Section B

Directions:Read the following passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.

(A)

Revenge is one of those things that everyone enjoys. People don’t like to talk about it, though. Just the same, there is nothing more satisfying or more rewarding than revenge. The purpose is not to harm your victims but to let them know that you are upset about something that they are doing to you. Careful plotting can provide you with relief from bothersome coworkers, gossiping friends, or nagging family members.

Coworkers who make comments about the fact that you are always fifteen minutes late for work should be taken care of. All you have to do is get up an hour extra early. If not true, what you can do is very simple. Before the sun comes up, drive to each coworker’s house. Reach under the hood of your coworker’s car and disconnect the center wire that leads to the distributor cap. The car will be unharmed, but it will not start, and your friends at work will all be late for work on the same day. If you’re lucky, your boss might notice that you are the only one there and will give you a rise.

Gossiping friends at school are also perfect targets for a simple act of revenge. A way to trap either male or female friends is to leave phony messages on their lockers. If the friend that you

want to get is male, leave a message that a certain girl would like him to stop by her house later that day. With any luck, her boyfriend will be there. The girl won’t know what’s going on, and the victim will be so embarrassed that he probably won’t leave his home for a month.

When Mom and Dad and your sisters and brothers really begin to annoy you, harmless revenge may be just the way to make them quiet down for a while. The dinner table is a likely place. Just before the meal begins, throw a handful of raisins (葡萄干) into the food. Wait about five minutes and, after everyone has begun to eat, cover your mouth with your hand and begin to make odd noises. When they ask you what the matter is, point to a raisin and yell, “Bugs!”Immediately, they’ll dump their food in the disposal, jump into the car, and head for McDonald’s. That night, you’ll have you first quiet, peaceful meal in a long time.

Such a revenge does not have to hurt anyone. The object is simply to let other people know that they are beginning to bother you.

65. According to the passage, a revenge is .

A. to amuse the victim

B. to react to those who bother you

C. to hurt those who bother you emotionally

D. to hurt those who bother you physically

66. As a revenge, you might come first and get a rise by .

A. making your colleagues come late

B. getting up earlier than your colleagues

C. destroying your colleagues’ cars

D. pleasing your boss

67. The family members dumped their food in the disposal because .

A. they thought their food had been spoiled

B. they wanted to eat out

C. they wanted to have a peaceful meal

D. they didn’t like the food with raisins

68. The best title for the passage is .

A. Creative Revenge

B. Harmless Revenge

C. Well-planned Revenge

D. Humorous Revenge

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.

The shoes--- named Square Eyes---contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.

The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. “And I wanted to tackle that with my design.”

Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.

Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.

Existing pedometers(计步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy tee nagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That was one of my main design considerations.”

72. According to Swan, the purpose of her design project is to _____.

A. keep a record of the steps of the wearer.

B. deal with overweight among teenagers.

C. enable children to resist the temptation of TV.

D. prevent children from being tricked by TV programs.

73. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?

A. They regulate a child’s evening TV viewing time.

B. They determine a child’s daily pocket money.

C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.

D. They contain information of the receiver.

74. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?

A. The exact number of steps to be taken.

B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.

C. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.

D. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.

75. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight

B. Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise

C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise

D. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time

Section C

Directions:Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. Different ways of making friends over the Internet

B. Forming a regular “ chat ” community

C. The changes the Internet has brought to our life

D. Meeting Internet friends face to face

E. Extension of friends over the Internet

F. Maintenance of friendship by keeping contact

76.____

We live in the information age, which is changing many of the ways in our daily life. One of the most interesting developments of the information age is the Internet, which is a vast network of computers that link people, businesses and communities around the world.

77._______

How do we make friends using the Internet? One way is to search for websites that have topics that interest us. For example, you might be interested in football. Then you could search for a site run by a popular football club. There are hundreds of football sites, and most of them have a special website for their fans. The same is true of popular culture, and many popular music bands have websites. Once you have located the right football club or pop group, then you will see where to click in order to “chat”with other fans. The word “chat” has got popular because of the Internet, which means a light conversation among friends. Another way to make friends using the Internet is to access sites that are devoted to this purpose. When you search the Internet for these sites you will find that there are plenty of opportunities to meet people of all ages and from many different backgrounds.

78.______

Making a new friend is only the first step. The key to a successful relationship over the Internet is to keep in touch with your friend. When the relationship works in this way, it is very rewarding for both partners. You can set the style and pace of th e exchange to suit each other. If you use “ instant messenger ” systems, your chat becomes a dialogue, which is a lot of fun and can help strengthen the growing friendship.

79.________

You will soon find that the topics go far beyond a discussion of football or music, even though these topics brought you both together. Another way to strengthen the friendship is to include your school friends in your conversations too, and then you can form your own “chat” group that meets regularly and becomes a small community of friends.

80._______

It is like belonging to a club. Your club can extend to many new and old friends, and their conversations will enrich your life in ways that you could have never imagined. If your Internet club grows then perhaps you will find ways to meet your new friends face to face, which will be another story.

With today’s college application fees averaging around $ 80, you can expect to spend hundreds of dollars on college before you are even accepted into a school. One of the easiest ways to save money on college application fees before you begin applying is to narrow down your list of schools. To save money, try to limit the schools to which you apply to about 2-3 reach schools and 2-3 safety schools. At some schools, being a relative of a graduate can secure you a free application. If you are applying to a school where one of your parents or grandparents is a former graduate, check to see if you’re qualified for it. Research the preferred method of applying for each school on your list. Some schools offer free online applications, yet charge a fee for paper submissions. This is because online applications save schools the cost of employing a staff member to physically enter the application information. Several states, such as Michigan and North Carolina, take part in College Application Week, where many schools in the participating states cancel their application fee for the week. Be sure to contact the schools to I j which you are applying to see if they participate in College Application Week and when the program takes place in that state. Apply for early admission. If you have already decided on which college is your top choice, consider applying under an Early Action or Early Decision admission program. If you are accepted, you won’t have to submit application fees to other schools. For more information regarding college applications and the fees associated with them, contact your high I school advisor or the admissions department at your school(s) of interest. 21.
