Franky Zapata has been driven by a single dream since he little: being able to fly. Not in an airplane, he says, since the windows function like a screen, but like a bird. As the French inventor was born colorblind, that ruled out learning to fly helicopters. So after several years spent racing jet skis, he invented hydrojets(喷液)which allowed him to at least fly above the water.

Then improvements in technology allowed him to go further, cutting the hydrojet from its tether and taking to the air.”When you fly with your body,”says Zapata, “even your hands affect the direction you want to go in. You feel the air through your fingers. It’s like becoming a bird. But it's also very hard. I have to fight against the wind with my legs so there's pain too. It’s not as peaceful as it looks."

Last Sunday the 40-year-old former jet-ski champion took to the skies above Paris at the Bastille day parade, capturing the world’s imagination with a board that can reach an altitude of nearly 500 feet-with the potential to go much higher and a speed of 140 kilometers per hour. Back in his workshop near Marseille, Zapata says while he enjoys showing his creation off to a crowd, what he really loves is flying alone.” It's wonderful when I’m flying around the Arizona desert, through the mountains. That's why I built this machine,” he says. “In my heart the best thing is the freedom."

Already, he has worked with the US and French militaries, with the French investing 1.4 million dollars in tests of the board.” If the question is do I think I will sell this to special forces all over the world, the answer is yes. A high school principal fell into a month-long coma and died on Sunday after selflessly donating his bone marrow to save the life of a teenager in France.

Derrick Nelson, who worked at West Geld High School in New Jersey, had the procedure at a Bergen County hospital in February. “After the procedure he did, he couldn’t speak and was lying in the bed,” his father, Willie Nelson, said. “His eyes were open and he realized who we were. But he couldn't move. He never spoke again." “We really don’t know the full story of what happened,” he added. "We were expecting him to come out of the coma he was in. But he didn't make it."

His Wife, Sheronda Braker, said that he "was a tremendous father to our beloved daughter Morgan and the best companion and life partner I could have ever asked for. He loved his family almost beyond belief. He was a man who carried himself with dignity, courage and compassion,” she continued. “His last kind and generous act on this earth in giving so someone else might live is a true testament to who he was and how he should always be remembered. We will always love him.

According to the school newspaper, Nelson donated blood during college in 1996-and it wasn't until 2018 that he got the call he might be able to save a life. Be The Match, a national bone marrow donor program, contacted Nelson in October and told him that he could be a match for a 14-year-old boy. Just a few months later, he went through with it.

The process to extract the bone marrow was rough and he felt terrible, he told the student newspaper, but "if it’s just a little b it of pain for a little bit of time that can give someone years of joy, it’s all worth it."

To help more disadvantaged students get into higher education, the College Board has come up with a scoring metric(度量标准)beyond its own test, which measures only verbal and math skills. The new tool is designed to help admissions officers detect if applicants have risen above limitations in their social or economic circumstances by expressing a particular character trait: resourcefulness.

The new metric, called the Environmental Context Dashboard, has been tried by 50 colleges over the past year and will be rolled out to 150 institutions this fall. Relying on public data, It looks at 15 factors in neighborhoods and schools that might negatively influence a candidate’s college readiness. These statistics include crime rates, education levels, joblessness, and the number of households that receive food stamps. If applicants come from a highly adverse background yet have decent but perhaps not high SAT scores, a college might then admit them.

This predictor of resourcefulness highlights more than tenacity(韧性). Resourcefulness shows an ability to seek support outside one’s self. It requires a clear purpose in learning. The new tool "shines a light on students who have been proved remarkable resourcefulness to overcome challenges and achieve more with less,” says David Coleman, the College Board’s chief executive.

The "dashboard" also has the advantage of not taking race into consideration in admissions, a practice being increasingly closed off by the Supreme Court and many states. At the same time, in emphasizing a key quality for academic success, it may help prevent discrimination(歧视)in admissions.

The tool is not an absolute measure of resourcefulness(智慧). It misses other types of circumstances, such as personal or family problems. Colleges must weigh many factors in admissions. Still, it could lead to a greater focus on character in education beyond the traditional pursuit of knowledge and career skills. Graduates who have excelled despite their hardships are highly desired by today’s emplo yers.

