A

If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same

time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

21. The opening paragraph is mainly intended to________.

A. attract the readers’ interest in the subject

B. provide some key facts about Confucius

C. show great respect for the ancient thinker

D. prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations

22. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students________.

A. take an active part in Chinese competitions

B. have a great interest in studying Chinese

C. try to get high scores in Chinese exams

D. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

23. What is the best title for the passage?

A. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language

B. Chinese Culture for Westerners

C. Old Thinker with a Big Future

D. Forgotten Wisdom in America

B

Eating too much fatty food, exercising too little and smoking can raise your future risk of heart disease. But there is another factor that can cause your heart problems more immediately:the air you breathe.

Previous studies have linked high exposure (暴露)to environmental pollution to an increased risk of heart problem, but two analyses now show that poor air quality can lead to heart attack or stroke (中风)within as little as a few hours after exposure. In one review of the research, scientists found that people exposed to high levels of pollutants (污染物)were up to 5% more likely to suffer a heart attack within days of exposure than those with lower exposure.

A separate study of stroke patients showed that even air that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)considers to be of “moderate” (良好)quality and relatively safe for our health can raise the risk of stroke as much as 34% within 12 to 14 hours of exposure.

The authors of both studies stress that these risks are relatively (相对地) small for healthy people and certainly modest compared with other risk factors such as smoking and high blood pressure. However, it is important to be aware of these dangers because everyone is exposed to air pollution regardless of lifestyle choices. So stricter regulation by the EPA of pollutants may not only improve environmental air quality but could also become necessary to protect public health.

24. The text mainly discusses the relationship between_________

A. heart problems and exercising

B. heart problems and air quality

C. heart problems and smoking

D. heart problems and fatty food

25. The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 3 most probably means________.

A. extremely low

B. relatively low

C. relatively high

D. extremely high

26. What can we learn from the text?

A. Eating fatty food has immediate effects on your heart.

B. The EPA conducted many studies on air quality.

C. Stricter regulations on pollutants should be made.

D. Moderate air quality is more harmful than smoking,

27. The author’s purpose of writing the text is most likely to ________

A. persuade

B. inform

C. describe

D. entertain

C

There is no better way to enjoy Scottish traditions than going fishing and tasting a little bit of whisky(威士忌)at a quiet place like the Inverlochy Castle. When Queen Victoria visited the castle in 1873 she wrote in her diary, “I never saw a lovelier spot ,” And she didn’t even go fishing.

Scotland is not easily defined (下定义). In certain moments, this quiet land of lakes and grasses and mountains changes before your very eyes. When evening gently sweeps the hillside into orange light ,the rivers, teeming with fish, can turn into streams of gold . As you settle down with just a fishing pole and a basket on the bank of River Orchy, near the Inverlochy castle , any frustration(烦恼)will float away as gently as the circling water. It’s just you and purple, pink ,white flowers, seeking a perfect harmony . If you are a new comer to fishing, learning the basics fr om a fishing guide may leave you with a lifetime’s fun. For many, fishing is more than a sport; it is an art.

Scotland offers interesting place where you can rest after a long day’s fishing. Set aga inst a wild mountain and hidden behind woodland , the beautiful Inverlochy Castle Hotel below the Nevis is a perfect place to see the beauty of Scotland’s mountains . Ben Nevis is the highest of all British mountains , and reaching its 1342-metre top is a challenge . But it’s not just what goes up that matters; what comes down is unique. More than 900 metres high, on the mountain’s north face, lies an all-important source of pure water. Its name comes form the Gaelic language “usquebaugh”or “water of life”; And it is the single most important ingredient(原料)in Scotland’s best know n drink:whisky.

A. The water from the mountain.

B. The beauty of its surroundings.

C. The Inverlochy Castle Hotel.

D. To describe the pleasures of life in Scotland

To take the apple as a forbidden fruit is the most unlikely story the Christians(基督教徒)have ever made up. For them, the forbidden fruit from Eden (伊甸园)is evil(邪恶的).So when Columbus brought the tomato back from South America, a land mistakenly considered to be Eden, everyone jumped to the obvious conclusion . Wrongly taken as the apple of Eden, the tomato was shut out of the door of Europeans.

