There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.”Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now,however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body.People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects on physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing;it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet.If laughter exercises the body,it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body.In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍耐)the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics,in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.

Recently I visited a history class at a local,low-performing high school where students read in turn from the autobiography of a famous American. The teacher interrupted often with comments and questions. The 18 students seemed to be into it,but it was such an old-fashioned—I guess to some educators—approach that I decided to see what other educators thought of it.

Was the read aloud technique bad or good? Was it time-wasting or useful? Read these comments.

“I have observed this most often in high school English classes.During aloud reading,I have observed students becoming absent-minded from the teaching. While this may be a proper way for some teaching points, such as pronunciation, stress, fluency, when done for expediency (权宜),I find reading aloud to be ineffective.”

—Steve Johnson

“We don’tencourage using a lot of teaching time to read aloud in high school English classes.Reading aloud selected passages that are especially difficult or rich in meaning is a frequent practice, but the focus is on the discussion over the text rather than the reading.Another typical use of reading aloud is when the class is reading a drama, especially a Shakespeare play, but our advice is for students to read after preparation rather than doing a cold reading.”

—Jim Fliakas

“We encourage a method that students practice reading independently,to increase their own fluency and understanding. This is done before sharing ideas with a partner,a group,or with the entire class. This method improves their understanding of the texts which are guided by the teacher.”

—Dave Levin

It all depends on the conditions, the students, the goal of the lesson and the style of the teacher.

25. In the opinion of Steve Johnson, reading aloud________.

A. may cause students to lose concentration

B. is always useful for a particular purpose

C. is a good way to involve every student

D. is ineffective in developing students’ fluency

,Fliakas meant________.

26. By saying “doing a cold reading”

A. reading something uninteresting

B. reading without preparation

C. reading in a cold environment

D. reading while having a cold

attitude towards reading aloud technique?

27. What is the author’s

A. Doubtful.

B. Supportive.

C. Worried.

D. Objective.

A world-famous Canadian author, Margaret Atwood, has created the world's first long-distance

signing device (装置), the LongPen.

After many tiring book-signing tours from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better

way to do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004. Together

they designed the LongPen. Here's how it works: The author writes a personal message and signature

on a computer tablet (手写板)using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic

arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via

webcams (网络摄像机) and computer screens.

Work on the LongPen began in Atwood's basement (地下室) . At first, they had no idea it

would be as hard as it turned out to be. The device went through several versions, including one that

actually had smoke coming out of it. The inventing finally completed, test runs were made in Ottawa,

and the LongPen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here, Atwood

conducted two transatlantic book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City.

The LongPen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the

author in real time. It has several other potential applications. It could increase credit card security

and allow people to sign contracts from another province. The video exchange between signer and

receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used.

“It's really fun”said the owner of a bookstore, who was present for one of the test runs.

“Obviously you can't shake hands with the author, but there are chances for a connection that you

don't get from a regular book signing.”

The response to the invention hasn't been all favorable. Atwood has received criticism from

authors who think she's trying to end book tours. But she said, “ It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn't afford it.”

28. Why did Atwood decide to invent the LongPen?

A. To set up her own company.

B. To win herself greater popularity.

C. To write her books in a new way.

D. To make book signings less tiring.

29. How does the LongPen work?

A. It copies the author's signature and prints it on a book.

B. It signs a book while receiving the author's signature.

C. The webcam sends the author's signature to another city.

D. The fan uses it to copy the author's signature himself.

30. What do we know about the invention of the LongPen?

A. It has been completed but not put into use.

B. The basement caught fire by accident.

C. Some versions failed before its test run.

D. The designers were well-prepared for the difficulty.

31. What could be inferred from Paragraphs 5 and 6?

A. Atwood doesn't mean to end book tours.

B. Critics think the LongPen is of little use.

C. Bookstore owners don't support the LongPen.

D. Publishers dislike the LongPen for its high cost.

书面表达:

Dear Editor,

Recently many places in China were blanketed with thick fog. The Air Quality Index in most parts reached 500.Everything around disappeared from our sight. Some highways were closed. More traffic jams and accidents happened .People had to wear masks .What’s worse, many people found it difficult to breathe.

The heavy hazy weather in China has been caused by many factors. First, the severely polluted environment contributed a lot to this nightmare. Second, the increase of cars in the city area plays

an important role. The cars send off a lot of poisonous gases.

In my opinion, We should call on people to use more public transport, thus reducing the number

of cars in the streets. Besides, some factories which cause pollution should be closed down. What’s more, We have to do more to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection . Only in this way can we expect to have more sunny days.
