In an age in which everyone wants to be fit and beautiful, it might come as a surprise that new research shows that exercise is in fact what is stopping us losing weight.

The survey conducted by the Weight-loss and Health Institute (WHI) asked over 1,000

Australians whether their exercise and weight-loss methods were effective. More than half of them admitted that while they exercised, they couldn’t reach their weight-loss goals. The biggest reason the WHI found that was leading to the failure in weight loss was the direct link between strenuous (剧烈的) exercise and the need to “reward” or “treat” yourself after your workout.

Results also show that those who exercise only to lose weight will pay no attention to their diet, with 53 percent admitting they actually eat more after exercising and 41 percent rewarding themselves with sugary treats after. Geoff Jowett, an Australian weight-loss coach, says this is one of the most common reasons why exercise is leading to weight gain. “What happens is they do exercise and then eat a piece of cake, which means they can become fit and fat at the same time,”he added.

A study recently conducted by Arizona State University also found similar results when they studied the effects of strenuous exercise on overweight women. The researchers asked 81 women who always sat for a long time in their work to attend a 12-week exercise program. They were also asked not to change their diet. The end result found that while they were fitter after twelve weeks, they also were fatter. There was no noticeable weight loss among the group and almost 70 percent of the women had piled on some fat during the program.

Jowett says the important thing we should notice is that fitness and weight loss are two ball games. He believes it’s a 80/20 ratio with 80 percent being about what we eat and 20 percent exercise.

So what can be regarded as strenuous exercise? “A walk is good because you can still talk, but if you’re doing exercise like running, cycling and swimming, it won’t be good for weight loss,” Jowett added.

Jowett also notes that the exercise on the TV show The Biggest Loser is not suitable for people who are obviously overweight because it may cause injury, and workouts like running are too strenuous for the body and lead to hunger which results in sugar need and weight gain.

The solution Jowett believes is to separate fitness and weight loss. Deal with the weight problem first by eating healthily and then take 10,000 steps a day.

As for whether exercise is necessary at all, Jowett says if it’s to drop kilos, forget about it.

Everyone should try to join an organization on campus, but the question is whether to join a club or a sorority/fraternity. Many people think that they are not the type of person who would join a sorority or fraternity. In my point of view, I think that the best choice is to simply check out all

of the offered organizations on campus to see which one best fits your interest.

Clubs offer different kinds of choices from social club, to ethnic clubs, to dance teams, and much more. Though clubs do not work as sororities and fraternities do, clubs do offer many other fun and satisfying happy events and activities.

As for sororities and fraternities, there are different types that you might want to take note of. Sororities are for girls only while fraternities are for guys only. However, there are some fraternities for both boys and girls, which specialize in business, medicine, law, community service and the like. The rest of the sororities and fraternities that do not have a specific title are usually social organizations. Though they are social, they do pay attention to other things as well. Another important thing to take note of is that some of these organizations are Asian-interest organizations while others do not include students from Asian countries.

Something else to keep in mind is that anyone can join a club. All you need to do is sign up at their table or show up at one of their meetings. However, it is not so easy to become a member of a sorority or fraternity. Sororities and fraternities require you to take part during their rush week(s) and “rush”for them, which means you need to devote yourself to their events and learn more about the organization. You have to go through different tests before you can become a real member of the organization. Each sorority or fraternity has different ways of accepting their new members.

Joining an organization on campus may seem a bit stressful and confusing. The best thing to do is just relax, go out and explore your choices. Be open-minded and try something new. It might mean the difference between having a common college experience and having some of the best years of your life!

43.Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

A. boys in the college

A. sign up at their table

Dear Girls,

You’re so young right now, but I hope this letter will be helpful to you one day when you’re older. There is so much I wish I could ask my mother about although now I am a grown woman. There is so much we never got to talk about. I’m planning on standing by forever, but even so, I think these letters will be useful in some way. Who knows how things will change down the road, and at least you’ll have your 34-year-old mother’s thoughts written down on paper.

Anyway, I want this letter to be about beauty and my relationship with it. I feel it is my

responsibility, as a mother of two little girls, to lead you down a path that is relatively healthy when it comes to beauty and self-image. In a lot of women’s eyes, I’ve probably already failed in this aspect due to a lot of pink Barbie dolls in Vera’s room right now.

But I will say this about Barbie dolls: I played with Barbie dolls for many years when I was growing up and here I have a healthy body and a positive image. I have a Master’s degree, a successful career and a published book. If Barbie dolls were really so damaging to my femininity (女人气质) and self-image, I highly doubt I could list all of these achievements.

It’s hard for women to maintain a healthy self-image. It’s hard not to worry about our weight and not to wish we could afford more stylish clothes. It’s hard not to want someone else’s hair or eyelashes.

I have girlfriends around whom I have to make myself ready to be seen, because even though I love them, just being around them makes me self-conscious(忸怩的). I look at old pictures of my mother and wonder why I’ve never been able to be as skinny as she was. And then I have friends who are thinner than their mothers ever were. We women go round and round in circles, holding hands and trying to be one another sometimes.

Men like to think we dress and style ourselves for them, but why would we when they hardly notice? I’ve never tried so hard to look good when I know I’m about to meet up with a stylish girlfriend. It’s she who will notice my slim waist or the little bracelet on my arm.

And I have no doubt that two of you, Veronica and Juliette, will endlessly compare yourselves to each other. You will wonder why one of you has longer legs or shinier hair or thicker eyelashes. I know this, not because I know sisters, but because I know women. The thing I’ll tell you, or the thing to remember, is this: not even the prettiest of us feel settled. The girl you think looks the most perfect in all the world is probably the girls who wants to change herself more than anyone else.

Don’t let that message carry any weight within yourselves. You are not worthless. You are so full of love and light and you should let it shine through your every second. If someone pushes you down for standing tall, then just push yourself back up and stand even taller, and know that the reason why they pushed you down in the first place is just that they’re scared. I want to tell you that I have never in my life felt more beautiful than when I have stood my tallest.

Stand tall.

Love,

Mom

Indeed, if we have been harmed, we should not forget it. We can learn from the past about how to avoid being harmed in the future. Nor is forgiveness a way of exonerating (免除责任) the one who has hurt us. We recognize that the harm did happen and the person must be responsible for this and must come to terms with their own guilt. When we forgive, we are not sacrificing anything or giving up our sense of self-worth. Indeed, we are doing just the opposite by taking a stand which says that we are strong and finally free of playing the role of victim. Forgiveness is a way of declaring our honesty. Forgiveness is a way of saying that the pain of the past should now be put behind me. Thus, forgiving is a reflection of positive self-esteem. It means that we have better things to do in life than continuing to live under the influence of the one who has caused us pain. Forgiveness signifies breaking the cycle of pain and abuse (辱骂), giving up the belief that the other person should hurt as much as we do. It means abandoning the myth that if we hurt the other person, it will make us feel better. Forgiveness implies giving up the unrealistic hope that an apology will
