Do n ot blame schools for these massacres. Schools simply take what they are sent. Questi on the killers ' parents. The parents are supposed to teach their children respect and empathy （认同和理解另U 人 的感情）for others ' lives. Parents should help their offspring learn to handle taunt （ 嘲弄）or conflict without resort ing to viole nee.
All concerned adults should take a youth ' threat to shoot some one as seriously as airport security guards take jokes about bombs. Stude nts must be en couraged to tell teachers if a classmate threate ns or jokes about viole nee. Admi nistrators at schools around the country n eed to emphasize they will take such reports seriously, and that they will not identify any student who comes forward with such a report.
More gun regulatio ns probably won 'stop these shoot in gs, but gun owners and sellers must take more resp on sibility for keep ing weap ons away from young people. Gun owners should keep their guns unioaded, locked up and hidden away. Most car owners don 'leave their keys in the car even when they park in their own garage; gun owners should be at least as careful with weap ons.
The federal government can t solve this problem. Schools alone can t solve it. More guns won ' solve it. America ns must con sciously create a culture that makes viole nee un acceptable. Parents n eed to stop allowing their children ' minds to be polluted with violenee. News media need to show more restra int and thought about how and what they report.

The Swedes are among the most charming peoples in Europe. And their charm comes from an apparent contradiction in the national character. They are extremely conservative in social relationships; within the family and when meeting friends and business acquaintances, their conduct is governed by strict social patterns. At the same time, they are one of the most intellectually progressive peoples in the world. They are always open to new ideas.
All social occasions in Sweden are regulated by rules and traditions. And these traditions are expressed in a specific ritual (礼仪)made up of formal bows, han dshakes, and greet in gs. Swedish homes are among the best equipped in the world and travelers in Sweden find their journeys made easy by the use of the most efficient modern devices.

Passage Three
Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all do the trick, but the biggest longevity ( 长寿) boost seems to come from marriage or an equivalent relationship. The effect was first noted in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows and widowers ( 鳏夫) were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman ' s. The effect holds for all causes of death, whether illness, accident or self-harm.
Even if the odds are stacked against you, marriage can more than compensate. Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Likewise, a married man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn ' t smoke. There side, however, as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their spouse ' s death, and caring for a spouse with mental disorder canalvee you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the odds favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects.
So how does it work? The effects are complex, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service provision, emotional support and other more physiological ( 生理的) mechanisms. For example, social contact can boost development of the brain and immune system, leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner.
