My mother was the one who always beat me. I always cried loudly to let the neighbors __1__ she was killing me. For example, if she acted as though she was about to __2__ her hand to me, I would open my __3__ and let the world know about it. If anybody was passing by out on the road, __4__ would either change her mind or just give me a few light touches.

Thinking about it now, I feel certain that just as my father supported me for being __5__ than the other children, my mother gave me more shout for the __6__ reason. She was very bright herself, but she liked the ones who were __7__. Jimmy, my eldest brother, I knew, was especially her __8__. I remember that he would tell me to get out of the house. “Let the sun shine on you so you can get some color.” He went out of his way __9__ to let me have a sense of color—advantage.

I learned early that crying out in disagreement could finish things. My older brothers and sister would sometimes come in from school and __10__ a biscuit with butter or something. My mother impatiently, would tell them no. But I would cry out and make a big noise until I got what I wanted. I remember well how my mother asked me __11__ I couldn’t be a nice boy like Wilfred. But I would think to myself that Wilfred, for being so nice and quiet, often stayed __12__. So early in life, I had learned that if you want something, you had better make some noises.

area big have in second and shop

There are three special things about a city. The first thing is about its population. A __10__ city may have millions of people while a small city may __11__ only twenty thousand. The __12__special thing about a city is that it has a large __13__. A city takes up a lot of land. People __14__ the city are close together. That is the third thing that makes cities special. In large cities, there are thousands __15__ thousands of buildings. The buildings are very close together. Many people live, work, or __16__ in each building. All these people use the streets and sidewalks. They use the parks and playgrounds.

Why do people drink? Often they are t____, but this can’t be the o___ reason, there must be other reasons, too. In many countries, when friends see e____ other, they often have a drink while they sit and talk. Many English people don’t need anyone else; they drink tea s____ times a day even if they are alone!

In most countries people say s____ special when they drink t_____. The English often say cheers. In all countries there are many places (c____, bars, etc.) of which the main aim is to sell drinks. Since there are so many of these places, it seems that many people drink more often than they r_________ need to.

The b_______ drink is water. Everyone needs water e_____. So water is very important for us.

One night I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, a distance of eighty miles. I was late soIdrove very 36 . Several times I got stuck(堵住) behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow(狭窄的) road, and I was shouting and 37 the steering wheel (方向盘) with impatience(不耐烦).

At one point along an open highway(公路),I came to a crossroads with a traffic light.I was alone on the road, but as I got 38 the light,it turned red and I stopped.I looked left, right and behind me.Nothing.Not a car, no 39 of headlights(车头灯),but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any 40 .

I started wondering why I refused(拒绝) to run the red light. There was obviously(明显地) no policeman around, and it certainly would not have been 41 in going through it.

Later that night, after I had climbed into bed,the question of why I stopped for that light 42 back to me.I did so because it’s part of a contract (协议) we all have with each other. It’s not only the law,but an agreement(协议) we have, and we trust each other to 43 it.

It’s 44 that we ever trust each other to do the right things. It’s a good thing because the whole structure(结构) of our society(社会) depends on trust. This whole thing we have going for us would fall apart(土崩瓦解) if we didn’t trust each other most of the time.We do 45 we say we’ll do;and we pay when we say we’ll pay.We trust each other in these matters(事情),and when we don’t do what we’ve 46 ,others will be angry or disappointed(失望的) with us because we violate (亵渎) the 47 they have in us.

跳过去,往下读;

I was so proud(骄傲的) of myself for stopping for the red light that night!

2、作者遇到了红绿灯,而且应该是开汽车,并且停下来了;

第二段和第三段是根据“stopping for the red light”展开说的。

36. A. fast B. well C. carefully D.quietly

37. A. pulling(拉) B. playing(玩耍) C. fixing(修理) D. hitting(敲打)

38. A. along with B. down to C. close to D. out of

39. A. condition(条件) B. suggestion(迹象,暗示)C. instruction D. relation

所以,选B。

40. A. way B. situation(状况) C. road D. direction(方向)

41. A. safe B. e asy C. dangerous D. wrong

42. A. came B. went C. rushed D. flew

第三段已经说了“I started wondering why I refused(拒绝) to run the red light.”,作者当时已经琢磨了一番了,所以这问题又重新浮现他的脑海,又开始琢磨。

43. A. honor(遵守,尊重) B. make C. protect(保护) D. believe

先看看文章里怎么写的“It’s not only the law,but an agreement(协议) we have, and we trust each other to 43 it.”

44. A. surprising(吃惊的) B. amazing(不可思议的) C. interesting D. frustrating(令人沮丧的)

而文中这句话“It’s 44 that we ever trust each other to do the right things.”,就像刚才说的那样,随

45. A. which B. what C. whether D. that

46. A. accepted B. told C. promised D. known

47. A. truth B. pride C. worth D. trust

It is only through forgiveness of our 44 that we gain the freedom to learn from experiences. But forgiving our. shortcomings doesn't mean denying (否认) that they exist. Instead, it means 45 them honestly, realistically(现实地).

And without love, life has no meaning. " Forgiveness is truly the saving grace(挽救别人的品质), which gives the people who make mistakes a chance to correct them.

Forgiveness is truly the saving grace(挽救别人的品质), which gives the people who make mistakes a chance

to correct them.

在第一段最后一句话"he found a new job"。

what had change his life"。

I used to think that nothing could call off what I had done."(意译:我曾认为之前的所作所为会是我心里永远都无法迈不过去的坎)call off指的是"取消,放弃,抵消作用"。

联系后线索,"from the person I was afraid most to see',显然是我不愿意见到的人。

其他选项,carefully(小心翼翼地),directly(直接地),sadly(哀伤地)都不符合情境。

实际上'forgiveness of our _______"即后文'forgiving our shortcomings'。跟shortcomings(缺点)最接近的是mistakes(错误)。

前一句中'in the beginning'(开始),显然接下来描述然后(then)。

When l am going to take every step in my studies and in my life,I try to think about my experience and be a grateful person.

