Task 1: What is the one style of clothing that the students in your school tend to wear? Why you like this style of clothing? Include speci?c reasons and details in your response.

S a m p l e

The student uniform from my school is sporty and these are the few things I

like about it. First, I think it’s pretty good looking. It’s blue with white stripes. It

makes you stand out from a crowed. And unlike the baggy uniforms from

other schools in the area, our uniform ?ts really well, because the material it’s

made of is very stretchy. Last but not least, it’s very comfortable. The uniform

is made of 100% cotton, so it’s nice and soft. On top of that, it breathes really

well so I can wear it during exercise.

Task 2: What kind of job will you choose? To choose a job through which you can get a lot of money or to choose a job through which you can get great personal satisfaction? Use speci?c reasons and examples to support your answer.

I would choose a job out of which I get great personal satisfaction rather than

money for the following reasons. First, we typically work from the age of 22

until retirement at around 60. We spend an average of ?ve days a week,

eight hours a day working. It makes a signi?cant part of one’s life. Obviously,

being forced to do something when you would rather be doing something

else can be killing. Also, Your passion should be what you do with your time.

Life is too short to pursue other people’s or employer’s goals. Pursue your

own, and rich or poor, happiness will follow.

Task 1: Talk about an after school activity you enjoy doing the most. Give speci?c reasons and details to support your response.

S a m p l e

The after school activity I enjoy participating in the most is taking photos for

the following reasons. First off, photography teaches me how to appreciate

life. I started paying more attention to my surrounding since I began taking

photos. I’ve learned you can ?nd beauty in the most unlikely places if you

slow down and take a closer look. For example, an ordinary street sign can

become a cute funny face if you shoot it from a certain angle. Also,

photography brings me closer to nature. I used to be a bit of a shut-in. But

ever since I got interested in photography, I spend most of my weekends in

parks taking photos. I’ve even lost a few pounds thanks to the long walks I

took ?nding pretty things to shoot!

Task 2: Some people prefer to do every day tasks like doing the laundry or dishes by hand, others prefer to use machines to do these tasks. Which one do you prefer? Give details and examples in your response.

S a m p l e

I prefer to let machines take care of things like doing the dishes or laundry

for the following reasons. First, machine can be such a time-saver. Think

about it, it takes us about 20 minutes doing dishes everyday, that’s almost

two hours a week, eight hours a month! Wouldn’t it be nice to just let the

machines do it for us so we can use that time to read a decent book or enjoy

some of our favorite music? Also, machines do a better job at these tasks

because they don’t procrastinate or cheat. There were times when I got too

lazy, I’d just leave the dishes in the sink overnight. The stains and leftovers

would dry up and become impossibly tough to scrub off the next morning.

Task 1: Some schools require students to ?nish a reading list during school breaks. Talk about the advantages and disadvantages of this requirement.

S a m p l e

I think it’s a great idea for students to ?nish a reading list during school

breaks. If students don’t have such reading lists to go through, they might

waste their time on meaningless activities like playing computer games or

watching TV shows. However, there are certain disadvantages to this policy

too. Many students like to travel, work or do volunteer works during school

breaks. For those students, they won’t be able to do what they love if they

have to sit in their room reading all day, while they can learn and accomplish

so much more doing the things they are truly passionate for.

Task 2: Some people prefer doing outdoor activities during summer, others prefer to do outdoor activities during winter. Which do you prefer?

S a m p l e

I prefer to do outdoor activities during summer. First, I have so much more

choices during summer. I can jog in the forest, swim in a lake or even hike in

the mountains. There are so much you can do during summer to enjoy the

nature. But our choices of winter activities are pretty much limited to skiing

and snowboarding. Also, people don’t get injured that easily doing outdoor

activities during summer because the weather’s nice. We don’t have to do

too much warm-up exercise to get ready. But our body can get pretty stiff

during winter due to the low temperature.

Task 1: Which of the following activities do you think bene?ts young people the most? Doing team sports, talking to seniors of the community, or traveling.

S a m p l e

I think people should travel while they are young. First, traveling connects us

with people. One of my favorite things about visiting a new place is learning

about the ways that people who live there are different than me. Traveling

makes me feel part of a larger whole, which means I am never alone. Also,

we get to ?nd out more about other cultures while traveling. We can look at

different landscapes, try new foods, experience other customs and maybe

even learn to speak another language.

Task 2: Some people prefer to live in residence with strict rules, others prefer to live in residence without strict rules. Which do you prefer and why?

