We grew up with the familiar toy bricks (积木) that gave us the imagination to build towers and castles. Generations have been attracted by this toy that lets children and adults alike create anything and everything. But with over 200 millions sets being sold a year in over 100 countries, the question remains — where did Lego actually come from?

Lego was born from the creative mind of Danish carpenter (木匠), Ole Kirk Christiansen, back in the early 1930s. He established a small business in Denmark. He and his team built a variety of household goods like ironing boards along with wooden toys. The Lego name was adopted in 1934,

formed from the Danish words “Leg Godt” or “play well”, which means “I study” or “I put together” in Latin.

Christiansen’s company cont inued to make wooden toys until 1942 when fire struck — the entire Lego factory burned to the ground. Unwilling to give in, the factory was rebuilt and the production line restarted soon after. By 1954, Christiansen’s son, Godtfred, had become the junior managing director of the Lego Group. It was during his conversation with an overseas buyer that he was struck by the idea of a toy system.

For over 30 years, the Lego Company made only toys and related goods. Then, in 1968, the company opened its first Legoland in Denmark. Combining the Lego building bricks with a computer, the Robotics Invention System 1.5 is now the most advanced toy in the Lego Company, which is targeted at users aged twelve and above, and that includes any parents or grandparents that want to join in.

My grandfather spent most of his life in a turbulent (动乱的) India. After settling in New York, he took up his true passion: gardening.

Grandfather’s garden was where I took refuge (避难) from a world of adults and schoolwork. My grandfather cultivated squash (南瓜) and tomatoes — it was not rare to find me somewhere in the garden, either secretly eating a tomato, or just sitting and admiring my grandfather’s hard work. However, as time went by, I did not have the chance to visit his house as often as I used to.

On my eleventh birthday, I received a gift bag wrapped in pretty paper from my grandfather. Excited to see what he had given to me for my birthday, I tore apart the paper only to find a yellow squash. I was very angry. What a stupid present!

But gradually, I realized that in my developing a relationship with his garden, I had unknowingly grown very close to my grandfather himself, something he wished to remind me of through his gift. His commitment towards doing things definitely influenced me. It could bring him a sense of accomplishment. Because of him, I try to model the idea of approaching everything with both drive and passion.

My grandfather passed away five years ago, but his influence on me could not be bigger than it is today. As I prepare to enter college and move on from my relatively sheltered high school life toward achieving complete independence, allowing my passions to find their way into whatever I may be doing will be very necessary. I still look up to my grandfather very much to this day,

Doctors have a new weapon in the battle against obesity (过度肥胖) — a talking plate that tells people not to eat too quickly. The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate, and tells users, “Please eat more slowly.”

The £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in a National Health Service plan to help hundreds of obese families lose weight. It comes in two parts — a scale placed under the plate and a small computer screen showing a graphic(图表) of the food gradually disappearing as the user eats. A red line on the screen shows the user’s eating speed, while a blue line shows a healthy rate. If the user eats too fast, the red line angles away from the blue one, warning him or her to ease off. If the lines deviate (偏离) too much, the computer voice comes on, and the screen flashes the message “Are you feeling full yet?” to remind users to think about whether they have had enough.

Britain has an increasingly serious obesity problem, with one in four adults and one in seven children classed as obese. After a recent trial using the device, experts believe teaching obese people to eat more slowly will help them know when they are full. Around 600 families with at least one obese parent and child (aged five or older) were targeted in the project by Bristol University, along with GPs and nurses.

Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield, who is leading the plan, says obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 percent less per meal at the end of the 12-month trial. Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less, and continued to lose weight. “It will be a powerful tool to help families retrain their eating habits,” he says.

The TV program, A Bite of China, featuring delicious Chinese food, has attracted countless viewers, and moved many to tears.

