Have you ever heard some esthetical voice lingering around your ears from the very far away mountain which you are aspiring for? To Buck, this kind of voice is the most powerful strength which brought him to the wild he belongs to. As the leading character of Jack London’s masterpiece The Call of the Wild published in 1903 which helped him to be lasting famous in the world, Buck has experienced a legendary life just as London did. The intricate characters of the protagonist dog Buck is the dominating factor contribute to the novel perpetual. The rumbly path of Buck’s returning to the wild is a reflection of American social reality in the 20th century, and it is also a reappear of the gold rush age in American history. At the beginning of the thesis, an overall introduction to Buck’s story is expounded. It unfolded before our eyes how Buck’s character drive to maturity step by step as a consequence of the changing environment, including his graceful life as a pet dog of Judge Miller; his powerful leadership acting as a sled dog; his happy experience with john Thornton who saved his life and his returning to the wild after Thornton’s death. The second chapter summarizes Buck’s golden spirits reflected in the story such as his fighting spirit, appreciation to his benefactor and cunning and cruel leadership. In the third chapter, a summary of three reflections on Buck’s story is illustrated. They are: unyielding heroism , environmental determinism and praise for love and hope. Keywords: Buck, Jack London , wild, survival of the fittest

Introduction

Jack London was born on January 12, 1876 as a child out of wedlock across the bay in Oakland, California. London grew up in extreme poverty and had really rich life experience which were rarely experienced by other writers in the world. The Call of the Wild brought London worldwide fame, which was combined with his experience in the north when he was engaged in looking for gold. This novel gives excellent expression to the naturalistic writing style, and it expounds the dual influence of genetic and environmental on the survival of animals. What’s more, the author gives a clear understanding of the survival of human society on the 19th centry in America.

To some readers, the call of the wild means a liberation from sufferings from the civilized society and Buck appears as a super hero who gained powerful strength by going through trails and tribulations which the environment endowed him. To other readers, Buck was blamed for his losing his elegance which the civilized society has taught him. . Chinese scholars began to study、translate and recommend Jack London’s works from 1920s and it came to a climax in the 1930s. As for the research of his most famous work The Call of the Wild, I collected some informations in recent years. It has probably experienced the following two periods:the inherit and summarize period from 1997 to 1999. During this period, many scholars made great effort on teasing out predecessors’ research, and most of them took a overview of the social and historical criticism on The Call of the Wild. Another is the Interpretation of methodology period from 2000 to 2007. Unlike the previous study, an comprehensive analysis method was applied, many aspects were involved in the analysis of this great novel such as spirit、ecology、narratology and structuralism(Cai Qian 2009:025)

Looking back on Buck’s experience in the Call of the Wild, the nature of it is undoubtedly complicated. It embodies the affections and quality of human beings, the superman philosophy, naturalism and socialism. What’s more, it gave a

perfect expression to the survival of the fittest theory. This thesis is intended to analysis Buck’s complicated characters which can help us to study the social reality and today’s human nature further. Besides, Buck’s legendary experience can teach us a lot on how to be anticipated by new surroundings.

Chapter 1

An overall introduction about Buck’s story

Life is like an ancient song which contains both happiness and sufferings. It is a long road for Buck’s changing from a house dog into a king of the wild.

1.1 acting as a house dog of Judge Miller

Born with a honorable bloodline, Buck bid fair to follow in the way of his father to be Judge Miller’s inseparable companion for four years. Unlike other dogs who resided in the populous kennels or lived obscurely in the recesses of the house, Buck had the privilege of laying at Judge Miller’s feet before the roaring library fire, lingering around the garden leisurely or taking adventures in the outdoors.Everything seemed to be so sweet at that time.

