innovation, the elixir ( 灵丹妙药 ) of progress, has always cost people their jobs. in the industrial revolution hand weavers

were ___36___ aside by the mechanical loom. over the past 30

years the digital revolution has ___37___ many of the mid-skill

jobs that underpinned 20th-century middle-class life. typists, ticketagents, bank tellers and many production-line jobs have

been dispensed with, just as the weavers were.

for those who believe that technological progress has made

the world a better place, such disruption is a natural part of

rising ___38___. although innovation kills some jobs, it creates

new and better ones, as a more ___39___ society becomes

richer and its wealthier inhabitants demand more goods and services. a hundred years ago one in three american workers

was ___40___ on a farm. today less than 2% of them produce

far more food. the millions freed from the land were not

rendered ___41___, but found better-paid work as the economy

grew more sophisticated. today the pool of secretaries

has___42___, but there are ever more computer programmers

and web designers.

optimism remains the right starting-point, but for workers the dislocating effects of technology may make themselves

evident faster than its ___43___. even if new jobs and

wonderful products emerge, in the short term income gaps

will widen, causing huge social dislocation and perhaps even

changing politics. technologys ___44___ will feel like a tornado

(旋风 ), hitting the rich world first, but ___45___ sweeping

through poorer countries too. no government is prepared for it.

passage two

questions 61-65 are based on the following passage.

some of the world ’s most significant problems never hit headlines.one example comes from agriculture. food riots and hunger make news. but the trend lying behind these matters is

rarely talked about. this is the decline in the growth in yields of

some of the world ’ s major crops.a new study by the university of minnesota and mcgill university in montreal looks at where,

and how far, this decline is occurring.

the authors take a vast number of data points for the four

most important crops: rice, wheat corn and soybeans( 大豆 ). they find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas,

the improvement in yields that tood place before the

1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2000s.

there are two worrying features of the slowdown. one is that it

has been particularly sharp in the world ’ s most populous(人口多的 ) countries, india and china. their ability to feed

themselves has been an important source of relative stability

both within the countries and on world food markets. that

self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue

to slow down or reverse.

second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in

corn and soyabeans. this is problematic because wheat and

rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of

all calories consumed. corn and soyabeans are more important

as feed grains. the authors note that“ we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and

cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of

food s ecurity in much of the world.”

the report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another

new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig

up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people

in 2050, as the food and agriculture organisation has argued.

instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land

currently ploughted up for crops might be able to revert( 回

返)to forest or wilderness. this could happen. the trouble is

that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields,

which may not actually happen.

63.what does the new study by the two universities say about recent crop improvement efforts?

a)they fail to produce the same remarkable results as before the 1980s.

crops will be reversed.

prosperity n.

displaced adj.

responsive adj.

sentiment n.

shrunk v.收缩

swept v.扫除

withdrawn n.

productive adj.

36.in the industrial revolution, hand weavers were ____aside

by the mechanical loom.

w:professor henderson could you give us a brief overview of what you do, where you work and your main area of research? m:well the center for climate research where i work links

the science of climate change to issues around economics

and policy.

some of our research is to do with the likely impacts

of climate change and all of the associated risks.

w:and how strong is the evidence that climate change is happening that its really something we need to be worried about.

m:well most of the science of climate change particularly that to do with global warming is simply fact.

but other aspects of the science are less certain or at least more disputed.

and so were really talking about risk what the economics tells us is that its probably cheaper to avoid climate change to avoid the risk than it has to deal with the likely consequences. w: so what are we doing? what can we do about it?

m:well i would argue that we need to develop the science specifically to understand the likely impacts of climate change in different contexts.

as i said we need to understand the best ways of avoiding climate change and this will involve a huge transition to low carbon energy systems and the transition is a tremendous priority.

and for this to happen, we may need action on a global scale from a political perspective.

we need to understand the terms on which major countries like china and the usa might sign up to a global agreement because at the moment we dont have that consensus.

w: right.

m:and we also need to plan ahead so that were in a position to deal with the likely levels of climate change which are

already inevitable and even more so to for the levels that

are likely if we dont get those global agreements.

For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition . You should write at least 100 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below: ) 第1题 Number of people in City X traveling abroad in 1995, 2000 and 2005 1. 这种现象可能产生的影响 Traveling Abroad 【正确答案】: [参考范文] Traveling Abroad The diagram shows the numbers of people in City X traveling abroad in 1995, 2000 and 2005. As indicated in the table, in 1995, about 10,000 people in the city went sightseeing abroad. Five years later, in the year of 2000, the number increased greatly to 40,000. Another five years later, in 2005, the number dramatically tripled, reaching a surprising peak of more than 120,000. We can see clearly more and more people traveling abroad in the last ten years. One reason for this drastic increase can be attributed to the booming of Chinese economy in these years, which has significantly raised the income of the people. With more savings in their bank accounts, people no longer regard traveling abroad as a luxury which they could hardly afford before. This may also be due to the rapid development in the social culture in China, which have greatly broaded the horizons of the Chinese people and have made them more interested in the outside world. Indeed, few people now can resist the temptation of the sunlight in Thailand, the mysteries in Egypt and the beaches in Australia.

For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Passage One Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In 1985 when a Japan Air Lines (JAL) jet crashed, its president, Yasumoto Takagi, called each victim’s family to apologize, and then promptly resigned. And in 1987, when a subsidiary of Toshiba sole sensitive military technology to the former Soviet Union, the chairman of Toshiba gave up his post. These executive actions, which Toshiba calls “the highest form of apology,”may seem bizarre to US managers. No one at Boeing resigned after the JAL crash, which may have been caused by a faulty Boeing repair. The difference between the two business cultures centers around different definitions of delegation. While US executives give both responsibility and authority to their employees, Japanese executives delegate only authority—the responsibility is still theirs. Although the subsidiary that sold the sensitive technology to the Soviets had its own management, the Toshiba top executives said they “must take personal responsibility for not creating an atmosphere throughout the Toshiba group that would make such activity unthinkable, even in an independently run subsidiary.” Such acceptance of community responsibility is not unique to businesses in Japan. School principals in Japan have resigned when their students committed major crimes after school hours. Even if they do not quit, Japanese executives will often accept primary responsibility in other ways, such as taking the first pay cut when a company gets into financial trouble. Such personal sacrifices, even if they are largely symbolic, help to create the sense of community and employee loyalty that is crucial to the Japanese way of doing business. Harvard Business School professor George Lodge calls the ritual acceptance of blame “almost a feudal (封建的) way of purging (清除) the community of dishonor,”and to some in the United States, such resignations look cowardly. However, in an era in which both business and governmental leaders seem particularly good at evading responsibility, many US managers would probably welcome an infusion (灌输) of the Japanese sense of responsibility, If, for instance,
