Going Abroad for Holidays

Traveling abroad has become the top choice of many people when it comes to holiday planning. And many more people are trying every means to save for realizing their dream of traveling abroad to spend a holiday in a faraway quaint land.

There are several advantages of having a holiday abroad. First of all, you can learn more of the geography, customs, culture, and lifestyle of different nations and countries. You can make more friends and experience a new life somewhat strange to you. Also, you can practice your foreign language proficiency. In addition, you can visit a unique place or places which are known for their special adventures and interests, such as scuba diving or wildlife observing.

However, traveling abroad has disadvantages, too. Although you may enjoy beautiful sightseeing and nice climate, you may catch a local illness that is unusual in your native land. While traveling worldwide, you may not be able to speak the local languages and it will be difficult for you to communicate with the local residents. What’s more, you may even find customs hostile to you, for example, strong discrimination against women.

Good or bad, traveling abroad for holidays is my first choice. Why? The answer is simple: the outside world is thrilling!

Advantage of Being a Teacher

I come from a family of teachers. My father was a teacher, my sister is a teacher, and I am a teacher. What do we all find satisfying about this profession?

Well for one thing, I consider myself not only a teacher, but also a learner. Being a teacher allows me, in fact forces me, to be a learner. I must find interesting articles or books for my students to read and write about. I must read and react to these books and articles myself in order to have something to share with my students. I must find ways of helping my students understand their assignments. I must then try to understand and respond in a helpful way to my students’ ideas. Teaching is also a “people job”. It involves interacting with students and helping them to interact with each other. I suppose it doesn’t have to this way; a teacher can deliver a lecture and do nothing to find out whether anyone has understood what he said. But I question whether this is really teaching. A real teacher will make his ideas alive, and will awaken ideas in the minds of his students. In the process, he will benefit by getting to know his students as people—their past, their present, their ways of feeling and of thinking.

In sum, there is a great deal one can get out of being a teacher. I suppose not all teachers get all that they can out of their profession. Some may get very little. But for those who are suited by temperament to be teachers, it is a perfect job.

To Live a Moral Life

A moral life involves service to family, nation and the world. Morality, as we are told, requires us to fulfill our responsibilities to others.

In order to do this, we must first fulfill our responsibilities to ourselves. One of these responsibilities is to take care of our bodies. Health is a most important asset. Without it, we may have to depend on others instead of being able to help them. The other is to pay attention in school and work hard to learn. A well-educated person is more likely to get a good job. One who cannot earn money certainly cannot support a family. An ignorant person cannot contribute wisdom to society.

Another most important responsibility is to develop a concern for others. A person who is selfish is not well liked. He usually does not work well with others for the good of society. As the knowledge and skills become so much specialized that the best contribution to the world normally come with the cooperation among many individuals. A self-centered person could rarely make any contributions. On the other hand, one who had a concern for people is willing to contribute his time and effort and cooperate with others to improve the society and he or she is more likely to be successful.

Is Stress a Bad Thing?

“I can’t stand the pressure and competition,” explained one friend of mine when asked why he decided to quit his highly-paid but demanding position in his company recently. My friend may have his own reasons, but I don’t think his decision is wise in reality.

It is true that my friend’s case is not unique. In the last few years quite a number of men and women have chosen to do something less competitive at the cost of a comfortable, easy life a

highly-paid job can obtain. They are afraid that the stresses and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally. In fact, however, stress isn’t the bad thing as it is often supposed to be. Unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and challenge, and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless, idle life. People who are under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth — the very aim of a human life.

Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. What we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.

It Pays to Be Honest

Although honesty is believed to be a virtue, there are still dishonest people in our society. For example, some businessmen sell fake products to the consumers; some students cheat in the exams.

Dishonest people are short-sighted. Those who sell fake products may make money at first, but consumers won’t buy their products a second time. As a result, they will lose respect and trust from others or even be sent to prison. Dishonest students may earn a high mark in the exam, but they don’t master the knowledge they are expected to learn and they are only fooling themselves. In contrast, honest people are rewarded for their credibility. Those who always tell the truth or keep to their promise are not only trustworthy but also gain respect from others. They are sure to have a lot of good friends because they are reliable and respectable. Besides, it is easier for those with a good track record to land a good job because every boss wants his employee to be honest.

Generally speaking, honesty is always the best policy. It pays to be honest because honest people enjoy trust, respect and honor.

口语大英四答案

Unit 1 Men and women’s prejudices Part I Read the following passage aloud. The very language we use to discuss men’s roles (i.e., deadbeat dads) shows a lack of appreciation for the majority of men who quietly yet proudly fulfill their family responsibilities. We almost never hear the term “working father,” and it is rare that calls for more workplace flexibility are considered to be for men as much as for women. Our society acts as if family obligations are not as important to fathers as they are to mothers —as if career satisfaction is what a man’s life is all about. Even more insulting is the recent media trend of regarding at-home wives as “status symbols” — like an expensive car — flaunted by the supposedly few men who can afford such a luxury. The implication is that men with at-home wives have it easier than those whose wives work outside the home because they have the “luxury” of a full-time housekeeper. In reality, however, the men who are the sole wage earners for their families suffer a lot of stresses. The loss of a job — or even the threat of that happening — is obviously much more difficult when that job is the sole source of income for a family. By the same token, sole wage earners have less flexibility when it comes to leaving unsatisfying careers because of the loss of income such a job change entails. In addition, many husbands work overtime or second jobs to make more money needed for their families. For these men, it is the family that the job supports that makes it all worthwhile. It is the belief that having a mother at home is important to the children, which makes so many men gladly take on the burden of being a sole wage earner. Part II. TOPIC Men and women’s prejudices Section One Each of the students will be asked one qu estion on the topic “Men and women’s prejudices and roles”. 1.What’s the division of labor like in your family? In my family, my father is responsible for the heavy and tired work like clean drain, garage, etc., the mother is responsible for some of the common household chores, such as cooking, washing clothes, cleaning, etc.I am responsible for helping my mother to do the housework, so dad is hard and tired. 1.Many people hold the view that men are different from women in many ways. What’s your opinion about it? Men and women are different. In the relationship, for example, men are more rational, while women are more emotional. And because the body structure is different, the responsibility of the men and women is different also, men generally responsible for the breadwinner, women generally responsible for providing a comfortable home. 1.How to be a good father?

So it’s not necessary for universities to provide more scholarships. 3.Which is more important in your college life, study or working experience? Why? In my opinion, we students should put study in the first place. Only by learning enough knowledge and skills now can we get a good job in the future. Our main task is to lay a solid(可靠的;坚实的) foundation for the future. So, it’s out of question that study is more important in college life. 4.If you had the opportunity to further your study in famous universities either at home or abroad, which would you choose? Why? We should respect our university, the last place from where we get system education. So, my aim for college life is to learn as much as I can. 6.Do you think having a part-time job might affect your academic performance? Why or why not? Personally I think it will. It’s certain that taking a part-time job will occupy some study time. Study is not just doing homework. It requires many practices. Having a part-time job may affect our further study and our academic performance. Section Two Please have a group discussion on the following topic: What can make a university famous?