( )39.A.fighter B.pioneer C.protector D.volunteer 从上文的“He thought that I would __38__ be able to speak well again or learn another language”,咱们知道,医生的话很权威,作者成为哑巴几乎是“命运”了,但是从后面的话“My mom,however,was a __39__.She sent me to a lot of teachers.

( )40.A.real B.right C.clever D.patient

she found the 40 teacher,Nina,to help me to make my dream come true.

作者的妈妈究竟找到了怎么样的老师呢?A.(真实的,不是假的)B.right(合适的)C.clever(聪明的) D.patient(耐心的)

41. D 42. A 43. D 44. C 45. C

( )46.A.lived B.moved C.worked D.climbed 文中是这么说的“You fought in a war,you 46 on,and then you got a beautiful medal for your success. You realized an impossible dream that people said you would never do.”

Every night after dinner, my mother and I would sit at the kitchen table. She would present new tests, taking her 36 from stories of amazing children she had read in newspapers and magazines.

The first night she brought out a story about a three-year-old boy who knew the capitals of all the states in our country and 37 most of the European countries. A teacher also said the little boy could also pronounce the names of the foreign cities correctly.

“What’s the capital of Finland?” my mother asked me, looking at the magazine story.

All I knew was the capital of California. “Nairobi!” I guessed, saying the most 38 word I could think of. She checked to see if that was possibly one way to 39 “Helsinki” before showing me the answer.

The tests got 40 . One night I had to look at a page from the Bible (圣经) for three minutes and then report everything I could remember. I said all I remembered. And 41 I saw my mother’s disappointed (失望的) face once again, something inside of me began to 42 . I hated the tests, the raised hopes and failed expectations. Before going to bed that night, I looked in the mirror in the bathroom and when I saw only my face looking back — and that it would always be this 43 face — I began to cry. I made loud noises like a mad animal.

And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy (奇才) sid e of me — because I have never seen that face before. I looked at myself in the mirror, blinking (眨眼) so I could see more 44 . The girl looking back at me was angry, strong. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts. I won’t let her 45 me. I won’t be what I’m not.

So the following nights when my mother presented 46 tests, I performed listlessly, my head on one arm. I pretended (假装) to be bored. And I was. I started to 47 other things. Soon, she noticed I was absent-minded. We had a talk and I told her what I thought and how I felt about the tests. Then the whole evening, she seemed to be thinking.

The next day, she presented me some easier tests. I found my pleasure and confidence back again, and we started to be on the way to make me a prodigy I could be.

In college, I wanted to be a math teacher. After completing four years of math courses, it was time to find a 36 . I wanted to teach in a big city at a nice school. But I quickly discovered there was a lot of 37 for teaching jobs. Finally my father suggested that I interview at a school in a very small town. The position there was for an English teacher! I went to the interview to 38 my dad. To my surprise, the headmaster offered me the job immediately. I accepted it because I needed a job.

When I arrived at the school in the fall, there was a new headmaster. He didn’t know 39 I was! Then I learned that I had to create a curriculum(课程)for each of my five classes. I didn’t know where to start. I was also asked to coach basketball and be the school drama(戏剧)director. And I had 40 taken a drama class! This was a little school, but it was a 41 job.

During my first year, I almost lived at school. I worked hard creating lesson plans and holding basketball and play practices. Many students came from single-parent families. A lot of them didn’t 42 about school. Some of them were

at our school because they had been kicked out of other schools. I felt very young and inexperienced.

Even though I didn’t have much experience, I was full of encouragement and love. And that’s what I gave my students. I tried to make my classes fun and interesting. Once my students knew that I 43 teaching them, they behaved better. My students became so dear to me that I couldn’t imagine teaching 44 else. I remember one student couldn’t 45 breakfast. So I always gave him some bread on his way out of my class. He 46 all of his classes but mine. I think it was because I took the time to show him I 47 cared.

Now when I think of my first teaching job, I have many pleasant stories. And even though the job took a lot out of me, it was really an unforgettable experience in my life.

As a young girl growing up in the 1930s, I always wanted to fly a plane, but back then it was almost unheard of for a woman to do that. I got a taste of that dream in 200l, when I rode in a hot air balloon on my birthday. I thought it would be exciting, but the 36 turned out to be uninteresting. We went up directly high in the air and right back down, moving around very 37 . During that time, I hoped I could skydive(延缓张伞跳伞)some day and my husband encouraged me. So when I heard there was a chance to let my dream come true, I decided to 38 it.

However, my children were very nervous about it. They 39 me to talk things over with my doctor before that. When I told him what I was planning to do, he said, “You could break bones(骨头)during the 40 at the age of 84!” Hearing that, I had to stop myself from laughing. But that was not go ing to 41 me on the ground.

On June 11, 2009, my family and friends got together in the area close to where I would land while I headed 42 in an airplane. When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay, my instructor(教练)told me it was time. I followed his 43 to get myself out of the plane. When we first 44 the air, the wind was very strong. But a few seconds later, it became better. We were in a 45 fall for about a minute before Jay pulled the parachute's cord(降落伞绳索).Then we just floated(飘浮)downward for about four minutes. Being up 46 the sky and looking at the view(景色)below was un like anything I have ever felt, much better than the hot air balloon.

“Just keep 47 ” is what I like to say. If there’s something you want to experience, search for it. If it’s something that is possible, make it happen.