S a m p l e

I prefer to live in residence without strict rules for the following reasons. First,

I don’t like rules. I don’t get along with authorities. I believe as students we

have the right to choose our life style. It’s only when we can be our true

selves, we can start to take responsibilities for our actions. Rules don’t

change human nature, students will stay up late no matter the electricity is

cut off or not. Also, I can deal with people having a good time or being a little

loud in dorms. When it gets too noisy for me, I’ll just go to the library to get

my work done. But when I’m done working, I’d rather be able to live in a

dorm with less rules where I can blow off some steam when I need to.

Task 1: Which of the following do you think bene?t students more? Going to ?eld trips, tutoring or doing class presentations.

S a m p l e

I think students bene?t from going to ?eld trips the most for the following

reasons. First, students can learn from a different environment. When we go

on ?eld trips, we can observe live animals in a zoo; touch and feel rocks in a

cave; see real documents from the past in a museum. Learning in the ?eld is

so much better than reading textbooks. On the other hand, it’s boring to sit in

a stuffy classroom, listen to the teacher going on and on for hours. Students

will try to focus, but they will be distracted sooner or later.

Task 2: Some students prefer to make going to gyms a priority, other student prefer to go to gyms whenever they are free. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

S a m p l e

I think it’s more important to go to the gyms on a regular bases for the

following reasons. First, only when we go to the gyms on a regular bases we

can keep a routine and keep ourselves motivated. I know lots of people who

buy a gym membership but only go once in a while. Over time, they lose

motivation and stop going. It’s such a waste of money and time. Also, we

have to workout regularly in order to see results. We need to set realistic

goals that include clear milestones. Over time, exercising becomes a habit

instead of a burden.

Task 1: Which of the following brings you more pleasure? Spend time with friends, study by yourself or doing sports? Explain why in details.

S a m p l e

I like doing sports. First, doing sports is good for me. I feel good about

myself after I exercise. I have more energy, I have better concentration, and I

know doing so is good for my health. Doing sports is bene?cial for both my

body and mind. Second, doing sports is great way to meet people. It’s so

easy to break the ice during a game. During a game, people challenge, work

with, compete and learn from other players in the ?eld. People will keep

talking to others during breaks even after games.

Task 2 : Some students prefer to have an early class schedule with classes in the morning, others prefer to have a late class schedule so they can go to classes in the afternoon. Which one do you prefer? Explain why.

I prefer to have an early class schedule for the following reasons. First, I

don’t mind getting up early in the morning because I’m a morning person. I

really like it when I start my day early ‘cuz by the time I ?nish all my classes,

it’d only be around noon, I would still have plenty of time to do my things

before dinner. This means I can hang out with friends in the evening without

getting behind schoolworks. On the other hand, having a late schedule

means I’ll probably sleep in. It’ll be sun down already by the time I ?nish

classes. I won’t have much time to do anything else after I ?nish my

assignments.

Task 1: If friends from another country were going to spend time in your country, what suggestions would you like to give them? Using details and examples, explain why.

If friends from another country were going to spend time in my country, I

would like to give them the following suggestions. First, visit as many

historical sites as possible. Take Beijing as an example. Although the city is

very modernized nowadays, the uniqueness and soul of it lies within its

historical sites like the Forbidden City, Great Walls and Summer Palace.

Spending sometime in places like these will open their mind, and give them

a better understanding of the country and our people. Also, talk to local

people as much as possible. We can tell them things like where to try the

most authentic local food and ?nd great price on gifts.

Task 2 : Some people prefer to write many short assignments for a semester, other prefer to write one or two long assignments for a semester. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

I prefer to write one or two long assignments for a semester for the following

reasons. First, this means I’ll have more time to work on it. That’ll give me a

chance to do plenty of research. It takes quite a long time to go through

reference books and academic journals in a library for the perfect

information sometimes. In addition, I’ll have more time to polish my work after

the ?rst draft. Comments can be obtained through peer reviews. That’s going

to help me make improvements thus ensuring me a good grade.

Task 1: Which of the following would you rather be? Lawyer, vet or restaurant owner. Explain your answer in details.

I would rather be a vet for the following reasons. First, I love animals! It

makes me feel good about myself knowing I can take care of them. Animals

don’t know how to speak like humans do when they’re in pain. Professional

training is essential for giving animals the right treatment. Also, so many

people have pets these days. And they’re willing to go to extraordinary

lengths to ensure the well being of their best friends. Therefore the demand

for veterinarian is enormous. And the salary isn’t bad at all from what I’ve

heard!

Task 2 : Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? It’s impolite to make calls or send text messages at a dinner table. Explain in details.

