Having fun with art on Fridays

——Keeley Oak, an eighth-grader, paints at Art

Night. 美国学校打造星期五艺术之夜。

Friday night is a good time to have fun as the

week comes to an end. But Tri-City United School

in Minnesota, US, took this to a new level. The

school turned Friday into Art Night.

Art Night ran from 5 to 10 pm every Friday. It

allowed students to get creative with paint, clay

(陶土) and temporary tattoos (暂时性纹身). The members of the high school ARTeam came up with the idea.

Thirty-six students registered (报名) for this activity. They were divided into three groups for 75-minute sessions (授课时间) of painting, pottery (陶器) making and henna (指甲花) design, with a pizza break in between. At the end of the night, students could take their work home.

Out of the three sessions, henna was the most popular. It’s the art of making beautiful tattoo patterns and has been practiced for more than 5,000 years in Southeast Asia. And it has recently become more popular in the US.

The art teacher Aimee Fisher traveled to India last year and learned henna. Then, she taught students how to do it at Art Night. “I’m really excited to do henna,” student Sarah Colwell told Le Center Leader, a local newspaper. “I’ve gotten it done on me, but I have never done it by myself.”

Fun holiday for a very long number

——数学迷们,千万别错过圆周率日哦!

On March 14, math and science lovers around the

world celebrated a special day: Pi Day.

Pi is equal to about 3.14, but the number goes on

endlessly. It is sometimes written in Greek, π. With the

help of computers, mathematicians have been able to

calculate pi out to over a trillion (万亿) decimal (小数的) places, but there is still no end to the number. This makes pi puzzling, even for the most famous scientists and mathematicians.

Pi Day is celebrated around the world on March 14, since how we write this date, 3/14, looks just like the number pi.

For some people, the appeal of Pi Day goes far beyond math and science. Pi shows up throughout popular culture. You can see it in movies, comics, music and more. “In modern movies, any time the filmmaker wants to evoke (产生) a sense of mystery, often the symbol pi is used,” says David Blatner, Jewish American writer of The Joy of Pi.

People also love trying to memorize the digits (数字) of pi and competing against others to see who can remember the most. Many teachers hold class contests to see how many numbers their students can memorize. The Guinness World Record for reciting the most digits of pi is held by LüChao of China, who successfully recited pi out to nearly 67,890 decimal places.

Above all, Pi Day is about having fun with the number. People celebrate Pi Day by eating or throwing pie and with fun pi-related games and activities. This year, Princeton, New Jersey, held a birthday party for Albert Einstein whose birthday also falls on March 14. There was also a “Walk a Pi Event” where people walked 3.14 miles together. Just like the number itself, the possibilities for Pi Day are truly endless.

Make the world beautiful

A few years ago, my husband and I were on an

island for a long weekend with our 3- and 4-year-old

daughters. As we went back and forth about what to

do next, our girls jumped in and told us exactly what

they wanted to do. “We want to go to the butterfly

museum,” said Ariela and Eliana.

As soon as we walked into the main area of the museum, we saw thousands of beautiful butterflies. They all flapped their colorful wings.

My girls were jumping up and down, and I knew we had made the right decision to come to the museum. They were having so much fun.

I turned to our museum tour guide because I was curious, and asked: “How long do butterflies live?”

She said: “About ten days.”

“What can butterflies do in ten days?” I asked.

The guide stopped, looked at me, and said: “They make the world a more beautiful place.”

“Wow,” I said, “I never thought about butterflies like that. Thank you.”

After we said goodbye, I couldn’t stop thinking about what the guide had said. She was right. We all have something to offer the world with the time we have. When we focus our gifts on taking care of each other every day, we can make a difference.

Appreciate the impact you can have on your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Like a butterfly, you have your own way of making the world a little better for everyone. 21ST

Happiest place in the world

——The statue of the little mermaid is a famous

landmark in Denmark. “童话王国”丹麦被评为世界

上最幸福的国家。

What is your impression (印象) of

Denmark? Many of you may know it as a

country of fairy tales (童话) because it is the

home place of Heinz Christian Andersen. But

now Denmark has a new title: the happiest

country in the world, according to the 2016

World Happiness Report.

The report chose countries considering the

following six factors (因素): GDP per capita

(人均生产总值), healthy life expectancy (平均寿命), low government corruption (腐败), a sense of social support, freedom to make life choices and a culture of generosity (慷慨).

Denmark is neither the richest nor the biggest country. So why do the 5.7 million people of Denmark smile so much?

“We have no worries. And if we do worry, it’s about the weather. Will it rain today, remain grey or get cold?” Knud Christensen, a 39-year-old social worker from Copenhagen, explained to the Independent.