A Bite of China is a serious documentary providing a unique view of Chinese as well as the relations between people and food and between people and society from the view of food. The touching documentary reminds some people of their mother, and makes some realize that every grain comes from hard and laborious work. Some people see patriotism (爱国精神) in the documentary, and some consider it a great cultural export.

How did this documentary achieve a great influence beyond its subject matter in such a short time?

“It is not empty propaganda (宣传) about China’s splendid food culture. Instead, it shows the techniques used in making food and their production process as well as the lives of ordinary people, thus striking a chord (共鸣) with the audience,” an Internet user said. The success of the documentary should be attributed to sincerity and reality. Nowadays, many works of art that have high investment, high technology, and magnificent scenes lack nothing but sincerity and reality.

A Bite of China shows that a commercial documentary promoting patriotism can be full of touching details, that the emotions of ordinary Chinese people should be exhibited even in publicizing China overseas, and that even a completely commercial program can achieve both artistic and commercial success.

“We made this documentary with our respect and love for food,” said director Chen Xiaoqing. Being sincere is the most important thing for artists because they cannot move others unless they themselves are first moved, and cannot convince others unless they themselves are first convinced. Sincerity is the “secret” for making this documentary so popular, and every cultural creator should learn from its success.

A.be caused by

B. contribute to

C. be devoted to

D. result in

B. Real lives of all Chinese people.

C. Patriotic stories of Chinese people.

D. Process of preparing food.

23. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The documentary is so successful that no one can surpass it.

B. Different people can get different messages from the documentary.

C. The documentary should have shown China’s splendid food culture.

D. Many art works fail to reflect reality and high technology.

24. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. Director’s respect and love for food.

B. The secret of the documentary’s success.

C. The influence of the documentary.

D. The popularity of the documentary.

When I started a novel when I was younger, I wanted to finish it the next day. When I started a business, I wanted to sell it a day later. When I started graduate school, I was already planning how I was going to be the fastest PhD in history.

Around the time that I had planned on receiving that PhD, I ended up getting thrown out. “Lack of maturity (成熟),” the letter said.

I don’t believe that “life is short”. Sometimes it feels very long. I wish every day was already over just so I could get to the next. And the next. An imaginary tomorrow always seems to be better than today in my head. This makes me think of my hero, Gene Wolfe, a great inventor and writer. Gene Wolfe was given the task of taking a baked potato, pressing it down, and slicing it up so that it could fit into a tennis ball can. Well, he did it. He invented Pringles (品客薯片).

Many normal human beings, not as devoted to status and creativity as Gene was, might say: “OK, that’s my life’s achievement. I’ve created an easily storable food based on a vegetable that will please children and adults for decades, maybe centuries.”

If I were Gene I would have rested on what I have achieved and played golf with friends. But Gene knew the magic secret: one page a day.

He writes a page a day. A page is about 300 words. A paragraph or two. Can you do that? Gene ended up writing 50 published novels, including many bestsellers and award-winners.

He didn’t get stereotyped and put in that Pringles can. He did what he loved to do. That’s what keeps you alive every day. Life is too long, but you shouldn’t reject the opportunities in front of you every day.

I was talking to James Manos, the creator of Dexter. He said: “My definition of success is not being able to tell the difference between work and pleasure.”

It’s OK if right now the two are separate for you. Today is a new day. This is my page today.

25. When the author started graduate school, _____.

A.he made up his mind to finish a novel before graduation

B.he decided to follow his hero’s example and start a business

C.he didn’t expect to end up being thrown out

D.he realized that life is too short to be wasted

26.Which of the following about Gene Wolfe is NOT true?

A.He is the person who invented Pringles.

B.He is the author’s role model.

C.Some of his novels are very popular.

D.He usually finishes his books in just a few days.

27.With the article, the author mainly wants to tell us that _____.

