It was at the end of 2005 that Liberia elected its first woman president — Mrs Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf. The 67 year old grandmother was elected only a few years after two terrible civil wars.

During the 2005 election, Johnson-Sirleaf inspired 51% of the women in Liberia to vote — up from 15% in the years before. President Johnson-Sirleaf encouraged each person in her country to take part in rebuilding their count ry. She knew that one of the important requirements for long-t erm development and progress is that each person should play their part in building a harmonious and prosperous society. As a young girl, Ellen Johnson proved to those around her that she could play her part. At the age of 8 she started playing soccer on the all boys' team at her Liberian elementary school. From 1948 to 1955 she studied accountancy and economics in the Liberian capital of Monrovia. After her marriage at 17, she travelled to America

in 1961 and continued her studies, obtaining a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, and in 1971, a master's degree in government management from Harvard University. When she returned she took a job in the government of Liberia, then with the United Nations and the World Bank before finally becoming the president. Now she is a hero to many because of her efforts to work for justice and equality. She even spent time in prison while working to improve her country. As president she has a very difficult job to bring life to a suffering nation. She will have to use a great deal of heart, creativity and energy. But the woman known as the “Iron Lady” is confident that she has the ability to “change troubles into opportunities”. One of her aims is to make sure everyone is educated in order to bring positive change and happiness to the country. She has worked hard to improve schools by bringing teachers and learning materials to her nation. As well as education, she is also creating jobs by building homes and providing basic health care and food for all the people of Liberia. This includes as special program to eliminate one of their biggest killers: malaria. She is also working with former child soldiers t o help them learn to live in peace with their neighbours and families. With President Johnson-Sirleaf's guiding hand, people are working together for peace and development.

3. B 解析:be connected with …与……

7. A 解析:从结构上分析,本句话的主语为公园,as well as是插入语,不影响主谓一致,they spent so much time on 是定语从句,修饰先行词hills,因此选A。