27. Who may benefit from the new tool?

A. The students with great verbal skills.

B. The students who are good at math.

C. The students who have much money.

D. The students from the poor families.

28. What does the new metric use when judging the candidates?

A. The marks from 50 colleges.

B. The difficulties candidates will face.

C. The equipment of schools.

D. The institutions candidates will study in.

29. What is the advantage of the dashboard?

A. It will help treat participates equally.

B. It will help improve the ability of races.

C. It will help make participates successful.

D. It will help provide clear learning purposes.

30. What kind of graduates are welcomed by employers?

A. Those with excellent characters.

B. Those who have experienced the hardships.

C. Those making progress in difficult situations.

D. Those with the traditional pursuit of knowledge.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In a class I teach for adults. I recently did something “unpardonable”. I gave the class homework! The assignment was to "go to someone you love within the next week and tell them you love them. It has to be some one you have never said those words to before or at least haven’t shared those words with for a long time.” Now that doesn’t sound like a very tough assignment, until you stop to realize that most of the men were over 35 and were raised in the generation of men that were taught that expressing emotions is not “macho”(男子气概的). Showing feelings or crying (heaven forbid!) was just not done. So this was a very threatening assignment for some.

At the beginning of our next class, I asked if someone wanted to share what happened when they told someone they loved them. I fully expected one of the women to volunteer, as was usually the case, but on this evening one of the men raised his hand.

He appeared quite moved and a bit shaken. As he unfolded out of his chair, he began by saying, Dennis, I was quite angry with you last week when you gave us this assignment.

I didn’t feel that I had anyone to say those words to, and besides, who were you to tell me to do something that personal?

But as I began driving home my conscience started talking to me. It was telling me that I knew exactly who I needed to say I love you to.

You see, five years ago, my father and I had a severe disagreement and really never resolved it since that time. We avoided seeing each other unless we absolutely had to at Christmas or other family gatherings. But even then, we hardly spoke to each other.

So last Tuesday by the time I got home I had convinced myself I was going to tell my dad I loved him.

It's weird(怪异的), but just making that choice seemed to lift a heavy load off my chest.

The next morning I was up bright and early. I was so excited I could hardly sleep. I got to the

office early and accomplished more in two hours than I had the whole day before. 注意:

1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

At 9:00 I called my dad to see if I could come over after work.

高三英语周测试题

虎门中学高三周测英语试题1 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A The small coastal town of Broome, in northwest Australia, is a remote village in the vast countryside. There are no traffic jams and hardly any roads. There is only the massive Australian wild land, where some houses are 500 miles apart and some driveways are 50 miles long. There seem to be only two main sources of entertainment out here: the sunset at the beach and Sun Pictures. Sun Pictures is a very different movie theater:The seats are park benches and deck chairs, but you’re also welcome to sit on the grass. It is the world’s oldest outdoor movie garden. Sun Pictures was built in 1916 on the other side of the globe from Hollywood. All the big films were shipped here and the lonely country was amazed. Broome resident Pearl Hamaguchi has never traveled far from home. But in the Sun Pictures chairs, under the deep blue night sky, she has been almost everywhere. “And we came back excited about Gregory Peck,” she recalled. This is one of the few places left in the world where you can see two sets of stars at the same time-----one set in the sky, the other in the film. Each night, dozens of people from around the world line up at the old wooden stand, with no computer in sight, and buy their tickets to the latest films. Sun Pictures is also a museum, exhibiting projectors(放映机) that date back to the silent films, a portrait gallery of the famous people who never knew about this place---- even though they came here all the time. Every once in a while, I’m told, you might find a non-ticket holder in your seat. That’s why it’s always a good idea to shake out your chair to make sure there are no spiders or scorpions. “We’ve only had a couple of scorpion incidents but no one’s been stung yet,” said Aaron Mestemaker, a tourist visiting from Michigan. Sun Pictures is a holy hall of movie history and a reminder that air conditioning and carpet are no match for grass and fresh air---even when the lizards steal the scene. 21. The first two paragraphs want to show that__________. A. living in Broome is inconvenient B. the life in Broome is boring C. few people like to live in Broome D. Broome is simple but vast 22. Sun Pictures is different from other theaters because _________. A. it is the most historical outdoor theater in the world B. the audience can either sit on chairs or on the grass C. it was built by some constructor from Hollywood D. all the films were imported here from Hollywood 23. Gregory Peck is most probably the name of_________. A. a place B. a film C. a movie star D. a country fellow

A It’s rare that you see the words “shyness” and “letter” in the same sentence. After all,the common viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers and that those shy people are not.A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership.Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40 percent of leaders actually are quite shy—they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands.Bill Gates,Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies". Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking,shy people take a cautious approach to chance.Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say.Along the same lines, shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically(内在地)motivated and therefore seek content regardless of achieving an outside standard. Being shy can also bring other benefits.Remember being in school and hearing the same kids contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in?Then what happened? Everyone turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which translate to a positive image. Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations. Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comfortable working with little information and sticking to their inner desires.Shy people are also more likely to insist on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent.Don't believe me?Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein, who once said,"It's not that I'm so smart,it's that I stay with problems longer."Obviously, finding certainty where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.
