One example is, once she watched a movie about a famous figure in American politics. There was one scene in the movie that the calendar was turned over one page after another, and suddenly the politician grew up from a child to a young man. So the scene is actually an application of bridge shifting the director used in order to depict the years in which the politician grew up.

Another example is in the same movie, the politician needs to travel to different cities to give speeches. In order to show the spectators that he is busy travelling, all directors will merely show a picture of a running

tree or different window views, so that viewers will not have any problems in comprehending the story. This is another application of bridge shifting that is to connect different places other than skipping certain time slots.

In the listening material, the professor gives one example to explain the term quoting out of context mentioned in the reading part. He is stressing that sometimes, in order to attract people’s interest, some advertisers may only quote part of the reviews from the critics.(like when you are in a movie store, you’ll read reviews like two thumbs up or the best comedy of the season.) His example is, once, before a movie was formally released, people had read news about it saying that it was delighted, thus lots of people went for the movie because of the remarks. However, the fact is the critic thought rather negatively about the movie, she only meant that the actress was delighted not the movie. This is the effect of quoting out of the context.