Denmark has a series of policies (政策) that benefit its people. For example, the country supports parents if they want to be with their children, especially newborn babies. Danish families receive a total of 52 weeks of parental leave (育婴假). While American women only have an

average of 10.3 weeks.

Besides, women in Denmark don’t need to worry about whether they are treated unfairly by their male colleagues (男同事). In Denmark, gender equality (性别平等) is the priority (优先). In 1915, the country gave women the right to vote (选举). You also see women in the political world. The country now has its first female prime minister (总理), Helle Thorning-Schmidt.

The Nordic country is also famous for its biking culture. In Denmark’s cap ital, Copenhagen, bikes are used for about 50 percent of its people’s trips to school or work. Biking is not only good for reducing environment pollution, but it’s also good for people’s health. Just 30 minutes of biking a day adds an average of one to two years to a person’s life expectancy, The Huffington Post reported.

Fun facts about Denmark

Hello, Santa Claus

Every July, Santa Clauses from around the world go to Copenhagen to celebrate the World Santa Claus Congress. The celebration includes parades (游行), swimming competitions and other activities. Santas also talk about funny things like how to make chimneys bigger, so that it is easier for a Santa to get through.

A tasty treat

The Danish pastry (丹麦酥), or simply a Danish, is a traditional snack in Denmark. Now, the food is world famous. It is a sweet-flavored snack with many layers (层). Some are topped with chocolate, sugar or nuts. Some may be stuffed (充满) with fillings like jam or cream. Danish pastries come in different shapes including circles with fillings in the middle.

The famous bird

In 1984, Danes voted for their national bird. And a species of white swans (天鹅) called the mute swan got the most votes. Danish people love white swans, which became famous in the story The Ugly Duckling (《丑小鸭》) written by Hans Christian Andersen.

Did you know?

Have you heard of the word “hygge”? In English, the word can be translated to coziness (舒适). But hygge is more than that: having a tasty meal with families, chatting with friends under the sunshine on the weekends, enjoying classical music or having a movie night. All these things can be called hygge, which is the lifestyle of Danish people.

1. The report chose the happiest country according to the following factors EXCEPT _____.

A. their people’s looks

B. GDP per capita

C. their people’s life expectancy

D. a culture of generosity

2. What does the weather example want to show?

A. Danish people don’t like rain.

A major tip for eating at US restaurants

——US people have a custom to tip servers. 美国人的小费文化从

何而来?

If you ever go to the US and eat at a re staurant, there’s a very

important difference you should know about. US people have a

custom to give money to waiters and waitresses as a tip for their

work.

But why is this? Shouldn’t waiters get paid enough by their

bosses? Well, many waiters and waitresses get paid below the US

minimum wage (最低工资) and work for tips to make up for that.

According to the American travel website Trip Advisor, some

states pay their servers (服务员) only $2.13 (about 14 yuan) per

hour.

While no one makes you tip, if you are at a sit-down restaurant, it is usually expected that you tip your waiter 15 to 20 percent of what your bill is.

It’s not just for waiters either. Hotel maids, hairdressers and taxi drivers also usually work for tips. But it is much more expected to tip waiters.

The US hasn’t always had this tipping culture. In fact, people were mostly against it until the Prohibition Era (禁酒令时代) in the 1920s. The government said no one could sell alcohol (酒). Then, restaurants had trouble making enough money. So they started to ask people to tip their waiters.

This tipping culture has lasted through the years, but most people don’t like it. Some think restaurant bosses use it as an excuse to not pay their workers well. There isn’t much action being taken to make a change yet. So for now, be sure to tip your waiter when in the US.

Answer the following questions:

1. Are waiters and waitresses well paid in the US?

_________________________________________________________________________

2. How much does a customer usually tip his or her server?

_________________________________________________________________________

3. Who also works for tips in the US?

_________________________________________________________________________

4. What happened to restaurants when they could n’t sell alcohol?

_________________________________________________________________________

5. What do people think about this tipping culture?

Lasers may be the answer to a rainy day

——Lasers may help control rain. 激光或许可以控制天气

哦!

Lasers (激光) have many uses including improving

someone’s eyesight, playing DVDs, cutting diamonds (钻

石) and the list goes on and on. Now, there could be a new

use for this powerful tool – changing the weather!

The Swiss physicist Jean-Pierre Wolf is working on using laser beams (激光束) to change the weather for the better. He eventually wants to use it to help stop climate change. Sounds crazy, right? Well, there is already something kind of like it.