What made it particularly terrifying was its similarity to the mandrake, a plant that was thought to have come from Hell (地狱).What earned the plant its awful reputation was its roots which looked like a dried-up human body occupied by evil spirits. Though the tomato and the mandrake were quite different except that both had bright red or yellow fruit, the general population considered them one and the same, too terrible to touch.

Cautious Europeans long ignored the tomato, and until the early 1700s most of the Western people continued to drag their feet. In the 1880s, the daughter of a well-known plant expert wrote that the most interesting part of an afternoon tea at her father’s house had been the “introduction th is wonderful new fruit--or is it a vegetable?” As late as the twentieth century some writers still classed tomatoes with mandrakes as an “evil fruit”.

But in the end tomatoes carried the day. The hero of the tomato was an American named Robert Johnson, and when he was publicly going to eat the tomato in 1820,people journeyed for hundreds of miles to watch him drop dead.” What are you afraid of?” he shouted. ”I’ll show you fools these things are good to eat!” Then he bit into the tomato. Some people

fainted. But he survived and, according to a local story, set up a tomato-canning factory.

32. The tomato was shut out of the door of early Europeans mainly because ______.

A. it made Christians evil

B. it came from a forbidden land

C. it was religiously unacceptable

D. it was the apple of Eden

33. What can we infer from the underlined part in Paragraph 3 ?

A. The process of ignoring the tomato slowed down .

B. There was little progress in the study of the tomato .

C. Most western people continued to get rid of the tomato .

D. The tomato was still refused in most western countries .

34. What is the main reason for Robert Johnson to eat the tomato Publicly ?

A. To persuade people to buy products from his factory .

B. To make himself a hero.

C. To speed up the popularity of the tomato .

D. To remove people’s fear of the tomato.

35. What is the main purpose of the passage ?

A. To challenge people’s fixed concepts of the tomato.

B. To present the change of people’s attitudes to the tomato.

C. To give an explanation to people’s dislike of the tomato.

D. To show the process of freeing the tomato from religious influence .

Juliet spilled water on her friend’s borrowed dress . T asha dropped her mom’s favorite plate, and then responded by yelling at her mom because she was so upset at her mistake. We all mess up . We’re human beings. 36 Sometimes we hurt people’s feelings without intending to . Sometimes, we’re d eliberately mean and we feel bad afterward. So we apologize.

An apology tells someone that we’re sorry for the hurt we caused—even if we didn’t do it on purpose . It’s a way of saying we’re aware of what we did and we’ll try to do better in future . 37 When we say “ I’m sorry ”, it’s because we probably feel bad about something you did or said .

Saying you’re sorry is more than just words . You’re also saying that you respect the other person and you care about his or her feelings . 38 The other person probably will , too . When you apologize in a caring way , you can feel good because you are trying to make things right again .

Everyone needs to apologize (even adults ) when they do something wrong . 39 This is how kids learn to apologize when they need to .

Sometimes a heartfelt “ I’m sorry ” fixes everything right away . Other times , it might take a while for someone to get past the upset feeling . 40 Even after you say you’re sorry , you might still feel bad about what you said or did but you can feel good about apologizing , fixing the mistake , or making up your mind to do better .

A. There are many ways to apologize .

B. After apologizing , you might feel a little better.

C. You may need to give the other person some time .

D. It’s n ot always easy to get along with everyone all the time .

E. It’s polite to accept and acknowledge an apology , but anything more is up to you !

F . Apologizing is one of the tools we use to build good friendships and relationships .

G. By doing the right t hing and saying “ I’m sorry ” , parents and other adults set an example .

山东省蒙阴县第一中学2017-2018学年高二3月月 考语文试题 学校_________ 班级__________ 姓名__________ 学号__________ 一、现代文阅读 1.

Ages 8 to 10. Woolly Monkeys spend most of their time high up in 150-foot-tall trees. That makes them difficult animals to count and to study. But cameras have provided valuable information and taken, as this book shows, amazing pictures. Experts now believe that Peru’s lowland monkeys and the waste they produce are necessary to the survival of the rain forest. Camp Panda: Helping Cubs Return to the Wild By Catherine Thimmesh. Ages 10 to 12. The giant panda is much-beloved in China, but in the past 40 years, at least half of its places has been destroyed. Camp Panda tells about efforts to reintroduce the giant pandas into the wild so that they might have a future. As part of the efforts, people wear panda costumes (服装) that smell like pandas while weighing and measuring the young pandas.
