第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Suppose you’re in a rush, feeling tired, not paying attention to your screen, and you send an email that could get you in trouble.

Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You freeze in horror and burn with shame.

What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover.

Clicking “send” too soon

Don’t waste your time trying to find out if the receiver has read it yet. Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief title explaining that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored.

Writing the wrong time

The sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologising for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as people can be offende d, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of their culture(i.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names). Clicking “reply all” unintentionally

You accidentally reveal(透露)to the entire company what menu choices you would prefer at the staff Christ mas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In this instance, the best solution is to send a quick, light-hearted apology to explain your awkwardness. But it can quickly rise to something worse, when everyone starts hitting “reply all” to join in a lon g and unpleasant conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone to calm down. Sending an offensive message to its subject

The most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an unkind message about someon e, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person as soon as possible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly—see it as an opportunity to clear up any difficulties you may have with this person.

21. If you have written the wrong name in an email, it is best to ________.

A. apologise in a serious manner

B. tell the receiver to ignore the error

C. learn to write the name correctly

D. send a short notice to everyone

22. What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your “reply all” email?

A. Try offering other choices.

B. Avoid further involvement.

C. Meet other staff members.

D. Make a light-hearted apology.

23. How should you deal with the problem caused by an offensive email?

A. By promising not to offend the receiver again.

B. By seeking support from the receiver’s friends.

C. By asking the receiver to control his anger.

D. By talking to the receiver face to face.

B

I’m going through it right now.Last night one of our three family dogs was hit and killed by a car in front of my mother’s house. The dogs became, more or less, my mother’s surrogate children after her human children grew up and moved out and my father ran with a midlife crisis and left her. The one that was killed had bonded with my mother far more than the others. She is extremely shocked. I loved the dog,but my true sadness currently results from having to watch my mother bear another tragedy after everything she has been through in her life. In the midst of all of this, I have to sincerely applaud the driver of the vehicle, which feels wrong, but it’s not.

I’ll start by stating it was not his fault. The dog ran after a deer into the road at night. In an effort not to hit the deer with his car, he changed direction, not seeing the dog, resulting in its death. He could have very easily continued on his way, but he did something that I hope I never forget.

In my eyes, he did the right thing. The driver pulled over, carefully wrapped our dog in a blanket he got from his car to preserve its dignity, and carried it up to my mother’s front door.He was visibly shaking and very upset. He informed my mother of what happened and she broke down immediately. He comforted her the best a stranger could and waited with her while my sister rushed to her house. He left his information and offered assistance in any way he could.Yes, he is the man who hit and killed our dog accidentally. What he really did was spare my mother, and potentially my sister, from coming across a horrible scene themselves while searching for the dog. He had so many choices that were far easier to make than what he chose. He did the right thing and for that, thank you, Stranger. You restored my faith in humanity.

24.What do we know about the dog killed by the driver?

A.It was killed by the driver on purpose.

B.It lost its life during a fight against a deer.

C.It was a particular favorite of the author’s mother.

D.It got killed by hitting the deer while running after it.

25.What does the underlined part“feels wrong, but it’s not”in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.The driver ought to answer for the dog’s death.

B.The author thought it sensible to praise the driver.

C.The author believed it was not the driver’s fault to kill the dog.

D.The driver should not take responsibility for the dog’s death at a ll.

26.Which of the following can best describe the driver?

A.Self-condemned and considerate. B.Calm and far-sighted.

C.Reliable and generous.D.Irresponsible and unreasonable.27.What may the author agree with?

A.Still waters have deep bottoms.

B.Those who are ready to believe are easy to cheat.

C.When the wound is healed, the pain is forgotten.

D.Taking responsibility is the best policy.

Red pandas are native to the high forests of Asia. They are only a little bigger than a house cat and considered to be endangered. Scientists reported last month that not all red pandas belong to the same species. There are two different species of this animal, not just one, a study found. The scientists reported finding major differences in three genetic markers between Chinese red pandas and Himalayan red pandas. Scientists identified the markers after studying DNA from 65 of the creatures. DNA carries genetic information for the development, growth and reproduction of living things. Documenting the existence of two separate species could help guide efforts for protecting red pandas, scientists added.

