Graduates Face Many Barriers in Job

Hunting

It is graduation time again. Whether joining the social workforce or pu rsuing advanced studies, about four million Chinese graduates will soon turn a new page in their lives. St ill, no matter what, campus life wi ll remain deeply etched on the mind s of China's former students. What lies ahead for the country's graduat es?

Statistics released by relevant depar tments of China show that in 2006, graduates from all Chinese colleges and universities numbered 4.13 mill ion, up 750,000 from 2005 with a g rowth rate of roughly 22%. Hence, t he employment tension further intensi fies. Meanwhile, various intangible b arriers exist in social relations, r

Currently the contradiction in China' s higher education has transferred f rom entering to leaving a university and from the difficulty in enrollm ent to employment after graduation. It has become a common phenomenon t hat "graduates become jobless". Shoul d this problem not be tackled right ly, the employment issue would turn into a new factor that causes soc ial instability.

College—A New Experience

Living at college, first of all, gi ves me a sense of responsibility, o f being on my own. My parents aren ’t around to say, ―No, you’re not going out tonight‖or ―Did you finish your homework?‖Ever ything I do has to be my decision, and that gives me the responsibili ty of handling my own life. During the second week I was at college, I had to go out and look for a bank where I could open an accoun t. Before that I looked in the pho ne book since I had no clue about any banks around here or where th

ey were located. I went to the ban k and made decisions for myself—whe ther to have a checking or savings account and whether or not to get a MASTER card.

Friendly people: that’s another aspect I like about college. On m y first day (and even now) people were nice to me. I came to Marymou nt University here in Virginia from New York and –even though I’d been here before—I was a bit con fused about where I was going. My mother and I drove in, not knowing the building we were supposed to go to, and the guard was especially nice: with a smile, he told us w hat building we were looking for an

d wher

e we could park our car. Som

e upperclassmen saw me and asked,

―Are you a new student?‖When the y found out I was looking for my

dormitory, one said, ―Oh, just follow us; that’s where we’re going.‖Even now I feel comfortable in the dorm because there are friendly people around t o talk with. Finally—to add t o my likes of college—I love havin g Saturdays off. Also, I love to s leep in, something I couldn’t do i n high school.

How Can We Finance Our College Educ

ation?

Nowadays, tuition fees for co llege are much higher than ever bef ore. How to finance our college edu cation has become a matter of conce rn for many students, especially tho se who are from the remote areas. Actually, there are many ways to so lve this problem. We can get the m oney from our parents. We can apply for a loan especially set up for college students. We can also acqu ire the money entirely by ourselves, keeping a part-time job in our sp are time and doing a full-time job

in summer and winter holidays. Or we can ask our parents for most of the money and earn the rest in our spare time in college.

As far as I am concerned, I prefer the last way. I don't want to de pend entirely on my parents, which will be a burden to them. Nor do I want to work in my free time fo r the tuition alone, because I woul d like to have enough time for my school work. If my parents pay mo st of the tuition for me, I will work part time for the rest and th is, I believe, can make my college life rich and colorful

Introduction of My College

I'm a student at Maebashi Institute of Technology in Gunma. It is loc ated between Komagata and Shinmaebash

i on the JR Ryomo Line. It's only

10 minutes from JR Maebashi statio n on a bus or a taxi.

Maebit was originally founded in 195 2 as a junior college and it evolv ed into a four-year college in 1997 . Today there are some 700 students in both the junior college and th e four-year undergraduate school.

Our school offers two sets of progr ams, the day course and the evening course. Students can choose whichev er suits their conveniences best fro m those two courses. Many lessons h ere are taught in small-sized classe s.

I'm in the Department of Inf ormation Engineering. My field of st udy is Robotics. The first period b egins at 9:30 a.m., which is rather late, and the last period of the

day course ends at 4:55 p.m. The classes for the evening course beg in at 5:45 p.m. and end at 8:50 p .m.

