On the day of the haptism , Shaindle and Feivel arrived early, earlier than Malka and her family.Malka’s mother-in-law, Yehudit, was already at the hall.“Hello,” said Shaindle cheerfully, never thinking what was about to happen.

To be successful in any aspect of life, you need to know when to use the carrot or the stick. Here are a few tips to help you decide whether it’s better to use the carro t or the stick.

With the kids

The carrot

When it comes to raising a kid, the carrot or the stick dilemma is quickly disappearing as too many parents take the carrot approach to the extreme. In child raising, the carrot should never be materialistic things. If you want to ask for good behavior with a reward, it should be with something that can’t be bought, say, trust.

The stick

Nowadays, no one likes to use the stick anymore, or in my father’ s case, the belt.I’m not overlooking child abuse, if you ever want to call it that, but I am encouraging parents to toughen up a bit.You don’t want your kid to test your limits only to find out he can get away with it.If you want to raise a kid, raise the hand and let him know it comes down on the second offense.

At the office

The carrot

People need encouragement and motivation to perform well. However, the carrot only really works well with employees who have already proved themselves. If you’ve got someone who can’t show up at the office before noon, the promise of a raise isn’t going to do much.On the contrary, if there’s a guy with a good work moral, he’ll thrive(grow stronger) when you add a promotion to the picture.

The stick

When considering the carrot or the stick in the office, remember that, overall, the stick is the more practical method in the office.A wise man, who just happened to be an Italian, once said “It’s best to be both loved and feared.” It’s nice to have everyone love you, but running a business isn’t like running a family. You need to have the stick constantly raised.

With the wife

The carrot

When it comes to marriage, always use the carrot.I’ve had a lovely marriage for many years, and I’ve always stuck to the carrot approach.

Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, and sometimes it’s the crack of a w hip that gets the horse moving.Try not to use too many sticks in the bedroom; the carrot is much more fun.60.What is the best title of this passage?

A.The author often gives more carrots to his wife to eat in the bedroom.

B.The carrot is much more fun when it comes to marriage.

C.On different occasions, the carrot or the stick is effective.

D.You need stick to get your horses to move faster occasionally.

Across the United States, there are several places where two independent towns grew together to become one city — but kept both their names.

Winston-Salem is one of them. It’s a mid-sized city in what’s called the plateau(high land), between the Atlantic Coast and the inland mountains in the state of North Carolina. The Winston part is a relatively new place, founded early this century. It’s home to the nation’s biggest open-air tobacco market.

The giant R.J.Reynolds Tobacco Company’s headquarters is in Winston-Salem, and Winston is th e name of one of Reynolds’ best-known cigarette brands.Fast-growing Winston soon surrounded the much older town of Salem, so in 1913, people in the area voted to combine them into a single place.

From a historical and tourist point of view, Salem, or Old S alem, as it’s called today, is the interesting and unusual part of town.

Salem was founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. They spoke German, and their community was religiously based, with single men and single women living apart in separate dormitories. The Moravians greatly valued women’s work and brainpower. In fact, one of the nation’s oldest boarding schools for young women—the Moravians’Salem Academy founded in 1772 — is still in operation.

Over the years, Salem lost its Moravian character. That all changed, though, when a nonprofit group began to rehabilitate the historic area. These days Old Salem is what’s called a living history museum, with exhibits, music, and tours of 18th-century houses, bars and Moravian dormitory buildings just seven blocks from the tallest skyscraper(high building) in Winston-Salem.

The historic community is booming again.Just as R.J.Reynolds is taking in millions of dollars making cigarettes across town, Old Salem is making about $ 15 million a year in tourism revenue (收入) and donations.

Bananas are one of the world’ s most important food crops. They are also one of the most valuable exports.Bananas do not grow from seeds.Instead, they grow from existing plants.Bananas are threatened by disease because all the plants on a farm are copies of each other. They all share the same genetic weaknesses. For example, the Cavendish banana is most popular in North American and European markets. However, some kinds of fungus(真菌)organisms easily infect the Cavendish.Black Sigatoka disease(黑叶斑病)affects the leaves of

Cavendish banana plants. The disease is controlled on large farms by putting chemicals on the plant’ s leaves.Farmers put anti-fungal chemicals on their crops up to once a week.Another fungal disease is more serious.Panama disease attacks the roots of the banana plant. There is no chemical treatment for this disease.Infected plants must be destroyed.Panama disease has affected crops in Southeast Asia, Australia and South Africa. There is concern that it may spread to bananas grown in the Americas. This could threaten an important export product for Central and South America.

The International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain supports research on bananas. The group has headquarters in France and other offices in the major banana-growing areas of the world. The group says that more research must be done to develop improved kinds of bananas. The group says that fungal diseases mainly affect only one kind of banana. In fact, there are five hundred different kinds of bananas.Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has said that the Cavendish banana represents only 10% of world production. The U.N.agency says farmers should grow different kinds of bananas. This protects against diseases that affect only one kind.Experts warn that disease may cause the Cavendish banana to disappear. This happened earlier to another popular banana because of its genetic weakness against disease.

68.What does this passage mainly tell us?

A.Bananas are the world’ s most important food crops.

Researchers at Iowa State University(ISU) and the National Institute on Media and the Family found that some gamers show at least six symptoms of gambling addiction such as lying to family and friends about how much they play games, using the games to escape their problems and becoming restless when they stop playing.

Addicted gamers played video games 24 hours a week, twice as much as casual gamers. Some addicted gamers even steal to support their habit, according to the findings that will be published in the journal Psychological Science.

While video games can be fun and entertaining, some kids are getting trouble.“I continue to hear from families who are concerned about their kids’ gaming habits. Not only do we need to focus on identifying the problem, but we need to find ways to help families prevent and treat gaming addiction.

第四部分写作(共两节,满分35分)

More than one-million school children in the United States have gone through a program called Reading Recovery. The program is for six-year-olds who are struggling to learn to read.

Reading Recovery came to the United States in 1984.Education expert Marie Clay of New Zealand developed the program.A number of other countries also use this method.Programs can differ from school. The Reading Recovery Council of North America says more than 25% of the United States public schools with first grades use the program.

The Reading Recovery method calls for a specially trained reading teacher to work with children one at a time. The lessons take a half hour each school day. They employ reading, writing and the study of the letters of the alphabet.

Reading Recovery lessons take place for twelve to twenty weeks.During the lessons, the teacher looks for ways that the child seems to learn best. Then the teacher works to help the students develop these strategies to solve problems in reading. The idea is for the students to continue to use and extend these strategies each time they read.

Reading Recovery students read many short books. Some of the books are written in a way similar to spoken language.Children alse read and write stories or messages in their own words. The material gets harder with time.

The lessons end when the students’ reading ability is within the average level of the class. The Reading Recovery Council of North America says eighty percent of the students who finish the lessons can read and write within their class average.

The council is a group with eleven thousand members. The group named a new president this month.Mary Jackson is director of special programs for the Fort Bend public school system in Sugar Land, Texas.Mizz Jackson says more than ninety-nine percent of the Reading Recovery students in the schools passed the state reading examination.

Some administrators may not like the higher cost of the Reading Recovery method compared to other ways.Teachers, after all, work with only small numbers of first graders. But supporters say it saves money in the end. They say it helps prevent the sad results and the expense of letting children fail in school.