1.2 acting as a sledge dog

Sometimes, God likes to play tricks on someone’s fate just like a naughty child, it is because of the joke Buck’s life track was totally changed. Sold by the gambler of Judge Miller’s gardener to the north, Buck became a sledge dog. At the same time, the inner nature of wild was woke up the first time he touched the northern world. During Buck’s life career as a sledge dog, he serviced three different groups. The first group was two half-breed men named Perrault and Francois who transported mail letters for the government. Buck learned a great number of new skills as a sledge dog and soon he acclimatized himself to this kind of life. There was a episode of his energetic and charming life, that’s defeating Spitz, the previous leading dog, and winning the leadership of the team. Then a Scotch half-breed took charge of Buck and his mates. It was a rough and tiring trip for the dog team for they had traveled 2500 miles within five months. After that, The dog team was sold to two American men Hal and Charles who had little knowings on how to command the team. It was because of their ignorance

that lead to the terminate of these dogs. Buck and his teammates suffered even more than before. The team were in agony of pain thus they could not under take the task any more. His teammates left him one by one, however, the stupid gold diggers were discontent with them. At last, Buck could not get up any more. He managed to stand up under Hal’s whip but failed. He could sense the impending doom but his master insisted on. When he was beaten to die, Thornton saved his life.

1.3 happy life with John Thornton

Buck recovered from his wounds gradually under Thornton’s meticulous love. In return, Buck showed his feverish and burning love to Thornton too. Unlike others, Thornton always treated Buck as his own child. He expressed his kindness to Buck using greetings and cheering words, and they had a long conversation with each other regularly.(Zhang Yong 2005:096)

Buck saved Thornton’s life for three times, and he also earned Thornton six hundred dollars which helped his master to pay off certain debts and offered him a chance to looking for gold to the east. But the truth was that in the journey to the east, Thornton lost his life.

1.4 returning to the wild

John Thornton was dead. The last tie was broken.Man and the claims man could no longer bound him from returning to the wild. After Buck’s returning to the wild, he took a revenge to those Yeehats who killed Thornton and he became the leader of a pack of wolves. Every summer, Buck mourned Thornton in the valley where he died.

Chapter 2

Different images of Buck

Taking an overlook to Buck’s transformation from a graceful house dog in the south to a powerful leader of a pack of northern wolves, we may find there are many intricate characters in the inner world of Buck’s mind.

2.1 Fighting Spirit

Betrayed by Judge Millers’gardener, Buck was sold to these dog dealers secretly. Soon he realized that his dignity was challenged seriously, and he would never be defeated without any fighting. When the ends of rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he struggled in a fury and growled menacingly until losing his consciousness. When Buck was thrown into the baggage, an unbridled anger broke out from the very depth of his soul, his jaws closed on the man’s hand who spang his throat till his senses were chocked out of him once more.

Acting as an excellent sledge dog, Spitz could never get along well with Buck. As a result,a fighting could’t be avoided without any doubts. Finally, they had a duel when chasing a snow rabbit. Buck did not take any edge at the very beginning, but he knew a lesson from curly’s trampling by 30 dogs when he was falling down because of illness :once you fell down, then this would be your terminate, and there was no middle course. “To show mercy means to show weakness” before your enemy. Mercy did not exist in the primordial life. It would be understood as fear, and such misunderstandings would lead to death. Of course, Buck won the duel and became the leading sledge dog. When the collapsed dogs struggled to stand up from the ground under the ruthless whip of Hal,Buck’s performance were never the same. He just lied down on the ground, ignoring the shower of whips, not struggling and roaring. Buck showed his resent and resistance to those who hurt him in a silent way. When it came to Jack London, it was his powerful spirit and fearless courage over death that brought him the

success of overcoming the incredible difficulties.(Kang Ning 2013:033)

2.2 appreciation to his benefactor

The first person Buck showed his appreciation to was Judge Miller. Acting as a house dog of judge Miller, Buck took the responsibility to please his master and his families. He plunged into the swimming tank or went hunting with the judge’s sons; he escorted the judge’s daughters, on long twilight or early morning rambles; he carried the judge’s grandsons on his back etc.

The second person Buck showed his appreciation to was Francois. In the very beginning of their contact, Francois’punishing the snow-white dog from Spitzbergen who had stole Buck’s food made Buck considerate him a fair, calm, and impartial man. What’s more, he insisted Buck a talented dog, even he once sacrificed the tops of his own moccasins to make four moccasins for Buck. In return for Francois’s trust, Buck tried to win every dog’s respect, and he worked hard as a leading sledge dog.

