Tips for Writing a Cover Letter

If you are applying for an internship (实习工作), you will likely have to submit a cover letter as part of your application. Read below for tips on writing an internship cover letter.

Use Business Letter Format

Use proper business letter format when sending a cover letter by mail. Include your contact information at the top, the date, and the contact information for the employer. Be sure to provide a proper salutation (称呼语), and sign your name at the bottom.

Individualize Your Cover Letter

Make sure to write a unique cover letter for each internship for which you apply. Highlight skills and abilities you have that relate to the specific internship listing. The main emphasis of your cover letter should be convincing the reader that you will be a qualified intern.

Emphasize Y our Academic Experience

In the letter, you can mention academic experience, if applicable. Especially if you have limited work experience, you might use examples from school to demonstrate that you have particular skills. For example, if the internship requires you to work as part of a team, provide an example of an assistant at the library or a successful team project you worked on during one of your college courses.

Include Extra Classroom Experiences

You can also include details about your relevant experience from extra classroom activities or volunteer work. For example, a reporter for a college newspaper can point to interviewing and writing skills; a history of volunteering at a shelter can provide an example of strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Proofread and Edit

Be sure to thoroughly proofread (校对) your cover letter for spelling and grammar errors. Many internships are very competitive, and any error can hurt your chances of getting an interview. Also, avoid using too many words to convey your information and intention.

My husband jokes with me that my midlife crisis was having my now 11-year-old daughter in my 40s.

I started my career as Associate Editor at Woman’s World magazine in the late 1990s. Then I was

a magazine editor-in-chief for five national consumer publications and also contributed to magazines like Longevity and New Woman.

Four years after getting married in 2005, I eventually gave birth to my daughter, Crystal. As I wrote on https://www.doczj.com/doc/ed417159.html,: “As the doctor checked her vital organs and my husband counted her 10 perfect fingers and toes, I realized that my body had produced a wonder.”

While my peers were dealing with the stresses of kids in school, I focused my creative energy on carving out my new identity. I was excited when I was offered a “Mom’s Talk” column where I wrote about toys, breastfeeding, and my ongoing quest (追求) for “baby-free” time.

When Crystal was 3 years old, I wrote an essay about watching her dance at a toddler (学步的小孩) reading group at the library, instead of sitting down with the other children. I expected her performance to annoy people, but her joyful dancing attracted them and made me consider my own possibilities.

“Had I ever been that way, I wondered. If so, could I be like that again? Could I become as free as a child with her whole life ahead of her, ready and willing to be the star of her own production?”

As my daughter transformed from a toddler into a young girl, she continued to be my inspiration.

I wrote about the new rules for babysitting and shared research showing that fathers who participated in housework had a positive impact on their daughter’s future success on The Washington Post.

I focused on providing Crystal with resilience-building (韧性) when she neared her teens. I wrote about powerful phrases for The Week, like “no one is the judge of your self-worth”.

As my daughter continues to grow during this messy time, there is one certainty: I will continue to tell my stories, through the eyes of my midlife wisdom. I can’t wait to see her next chapter—and for you to read mine.

24. How did the author feel when giving birth to her daughter?

A. Frightened.

B. Pleased.

C. Puzzled.

D. Disappointed.

25. In terms of being a parent, the author differed from her peers in that ________.

A. she had to deal with more stress from being a mom

B. she left all the babysitting work to her husband

C. she combined the new identity with her career

D. she adopted a creative method of raising her baby

26. What did Crystal’s performance in the library make the author think about?

A. Living the same free life as her daughter’s.

B. Giving performance in front of a crowd.

C. Her previous life before having the baby.

D. Pure pleasure during “baby-free” time.

27. Why does the author consider Crystal as her inspiration?

A. Crystal has inspired her to take a writing career.

B. She has started writing in the tone of Crystal.

C. Her writing keeps developing as Crystal grows.

D. Many of her stories are centred on her daughter.

Starman, the dummy (仿真人) riding a cherry-red Tesla Roadster (特斯拉敞篷车) through space, has made his closest approach ever to Mars. The electric roadster and its passenger were attached to the top of a Falcon Heavy rocket during the SpaceX rocket’s first test launch on 6 February 2018.