A.work and pleasure are equally important in life

B.opportunities play a big part in success

C.we should make the most of every day

D.we should always be hopeful about tomorrow

Scientists usually search rainforests, deep ocean or other wild spots to find new plant and animal species. So when a new species of frog was found in New York, Scientists were surprised. Three years ago, Rutgers University science student Jeremy Feinberg heard something strange as he listened to southern leopard frog calls. Instead of the normal repeated croaking (呱呱地叫) of most frogs, he heard just one single cluck (咯咯叫). “When I first heard these frogs calli ng, I knew something was very off,” Feinberg explains.

Feinberg walked around New York and New Jersey listening to the sounds and collecting samples. He shared his research with biologist Catherine E. Newman who was studying leopard frogs.

Newman a nalyzed the frog’s DNA. She compared the new frog’s DNA with the DNA of southern and northern leopard frogs. Even though the frogs looked nearly the same, their DNA was very different.

“It’s what we call a ‘cryptic species’— one species hidden within another because we can’t tell them apart by looking,” Feinberg says. “But thanks to molecular genetics, people are really picking out species more and more that would otherwise be ignored.”

Feinberg believes the frog also once lived in Manhattan, but its current habitat ranges from the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in New Jersey to northern countries of New York. It may even be living in parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The center of the frog’s habitat seems to be Yankee Stadium. But so far, Feinberg hasn’t found any frogs living around the famous baseball field.

Joanna Burger is Feinberg’s advisor at Rutgers University. “It is amazing to discover a new frog in Rutgers’ backyard. The frog was among us for a century without being recognized,” Burger says. “We need to do all that we can to make sure we protect it.”

“Well I hate to bring it up because I know you got enough pressure on you already. But…we agreed to get married as soon as you won your first case(law case). Meanwhi le, ten years later…my niece…the daughter of my sister is getting married. My biological clock is ticking like this (stomp, stomp, stomp). And the way this case is going…I ain’t never getting married.”

“Lisa, I don’t need this. I swear to God I don’t need this right now.”

Using it this way, a biological clock means the time in a woman’s life when she is able to bear children. In the not-so-distant past, most people thought that when a woman reached her 40s it was too late for her to have children. The time on her biological clock had run out. Well, that has changed. These days some women are resetting their biological clocks. They are giving themselves more time to have children.

Make no mistake. Being a “Single Mother by Choice” is very different from younger women who find themselves pregnant, perhaps not by choice.

Generally speaking, single mothers by choice are older and well educated. They are usually financially secure and successful in their careers. So, they have the money. What they may not have is a partner.

This is the place in life where writer Kerry Reichs found herself several years ago. She says she did not plan to become a single mother. She says she just did not find the right partner.

“Well, I think I had a set of standards for the partner I was looking for and I didn’t meet anyone that fit those standards. And, at 39 I found myself single, without children and I wanted them very much. So, I made the difficult decision that I could do this on my own.

Hidden in our subconsciousness (潜意识) is a perfect mental picture. We see ourselves on a long trip that goes across the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we think in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle feeding on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, or row upon row of corn and wheat, of flat lands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of city skylines and village halls.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw(拼图玩具) puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles(通道), condemning the minutes for loitering --waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.

“When we reach the station, that will be it!” we cry. “When I’m 38.” “When I buy a new 450SL Mercdes Benz!” “When I put the last kid through college.” “When I have paid off the loan!” “When I get a promotion.” “When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily

ever after! ”

Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.

“Relish(appreciate) the moment” is a good motto, actually it isn’t the burdens of today that drive man mad. It is the regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.

So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. Then the station will come soon enough.

25.Why does the author describe the mental picture?

A.To lead us into a perfect world. B.To let people enjoy the scenery.

C.To introduce an actual trip of his. D.To compare it to our life’s journey.

26.How do people feel when they’re on their trip?

27.What does the author mean by “Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today” in Line 2 Paragraph 5?

A.Regret and fear are responsible for the loss of today. B.We must be careful of the two thieves: regret and fear.

C.regret and fear stop us from enjoying our present life. D.We’re frequently challenged by the two : regret and fear.