Unlike the love showed to his two previous masters, Buck’s love for Thornton was genuine and passionate instead of responsibilities. Buck’s love was expressed in adoration. He could jump off a cliff without any hesitation if Thornton asked him to do that; he could torn open one’s throat who teased Thornton; he dared to swim to a stretch of wild water in which no swimmer could live in order to save Thornton’s life; he was able to pull a one thousand pounds sledge for one hundred yards which earned sixteen hundred dollars in five minutes for Thornton. Even when Buck was desperate to chasing the mysterious and thrilling call from the wild, the love for John Thornton draw him back the fire again.

2.3 the inner nature of wild

Moving from the sun-kissed south to the chilly and icy north as the turn of his fortune’wheel, Buck entered the original wild which was far away from human civilization. The challenging life in northland seemed of magic and

mysterious appeal to Buck, and soon he fell in love with this cute place. The original wild began to wake up from the very deep of Buck’s soul. He realized and touched the great attraction of the call from the deep forest. All that stirring of instincts which at stated periods drove men out from the sounding cities to forest and plan to kill things by chemically propelled leaden pellets, the blood lust, the joy to kill——all this was Buck’s. This can be easily told in Buck’s experience of chasing the snowshoe rabbit as it mentioned in the novel “He was mastered by the sheer surging of life, the tidal wave of being, the perfect joy of each separate muscle, joint, and sinew in that it was everything that was not death, that it was aglow and rampant, expressing itself in movement, flying exultantly under the stars and over the face of dead matter that did’t move. ”(Zhang Yong 2009:063) This is a feral kind of life beauty in the world where perfectness are respected. The natural and spectacular pursuit of life is a reflection to individual intelligence and ability. Also it is a healthy and progressive spirit aspiring for freedom. Buck had freedom staying with John Thornton. But the feeling to the depths of the forest is a kind of exciting and charming freedom which worth everything desperate for. Therefore, after the death of Thornton, Buck returned to the free jungle full of mystery and adventure without hesitation in response to the calling which he fascinated for a long time.

2.4 cunning and cruel leadership

Once betrayed by the gardener, Buck was doomed to live a completely different life as he used to be as a vacant and gentle house dog. Working in a chilly and icy environment helped Buck to lose his fastidious eating habit, and he did something which was disgraceful. Learned from Pike, Buck once stole a hole chunk bacon without being suspected for he did it only when Perrault’s back was turned. What’s more, Dub, an awkward blunderer who was always getting caught, was punished for Buck’s misdeed. That’s the first time Buck used his cunning brain to get rid of hunger, but Buck’s cunning never stopped from here. Buck has openly threatened Spitz’s leadership before their final duel.He interfered Spitz’s

punishment to Pike, the malingerer who want to be absent from work. Though Buck was whipped by Francois, he won his first faithful supporter, Pike. When Buck protected Pike to gulp down the stolen fish from Spitz, more and more dogs became his supporter, Dub、Joy and even docile Billy. On one hand, Buck worked faithfully in the harness, on the other hand, he encouraged the rebels and led them into all kinds of petty misdemeanors. Francois knew Buck was behind all the trouble, but Buck was too clever ever again to be caught red-handed.

Buck’s cruelty was firstly shown in the sustaining fighting with Spitz as which can clearly seen in the following conversation:

“One devil,dat spitz.”remarked Perrault.

“Dat Buck two devils, ” was Francois’s rejoinder.(Zhang Yong 2009:041) Fighting for the leadership was never like a athletic game for it was never a easy story to lose one’s face when losing the game. The fact was one who won the game to survival, and the looser would’t have any choice to keep on living in the world. When Spitz disappeared from view, Buck just stood and looked on, showing no mercy on his face, the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who had made his kill and found his good.

The second time when Buck’s evil spirit was outburst was Buck’s finding the death of Thornton made by the Yeehats. He sprang at the foremost man, rapping the throat wide open till the rent jugular spouted a fountain of blood. Buck was like the fiend incarnate, ranging at their heels and dragging them down like deer as they raced through the trees. Even after Buck’s returning to the wild and becoming the leader of the wolves, he never stopped from revenging these Yeehats. It was said that hunters who failed to return to the camp were killed by the so-called Ghost Dog with their throat slashed cruelly open.