I think it’s not cool to use cellphones at dinner tables. if you’re having dinner

with friends and family, be with them. The family meal is a social event, not a

food ingestion event. Even if the phone is in your lap, people with you all

know what you’re doing when your eyes are focused on your lap. Everyone’s

attention is on the fact that your attention is on your phone, not on them. Also,

people nowadays are always connected, we rarely get a chance to have a

face to face conversation with friends and families. Dinner tables are the

ideal place for us to talk with our loved ones.

Task 1: Talk about a thing you always wanted to do but didn’t have time to yet. Explain why you want to do it, give examples and details in your explanation.

I’ve always wanted to travel more if I’ve the time to do so. First, travel ing

First, we get to do so many different activities during different seasons. Take

Beijing for example. The temperature and climates changes from season to

season pretty dramatically here. That means I can ?y a kite in spring, swim in

an out door pool and enjoy the sun in summer, take beautiful pictures of the

turning leafs during autumn and ski with friends when snow builds up in the

mountains in winter. Also, when the temperature ?uctuates, our life style

changes with it, our body adapts too. I believe this is good for our immune

system.

I think having discussions is the best way of learning for the following

reasons. First, students can exchange ideas when involved in discussions.

We can get new ideas and perspectives from each other. It’s interesting to

see there are so many different ways or approaches toward a single

problem. It’s mind blowing to see how differently people work. Also, it’s fun to

have discussions with others. We can challenge each other and have

debates. When studying by myself, my mind is usually very limited and I get

bored easily.

Task 2 : Some people prefer to sit in the front of a classroom during a lecture, others prefer to sit in the back during a lecture. Which do to think is better? Explain your response in details and examples.

I prefer to sit in the front of the classroom during lectures for the following

reasons. First, I’m closer to the professor. From experience, I can safely say

that when I’m sitting closer to the teacher, I have better concentration. It’s

easier to keep myself focused. Students who sit in the front get more chance

to interact with the teacher. When there’s something I’m not sure of, I’ll just

raise my hand and the professor can see me very easily and address my

questions. Also, sitting in the front helps me to see the whiteboard or slides

better. This means I don’t have to squint my eyes when taking notes which

gives me headaches.

I prefer to take Photography course out of the three for the following reasons.

First, taking photos is fun! Photography gives us a chance to see the world

around us differently. It trains our eyes to spot things that are interesting out

of the ordinary. Second, Every second that you live is a second more in the

past. Every picture that is taken captures those split seconds and stores

them timelessly. Pictures are a chart of memories and moments that can be

revisited as they were when the image is viewed.

An important experience I’ve recently had with someone was preparing for a

class presentation with my parents. I was asked to do a ?fteen minute

presentation about my family in my English class. To start the project, I spent

some time talking with my parents. I learned quite a lot about my family

history from them. Next, my dad worked with me to get the slides right. He’s

an expert because he gives lots of presentations at work. At the end, I

rehearsed my presentation with them for a few times and got many useful

tips on how I could improve. Thanks to their help, I got a pretty good grade

for this assignment.

Task 2 : Some people prefer to plan what to do in their free time ahead of time, others prefer to not having such plans. Which do you prefer? Explain why.

I prefer to have plans for my free time for the following reasons. First, I can

utilize my time to get as much done as possible. For example, on Friday

night, I would make a short list of the things that needed to be done on the

weekend. Such as cleaning the apartment, going grocery shopping, taking a

walk down the beach, reading for a few hour and spending sometime with

the families. If such list doesn’t exist, I could easily lose track of time and

forget to do a thing or two. Doing so not only makes my life more organized,

it also gives me a sense of achievement seeing just how much I can do

within a short period of time.

Task 1: Talk about the one thing government can do to improve the educational system in your country. Give details and examples in your answer.

The one thing government can, and should do to improve the education

system in China is providing more funding for schools. If such fundings were

in place, school can use the money to do the following. First, the money can

be spent toward hiring the right staff. For example, hiring more professors for

the faculties, get more campus staff to provide students with good service.

Also, the money can be used to update facilities on campus, such as buying

books for the library, upgrading equipment in labs and funding more

research projects on campus.

Task 2 : Some people prefer to own cars, others prefer to mainly use public transportation. Which do you agree with? Explain why.

S a m p l e

I prefer to use public transportation rather than owning a car for the following

reasons. First, public transit is pretty cheap in China, especially in Beijing. A

bus ticket only costs about the equivalence of six and half US cents. A

subway ticket costs around 30 cents. And for one fair, you can ride as many

stations as you want. On the other hand, if I own a car, I have to pay for

insurance, gas and maintenance every month as long as I own it which is

expensive. Also, using public transportation is good for the environment. If

everyone rides the bus and subway to work, there will be fewer cars sitting in

the street during rush hour, doing nothing but producing emission while

idling.