28.Why does the author write the passage?

A.To teach us a good lesson. B.To tell us the right attitude to life.

C.To advice us to forget our worries. D.To stop us wandering along the aisles.

Expensive and new gloves allow chatterboxes(话匣子)to take the term “handsfree” to a new level—by talking into them as they make a call. The gloves are known as “Talk to the Hand” and cost £1,000 a pair. They fixed a speaker unit into the thumb and a microphone into the little finger that can be connected to any mobile handset using Bluetooth.

Artist Sean Miles designed the new gloves that double as a phone in part of his project that shows the possibilities of gadget(小装置,小机械) recycling. He uses outdated gloves and combines them with parts from mobile handsets recycled through O2, which commissioned(承担)the project. Mobile phone users will be able to keep their hands warm while they chat without taking their phones out of their pockets or handbags.

Mr Miles designed two pairs of the new gloves—one in pink and the other in brown and yellow. They will appear in an exhibition this July and visitors will be able to win the gloves. If demand is high, they will then be produced on a larger scale. O2 Recycle, which backed the project, estimates that there are already 70 million unused mobile handsets in the UK. The service pays up to £260 to those who recycle gadgets including phones, handheld consoles, MP3 players and digital cameras.

Designer Sean Miles hopes his work will get people thinking about recycling. The 41-year-old said, “I hope that my ‘Talk to the Hand’ project will get people to think again about the waste created by not recycling gadgets. If a few more people recycle their gadgets rather than send them to trash, I think this project will have fulfilled its aim.”

Bill Eyres, head of O2 Recycle, urges people to recycle their phone responsibly. He said, “There’s a pressing need for all of us to look at outdated handset s, and all the gadgets that we move on from or upgrade each year. Whether they are consoles or cameras, we should think of them as a resource that we need to recycle responsibly rather than throw them away.”

Throughout the United States there are many towns and cities that have been named after not only European cities but other countries as well, such as China, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Just how many New World place names are recycled from the Old World names has never been tallied, but one researcher found forty-one Londons, fifty-six Berlins, twenty-four Dublins, thirty-two Athenses, and twenty-seven Moscows, among others!

Reasons for European place names differ. Some were in memory of settlers’ former homes, others in honor of historic events. Founded in 1818 by John Coffee, Robert Beaty, John D. Carroll, and John Read, Athens is one of the oldest incorporated cities in the State of Alabama. The town was first called Athenson, and the name was then shortened to Athens, after the ancient city in Greece. More interestingly, some names were given by mistake. For instance, the people of Moscow, Kansas, wanted their city to follow the name of the explorer Moscoso. They shortened his name to Mosco, and an official in Washington, thinking the Kansans couldn't spell, added

a ‘W’.

A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift —$ 7,000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. “It really made a difference when we were going under financially.” says Dave.

But the Fusses weren’t the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected le gacy from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches’ generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in others, it was more than $100,000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money, more than $3 million —they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on (喜欢) comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn’ t afford it. “Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything.” says their friend Sandy Van Weelden, “They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.”

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches’ wish that th eir legacy — a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cents —should enrich the whole community and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors —that was Ish and Arlene Hatch’ s story.

The trip to the United States opened my eyes to the fact that there are a lot of similarities as well as differences between American youth and French youth.

The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing, often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.

There are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want.

With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.

To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’ behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.

A. their relationship’s future

B. their public images

C. their physical displays

D. their lover’s ideas

15. The passage is mainly about the______ between American youth and French youth.

Toast (土司), perfume and washing powder are the smells most likely to hit you when you walk through the door of your home, according to a new study.

Researchers have identified(确认) the whiffs which they claim make a house a home, with washing powder making up 34 percent. Freshly made toast accounts for another 22 percent, while perfume makes up 17 percent. Other smells which will typically hit you as you step through front doors around Britain include last night’s dinne r (10 percent), flowers (12 percent), coffee (5 percent) and pets.

