down food, even though you’re even hungry, do something else for 20 minutes. Drink a large glass of water as thirst is often confused with a desire for food. Choose something that engages your brain as well as your hands, such as writing a letter or listening to a song. You could also go for a short walk or do something that you enjoy. If you think you really are hungry, set an alarm for 20 minutes’ time and if you still want to eat when it rings, fine. If not, the urge will have passed.1. Which way suits you better if you tend to order a large portion of food?A. Distract yourself.B. Make yours a small helping.C. Keep away from low-nutrition snacks.D. Leave half an hour between main course and dessert.2. Why should you have a break between main course and dessert?A. To give people time to chat.B. To have a good appetite for sweet stuff.C. To reduce appetite for dessert.D. To give the host time to remove your plate.3. When you find yourself pursuing for food, what should you do?A. Eat some biscuits.B. Eat some sugary snacks.C. Have some soft drinks.D. Listen to a lovely melody.BOne billion people in the world are short of water. How can this problem be solved. Some suggestions have been to desalinate ocean water or to build enormous water pipelines from areas where water is abundant. (Suggestions such as these prove extremely expensive when they are actually used.) One possibility that scientists are considering is pulling icebergs from either the North Pole or the South Pole to parts of the world with a water shortage. Although many questions must be answered before such a project could be tried, moving icebergs seems a reasonable possibility in the future.Engineers, mathematicians, and glaciologists from a dozen countries have been considering the iceberg as a future source of water. Saudi Arabia is particularly interested in this project because it has a great water shortage. Scientists estimate that it would take 128 days to transport a large iceberg (about 1/2 square mile) to Saudi Arabia. Yet the iceberg would be completely melted by the 104th day. Therefore, insulation would be essential, but how to insulate the iceberg remains an unsolved problem. The problems in transporting an iceberg are numerous. The first problem is choosing the iceberg to pull. The icebergs that form in the North Pole are quite difficult to handle because of their shape. Only a small portion extends above the water — most of the iceberg is below the surface, which would make it difficult to pull. South Pole icebergs, on the other hand, are flat and float like table tops. Thus they would be much easier to move. How can a 200-million-ton iceberg be moved. No ship is strong enough to pull such enormous weight through the water. Perhaps several ships could be used. Attaching ropes to an iceberg this size is also an enormous problem. Engineers think that large nails or long metal rods could be driven into the ice. What would happen if the iceberg splits into several pieces during the pulling. Even if an iceberg with very few cracks were chosen, howcould it be pulled through stormy waters. Furthermore, once the iceberg reached its destination, very few ports would be deep enough to store it.All of these problems must be solved before icebergs can become a reasonable source of water. Yet scientists estimate that it will be possible to transport them in the near future. Each year, enough icebergs form to supply the whole world with fresh water for a full year. In addition, icebergs are free and nonpolluting. As a solution to the world’s water problems, icebergs may be a workable possibility.4. What is a problem in transporting iceberg?A. The size of the iceberg.B. The colour of the iceberg.C. The salt in the iceberg.D. The movement of air and water.5. What is the author’ attitude towards transporting iceberg?A. Pessimistic.B. Objective.C. Optimistic.D. Unconcerned.6. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?A. It is hard to use iceberg.B. Iceberg are a good choice.C. There are problems with iceberg.D. Man finds no other ways to solve water shortage.7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Shortage of water.B. Icebergs for water.C. Scientists and icebergs.D. Iceberg—scientists headache.CMany teens may feel anxious sometimes. It’s the kind of nervousness that makes you bite your nails before a big test. We spend more time online than we should. We feel good about ourselves or bad based on how many Likes and Followers we get on social media. Young people are developing a false view of life.On the screen, we see what people want to show us. People usually only post photos where they are looking their best. They are surrounded by friends and seem that they are having a great time. No one seems sad or lonely. In short, life isfabulous. But sooner or later, our young people compare their real life to it. They find that theirs doesn’t seem as fun or exciting and grow worried that they may be missing out.No wonder teachers are reporting more anxious students. It’s reported that a lot more college students feel ―overwhelming anxiety. The percentage jumped from 50% in 2011 to 62% in 2016. Anxiety is now the mostcommon mental-health problem in my country. It affects nearly one-third of teens and adults.Certainly, we can’t blame it on social media alone. We expect toomuch from our children and a lot of these expectations aren’t reasonable. Their schedules are packed with sports, clubs and homework. They don’t have enough free time. We want our children to succeed, and we don’t care how much it costs. As parents, we must have more balance. On one hand, we push too hard, and on the other hand, we make life too easy for children. We shouldn’t and can’t promise our children that they will always be happy. We shouldn’t try to protect them from the problems of everyday life. Let them solve the problems in person.8. What is the text mainly about?A. What causes teens’ nervousness.B. How to deal with teens’ anxiety.C. What a view of life means to people.D. How to treat social media appropriately.9. What does the underlined