Two years later, the Falcon Heavy rocket and the vehicle at its tip are making their second trip around the Sun. Mr. McDowell, a Harvard astrophysicist, found that Starman passed 7.4 million kilometres from Mars at 06:25 GMT 7 October, 2020.

The closest recent approach between the Earth and Mars was 56 million kilometres in 2003, though the planets are often hundreds of millions of miles apart depending on where they are in their orbits. No one can see the Falcon Heavy rocket at its current distance, but orbits over periods of a few years are fairly straightforward to predict, and Mr. McDowell used data about how the rocket was moving when it left the Earth’s gravity behind to locate its recent movements exactly.

Last time Starman circled the Sun, McDowell said, it crossed Mars’ orbit while the Red Planet was quite far away. But this time the crossing lined up with a fairly close approach, though still not

close enough to feel a strong tug from Mars.

At this point in time, if you were able to go look at the Roadster, it would probably look pretty different. The strong solar radiation environment between the planets would probably have destroyed all the exposed organic materials.

Without the Earth’s atmospheric and magnetic (磁场的) protection, even the plastics and carbon-fibre materials would start to break up. Over the course of decades or centuries, the car will end up with its aluminium (铝) frame and hard glass parts—that’s assuming that none of them get destroyed in impacts with passing space rocks.

28. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?

A. Starman is now circling around the Earth in its orbit.

B. Starman has set out on its second trip around the Sun.

C. Starman has travelled 7.4 million kilometres after launch.

D. Starman still has a long way to go before getting to Mars.

29. How did McDowell manage to locate Starman?

A. By keeping Starman under visual observation.

B. By predicting its future orbit around the earth.

C. By seeking professional help from SpaceX.

D. By analyzing data about the rocket’s movement.

30. The underlined word “tug” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to __________.

A. pull

B. drive

C. resistance

D. pressure

31. What will happen to Starman in decades or centuries?

A. It is circling around Mars and will finally crash onto it.

B. It will finish its mission and return to SpaceX on earth.

C. Starman is likely reduced to at most its frame and glass.

D. SpaceX will try to recover it during its next space mission.

D

Social media is taking over our lives: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and now, TikTok. These social media platforms have transformed from a way to stay connected to an industry where even kids can make money off their posts. While this may seem like another opportunistic innovation, it’s really full of hidden false realities.

The median income (中位收入) recorded in the United States of America was about $63,000 in 2018. TikTokers can make anywhere from $50,000 to $150,000 for a TikTok brand partnership, and TikTokers with over a million followers can make up to $30,000 a month—$360,000 a year. They are

making more than the average person trying to feed their family and keep a roof over their heads, simply by posting a 15-second video.

This is mad in more ways than one. Not only is it an overpaid “job”, it promotes undeserved admiration from viewers and a false sense of reality. Many of these famous TikTokers are still teens, and the effects of fame at such an early stage in life might cause issues later in life, such as mental illness. Teens between the ages of 13 and 17 make up 27% of TikTok viewers, who can be easily influenced by what they are watching. They can put a false sense of self-value into who they look up to and what they represent: money, fame, being considered conventionally attractive.

While TikTok has become a great tool for marketing, it’s important to understand how this content affects young viewers. If we’re constantly consuming content that shows us all we need to do to be successful is be conventionally attractive and post a 15-second video featuring a new dance, it will challenge our knowledge of what really makes someone successful and will in turn affect our individual work ethics (伦理). What about the people who miss birthdays and family holidays due to their jobs and aren’t getting paid nearly as much as these TikTokers?

Richard Colyer, president and creator of Metaphor, Inc., had his own view on this issue. “It sounds great that kids can make money for doing the latest dance moves in a 15-second video, but we should feed the minds of kids and not just their bank accounts. TikTok can be great if used properly. Money alone is not good, technology alone is not good and connectedness can be bad if it’s only online.”

Again, as a fellow consumer of TikTok, I do enjoy the app when I have some time to kill and need a good laugh. I’m not against someone making a living on entertainment, but what does getting famous off of a 15-second video teach young people?

32. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?