Seven percent of Britons—around 1.5 million—claim that a unique smell is what makes their house a home, above the furniture or decoration.Half admit the smell of home makes them feel safe and warm, while it leaves one in 10 feeling worried or upset. A third of people have tried to recreate a certain smell to make them feel more at home. A further third have put off buying a property because of how it smells and three quarters believe you can find out a great deal about a person from the smell of their home. Four in 10 people have avoided visiting someone

Three in 10 wish they could have smells of their own home while on holiday. A further two in 5 would like to smell their living room while out shopping as the smell of home makes a third feel relaxed and stress-free.

Professor Tim Jacob, an expert in the psychology of smell, said, “Smells make a house a home because of the positive associations being ‘home’ has. Your home is filled with the things you love—your children, partner, perfume, pets—so when you smell them, you instantly feel better and at ease.

N o one else knew about the extra club in Zach Nash’s golf bag. It belonged to a friend, and Zach forgot it was there as he played his way to victory in a junior tournament(锦标赛)this summer in Wisconsin, US.

The 14-year-old accepted his medal, celebrated with grandparents who had come from a long way to watch. But when he stopped by his country club to share the news, a professional player noticed something wrong. “Count your clubs,” he told the teenager.

Fifteen—one more than allowed. Zach’s eyes filled with tears.

If Zach had just won a basketball championship or a soccer game and someone had discovered a violation after the win, it would not have mattered. It is nothing unusual for a soccer player to dive to the turf to draw fouls(假摔以使对方犯规).

Golf is different. In a win-at-all-costs world, the game holds itself to a higher standard. Golf isn’t a game where referees watch closely. In golf tournaments, dozens of competitors are spread across acres of land, so officials cannot hope to see each shot. Competitors call penalties (处罚)on themselves.

“It was a sport for gentlemen, and gentlemen did not care about winning. They care about doing the right thing,” said Robert Simon, a golf coach at Hamilton College in New York.

Honesty became a medal of honor. When one of the game’s early stars, Bobby Jones, was praised for calling a penalty on himself at the 1925 US Open, he replied: “You might as well praise a man for not robbing a bank.”

So even the error had no effect on Zach’s final score—he has never used the extra club. The teenager packed up his medal and dropped it in the mail. “But this was golf, and rules are rules. I just knew what I had to do,” he said.

Then came another tournament. Before teeing off(开球), Zach counted his clubs—four times.

Some years ago, three brothers left the farm to work in the city. They were all hired by the same company and on the same pay. Three years later, Jim was being paid $500 a month, Frank was receiving $1000, but George was making $1500.

Their father was confused and decided to visit the employer. After listening to the father, the employer said, “I will let the boys explain for themselves.”

Jim was called to the offi ce and was told, “Jim, I learn the Far East Importers has just brought in a large transport plane loaded with Japanese import goods. Will you please go over to the airport and get a cargo inventory(运货清单)?”

Three minutes later, Jim returned to the office. “The cargo was one thousand bolts(卷) of Japanese silk,” Jim reported. “I got the information over the telephone from a member of the crew.”

When Jim left, Frank, the $1000 a month brother, was called in.

An hour later, Frank was back in the office with a list showing that the plane carried 1000 bolts of Japanese silk, 500 transistor radios(晶体管收音机), and 1000 hand painted bamboo plates. George, the $1500 a month brother, was given the same instructions. Working hours were over when he finally returned. “The transport plane carried one thousand bolts of Japanese silk,” he began. “It was on sale at sixty dollars a bolt, so I took a two-day choice on the whole lot.

I have telegrammed a designer in New York offering the silk at seventy-five dollars a bolt. I expect to have the order tomorrow. I also found five hundred transistor radios, which I sold over the telephone at a profit of $2.30 each. There were a thousand bamboo plates, but they were of poor quality, so I didn’t try to do anything with them.”