word “fabulous” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Wonderful.B. Encouraging.C. Anxious.D. Doubtful.10. Why does the author mention the numbers in paragraph 3?A. To draw teachers’ attention.B. To show teachers’ mental problems.C. To present the seriousness of teens’ anxiety.D. To show adults have more problems than teens.11. What should parents do to help their children out?A. Try to meet their expectations.B. Help them with their homework.C. Give them more free time to play sports.D. Allow them to solve their own problems in life.DIn life, once on a path,we tend to follow it,for better or worse. What's sad is that even if it's the latter,we often accept it anyway because we are so used to the way things are that wed don't even recognize that they could be different This is a phenomenon psychologist call functional fixedness. This classic experiment will give you an idea of howitworks and a sense of whether you may have fallen into the same trap: People are given a box of tacks (大头钉) and some matches and asked to find a way to attach acandle to a wall so that it burns properly.Typically, the subjects try tacking the candle to the wall or lighting it to fix it with melted wax. The psychologists had, of course, arranged it so that neither of these obvious approaches would work. The tacks are too short, and the paraffin (石蜡) doesn't stick to the wall. So how can you complete the task? The successful technique is to use the tack box as a candle-holder. You empty it, tack it to the wall. and stand the candle inside it. To think of that, you have to look beyond the box's usual role as a receptacle just for tacks and re-imagine it serving an entirely new purpose. That is difficult because we all suffer to one degree or another from functional fixedness. The inability to think in new ways affects people in every corner of society. The political theorist Hannah Arendt coined the phrase“frozen thoughts”to describe deeply held ideas that we no longer question but should. In Arendt's eyes, the self- content reliance on such accepted “truths”also made people blind to ideas that didn't fit their worldview, even when there was plenty of evidence for them.Frozen thinking has nothing to do with intelligence, she said,“It can be found in highly intelligent people.”12. What does the underlined word“it”in paragraph 2 refer to?A. The experiment.B. Functional fixedness.C. The path.D. The thinking.13. Which way is hard to think of to complete the task?A. Tacking the candle to the wall.B. Fixing the candle with melted wax.C. Using the tack box as a candle-holder.D. Lighting the candle tostand it.14. Which of the following statements will Hannah Arendt agree with?A. People should question.B. We should be used to the way things are.C. People shouldn't accept the idea that doesn't fit their worldview.D. The smarter people are,the more open to the new things they are.15. What's the passage mainly about?A. An interesting experimentB. A psychological phenomenon.C. A theory to be proved.D. The opinion of Hannah Arendt.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

I’m roaming the halls with my best friend, blissfully ignoring the bells going off every 50 minutes on schedule because, just today, we’re allowed to break the rules. I’m sitting on my desk, swinging my feet, and shooting the breeze(闲聊) with my English teacher, Mr. Carr, in a way that makes me feel almost grown up.It was maybe my favorite day of the whole year. Like the final layer of watercolor, the freedom and lightness I feel seeps(渗透) into the rest of my memories of that day and turns them just a shade rosier. If the school year hasn’t yet ended f or you, consider what you can do to make the finale count. Why? Because when it comes to human memory, not all moments are created equal. Instead, our remembered experiences are disproportionately(不成比例地) influenced by peaks(the best moments as well as the worst)and endings (the last moments). Nobel Prize winner Danny Kahneman, who discovered this phenomenon, called this the peak-end rule. It suggests that our judgment of a past experience is largely based on its most extreme point and its endpoint.I took advantage of the peak-end rule years ago, when my girls were young enough to want a bedtime story each night. I remember thinking that whatever strife(冲突) and stress had occurred that day, I could make the last moments count. I could end on a note of calm and act like the patient mom I hadn’t quite managed to be just hours before.Don’t mistake all moments as equal in significance. There’s a reason why yoga classes end with savasana(挺卧式). There’s a reason we eat dessert last. Do orchestrate(精心安排) endings. As Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll might say: Finish strong. Last impressions are especially lasting.4. What does the underlined word in paragraph 1 mean?A.Calmly. B.Surprisingly.C.Happily. D.Curiously.5. Which statement is true about the peak-end rule?A.Peaks in life can be remembered better than endings.B.The last moments matter the most in our memories.C.Our judgment of the past is determined by first impressions.D.The peaks and ends of experiences are easier to remember.6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A.How the author applied the rule to daily life.B.How the author treated her daughters.C.What struggles the author had in life.D.Why the author read stories to her kids.7. Why is Pete Carroll mentioned in the last paragraph?A.To prove the peak-end rule can be used in sports.B.To encourage readers to value the last moments of an experience.C.To explain why last impressions are lasting.D.To show the importance of doing sports. Not many drinks can offer the health benefits of tea, the strength of coffee, and the joy of chocolate like this super brew, yerba mate. Along with supposed benefits of supporting weight loss, concentration, and better digestion, drinking yerba mate continues to symbolize culture and tradition in South America.Consumed mostly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil — as well as in Syria and Lebanon — yerba