Thinking About Thinking

As a public school superintendent (督导), I believe the best way to prepare students for colleges and careers is to focus on providing instructional programs and opportunities that help them become good thinkers. T o do this, teachers and actually

everyone else in a community, should play a role as a “cognitive coach” to students, helping develop good thinkers among your youth.

The best way for you to become a cognitive coach is to seek out and engage school children and adolescents in meaningful conversations. The objective here is to get kids talking about what they think, how they feel, and what they believe whenever and wherever you may find them. It may be in a classroom. It may be at the grocery store. It may be at a basketball game. It doesn’t matter where as long as you engage students in a topical conversation and, hopefully even a debate. Mainly, you want to encourage students to voice their opinion about things. Get them to take a position on “this thing, or that thing” and ask them to support their position with evidence. Curiously enough, the simple process of engaging students in real life conversations and debates will serve to strengthen what they have learned in the classroom, and help them create their own knowledge about a subject or a topic.

Learning indicates that a student has been exposed to material, understands the material, and can recall the information. Knowledge, on the other hand, goes beyond recall and includes information processing, application to other situations, consideration of meaning, and contrasting with other concepts. Naturally, the topic of conversation you engage in with one of your learners will differ from student to student, and in the level of complexity based on child’s age and developmental level. Even a kindergartener has an opinion about things that are going on in his or her life. Engaging in conversation with any members of your learning community in

ways that get at what they have learned and what they know will help them develop higher order reasoning skills.

A student’s synthetic thinking (综合思维)process occurs when a respected adult asks a question, particularly a question that requires reflection. I think all adults in a community have a responsibility to help children with this process, with the goal of producing independent thinkers.

24. According to the writer, what most helps develop students’ thi nking?

A. Enlarging one’s knowledge.

B. Learning from respected adults.

C. Attending instructional programs.

D. Making evidence-based arguments.

25. Which is the best question raised by a cognitive coach?

A. What have you learnt recently?

B. Will you pay by the credit card?

C. Where are you going this weekend?

D. How do you like this basketball team?

26. The writer mentions a kindergartener in Paragraph 3 in order to __________.

A. emphasize the importance of being a good thinker

B. suggest that education should start at an early age

C. prove that even children have their own ways of thinking

D. explain the necessity of choosing proper conversation topics.

27. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. T o state an education idea.

B. To assess a teaching strategy.

C. T o introduce a learning method.

D. T o compare different education methods.

Copycat Elephants

You may have seen a talking parrot on a TV show, in a movie, or even in someone's home. The parrot has learned to copy sounds that people make. Birds are not the only animals that can copy the noises they hear. Dolphins, bats, and some apes also copy sounds. Now we can add elephants to this list of copycats.

Dr. Joyce Poole is a zoologist. She studies the sounds of elephants. While she was in Kenya, she would hear strange noises made by Mlaika after sunset. Mlaika was a 10-year-old African elephant.

Mlaika lived near a highway. Dr. Poole says, "I could not tell the difference between Mlaika's call and the distant truck noise." She and other scientists studied Mlaika's sounds. It turned out that Mlaika was copying the sounds of the trucks driving by. Why would Mlaika copy trucks that she heard going by on the highway?Animals that are able to copy sounds may enjoy practicing new sounds. When they are kept outside of their natural environment, they may copy unusual sounds. That may be why an elephant would copy the sound of a truck.

"Mlaika was not the only copycat elephant," Dr. Poole says. Calimero is a 23-year-old male African elephant. He spent 18 years with two female Asian elephants. Asian

elephants make chirping sounds (sounds made by birds) to talk with one another. African elephants usually do not make chirping sounds. But Calimero now does. He is copying his Asian elephant friends. Dr. Poole says that elephants need to form bonds with their family and friends. She says, "They make sounds to communicate with each other. When they are separated, they use sounds to keep in contact. "

Parrots, dolphins, humans, and elephants show that being a copycat is one way that animals and people make new friends and keep old ones.