Chapter 3

Reflections on Buck’s life experience.

In the age of this complicated world, everyone is supposed to own a sharp sword in preparation for all kind of challenges which can appear at any time in any place. In the story of The Call Of the Wild, Buck’s success returning to the wild from the civilized society gave some reflections of the real society.

3.1 unyielding heroism

When Buck was about to be let out of the cage, he behaved full of wrath to struggle, he attacked the strong man with his sharp teeth. Nevertheless, all his endowers were in vain. But he did’t give up and continued a dozen times. He did the last rush with his endower. Unfortunately, he failed. He was so proud that he did’t want to quit. Though he was black and blue but he was not broken. That was the first time Buck showed his strong willpower and unyielding heroism.

Heroes are always those who are unwilling to be mediocrities. Actually Buck was an emulative dog. The conflict between he and Spitz was inevitable. He wanted and enjoyed to be the leading dog. In their final duel, the primordial dominance in Buck was encouraged. With the instinct and wisdom, Buck became the champion and he occupied the dominant position successfully. After Thornton’s death, Buck came back into the wild and he acted as a leader of a pack of wolves.

3.2 Environmental Determinism

When speaking of Environmental Determinism, the survival of the fittest theory can not be ignored. Survival of fittest is a phrase which is shorthand for a concept relating to competition for survival or predominance. Originally applied by Herbert spencer in his Principles of Biology of 1864, Spencer drew parallels to his ideas of economics with Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution by what

Darwin termed natural selection(Mechalith Millennium 2007) Just as its name implies, one who can adjust himself to the changing environment best, he can survive as the fittest.

In turns of Buck’s story, Jack London endowed more“instinct”than environment which leads Buck’s returning to the wild. But the concept of Spenser’s environment determinism which indicates that environment determines everything can be fully deduced by Jack London through Buck’s journey from civilization to wildness. The stateliness that comes from Buck’s noble blood and stoutness enables him to be endowed with some nobility, alongside with some leadership in sledge dogs as well as in the packs of wild wolves. As for the question, what made Buck such kind of cunning and cruel ruler? The answer is the inaccessible environment .Laking of food, Buck learned to steal food from his companions without being suspected;rushed upon by savage dogs, Buck learned to bristle his neck hair and snarl; being driven out by Francois from the warm tent, Buck learned to dig a hole in the ice to sleep in; being regarded as a enemy of Spitz, Buck learned to be an excellent sledge dog and even he made a long time plan to win a popular support from his companions.

3.3 Praise for Love and Hope

Although Buck hardly showed mercy to his enemies, he was never mean to show his love to those who treated him kindly like Judge Miller, Francois and John Thornton. What’s more, Buck showed his love to the wild. Perhaps it was because of the inner nature as a wild animal, Buck finally became a lover of the waste land. The longing in his nature never let him stop his feet. He should fight for survival, fight for a brand-new life. Life is a real hard nut to crack, so Buck’s love for his benefactors and wild are highly praised in this novel.

Buck’s hope was definitely the call of the wild. The instinct deeply rooted in Buck totally ran over him and brought him back to the wild. During that period, Buck killed a big black bear and two wild wolves. The wild in his blood burst out. He could kill whatever wild animals if he would like. Once he spent four days

chasing and killing a chief bull. He had patience, determination and perseverance. In another words, every cell in Buck felt a frantic excitement when he touched the wildness.

Conclusion

Literature itself functions as a special tool to understand society and history. The Call of the Wild , masterpiece of Jack London, brings us to a world where love and ruthlessness coexist together, club and tooth dominate the behaviour, mercy and cowardice submerged by fierce competition(Zhu Jianfei 2004:034)From the analysis above, we witnessed Buck’s adaption from a civilized society to the wild. During the long term journey, Buck suffered a lot. He once experienced struggle and dangers in which he learned his life lesson, and he also acquainted his genuine passionate love to John Thornton. The survival of the fittest and the super dog theory relied on each other, at the mean time, they repel each other.