mate (pronounced MAH-tay)is a hot, bitter, caffeinated tea made by steeping the dried leaves of the yerba mate plant. Containing roughly as much caffeine as coffee, about 80 milligrams per cup, mate has gained global popularity — much so that brands like Perrier, Red Bull, and PepsiCo have launched mate drinks. But in the last couple of decades, mate started experiencing a boom outside of South America. Karla Johan, a mate sommelier (侍酒师) from Argentina, attributes this partly to football players from Argentina and Uruguay bringing the habit to Europe, where they moved to play for local teams. In fact, one might say that mate is the “beverage of champions”. When Argentina’s national football team travelled to Qatar in December 2022 to play and won the World Cup, they carried 240 kg of yerba mate with them.Yerba mate, of course, eventually migrated over to the U. S. and in recent years has become a popular ingredient in everything from health elixirs (保健药) to energy drinks. Loose leaves can be purchased at most specialty grocery stores to make the drink at home. And if you want to get the full yerba mate experience, you can even order a cup for drinking mate and bombilla online, gather some friends, and enjoy the beauty of the South American ritual for yourself.Global messaging platform WhatsApp recently introduced a mate emoji, which points to mate’s growing popularity as people aim for a healthier lifestyle. That’s because mate, said Johan, contains a higher level of antioxidants than green tea or red wine, and a powerful combination of vitamins from the clay soil where it grows. In Argentina, mate is common, a faithful companion for matters great and small. Yet, unlike coffee or tea, it is not consumed in cafes: It’s what you have at home and at work, in the park and on the train, during class or at the gym.8. Which of the following is not the feature of yerba mate?A.Its bitter flavor. B.Its long history.C.Its ingredient of caffeine. D.Its function of losing weight.9. What makes yerba mate globally popular?A.Its unique coffee taste.B.Its health benefits.C.The support of famous football players.D.The launch of mate drinks by famous brands.10. Which is the following is NOT true about yerba mate according to paragraph 4?A.It can be easily accessible. B.It can cure some diseases.C.It can be made into energy drinks. D.It can be purchased online.11. Why do people show preference for yerba mate according to paragraph 5?A.Because it is a faithful companion.B.Because it can be enjoyed everywhere.C.Because it contains some beneficial elements.D.Because it is better than green tea and red wine.Smart entertainment is changing how we engage with leisure. But there’s something you should know. Being physically inactive or sedentary (久坐不动的) can increase health risks. 16What counts as being physically inactive? While there is no strict definition of what can be considered a sedentary lifestyle, researchers have a few different measures to assess what a sedentary lifestyle is. One measure is the time an individual spends seated or reclining (向后倚靠) during waking hours. 17 Some other researchers label people inactive or sedentary if they take fewer than 5,000 pedometer (计步器) steps per day.18In the short term, being inactive can increase depression or anxiety. It can also affect the way the body processes fats and sugars in the diet and lead to some weight gain i f you aren’t burning enough calories. Over the long term, sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of death from cardiovascular (心血管的) disease, diabetes, and cancer. How can you prevent being inactive?Health authorities recommend exercise at a medium level for either 30 minutes a day for five days a week or a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes per week. Walking is an easy activity to add to your day.19 A pedometer or fitness band can show you whether you are getting enough steps. Many people aim to take 10,000 steps per day, which indicates that you have met your daily physical activity goal. 20 but the value of being more physically active is worth it for its many benefits. As an ordinary senior school student, I’ve discovered a wonderful way to _________ life with a positive attitude — my daily bicycle rides. B ON SATURDAY, the director named Savoca at a natural history museum in Davao City, the Philippines, got a call from the local marine agency: A weak-looking whale in the Davao Gulf was spitting blood, leaning badly as it swam, and was very likely going to die shortly. They should come to pick up its body. When Savoca and his assistant brought the whale back to the lab to open it up, they found something shocking: more than 88 pounds of plastic waste jammed into its belly. “Plastic was just bursting out of its stomach,” he said. “We pulled out the first bag, then the second. we hit 16 rice bags, on top of the plastic bags, and the snack bags, and big nylon(尼龙)ropes.” The whale, a young male about 15 feet long and weighing 1,100 pounds, likely died of starvation and dehydration(脱水)brought on by the plastic filling its belly. Whales absorb water from the food they eat, and there was no sign when the food made it into its intestines(肠道)for many days. Its body was destroying itself from the inside: Its stomach acid, unable to break down the plastic waste, had worn holes through its stomach lining instead. Some of the plastic had been in the stomach so long that it had started to calcify(钙化). As the plastic pollution crisis grows, more and more turtles, seals, birds, and fish are found dead with their stomachs full of plastic. In 2015, scientists estimated that around 90 percent of all seabirds have taken in some amount of plastic; UNESCO estimates that 100,000 marine mammals die because of plastic pollution each year. “It’s just tragic that this is becoming normal, to expect that these whales will die because of plastic rather than from natural causes,” Savoca says. “We’re losing them faster than they can evolve to learn not to eat the plastic.” 4.What do we know about the young whale? A.The whale died of overeating.
