1.在中国北方人工造林，提高了北方地区森林覆被率、增加了低中产区粮食产量、有效地缓解了沙漠化严重程度、大幅度减少了水土流失面积和增加了北方地区生物碳储量。但跟踪研究发现：中国北方人工造林存在着蒙新区防护林保存数量低下，低质防护林比例较大、衰退现象严重，防护林在沙漠化防治中的作用有限，以及防护林经营理论技术不能与经营实践相结合等问题。 从世界植被的自然分布我们可以看出，森林分布在湿润型的寒带、温带和热带雨林地区。大面积的森林一般都生长在年降水量为600毫米以上的湿润地区或半湿润地区。所以一般认为，在年降雨量小于400毫米的地区是不适合种树的。在降雨量大的地区造林，森林可以缓解径流，通过涵养一部分水源，使降雨细流化，调节地下水资源。而在干旱地区或半干旱地区，如果大面积的种植树木，因为没有足够的水资源来供给树木生长造成树木的枯亡，结果不可避免的是：年年种树年年死。虽然每年的植树量可以作为业绩被统计了，树木的存活量往往被忽略不计。如果有些树木适应环境生存下来了，也可能因此引起土地的更加干燥，因为不多的水资源都被大面积的树林所吸收和蒸腾蒸发了，且造成树林和人蓄争水的现象。因此干旱地区是不应提倡大力植树造林，并且在北方干旱地区大规模造林，将可能加剧北方的干旱状况。 2.三北防护林体系建设是我国第一个规模宏大、规划期长达73年、跨世纪的国家级重点林业生态工程。甘肃地处我国西北风沙前沿，干旱缺水、植被稀疏、水土流失严重，是全国三北防护林工程建设的主战场之一。其生态功能有： 河西地区北部风沙沿线形成了长达1200公里、面积460万亩的防风固沙林(带)，130万亩的农田林网，保护高产农田900多万亩，有效改善农业生产条件，大幅提高土地生产力，保障粮食稳定增产。近年来，沙化土地得到初步治理，沙化扩展趋势基本遏制，风沙危害和沙尘暴发生频率不断降低。黄土高原区土壤侵蚀模数减小，每年减少输入黄河泥沙量8000万吨，水土流失得到有效治理。 3.我国自实施退耕还林工程以来，对改善生态环境，减少水土流失，调整农村产业结构，促进农民增收发挥了重要作用。但我国现行的退耕还林政策规定的补助年限为：还草补助2年，经济林补助5年，生态林补助暂按8年计算。但我认为我国现行的退耕还林政策也存在一些问题：在补助年限之内，农民的生存问题暂时得到了解决，但退耕补助一停，百姓生活就会陷入困难。从长期来看，林木到了采伐期，补贴停止，个体农户和市场直接接触，面对市场的利益或市场的风险，个体农户都有可能过渡采伐，乱砍滥伐，甚至复垦。为巩固退耕还林成果，解决退耕农户生活困难和长远生计问题，国家必须大力发展退耕还林后续产业。因为积极发展退耕还林后续产业，不仅可以巩固退耕还林成果，还可以增加农民收入，以免农民毁林复耕，各地区应结合当地资源优势，科学合理地选择后续产业开发的突破口。 4.长江上游天然林保护工程以从根本上遏制生态环境恶化，保护生物多样性，促进社会、经济的可持续发展为宗旨；以对天然林的重新分类和区划，调整森林资源经营方向，促进天然林资源的保护、培育和发展为措施，以维护和改善生态环境，满足社会和国民经济发展对林产品的需求为根本目的。对划入生态公益林的森林实行严格管护，坚决停止采伐，对划入一般生态公益林的森林，大幅度调减森林采伐量；加大森林资源保护力度，大力开展营造林建设；加强多资源综合开发利用，调整和优化林区经济结构；有利于长江流域生态环境的保护，并林区建立起比较完备的林业生态体系和合理的林业产业体系，充分发挥林业在国民经济和社会可持续发展中的重要作用。