Cloud seeding (云催化) is a way people stop rain from falling. It uses rockets to release chemicals into the atmosphere (大气层), but it’s not known what this might do to the environment.

So Professor Wolf wants to find a better way to do this, and a laser is a good choice since the only thing it uses is light, not chemicals. But how would it work? According to CNN, it would make new clouds.

The laser would force condensation (冷凝) to happen, in other words creating drops of water. And then the water would turn into really small pieces of ice. Once this happens, clouds start to form just like it would naturally.

Professor Wolf’s hope is to help control the weather in places like California that can face both heavy floods (洪水) and droughts (干旱). They are also trying to use lasers to control lightning.

Using lasers to change the weather has been tested in a lab, and they have been fairly successful on a small scale. They are still trying to figure out how to use it in the real world, but it could be a new way to stop climate change.

“Every time you think you have done everything you can with lasers, something new comes up,” said Professor Wolf. “It’s quite amazing.”

1. Which of the following is the new use for lasers?

A. Improving people’s eyesight.

B. Playing DVDs.

C. Cutting diamonds.

D. Changing the weather.

2. From Paragraph 3, we learn that cloud seeding _____.

a. helps produce rain

b. uses rockets to work

c. releases chemicals into the air

d. makes the environment better

A. ab

B. bc

C. cd

D. ad

3. While using lasers to change the weather, _____.

A. some chemicals are also needed

B. new clouds would be made

C. condensation would not appear

D. there would be no water or ice

4. According to the last three paragraphs, _____.

A. lasers made the weather better in California

B. lasers have controlled lightning

C. using lasers for the weather has tested well

D. lasers can be used in every field

初中英语阅读理解练习题 A friend of mine was fond of drawing horse. He drew the horses very well, but he always began the tail. Now it is the Western rule to begin at the head of the horse, that is why I was surprised. It struck me that it could not really make any difference whether the artist begins at the head or the tail or the belly(肚子)or the foot of the horse, if he really knows his business. And most great artists who really know their business do not follow other people’s rule. They make their own rules. Every one of them does his work in a way peculiar(奇特的) to himself; and the peculiarity means only that he finds it more easy to work in that way. Now the very same thing is true to literature(文学). And the question, "How shall I begin?" only means that you want to begin at the head instead of beginning at the tail or somewhere else. That is, you are not yet experienced(有经验的) enough to trust to your own powers. When you become more experienced you will never ask the question, and I think that you will often begin at the tail --that is to say, you will write the end of the story before you have even thought of the beginning. 1. A friend of the writer’s drew the horses ____. A. very well B. in the way of western rule C. in the way of his own rule D. all of the above 2. The writer was surprised because ____. Passage 1 When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings. So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish. Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and West Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export. Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors. Education is very important to the Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (单独的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. The other three months of the year are harvest time and the children have to help their parents to pick coffee beans. 1. What’s the main idea of the first paragraph? A. How Columbus found Costa Rica. B. How Costa Rica got its name. C. What the Costa Ricans wore. D. What language the Costa Ricans spoke. 2. The Costa Ricans may NOT paint their houses ______. Many people on the island had a disease called beri?鄄beri. He was going there to try and find a cure. At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ (细菌) caused beri-beri. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate —refined white rice (精炼米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery —that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins (维生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food. Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills. 6. The underlined word “cure” in Paragragh 1 probably means ______. A. a medical treatment B. a kind of vitamin C. a kind of germ D. a kind of rice 7. Christian Eijkman went to the island of Java to ______. A. spend his holiday B. find ways to grow better crops C. do some research about the island D. h8lp the Javanese with their illness 8. 初中英语阅读理解专项练习

英语阅读理解专项练习 1.阅读理解 When throwing away rubbish, do you know which Bin it should go in? Have you ever noticed the differently-colored Bins on the street? Some of you might not be able to answer this question. However, it's actually quite important to know how to sort your waste. Not knowing how to sort waste can make it harder to save energy and protect the environment. If you don't sort your waste, all of it will go to a landfill and be buried(埋)together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of waste, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled. With this in mind, many cities in China have been running waste-sorting campaigns (活动)in recent years. For example, Shanghai announced in July that within three years, all of its residents(居民)should sort their waste into four groups wet, recyclable, harmful and dry. "Wet" waste is also known as household waste." They are things you don't want but that pigs can eat," Guangzhou Daily explained. Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste. Harmful waste includes things like medicine, batteries and fluorescent bulbs. Finally, any waste that's not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the" dry waste" bin. Many other Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, plan to use this method to sort their garbage. Now that you know this, perhaps you can do your part to protect the environment and encourage others to sort their waste. (1)The passage is most probably from a(an)__________.