A. Social networking.

B. Making money on social media.

C. A job offered by TikTok.

D. Staying connected to the Internet.

33. Which is the possible influence of TikTok on its young users?

A. They tend to live an adult life too soon.

B. They are forced to pay for certain services.

C. They may abandon other social media.

D. They are likely to develop false values.

34. What can we infer from Richard Colyer’s comments?

A. TikTok can be a positive influence if teens employ it wisely.

B. Young TikTokers should be banned from making money.

C. It is better to involve education on investment in TikTok videos.

D. Contents of videos need checking before their release online.

35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A. Say No to TikTok

B. Join Young TikTokers

C. TikTok—A Mine of Money

D. A Job vs An Entertainment

If you think you’re a pessimist and there’s no hope of ever turning it around, then think again! According to mental health experts, it is actually very possible to turn into a glass-half-full kind of person, and here’s what you can do to see things in a brighter light.

36 Writing down your ideas of an optimistic tomorrow will make a huge difference when it comes to your overall attitude to life. You may also want to consider a serious challenge you have in life right now, and simply sit back and think about all of the possible positive outcomes.

Choose to be optimistic. Life is all about choices. You can choose to spend the entire day reading or cleaning. You can make the call you’ve been thinking about for a while or you can put it off for another day. What’s more, you can also choose to be positive or you can choose to simply carry on living as you are. 37 And then carry on that way for the rest of your life.

Extend positiveness to others.Making others feel good about themselves can have lasting positive effects on your own life. Never forget to admire your family, friends, and colleagues for the good things which they are doing in their lives, even if they don’t directly affect you. 38 Recognize your negative thought patterns. It’s fine to acknowledge that bad things in life might happen at any time. 39 Yet being overly negative can seriously ruin your chances of finding happiness in this life. Reframing your awkwardly negative thoughts into more realistic patterns may be the key to helping you maintain optimism.

Practice gratitude. Spend some time thinking about all of the things you have to be thankful for. 40 You could even choose to keep diaries, where you can put down anything which makes you smile. If nothing else, take a moment every once in a while to stop, smile and be thankful for the positive things in life.

A. Imagine a positive future.

B. Form the habit of keeping diaries.

C. Of course, it’s also necessary to praise yourself.

D. Ignoring reality isn’t the most helpful method either.

E. Being optimistic starts with the decision to be positive.

F. It will often provide you with an instant optimism boost.

G. Take a moment to work out how realistic your thoughts really are.

It had been a few months since our beloved boxer Bama had passed away. He’d lived a good, long life. Alan and I didn’t have children. Our boxer was our baby. After Bama’s death, we couldn’t bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep, so we put them all in the basement. I told myself I’d do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn’t.

Now I sat in my yard and wept. Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I dismissed the idea. We couldn’t go through that kind of heartbreak again.

I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. I wiped the tears from my eyes, heart beating wildly. Was he real or just my wishful imagination? I took a second look. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He ran across the street, straight toward me. I offered my hand. He sniffed it eagerly, bushy tail wagging. He licked me.

This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. He was well-fed and clean. He wore a collar but had no ID. I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen another boxer around.

The dog lay down beside my feet, his tongue lolling in a doggie smile. He didn’t seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit.

“Alan!” I called. “You have to come see this!”

Alan joined me, and we sat together silently for a moment. Then the boxer got up and walked off. In the following days, he’d sometimes appear in the backyard when Alan and I were outside. Other times, he’d wait for us on the front porch.

With each visit, I could feel the ache in my heart lessen. Seeing him was helping me work through my deep sorrow.

At work one day, a young man and an older woman I’d never seen before came in. I took down the man’s address to complete some paperwork and noticed he lived up the street from me.

His name was Tanner. The woman with him was his grandmother. He and his family had recently moved from Georgia.

Be Sporty, Be Healthy

Hello, everyone!

I feel honored to be here to talk to you on exercise. We students are heavily burdened with school work, and thus spare little time for regular physical exercise.

However, we all need a sound body. So I suggest we fit exercise into our busy schedule, making it part of our daily routine. Put down our books to stretch our arms from time to time. Do some jogging and jumping every day. If we are able to make exercising our life habit, we will surely benefit from it both physically and mentally.