To some degree, Buck is a mirror of the writer himself. Born as a bastard, Jack London has suffered a lot on the road of becoming world famous. His life experience of serving on a fish oyster on San Francisco Bay, sailing the Pacific on a sealing ship, and joining Kelly’s Army as an unemployed working man told him the truth : only powerful and strengthful man can survive from the cruel and unfair world! They are both talented and persistent when struggling with the unsmooth fate, sneering and resistant to the grim society and rulers, hopeful and desirable for returning to freedom、independence and dignity. Suffering form the crisis of global capitalism, London went to the north Las Vegas and soon fell into the gold enthusiasm. Then how to survive in such a chilly environment? Maybe that’s the reason why Buck is always shown to us as a strong, big size guy with 140 pounds’weight. All to all, when the two unbending souls embraced each other tightly, the novel won its national reputation.

In the story,Buck steals , rubs and kills without mercy, all this are supposed to condemned in a civilized society, but we never do that, because he did these for survival. London gave characteristics to Buck which intentionally or unintentionally lead us to a self-examination to our society. In the second part of

this thesis, an analysis on Buck’s golden spirits and aspiration : his fighting spirit, appreciation to his benefactor, desire for the wildness and his cunning and cruel leadership. From the very beginning to the end of the story, Buck was never blamed for losing his initial purity and honesty in the changing world, what we saw are: hope, love and instinct for survival(Liu Fuqin 2006:068)

1 J ack London was born in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, the illegitimate son of Flora Wellman, the rebellious daughter of an aristocratic family, and William Chaney, a traveling astrologer who abandoned Flora when she became pregnant. Eight months after her son was born, Flora married John London, a grocer and Civil War veteran whose last name the infant took. London grew up in Oakland, and his family was mired in poverty throughout his youth. He remained in school only through the eighth grade but was a voracious reader and a frequent visitor to the Oakland Public Library, where he went about edu-cating himself and laying the groundwork for his impending literary career. In his adolescent years, London led a rough life, spending time as a pirate in San Francisco Bay, traveling the Far East on sealing expeditions, and making his way across America as a tramp. Finally, temporarily tired of adventure, London returned to Oakland and graduated from high school. He was even admitted to the University of California at Berkeley, but he stayed only for a semester. The Klondike gold rush (in Canada’s Y ukon Territory) had begun, and in 1897 London left college to seek his fortune in the snowy North. The gold rush did not make London rich, but it furnished him with plenty of material for his career as a writer, which began in the late 1890s and continued until his death in 1916. He worked as a reporter, covering the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 and the Mexican Revolution in the 1910s; meanwhile, he published ov er fifty books and became, at the time, America’s most famous author. For a while, he was one of the most widely read authors in the world. He embodied, it was said, the spirit of the American West, and his portrayal of adventure and frontier life seemed like a breath of fresh air in comparison with nineteenth-century V ictorian fiction, which was often overly concerned with what had begun to seem like trivial and irrelevant social norms. The Call of the Wild, published in 1903, remains London’s most famous work, blending his experiences as a gold prospector in the Canadian wilderness with his ideas about nature and the struggle for existence. He drew these ideas from various influential figures, including Charles Darwin, an English naturalist credited with -developing theories about biological evolution, and Friedrich Nietzsche, a prominent German philosopher. Although The Call of the Wild is first and foremost a story about a dog, it displays a -philosophical depth absent in most animal adventures. London was married twice—once in 1900, to his math tutor and friend Bess Maddern, and again in 1905, to his secretary Charmian Kittredge, whom he considered his true love. As his works soared in popularity, he became a contradictory figure, arguing for socialist principles and women’s rights even as he himself lived a materialist life of luxury, sailing the world in his boat, the Snark, and running a large ranch in northern California. Meanwhile, he preached -equality and the brotherhood of man, even as novels like The Call of the Wild celebrated violence, power, and brute force. London died young, on November 22, 1916. He had been plagued by stomach problems and failing kidneys for years, but many have suggested that his death was a suicide. Whatever the cause, it is clear that London, who played the various roles of journalist, novelist, prospector, sailor, pirate, husband, and father, lived life to the fullest. 1