Maebit's campus is not very large but it has a lot of flowerbe ds and plants. On campus there are the library, the club building, sp orts fields, the student union hall, the laboratory building, and many other facilities. Our department buil ding lies in the northwest corner o f campus. This building was built a bout five years ago, and

everything is still new in this bui lding.

There are many clubs, but I' m not a member of any club. One o f my friends is a member of the T ennis Club in which there are 5 me mbers. They practice every Wednesday and Saturday afternoon. The

y are hoping to make it into the best 8 in the coming intercollegiate tournament.

I like my college. I have already made some good friends and we're en joying our school life.

Coping with Stress in College College life can be very stressful.

Sometimes parents, faculty and othe rs tend to idealize their college e xperience and remember it as that i dyllic time when they had few worri es or responsibilities. To students currently attending college, however, the process is often stressful and frustrating. The competition for gr ades, the need to perform, relations hips, career choice, and many other aspects of the college environment cause stress.

But before condemning stress outright , we need to understand that stress is only harmful when it is excess ive. Much of the stress that we al l experience is helpful and stimulat ing. The challenges of life tend to be stressful and an attempt to av oid stress completely would lead to a rather boring existence. The pro blem comes when you experience too

much stress.

There are four primary sources of s tress: the environment, (noise, pollu tion, traffic, crowding, and the wea ther), physiology, (illness, injuries, hormonal fluctuations, and inadequat e sleep or nutrition), students’th oughts (negative self-talk, catastroph izing, and perfectionism), and social stressors (financial problems, work demands, social events, and losing a loved one). Symptoms of stress appear in many forms. Some symptoms only impact the person who is dir ectly experiencing stress, while othe r symptoms may have an impact on o ur relationships with others. Altho ugh some stress reactions are part of deeper and more serious emotional problems, many are not, and can b e handled with relatively simple cou nseling and stress-management techniqu

es. Developing a balanced lifestyle, gaining perspective by discussing p roblems with other students or tutor s, specifying relaxation techniques, and clarifying your values and culti vating a sense of life meaning can help you relieve your stress in c ollege.

Sports

From the earliest times, people have held sports competitions. The athle tic few compete on the field while the rest of us participate from t he safety of our seats.Today sports are certainly as popular as ever, and because of radio and televisio n, we can now compete from a dista nce.

In fact, for important compet itions, the whole world becomes one big stadium. It is hard to sa y why humans like organized games. The reasons that we enjoy sports pr obably differ from person to person. Whether little kids are kicking a ball around a city playground, or million-dollar-a-year athletes are p laying in a modern stadium, the exc itement of competition, motion, disci

pline, and beauty are in the air. Who doesn’t stop to watch a ball game in the street or a swimmer in a pool? What parents are not prou d to see their children carried off the field by thankful fans? For t he players, the joys of sportsmanshi p can include punishing self-discipli ne and the friendship of teammates.

Then there is special thrill t hat comes only to a lucky few. It is the thrill that comes from hea ring thousand voices shout your name . But personal victory is only one kind of victory. In every game so meone must lose, but mankind wins e very time an athletic record is bro ken. It is this aspect of sports t hat brings people together.

Even in defeat, no one says to a n athlete,So what

You say,Good try! And when your pri de gets hurt and your muscles are sore, you say to yourself, ―That’s part of the game. I’ll win next time!

How to Deal with School Pressure College can be a very demanding tim e for students. Professors, class pr ojects, and extracurricular activities can all contribute to a stressed-o ut college student. While you will undoubtedly experience stress as a c ollege student, following these tips may help keep college stress at a minimum before it becomes too hard to handle.