It’s a little understood, but surprisingly common condition which women from all walks of life are suffering from—Asker’s Syndrome. The main symptom of Asker’s Syndrome is that you’re unable to ask for what you want.

I took notice of Asker’s Syndrome during a recent visit from my mother and mother-in-law. Both of them are unable to express something as simple as what they would like for dinner. For example, asking my mum which frozen meal she would like goes something like this:

Me: Which dinner do you want?

Her: You choose.

Me: No. You choose, you’re the one who’s going to eat it.

Her: Whichever one you do n’t want.

Me: Mum!!!

Her: Just open the fridge and the first one you pull out will do.

Similarly, when I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals she’d like me to order from the home-delivery she would like and she said, “I’ll just have whichever one is left over.” This goes way beyond politeness. After pushing both of them at length to state a preference—and failing—it would seem that they are actually incapable of voicing what they want.

And it’s not just older women who have a “this is good enough for me” attitude. A friend who works in marketing told me about a focus group she ran with thirty-something women. They were only able to express their preferences through their children or partner. Rather than saying what they liked, they wou ld answer “My son would like this,” or “My husband would enjoy that.”

Asker’s Syndrome can strike young. At five years old my daughter Violet is showing the early stages of Asker’s Syndrome. She’s learned that women don’t ask, but rather drop hints. Sh e’ll say, “Mummy I saw yoghurt in the fridge,” rather than, “Can I have a yoghurt please?” or “Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?” rather than “Can we go to the park?”

It’s widely documented that women are less likely than men to ask f or pay rises and promotions. Instead they work hard without complaints, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and give them an award.

No doubt, many women develop Asker’s Syndrome as a defensive measure because they’ve been labeled as pushy or rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, preventing our ability to express our desires doesn’t serve us well.

It’s time to cure ourselves and our girls of Asker’s Syndrome. For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it, then women asking will become the standard of proper behavior rather than the exception.

32. According to the example of the two mothers, the author wants to indicate that______.

35. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?

A. All good things come to those who wait.

Whether it shines, rains or snows, you hope that your local mail carrier can get your parcels to you in a hurry. But that could soon be changing, as big online shopping and technology companies, including Amazon and Google, are looking up to the sky for the new mail carrier—the drone. Drones are like planes, but come in many shapes and sizes. They have no pilot and are controlled from outside the drone. They have been used in the military to attack targets or to move goods in dangerous areas recently. But now, small drones are a part of regular people’s lives. For example, drones can now be used by extreme sports fans to take selfies. But a drone delivery service could be much more successful, according to experts.

Online store Amazon wants to deliver packages weighing up to 2.3 kg to customers in just 30 minutes by using drones. It is going to build several drone stations, where packages can be loaded and flown out.

This plan could completely change our shopping experience. Soon, we could be ordering a new coat in the morning and having it delivered before we finish breakfast. Many startup companies (初创公司)around the world are also jumping at the opportunity to bring drone deliveries to our doors. A UK startup has created a delivery service for small goods. Open a smart phone app, enter your address, set a time, and pay 10 pounds. Then in minutes, a drone will fly and do tasks for you. The service, like others, is still young and has problems, but it shows that drone deliveries might be more common in the future.

Other companies have big plans for drones too. Google have been testing drones with their

“Project Wing”, which is designed to get around traffic on the ground. Drones can also carry food and water to areas damaged by earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters.

However, Google and Amazon still need government permission to fly their drones in many countries. But it may not be too long before we're waving hello to our new mail carrier in the sky.

In the Social Media Age, teenagers are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than ever before.

According to a Common Sense Media research, more than eight in ten teenagers have visited a social networking site, and three out of four teenagers now have an account on a social networking site.

Although social media sites can improve teenagers’ communication abilities, experts say that social networking could be harmful to healthy teenage self-esteem(自尊). Health educator and motivational speaker Scott Fried began working with teenagers 22 years ago. He recently developed a new lecture, Broken-Heartedness and Intimacy in the Age of Social Media, to discuss with teenagers the differences between their personalities online and their true selves.

