Dogs might be able to help fight against cancer(癌症)! Researchers at California's Pine Street Foundation (PSF) say they have trained five dogs to smell cancer on a person's breath. This could be exciting news. If the cancer is found early enough, there is still time to stop it from getting worse.

Dogs have 20 to 40 times as many smell receptors(嗅觉接收器) as humans do. There are special cells(细胞) in the nose. Also, a dog's sense of smell may be 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than ours. But can dogs really smell illnesses?

PSF researcher McCulloch and his team asked four healthy people and one with cancer to blow into bottles. The bottles were then placed in different rooms. Finally, the dogs were asked to smell the bottles.

McCulloch says that dogs really can smell illnesses. "We were very surprised by how good they were," he told CNN. "They were recognizing who had cancer, and they were also saying who didn't." Each dog had been trained for three weeks to sit when it smelled cancer. 99% of the time, the dogs sat next to the bottles with cancer.

No lab test for cancer has given more correct results than this experiment. The results are so amazing that many experts(专家) question the dogs' smelling power. They want to know if there were other reasons why the dogs did so well. For example, how the dogs acted could have depended on the way of training.

However, most experts agree that this study is important. The information could help scientists develop a new and simple way to deal with cancer in the future. Once again, humans may be getting a helping foot—or nose—from their best animal friends.

C. Dogs were allowed to smell the bottles in the same room.

She thought about her mother. Her mother was always ready to help her, she put up with all of Fiona's dislikes and problems, she always forgave(原谅) her, she loved her a great deal.

Man decides to save a baby bear

Corey Hancock could have got into a lot of trouble(麻烦) for saving a baby black bear he saw on a forest road. But he told everyone about what he did, saying he would do it again.

Photographer Corey Hancock was hiking in Oregon when he came across a weak 3-month-old baby bear Monday night.

"I didn't have a choice, it was cold and raining; he was just sitting there in the rain, not moving. I couldn't leave him out there," Hancock told Inside Edition. "He seemed to be alone and dying. He was hardly moving at first and I thought he was dead." Hancock said he waited a few minutes to see if the baby's mother would return, but he soon decided the bear was too ill to be left behind.

The baby bear, weighing just five pounds, looked certain to die. Hancock decided to save him and carried him for more than two miles. He didn't even think twice about leaving the baby bear behind.

"I was carrying this little lifeless bear in my arms wondering if he was going to make it," Hancock said. "He took one breath. He was fighting to live on."

Hancock posted a photo of the bear on Facebook, asking for advice about where to take him. Someone saw the photo and told Hancock that he should take the bear to a wildlife center near Salem, Oregon. Hancock then drove him there. The baby bear is recovering well but can never be returned to the wild.

Some animal experts believe the hiker was out of line. Taking wildlife out of their natural environment is not allowed, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Corey Hancock could have paid $6,000 for what he did.

However, on Wednesday, the Oregon State Police said that Hancock, who said he felt "a special connection with that little bear", would not get in trouble for what he did.

47. Where did Hancock find the baby bear?

48. Would Hancock have to pay for what he did?

49. What do you think of Hancock?

About 6 months ago, I joined a club. Every morning, a personal trainer there worked out at the same time. It seemed that he did everything quite 1 , although I knew too well how hard he was working.

A couple of weeks ago, I was watching him do chin-ups(引体向上). He made them look effortless. I asked him if I could give it a try. He stepped aside and helped me. I pulled myself up without 2 ...once... then twice. That was all I had in me. I told him that was all I had, so he stepped up behind me and pushed me up for a third and fourth "pull". It 3 so good.

The next day when I was done with my workout, I asked him 4 and help me again. Again, I did two. I thought it was a shame to only do two. He told me that when they were training firefighters, the men were required to do five chin-ups, and women were required to do one or two. He explained that most people couldn't do 5 at all. At this point I should probably add that I am 50 years old...and a woman.

From the story I know that I did it because he told me I could!

I want to be like my trainer, standing there behind the people that I love, encouraging them, believing in them and being ready to catch them when they get tired. I will be the one that is there on the 6 and third day making sure they try again, because I know they CAN.

Research shows you'll do better work if you take more downtime. Keep that in mind.

It's Sunday evening. But instead of relaxing with your family, you're sitting in front of your home computer. There are just a few emails you have to send out before the week starts, a couple of things you want to do in the quiet before the phone calls. You're tired. But it needs to get done, so you push through.

If that is happening, you should know it's bad for your brain. Scientific research explains that many of us have learned from unpleasant experiences: Push yourself through too many hours or days of work and your brain starts to push back. Ideas that once came up to you easily now seem hard to think of, and work that you usually finish quickly is now quite difficult.

In fact, scientists say you almost certainly need more rest than you're getting.

Here's how to start doing it right:

◆Take short play breaks.

Reading about this research, I finally understand why it often feels necessary for me to stop in the middle of writing something, sometimes in mid-sentence, and play a computer game for a few minutes. Switching(转换) our attention to something fun like a game gives a different part of our brain the chance to step in and problem solve.

◆Take trips more often.

Most Americans have 10 days' holiday time each year. That's not enough—and many of them don't even take all of it. Research has found that most Americans ended each year with nine unused holiday days. What a pity! Taking trips, especially if you travel to a different environment, is healthy for your brain.

◆Take one day—or at least one evening—off every week.

In one experiment, five computer programmers working every evening were told to keep one evening work-free. Though they were not fully willing to try it, fearing work would pile up during the breaks, they ended up loving the change. Months later they reported better work-life balance(平衡). Clearly, more hours spent working does not actually mean better work.

◆Consider a mid-day nap(午睡).

I know, it's not practical in every job or workplace. But research finds that people who take naps are more productive, and make fewer mistakes than those who don't. And one reason so many people feel sleepy in the late afternoon may be that napping is hardwired into our systems, something even the ancient Romans did.

7. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. We have to give up part of our rest.

B. We have a work-life balance problem.

C. Facing our health problems is necessary.

D. Doing something fun is good for our health.

8. We need to take more trips because ______.

A. so many people feel sleepy in the late afternoon

B. our brain needs the chance to step in and problem solve

C. a trip to a different environment is healthy for your brain

D. more hours spent working does not actually mean better work

9. The underlined phrase "pile up" means "______"

A. become more and more

B. get harder and harder

C. change their daily plan

D. be forgotten completely

10. Which might be the best title for the passage?

A. Vacations help us be more productive

B. It's time to consider a mid-day nap now

C. How tiredness stops us from working better

D. Why taking time off is good for your brain

7. ______________ 8. ______________

如附(1)空__61__. __63__. _64__. 再看段落中还有“face in this way”,所以,排除E,正确答案是D。_64_.
