体裁:记叙文限时: 6分钟词汇量: 343难度:适中A year after graduation, I was offered a position teaching a writing class. Teaching was a profession I had never seriously considered, though several of my stories had been published. I accepted the job without hesitation, as it would allow me to wear a tie and go by the name of Mr Davis. My father went by the same name, and I liked to imagine people getting the two of us confused. “Wait a minute,” someone might say, “are you talking about Mr Davis the retired man, or Mr Dav is the respectable scholar?”The position was offered at the last minute, and I was given two weeks to prepare, a period I spent searching for briefcase(公文包) and standing before my full length mirror, repeating the words, “Hello, class. I m Mr Davis.” Sometimes Iwould give myself an aggressive voice. Sometimes I would sound experienced. But when the day eventually came, my nerves kicked in and the true Mr Davis was there. I sounded not like a thoughtful professor, but rather a 12year old boy.I arrived in the classroom with paper cards designed in the shape of maple leaves.I had cut them myself out of orange construction paper. I saw nine students alonga long table. I handed out the cards, and the students wrote down their names and fastened them to their breast pockets as I required.“All right then,” I said. “Okay, here we go.” Then I opened my briefcase and realized that I had never thought beyond this moment. I had been thinking that the students would be the first to talk, offering their thoughts and opinions on the events of the day. I had imagined that I would sit at the edge of the desk, overlooking a forest of hands. Every student would yell. “Calm down, you ll all get your turn. One at a time, one at a time!”A terrible silence ruled the room, and seeing no other opinions, I inspected the students to pull out their notebooks and write a brief essay related to the theme of deep disappointment.Great trees are good for nothing but shade. 大树底下好乘凉。

What to ExpectThe host will provide accommodation and meals.Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.Accommodation ZonesHomestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2, 3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the town center as much of central London is commercial and not residential(居住的). Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground.Meal Plans AvailableContinental BreakfastBreakfast and DinnerBreakfast, Packed Lunch and DinnerIt s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast.Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee.Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England.Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by desert, fruit and coffee.FriendsIf you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.Self Catering Accommodation in Private HomesAccommodation on a room only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practice English at home quite as much.文本把握1. 寄宿家庭可以提供哪些?2. 一天的饮食如何安排?3. 要注意哪些事情不能做?()1. But these stations are expensive and sparsely (稀疏地) distributed. Additional sensors could save trees by providing better local climate data to be used in fire prediction models and earlier warnings. However, recharging or replacing batteries by hand at very hard-to-reach locations makes it impractical and costly. The new sensor system seeks to avoid this problem by developing trees into a self-sustaining power supply. Each sensor is equipped with a battery that can be slowly recharged using electricity produced by the tree. “A single tree doesn’t generate a lot of power, but over time the trickle (细流) charge adds up,just like‘________’,”said Shuguang Zhang, one of the researchers on the project and the associate director of the MIT’s Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE).The system produces enough electricity to allow the temperature and humidity sensors to wirelessly send out signals four times a day,or immediately if there’s a fire. Each signal spreads from one sensor to another, until it reaches an existing weather station that sends the data by satellite to a forestry command center in Boise,Idaho.Scientists have long known that trees can produce extremely small amounts of electricity. But no one knew exactly how the energy was produced or how to take advantage of the power.()1. What are the disadvantages of the remote automated weather stations?a. They cost too much.b. They are of poor quality.c. They are not enough.d. They can’t reach remote places.A.a,b B.b,d C.a,c D.b,c()2. Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank?A.Far water does not put out near fireB.All rivers run into seaC.Many a little makes a mickleD.It never rains but it pours()3. What Shuguang Zhang said in Paragraph 4 means that ________.A.a single tree is enough to generate much powerB.the power from the tree can’t be storedC.trees can generate enough power for our lifeD.a tree can produce the electricity to meet the needs of a sensor()4. What would the author talk about after the last paragraph of the passage?A.The amount of electricity trees produce.B.How trees produce electricity.C.Trees’ contributi on to society.D.The research process of tree power.()5. What would be the best title for the passage?A.Preventing forest fires with tree powerB.Trees can produce electricityC.Tree power in daily lifeD.Developing new energy(二)SYDNEY: Australian scientists have found how to switch hunger on and off using a molecule(分子) that targets the brain—a discovery which could stop weight loss in sick patients or produce weight loss in the obese(肥胖的).The molecule, known as MIC-1,is produced by common cancers and targets receptors(受体) in the brain that switch off appetite. But Australian researchers found that by using antibodies(抗体) against MIC-1 they were able to switch appetite back on. When normal and obese mice were treated with MIC-1,they ate less and lost a lot of weight, suggesting that MIC-1 may also be used to treat severe obesity, the Sydney researchers said in a statement yesterday.