Prioritize your schoolwork. Identify what is most important. If you have a presentation to give this Monday , don’t write a one-page review th at’s due in a couple of weeks; pr epare for the presentation first. Li kewise, if you have an assignment t hat requires a lot of work, put it at the top of your list. When yo u prioritize your work, you will be more efficient. By becoming more o

2. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents are the best teachers. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Obviously, the earliest teachers we have in our lives in most cases are our parents, and they are generally the most involved in the development and education of their children. Yet neither are all parents good teachers nor are those good parents the best teachers. First of all, not all parents are good teachers. As normal individuals, some parents more or less have bad habits. Even though parents almost instinctively devote themselves to cultivating their offspring, the outcome might turn out to be disappointment, for all children tend to unconsciously or subconsciously copy every thing from their parents. Another deficiency of parents as teachers is the fact that most parents are lack of common senses of education. All too often we observe some parents tend to pursue their cherished but failed dream by forcing their children to develop in a prearranged direction. Ironically, if their children did not follow the instructions, the children would be regarded as disobedient or allegedly rebellious. In fact, it is parents rather than their children that virtually disobey common senses. Moreover, some parents are qualified as good teachers, but not all of them are the best ones. When children are in the preliminary school, it is not surprising that parents are capable of teaching their children almost every subject even better than professional teachers in the school. But the situation will not last long. We live in a world where knowledge is accumulated by multiplying and at the same time becomes more and more specialized. Therefore, to be a professional in a certain field today takes much longer time than ever before. No parent is able to be professional in all fields, though they might be experts in one or more fields. Wise parents often release rather than charge their children as early as possible. They are aware of the possibility outside the family. Parents may, nevertheless, help their children much more than do good teachers. Most parts of children education are virtually beyond teachers' reaches. It is parents that supplement. Psychology studies have shown us that parents' love sometimes has astonishingly magic power to their children. Albert Einstein's mother and Forest Gump's mother are both good examples. On the other hand, parents might do their children harm more than do bad teachers as well. The natures of those children whose parents have divorced are often severely distorted. In a word, it is rather superficial to simply say that parents are the best teachers. [404 words] 4. It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why? Both experiences and books are very essential resources, and both of them have relevant merits. Experiences are the most direct resources we ever have. Almost our every basic skill came from experiences, such as walking, articulating, reading even thinking. Without experiences, some natural born abilities even might lose. Studies have shown that a baby who was robbed by animals into forest for 12 years lost his ability to talk in human language. Furthermore, it is generally accepted that each and every skill develops by experiences, and that's why people always say practice makes perfect. Books are valuable when knowledge is beyond the scope of our experiences. Perhaps the most obvious examples are those fluent writers. They write various stories, the scopes of which are far beyond any individual's experiences. Take Joyce Carol Oates for example, her productivity has been prodigious, accumulating in less than two decades to nearly thirty titles, including novels, collections of short stories and verse, plays and literary criticism. Although some of them appear to come from her own direct observations, her dreams, and her fears, much more is clearly from the experiences of others. Her fictive world remains strikingly akin to that real one reflected in the daily newspapers, the television news and talk shows, and the popular magazines of our day. Yet either experiences or books may give us wrong information. Our direct observations always are subject to our beliefs, hopes, fears, expectations, and our bias, which might make observations unreliable. People vary in their powers of observation, and the reliability of our observations is no better than the reliability of our memories, which as we know can be deceptive. Information printed in papers sometimes is unreliable either, it may be misprinted, or even deliberately distorted. For example, Definitions such as Marxism, Capitalism, Zionism are totally different in the Oxford Learner's Dictionary of Current English between the original edition and the sanctioned Russian edition. 1

Accordingly, the housing problem in big cities is becoming more and more serious. People have offered many solutions to this problem. I think building satellite cities in the suburbs is more practical. The fresh air and beautiful secnery in the suburbs will be appealing to the city citizens, who suffer from air pollution, noises, etc. in the overcrowded city. With more people leaving the city, more space will be available for those remaining. The housing problem in big cities will thus be solved. 3. “The younger generation knows best” Old people are always saying that the young are not what they were. The same comments is made from generation to generation and it is always true. It has never been truer than ti is today. The young are better educated. They have a lot more money to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up more quickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They think more for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideas of their elders. Events, which the older generation remembers vividly, are nothing more than past history. This is as it should be. Every new generation is different from the one preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed. The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have been around a bit longer. They don’t like to feel that their values are being questioned or threatened. And this precisely what the young are doing. They are questioning the