Chinese red pandas live in northern Myanmar, as well as southeastern Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China. Himalayan red pandas are native to Nepal,India,Bhutan and southern Tibet in China, the researchers said.

Conservation biologists Yibo Hu and Fuwen Wei 1ed the study. “To conserve the genetic uniqueness of the two species, we should avoid their interbreeding(杂交繁殖)in captivity,”Hu said. “Interbreeding between species may harm the genetic adaptations already established for their local habitat environment.”

Scientists had earlier suggested there were two species of red panda. But the new study was the first to provide the genetic information necessary to permit such a judgment. International experts estimate a total population of around 10,000 red pandas in the wild. The two species differ in coloration and skull shape. The Himalayan red panda is the rarer of the two.Major dangers to red pandas include deforestation and habitat loss. While they have similar names, red pandas and giant pandas are not closely related. Giant pandas are one of the world’s eight bear species. Red pandas are sometimes called living fossils because they have no close living relatives. They are the only remaining member of their mammalian family.

28.What is the purpose of recording the existence of the two different species of red panda? A.To direct efforts for the protection of them.

B.To better distinguish red pandas and giant pandas.

C.To inform people there exist two species of red panda.

D.To confirm there are major differences between them.

29.In which place can we spot Himalayan red pandas?

A.Southeastern Tibet.B.Yunnan Province.

C.Southern Tibet.D.Northern Myanmar.

30.What can we know about the two species of red panda?

A.They belong to the same animal family as giant pandas.

B.Their existence has been known already.

C.They differ mainly in size and shape of skull.

D.To protect them,we should interbreed them.

31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

A.Lifestyle.B.Culture.C.Entertainment.D.Science.

European researchers say they have created a process that can produce oxygen from moon dust. The process could provide a major source of oxygen for humans taking part in moon exploration activities in the future.Researchers from the European Space Agency,or ESA,carried out the experiments at a laboratory in the Netherlands.

The team says ESA’s experimental“plant”was able to successfully produce oxygen from simulated(仿造的)moon dust. The dust is part of a material known as regolith(风化层),a top layer of dirt and rock pieces that sit on the surface of the moon.Samples of regolith returned from the moon have confirmed that the material contains about 45 percent oxygen by weight. However, the oxygen is chemically locked in the form of minerals or glass, so it is not easily available for use. Having real samples of regolith from the moon made it possible for the researchers to create the simulated moon dust material used during testing.

The oxygen extraction(提取)process is carried out using a method called molten salt electrolysis(熔盐电解). This includes first placing the regolith in a metal container. Calcium chloride salt is added to the mixture, which is then heated to 950 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the regolith remains solid. Next,an electrical current is passed through the material. The researchers say it is this step that results in oxygen being extracted from the regolith. The study reported that up to 96 percent of oxygen in the simulated moon dust was extracted during the experiments.

ESA’s long-term goal is to design an oxygen-producing “pilot plant” to operate full-time on the moon. The first technology demonstration of the system is expected to take place in the middle 2020s. Beth Lomax, a lead researcher on the project, said, “Being able to acquire oxygen from resources found on the moon would obviously be hugely useful for future lunar settlers, both for breathing and the local production of rocket fuel.” The researchers reported that “as a bonus” the process also results in the production of usable metallic materials.

ESA and the US space agency NASA are both working on plans to return human beings to the moon. NASA has set a goal for 2024 with the aim to keep humans on the moon for long

periods.

32.Why is oxygen from moon dust difficult to use?

A.It is tough for human beings to get moon dust.

B.It is chemically fixed in materials or glass.

C.The conditions of moon dust are terrible.

D.There exits only a little of it.

33.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?

A.What molten salt electrolysis is.

B.Where the value of the study lies.

C.How oxygen is extracted from moon dust.

D.What is necessary in the oxygen extraction process.