That’s all. Thank you. (80W)

“Do you happen to have a dog?” I asked. “We do,” he said. “Is he a boxer?” “Yes, my dog Axle is a boxer.” “I have met him on a lot of occasions. He has actually been paying me regular visits.”

The moment he heard what I said, Tanner looked surprised and embarrassed. “I am so sorry,” he said. “We are building a fence, but it is not done yet and Axle keeps getting out. I hope he didn’t cause you all any trouble.”

“Not at all! Actually, he was a big help.” I said. I told him about my Bama and the comfort Axle brought to us. It has been three years since that day. Tanner and his family have become good friends of ours. Alan and I see them often—along with Axle, the boxer who brought all of us together. Now Bama’s toys don’t just sit in the basement, gathering dust. Alan and I keep them out for Axle to enjoy whenever he comes over to visit. (150W)

W: What’s it like to work with him? I heard he’s a real tough boss to work for.

M: Mm ... it isn’t easy working for such a perfectionist, but he is so creative, especially with his desserts. I feel like I’m learning a lot just by watching him. Besides, the money is good. How about you? Are you still at the Magic Pan?

W: Yeah. I like the atmosphere in the kitchen there, although the food they serve isn’t really the kind

I want to be making, and I’m definitely not learning much.

W: This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Who recommended it to you? Probably Jane, right?

M: I really don’t remember but it was definitely someone from our office. We don’t have to see it until the end if you don’t want.

W: So what can we do now?

M: Well, there’s a great new Mexican restaurant nearby. Would you like to try it? We could go there for lunch now.

W: That sounds great. I love Mexican food.

M: Maybe after lunch we could take a walk in the park.

W: Yeah. I haven’t been to the park for a long time. And it’s supposed to be really nice out.

M: Right. We’ll spend a few hours quietly relaxing.

M: It sure is cold today. Does the building not have any central heating?

W: Are you wearing enough clothes? I feel warm and comfortable.

M: Well, I wanted to put a sweater on, but I wasn’t sure it was smart enough. I’m still getting to know the dress rules in this company.

W: A lot of people are pretty relaxed about the rules! You’re still new; you’ll get used to them.

M: Well, I’ll be more productive if I feel more comfortable. My fingers are so cold that they are difficult to move today! I’m typing much slower than usual.

W: Poor you! Why don’t you check the lost and found? There might be a spare sweater you can wear for today.

M: Well, I plan to buy one in the supermarket nearby during the lunch break.

W: I need a non-smoking room, please.

M: Fine. So today is the 17th of June and is that just the one night?

W: I will check in tomorrow and I might stay for four nights, but I’ll just book for three because I’m not sure yet.

M: OK. We have rooms available, and you can just extend your stay later if you decide to. Do you have any special requirements?

W: If possible, I’d like a room with a view of a river.

M: I’m afraid there isn’t one available till the 19th. But we have rooms with a view of a park on a hill.

And we can move you then if you like.

W: OK.

M: Well, breakfast is served in the Washington Room between seven and ten. You’ll need to take your registration card with you. If you’d prefer to have breakfast served in your room, just complete the request form and hang it on the outside of the door.

W: Is there a good connection to send e-mails in the room?

M: Well, for some reason the wireless signal isn’t very good in the bedrooms, so we usually advise guests to go to the lounge. Alternatively, there are PCs in the hotel’s business center on the fourth floor.

W: Welcome to the museum. Before we go, let me just give you a taste of what we have here.

Well, for one thing, we have a fine collection of the twentieth and twenty-first century paintings, many by very well-known artists. I’m sure you’ll recognize several of the paintings. This is the gallery that attracts the largest number of visitors, so it’s best to go in early in the day, before the crowds arrive.

Then there are the nineteenth-century paintings and sculptures. The museum was opened in the middle of that century, and several of the artists each donated one work.

Then there’s the collection of coins. Most of them were discovered by farmers digging their gardens, and donated to the museum!

And our clay and glass were left to the museum by its founder. And in the terms of his will, we’re not allowed to add anything to that collection: he believed it was perfect in itself, and we don’t see any reason to disagree!
