二、阅读理解(本题共30个小题,每小题3分)
1. Australia is nearly as large as the United States, but most of it is too dry for people to live in. Around this dry part are large sheep and cow farms. A few of them are as large as the smallest states in America. Often the nearest neighbors are several hundred kilometers away.
The two-way radio is very important to people who live on these great Australian farms. It works much like a telephone. A person can listen to someone else talk and then give an answer. For example, people on the large farms could talk to a doctor far away. They could tell the doctor about someone who was ill, and the doctor could let them know how to look after the sick person.
As the large farms were so far from towns, the children could not go to school. Radio schools were started for them in some places. At a certain time each day, boys and girls turn on their radios and listen to teachers in cities far away.
Families on the large farms wanted to give news to their neighbors. The program "Round Robin" talks by radio was started to keep families in touch with each other. They could talk about who was going away and who was ill. The men could talk about their sheep and cows and how much money the markets would pay for them. In many ways the radio became a newspaper for the farm people of Australia.

2. Today the official language of the United States and most of Canada is English. However, French almost became the official language because of a war.
The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of
the French.
France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States. However, France tried to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French build a fort on the Ohio River, the residents in Virginia sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1725. However, the French defeated Washington.
The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted the English and won many early battles. Later, the British began to do well against the French. In the final battle in Quebec, Canada, General Wolfe of England faced General Montcalm from France. Both generals died in this battle, but the English outlasted the French and won the battle. Thus, most of North America today has the English culture and language.

3.You have been badly injured in a car accident. It is necessary to give you a blood transfusion. However, special care must be taken in selecting new blood for you. If the blood is too different from your own, the transfusion could kill you.
There are four basic types of blood: A, B, AB and O. A simple test can show a person's blood type. Everybody is born with one of these four types of blood. Blood type, like hair color and height, is inherited from parents.
Because of substances contained in each in each type, the four groups must be transfused carefully. Basically, A and B cannot be mixed. A and B cannot receive AB, but AB may receive A or B. O can be given to any other group; hence, it is often called the universal giver. For the opposite reason, AB is sometimes called the universal receiver. However, because so many reactions can happen in transfusions, patients usually receive only salt or plasma until their blood can be matched as exactly as possible in the blood bank of a hospital. In this way, it is possible to avoid any bad reactions to the transfusion.
There is a relationship between your blood type and your nationality. Among Europeans and people of European ancestry, about 42 percent have type A while 45 percent have type O. The rarest is
type AB. Other races have different percentages. For example, some American Indian groups have nearly 100 percent type O.

4.Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you're "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people, the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: "Get up, John.
You'll be late for work again." The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles means, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Dr Kleitman believes that habit can help. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before at your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.
1. According to the writer, if a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably.

B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle
C. he is not sure when his energy is low
D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

3. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should .
A. change his energy cycle

Often all the women and girls in the family bathed together. Then the men and boys did. In most families this was Saturday night because Sundays they went to church.