34.What is Beth Lomax’s attitude towards the possibility of getting oxygen from moon dust? A.Positive.B.Skeptical.

C.Cautious.D.Indifferent.

35.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Recent Studies of Moon Dust by Researchers

B.How Researchers Extracted Oxygen from Moon Dust

C.Potential Significance of Oxygen Extracted from Moon Dust

D.Researchers Report Extracting Oxygen from Moon Dust Successfully

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Work smarter, not harder.” When it comes to studying, there are some very specific ways you can improve your effectiveness without adding loads of extra work.

Create a game plan. Before you begin your study session, create a game plan for exactly how you will study. Consider what you will study, how long you’ll spend on each subject and what study methods you will use. 36 Take at least 10 minutes before your study session to map out your game plan.

Outline your notes. Taking the time to boil your notes down to a standard outline can help you grasp the overall concepts you’re studying. You certainly can borrow or copy someone else’s notes, but you must work hard to put everything in your own words. 37 Many times, understanding the big picture is just as important as remembering all the individual facts. Outlining allows you to file individual facts under larger ideas.

Maintain balance. Balance can be diffic ult to maintain in school but it’s crucial for success.

38 Seek to carry out a balanced life. Make sure to maintain a social life and develop hobbies outside of school. Stay in touch with your family and keep them informed of your school progress. It’s certainly a challenge, but living in balance will keep you on the path to success.

39 If you want to do well in school, you simply have to do it. But there are specific ways to study better. To make the most of your limited time. 40 By following the methods above, you can raise the quality of your studying sessions without necessarily increasing the quantity.

A. To keep from spinning your wheels.

B. There’s no way to get around studying.

C. Write out your notes by hand during class.

D. If you don’t, you’ll fail to understand the larger concept.

E. This allows you to study the right materials at the right time.

F. The last thing you want to do is bury yourself in a mountain of books.

G. Don’t spend all your time studying or all your time hanging with f riends.

Honesty is a vital quality of human behavior and always regarded as a virtue.Every time people refer to the topic, I would recall an unforgettable experience which had a deep impact on my growth.

I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas, a town 18 miles away and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time,I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.

I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see a movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that l forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch:6 pm.I was two hours late!

I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place,my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.

I would never forget the way he looked at me. “ I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jaso n.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn’t show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong. They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all.”

Paragraph 1:

A wave of guilt swept over me. I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late.Dad listened carefully as a sadness passed through him,“I'm angry, not with you but with myself. You see. I realize that I have

failed as a father if after all these years you feel that you have to lie to me. I have failed because I have brought up a son who cannot even tell the truth to his own father. Paragraph 2:

“I’m going to walk home now and think where I have gone wrong all these years”, father said to me. “But father, it's exactly eighteen miles home from here, and it's dark. You can't walk back. ”I begged. My protests, my apologies and the rest of my words were useless. I had let my father down and I was about to learn one of the most painful lessons of my life. Dad began walking along the dusty roads. I quickly jumped in the car and followed behind. I apologized all the way, telling him how sorry I was, but he simply ignored me. For 18 miles he kept walking. Seeing my father in so much pain was the most awful experience that I have ever faced. However it was also the most successful lesson.

Listening Test 1

Text 1

W: How about seeing the new film at the theater tomorrow?

M: Sorry. I have a GRE class every Friday, and the next day I always have to look over my notes at home.

Text 2

M: Hey, Katherine. Do you know any special ways to listen to lectures better?

W: Well, I like to take notes. But if the topic is difficult, I often record the whole thing. That way, I can listen to the lecture all over again and take really good notes.

Text 3

W: Hi, Thomas. This is Katie. I found your notebook in the library. Please come to get it back in the classroom. Or I just leave it in the teachers’ office in Room 201, if you don’t have time now.

M: Oh. That’s great, Katie! I have been looking for it a ll day long. I’ll go to get it tomorrow morning.

Text 4

M: I find there are plenty of classical music CDs on the Internet. You can buy them very cheaply if you like them.