“The definition of growing up is bringing together many different parts of your personality.” Fried said. “As you grow, they turn into one whole personality. Now, you have a personality at school, at home, and online. The goal of being a teenager is to bring together all those different parts that are shown online in a complete way.”

Fried uses the ph rase “compare and despair” to describe the bad effect of social media on teenager self-esteem. “If you compare yourself to someone else, you’re usually going to end up despairing,” Fried said. “One of the problems with social media is that we throw our bes t selves out there, or what we like to think of as our best self.”

Psychologist Nadine De Giordany says that teenagers who already have low self-esteem can easily get depressed and give others their low self-esteem. De Giordany says social media are causing more and more depression. He adds that parents should educate their children early on about social media.

“Teenagers can use many resources that affect the way they deal with peer pressure.” De

Giordany said. “As children are growing up, monitor what it is that they have access to. There is an age that social media are appropriate for and there is an age that they aren’t appropriate for.”

阅读理解训练50篇(1) 1 Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hor- mones (荷尔蒙).They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etC.In general the person feels excited and ready to act. Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.” Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 2016高考英语短文改错荟萃 第一套 Dear Ms. J. K. Rowling, It is great pleasure to write to you. I like reading all of your Harry Potter book. A few days before, I listened to a radio programme about you. Now I know that you teach English at home and in others countries before you started writing books. I also know that you could only write the first book while your baby daughter was asleep, so you worked on them for five years. That was a very much difficult job. Your son David and your daughter Jessica must be proud for you. I hope I can become as successfully as you when I grow up. Thank you for spending time read my letter. Yours sincerely, Michele 第二套 Last week, there was a program calling “Learning to Respect Our Parents” in our school. That is known to us that respect for one’s parents is one of Chinese traditional moral value. And most students nowadays are “the only child”. We often think of themselves as the centre of their family. As for the program, eight “dos” have worked out for the students to follow. For an example, we are advised to remember our parents’ birthdays. Beside this, it is necessary that we should also tell our parents what we are going to do when we go out. The program has been such successful that it has been high praised by many people. 第三套 One of my happiest childhood memories were having dinner with my parents and two sisters. As a result, found that we seldom had a chance to get together, then we decided that we would set aside three evenings the week for a sit-down dinner. First we tried setting three fixed days for our experiment—Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. After a couple of week of trying this plan, almost everyone was unhappy. For a while, the kids began to resist the idea. They said they

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解专项训练及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity. According to a government white paper, TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world. Westerners' understanding of TCM, however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage(针灸,拔罐和按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on U. S. swimmer Michael Phelps, back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. As a matter of fact, Chinese herbs play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore disheartening to know that while 103 World Health Organization member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine. TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs are made into pills, powder and soup, and the kind of herbs used, their quality and quantity, and the processing of the ingredients (原材料) jointly determine the effectiveness of the prescription. Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardization, with the chemical composition and functions of its medicines being unclear and their effects being unstable. Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs. Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescriptions handed down from the past. Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria (疟疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time. (1)Why does the author mention the example of Michael Phelps? A. Because he was injured in his swimming. B. Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. Because westerners know a little about TCM. D. Because westerners attach great importance to TCM. (2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine? A. Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Because Western medicine is more effective. D. Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. (3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 4? A. The methods of planting herbs. B. The effectiveness of prescription. C. Lacking in standardization. D. Its stable functions.

