Wishing to encourage her young son to make more progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her.

Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually found his way through a door marked "NO ADMITTANCE." When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.

Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. To her horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

At that moment, the great pianist made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing."

Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a melody. Together, the old master and the young beginner transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was amazed and, as it finished, they cheered.

That's the way it is in life. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren't exactly graceful flowing music. But when we put our trust in the hands of a Greater Power, our life's work can be truly beautiful.

Next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of the Master, whispering in your ear, "Don't quit, and keep playing."

D. He couldn’t see his mother and went to look for his mother.

23. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?

A. The boy and the piano master.

B. Padereski, a real master.

C. A wonderfully creative experience

She spent her summer vacation flying to Nigeria to campaign for the release of girls kidnapped by the extremist Islamist group Boko Haram, but also worrying about her grades, which recently took a worrisome dip. She faced President Obama about American drone policy(无人机政策) in a meeting last year, but finds it difficult to make friends with her fellow students in Birmingham, England.

And yet in an interview last August, Ms. Yousafzai said that she rarely watches television and deleted the Candy Crush game from her iPad to prevent a growing addiction. As a child in Pakistan, she had access to only a handful of books, she said, but one was a biography of Dr. King, giving her an early sense of what one activist could accomplish.

In a brief speech in Birmingham on Friday, she called the prize “an encouragement for me to g o forward and believe in myself.”

With the summer holiday just around the corner, it seems like everybody is busy planning their vacations. Here are some tips that can help you enjoy your holiday without emptying your pocket.

Travel off-season

Go to your desired destination while the demand is low and take advantage of huge discounts. During the peak season, the hotel and flight prices increase quickly, and you’ll likely spend more of your vacation time standing in line due to the rush of tourists. 36

37

Websites can help you find discount hotel rooms. Look for places that do not charge extra for children if they use the existing bedding. Stay with the locals. If you and your family are going to stay for a longer period, renting a small apartment is a good choice.

Eat like a local

Why eat at big chain restaurants when you can experience something new? 38 During your family trip, try new food where the locals eat. This will not just save money, but provide you with a new and different experience. For smaller meals and snacks, avoid restaurants and try street food or other takeout.

Don’t hesitate to bargain

Tourist-heavy places are known for overcharging for just about everything. Clothes, travel goodies, souvenirs, etc. are very expensive at these places. 39 Bargain hard to get the best prices.

Choose local transportation

40 Instead, take buses, railways or subways, which are always cheaper. If you are planning to stay for a while, you can consider renting a car. Hiring a car is much easier than carrying your bags everywhere if you are moving around a lot.

A.Save on hotels.

B.Surf the Internet while traveling.

C.Therefore, avoid buying anything there.

D.So it’s best to find out when the off-season starts.

E.Planning your meals is another way to reduce your travel costs.

F.For this reason, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to ask for bargaining.

G.As a tourist, avoid taking taxis whenever possible, since they are expensive.

Dear Mayor,

I’m sorry to write to you, but I feel it my responsibility to do so, because we should pay attention to our living environment while developing our economy.

Yesterday we were organized by our school to visit the XX Chemical Factory, which is a large factory and a main source of tax in our city. However, when we came out from the factory, we saw that the environment nearby was so badly polluted. The water in the river was as black as in and there were no living things in it. What’s worse, the crops there didn’t grow well.

We request that our government order the factory to take measures and deal with the waste before they let it out into the environment. Only in this way can we live a healthy and happy life.

Thank you!

Yours,

Li Ming

Text 10

When friends come to visit us in the evening, very often they seem in a hurry and look at their watches. It isn’t that our friends are all very busy; it is just that we haven’t got a television. People think that we are very strange. “But what do you do in the evenings?”they are always asking. The answer is simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at the wall. My wife enjoys cooking and often attends evening classes in foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we always go abroad for our holidays. I am always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to music, singing and playing chess together.

When there are power cuts we all have no electricity in the house. My friends don’t know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full as they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games. Yes, life is certainly possible without television.