W: Great. I know you very often listen to them. You can try some rock music, which can make you energetic and powerful. And jazz music also makes people feel relaxed.

M: Mm… I sometimes listen to them.

Text 5

M: You really have a lot of hobbies, Sarah. How do you find time to keep up with all of them? W: That’s the nice thing about be ing retired. I have always had a desire to do more in the field of art, and now that I have time, I really enjoy taking art classes at the community college.

Text 6

M: ⑥I’m terribly sorry, Tina. I’ve broken your glasses. I was looking for the dictionary you borrowed from me yesterday on the desk while you were out for a break.

W: Well, it doesn’t matter. It’s my fault. I forgot to return it to you on time after I used it to look up some words in it. I should say sorry to you first.

M: I need it badly now, so I began to search for it on your desk. I should have been careful. I’ll pay for it.

W: No, there is no need to pay. ⑦You treat me an ice cream after class. That’s enough.

Text 7

W: Good morning. Harwich Hospital. How may I help you?

M: Hello, I made an appointment with Dr. Martin, but I have to make a change now.

W: Oh, who’s calling, please?

M: It’s Adam Welsh.

W: Ah yes, Mr. Welsh. ⑨Your appointment is at 11:00 am on Wednesday. Is there a problem?

M: ⑧Well, unfortunately I won’t be able to come tomorrow as I live out of town and I’ve been cut off by last night’s sudden snowstorm. ⑨Could I possibly have another appointment for the same time the day after tomorrow when the weather will hopefully be better?

W: Wait a moment, please. I’ll just check.⑨Yes, that’ll be fine.

M: Thank you very much.

W: You’re welcome. I’ll inform Dr. Martin of the change. Thank you for calling.

Text 8

M: Let’s plan a trip for the summer break.

W: All right. I heard there are some little villages with beautiful scenery and interesting shops. M: Oh no. We don’t have that much money to do some shopping.

W: You’re right. Anyway, I’d like to have a look. I just heard there are some really nice arts in the villages. (10)The best place to find a good variety of local artworks such as paintings and handmade jewelry is Richmond. The only trouble is that there aren’t any places to eat. Luckily, there are some great restaurants and cafés in Rosemount 15 minutes by bike away from it.

(11)And Sun Valley, which is a ten-minute walk from Richmond is also famous for its local foods.

M: Great! Are there any youth hotels around there?

W: Yes, there’s one in Richmond. (12)But what about sleeping in a tent?We haven’t done that for ages and we don’t have much money to stay in a hotel.

M: Sounds fun.

Text 9

W: Nice to meet you, Jack. I’m Mrs. Spence. Please take a seat.

M: Thank you, Mrs. Spence. Nice to meet you, too.

W: (13)So, you’ve applied to do a teaching course here.

M: (13)Yes, that’s right.

W: I’d like you to tell me, first of all, why you want to be a teacher.

M: OK. Well, I’ve always loved explaining things and helping people. (14)I’m not looking for an easy job—I like a challenge! I also want to work with young people.

M: In the age of mobile payments, what we really need to survive is a smartphone. But one company in the US is going to make your traditional wallets cool again, by bringing them into the digital age.

(17)Armenian f irm Volterman’s Smart Wallet takes security to a new level. It’s fitted with different technology. In a smart wallet, there is an alarm, a GPS tracker, and even a camera. (18)If your phone and wallet become separated, the alarm will warn you so that you do n’t leave it behind. And if your wallet is lost or stolen, the GPS tracker can help you reach it.

But perhaps the most unusual feature of the V olterman Smart Wallet is the built-in front-facing camera. “If someone dares to open your wallet without your pe rmission, the little camera will take a picture and send it to your mobile phone,” the founder said. (19)Once your wallet is stolen, you will find it easily by receiving the picture of the thief.

The V olterman is really the world’s most powerful smart wal let. (20)It’s also lightweight and thin, making it perfect for travel. No more international roaming charges(漫游费). Also, it works wirelessly. The high-tech wallet comes in three models, with the cheapest cost expected to be $169.