高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析

高三英语阅读理解专项训练及答案含解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 Average humans can consume 15 or more drinks in plastic bottles a month. If you were born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimum of 14,400 plastic bottles on this planet. These bottles take hundreds of years to break down into tiny pieces of plastic, never to completely disappear. Most of the waste is consumed by fish and birds, which has shortened their lifetime greatly. The Plastic Bottle Village is just a great idea that might finally save us from being buried in plastic. It's a community in Panama that is going to be made of used bottles. The design process begins with building steel frames, which are then filled with these bottles. Once this step is complete, and electrical and plumbing (管道装置) lines are put inside, the plastic walls are covered by concrete—both inside and outside. So no one will actually be able to tell that the walls are made of plastic. Besides, the material will keep the house 17°C cooler than the outside, which is the biggest benefit to people living inside. The village is the brainchild (主意) of Robert Bezeau with the intention of setting up several environmental projects. Having started a recycling program four years ago, during which a number of plastic bottles were collected, he started to think of how they could be put to use. Soon enough, he decided to use them to build houses, and came up with a basic idea for the construction process. The project hopes to make people conscious of the waste that these bottles create so that they can do more to protect the environment. The village will also create an education center that will teach individuals from the world how to reuse plastic bottles as construction materials for shelter. Recycled bottles could neutralize the negative effect of your passage on this planet, and move closer to leaving only your “footprints”. (1)What does Paragraph 1 intend to tell us? A. The reason for buying fewer drinks. B. The difficult situation of wildlife. C. The amount of plastic waste. D. The seriousness of plastic pollution. (2)What is the biggest benefit to people living in the Plastic Bottle Village? A. The house will be much cooler than normal ones. B. The material of construction will be reduced a lot. C. The newly-made house can save a lot of electricity. D. The waste of the house can be consumed by fish and birds. (3)Which of the following words can best describe Robert? A. Creative. B. Courageous. C. Enthusiastic. D. Sensitive.(4)The main purpose of Robert's projects is to A. provide shelter for locals B. reuse all deserted plastic bottles C. popularize the use of plastic bottles D. raise people's environmental awareness 【答案】(1)D (2)A

高考英语阅读理解练习题及答案及解析

高考英语阅读理解练习题及答案及解析 一、高中英语阅读理解 1.阅读理解 I was born on the 17th of November 1828, in the village of Nam Ping, which is about four miles southwest of the Portuguese Colony (殖民地) of Macao, and is located on Pedro Island lying west of Macao, from which it is separated by a channel of half a mile wide. As early as 1834, an English lady, Mrs. Gutzlaff, wife of a missionary to China, came to Macao. Supported by the Ladies' Association in London for the promotion of female education in India and the East, she immediately took up the work of starting a girls' school for Chinese girls, which was soon followed by the opening of a boys' school. Mrs. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school and it was doubtlessly through his influence and means that my father got me admitted into the school. It has always been a mystery to me why my parents should put me into a foreign school, instead of a traditional Confucian school, where my big brother was placed. Most certainly such a step would have been more suitable for Chinese public opinion, taste, and the wants of the country, than to allow me to attend an English school. Moreover, a Chinese belief is the only avenue in China that leads to political promotion, influence, power and wealth. I can only guess that as foreign communication with China was just beginning to grow, my parents hoped that it might be worthwhile to put one of their sons to learning English. In this way he might become an interpreter and have a more advantageous position to enter the business and diplomatic world. I am wondering if that influenced my parents to put me into Mrs. Gutzlaff's School. As to what other sequences it has eventually brought about in my later life, they were entirely left in the hands of God. (1)How was the author admitted to Mrs. Gutzlaff's school? A. Through his father's friend's help. B. Through his own efforts to exams. C. Through his father's request. D. Through Mrs. Gutzlaff's influence. (2)Why did the author's parents put him into an English school? A. An English school was more influential. B. Foreign trade with China was developing fast. C. It met with Chinese public opinion. D. He could become a successful interpreter. (3)What did the author think of his parents' decision to put him into an English school? A. It was skeptical. B. It was mysterious. C. It was thoughtful. Gutzlaff's comprador(买办) happened to come from my village and was actually my father's friend and neighbor. It was through him that my parents heard about Mrs. Gutzlaff's school”可知,作者是通过父亲朋友的帮助进入到Mrs.