At the beginning of this century, many new writers emerged with the introduction of many new ideas. Among them, Jack London was the most popular one. His most famous novel is the call of the wild . Although it is a story about a dog, Buck, it vividly depicts the life in the primitive North where people rushed for gold and fortune. Buck, used to belong to a judge, was kidnapped and sold to North. Then he became a member of a dog-team pulling a sled . In the days of pulling a snow-sled, he learned to conform to the law of nature and obey the master. Finally, he found a basic instinct hidden inside him, which enabled himself to survive the tough environment. This is the call of the wild. When you read the story, you will feel that Buck is a man instead of a dog, struggling with his fortune and conforming to the law of nature. Though short, it is really a thrilling story. What you never forget is the tough life in the nature, the brave and crafty dog. Maybe the wild is calling you to go ahead. While writing for only 16 years throughout his life, London produced an amazing body of work among which, White Fang, Martin Eden, the Valley of the Moon are representative. In the 19th century ,the west of America was under cultivation .Hundreds of adventurers were moving to the west .At the same time ,it was said that gold had been found in large quantity in Northern California ,so thousands of people went to the west for gold .There were so many people ,but in the freezing cold North ,transportation was the biggest problem .At such situation ,dogs and sleds was the best choice ,so in the North ,dogs and sleds was the main transport tools then .Of course ,millions of dogs were needed urgently ,from then on ,there were plenty of dogs like Buck began their unfortunate difficult journey life.

8 Chapter7 summary

Chapter 7: The Sounding of the Call Summary John Thornton pays off his debts with money he earns from the bet, and he sets off to the east to find a fabled lost mine that is supposed to make a man rich. Together with his other dogs and his friends Pete and Hans, he and Buck wander in the wilderness, hunting and fishing and living off the land, until they reach a shallow place in a valley full of gold. The men earn thousands of dollars a day panning for gold, and the dogs have nothing to do. Buck begins to feel wild yearnings. One night, he springs up from sleep with a start, hearing a call from the forest. He dashes through the woods and finds a timber wolf, one-third his size. Buck begins to circle the wolf and make friendly advances, but the wolf is afraid. Finally, the two show their friendship by sniffing noses, and the wolf leads Buck away through the forest. They stop to drink, and Buck remembers John Thornton. The wolf encourages him to keep following, but Buck starts back toward the camp. When he arrives, Thornton is eating dinner, and Buck showers him with affection. For two days, he never allows Thornton out of his sight. Then, he hears the call more loudly than ever and is haunted by recollections of his wild friend. He begins to stay away from the camp for days at a time, hunting his own food. Buck has two identities at this point: one as sled dog in Thornton’s camp, another as wild hunter in the forest. He kills a bear and fishes for salmon the river; when the moose come in the fall, Buck hunts them eagerly. He cuts a bull away from the pack to kill him and finally brings him down after four days. Then he heads back to the camp. On the way, he feels a strange stirring in the wilderness, of something new abroad, and he feels a premonition of calami ty. His feeling is proven correct when he finds Thornton’s dog Nig and one of the dogs bought in Dawson, both dying on the trail. As he approaches the camp, he sees Hans lying facedown, arrows covering him. He peers out to where the lodge had been and sees Yeehat Indians dancing in the wreckage. Buck charges, cutting their throats with his fangs and killing several of them. The Indians scatter, and Buck finds the rest of his camp, including Thornton, dead. Buck mourns his dead master but feels pride at having killed the Yeehats. Henceforth, he will not fear men unless they carry weapons. He hears the call of the wolf again. His ties to Thornton broken by death, he heads off to follow it. He finds the pack, and one wolf lunges for his throat, but he breaks its neck easily. Three others try but pull back. After half an hour they all draw back, and one of them approaches Buck in a friendly manner. Buck recognizes him to be the wolf he encountered in the woods. Buck joins the wolf pack, and the Yeehats notice a difference in the local breed of timber wolves as years pass. They also tell of a Ghost Dog that runs at the front of the pack, singing songs and leaping above his fellows. They tell of a haunted valley—where Thornton lies dead—where an evil spirit dwells, and where, every year, Buck comes and mourns for a time beside the stream before loping away to rejoin the pack.