28. According to the passage, what does Mlaika copy?

A. The sound of people.

B. The sound of trucks.

C. The sound of Calimero.

D. The sound of birds.

A. T o clarify the meaning of copycat elephants.

B. To show the cleverness of African elephants.

C. T o add another example of copycat elephants.

30. From Paragraph 4, we can know________________________.

A. how long it takes for an elephant to learn a new sound

B. why the African elephant can make chirping sounds

C. why the Asian elephants make noises after sunset

D. how Asian and African elephants are alike

31. According to the passage, why do some animals like to be copycats?

A. T o keep in touch with nature.

B. To please people and other animals.

C. T o make new friends and keep old ones.

D. T o avoid the danger from the outside world.

Texting patients to remind them to take drugs could prevent the deaths of thousands of people from stroke or heart attack and save millions of pounds each year, a new study suggests.

Currently 500 million is wasted each year because patients stop taking drugs. However a new study by Queen Mary University of London showed that sending a text reminder improved patients' taking pills by 64%.

Not only would it stop the National Heath Service wasting millions on drugs, it would also stop thousands of people dying needlessly because they fail to take medicine that lowers their cholesterol or blood pressure.

Professor David Wald, Consultant Cardiologist and Lead Author, Queen Mary University of London, said, "An important and overlooked problem in medicine is the failure to take prescribed medication(处方药). The results of this trial show that text message reminders help prevent this in a simple and effective way. More than just a reminder, the texts provided the link to identify patients who needed help. "

Around a third of people do not take their treatment as prescribed(按照要求). Some patients forget to take their tablets and others stop because of uncertainty over the benefits or harms of treatment.

Researchers asked 303 people over a six month period to take part in a study to find out if texting would be beneficial.

The "text message" group received texts every day for two weeks, alternate days for two weeks and then weekly for 6 months, asking if they had taken their medication that day. Patients who had not, or did not reply, were telephoned and offered help.

In the "no text" group, 25 percent of patients stopped their medication completely or took less than four fifths of their prescribed treatment, compared with only 9 percent in the "text message" group.

David Taylor, Emeritus Professor of Pharmaceutical and Public Health Policy at UCL, added, "The implications of these results are considerable from both an economic and a health gain perspective. The method is not limited to cardiovascular disease prevention and could be used for patients on treatment for other diseases. "

32. Why is a large amount of medical fee wasted every year?

A. Patients take too much medicine.

B. Patients don't go to hospital in time.

C. Patients forget the doctor's instructions.

D. Patients don't take medicine as instructed.

33. The percentage of people who don't act on the doctor's directions is about .

A. 9%

B. 25%

C. 33.3%

D. 64%

34. What did researchers do with patients who didn't reply to their text messages?

A. They just left them alone.

B. They reminded them by telephone.

C. They contacted them on the internet.

D. They visited them in their apartment.

35. What do we know from what David Taylor said?

A. Texting patients is beneficial.

B. All patients need reminding by texting.

C. The benefits of texting are not obvious.

D. The method should be adopted by all hospitals. .

I’m 30 years old, and there are several things that life has taught me that I want to share with you. Here are the 4 lessons that life has taught me in the past 30 years.

1.Take care of your body

Life is “unfairly” biased(偏向的)towards people who “look good,” like it or not.So it’s important that you do all that is in your power to look your best. 36 You will live longer, and you will live happier, if you take care of your body; you may even get promoted faster on your job.Remember that your health is really your greatest wealth.

2. 37

No one taught me to save when I was growing up; no one told me the importance of saving.Fortunately I was able to learn the value of saving through reading great books like “The Millionaire Next Door”.What I want to teach others is to save at least twenty percent of your income. If you are to be wealthy, you must not just earn a lot, you must save a lot.

3.Think in the long term.

In high school I was thinking about college, in college I was thinking about life after college.I’m designing my life and I’m making decisions today that will enable me to live the life I desire when I’m in my 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. You have to think in the long term; you have to see the “big picture.” 38

4.Realize the power of focus

Focus, focus, focus…39 If you fail in this lifetime, you will fail because of broken focus. If you focus on the goals that are most important to you, you will achieve them. The problem is that there are so many distractions. 40 Winners decide to major on majors, and they even let important things slip, because they just focus on achieving what is critical to their goals.