“This work has given us a better understanding of the part of the brain that regulates appetite,”said Herbert Herzog, director of neuroscience research at the Garvan Institute in Sydney. “Our bodies send complex chemical signals to our brains, which interpret them and send back orders: in this case, eat or don’t eat. Our research indicated that MIC-1 is a previously unrecognized molecule sending a don’teat signal to the brain,” Herzog said. The researchers said it was hoped that in the near future, the MIC-1 findings will prevent many advanced cancer patients from “wasting away(消瘦)”.Sam Breit, who originally cloned the MIC-1 gene, said he believed the findings could have a significant impact on a range of appetite-related disorders. “Injecting mice with MIC-1 protein also made them stop eating, suggesting that it may be possible to use this to advantage for treating patients with severe obesity,” he said. The MIC-1 findings were published in the latest Nature Medicine magazine and the team of researchers led by St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney hope to develop a human antibody and run clinical trials in the next few years.()1. According to the text,MIC-1 ________.A.is produced by cancers of some special typeB.can target receptors in the brain that switch on and off appetiteC.proves effective on mice in making them healthierD.is a molecule that sends a don’teat signal to the brain()2. We can learn from the text that________.A.the researchers now understand better the part of the brain controlling appetite B.the MIC-1 findings have already been put into clinical useC.MIC-1 will surely be used to cure patients of serious obesityD.the researchers originally cloned the MIC-1 gene to treat cancer()3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the text?A.The researchers hoped the findings gene would be applied to treating human diseases soon.B.The researchers hoped the findings would be used to cure cancer patients.C.Sam Breit believed the findings could be useful in treating appetite-related disorders.D.Clinical trials haven’t been run yet.(三)Rome—Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition(反对) to the news that an Italian specialist is on_the_brink_of cloning the first human baby.Dr. Severino Antinori, who is the head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming(声称) that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant (怀孕) with a cloned baby.Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo (胚胎) for implantation within two years. So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.Professor Rudolf Jaeniscb of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said: “I find it astonishing that people do this where theresult can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as guinea pigs. It makes people feel sick.”But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Darmouth College in the US,said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth. So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their births.Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one.“There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr Michael Wilks of the UK.()1. What do the underlined words “on the brink of”in the first paragraph mean most probably?A.on the side of B.on the point ofC.in search of D.in favour of()2. What is the doctors’ general attitude to cloning of humans according to the passage?A.They are against it.B.They support it.C.They welcome it.D.They pay no attention to it.()3. 第二节阅读理解梯度进阶训练(5)Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank and of having nothing to do. Once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it. “What is the use of a book,”thought Alice, “without pictures or conversation?”So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy chain(花环) would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her. There was nothing so VERY remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so VERY much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!” (when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this, but at the time it all seemed quite natural); but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOAT POCKET, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat pocket, or a watch to take out of it. Burning with curiosity, she ran across the field after it, and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge. In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again. The rabbit hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. First, she tried to look down and make out what she was coming to, but it was too dark to see anything; then she looked at the sides of the well, and noticed that they were filled with cupboards and book shelves; here and there she saw maps and pictures hung upon pegs. She took down a jar from one of the shelves as she passed; it was labeled “ORANGE MARMALADE”, but to her disappointment it was empty; she did not like to drop the jar for fear of killing somebody, so she managed to put it into one of the cupboards as she fell past it.“Well!” thought Alice to herself, “after such a fall as this, I shall think nothing of tumblingdown stairs. How brave they ll all think of me at home! Why, I wouldn t say anything about it, even if I fell off the top of the house!” (Which was very likely true.)Down, down, down. Would the fall NEVER come to an end!By LEWIS CARROLL()1. Which of the following is NOT a reason why Alice ran after the rabbit?A. Because she heard the rabbit speak to her.B. Because she was tired of sitting there with nothing to do.C. Because she noticed the rabbit had a waistcoat pocket.D. Because she saw the rabbit take a watch out.()2. Alice s adventure mainly happened .A. in her family gardenB. on the river bankC. in a rabbit holeD. around a hedge()3. As Alice fell down the well, she felt rather .A. disappointedB. proudC. afraidD. relaxed()4. From which sentence can we judge this is a fairy tale?A. “I have nothing to do but make a daisy chain.” said Alice.B. “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” the Rabbit said to itself.C. “THE ORANGE MARMLADE is empty,” said Alice disappointedly.D. The hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid.详解详析这是一篇文学类阅读,节选自“Alice s Adventures in Wonderland”第一部分。
1. A细节理解题。
文章第三段的内容说明了Alice追赶野兔的原因,B选项不是原因,真正让她好奇的是…but when the Rabbit actually TOOK A WATCH OUT OF ITS WAISTCOAT POCKET, and looked at it, and then hurried on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat pocket, or a watch to take out of it. 在这一段文字中野兔穿着马甲、拿出手表,而从这一句…hear the Rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be late!”…可知,野兔是自言自语,而非对她说话。
2. C细节判断题。
根据文章第三段最后一句…and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit hole under the hedge.和第四段中In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.
Oh dear! I shall be too late!”可知这是一则童话故事。
