Wind is one of our clea nest and richest power sources (来源), as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows that windmil ls (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh cent ury BC. They were first introduced to Europe during the 1100s , when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of using wind power. For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump water from deep underground. W hen electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by th e1940s when electricity was available to people in almost all a reas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned abo ut the pollution that is created when coal and gas are burned t o produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of c oal and gas would not last forever. Then, wind was rediscover ed, though it means higher costs. Today, there is a global mo vement to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind. From the text we know that windmills ________.A. were invented by European armiesB. used to supply power to radio in remote areasC. have a history of more than 2,800 yearsD. have rarely been used since electricity was discoveredWhat was a new use for wind power in the late 19th century? _______A. I loved the countryside and the pubs, and I loved London. I’ve slightly changed my mi nd after seventeen years because I think it’s an ugly town no w.Things have changed. For everybody, England meant gentl emen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unf ortunately, and so are the gentlemanly attitudes and good ma nners---people shut doors heavily to your face and politeness is disap pearing.I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. Y ou’re forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more, to re staurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has t o be in a pub, and it can be difficult to go there alone as a wo man. The cafes are not terribly nice.As a woman, I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb(大量的钱)on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p. m. Iused to use it, but now I’m afraid. The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that’s typicall y French. In Middle sex I had a neighbor who is 82 now. His f amily only lived two miles away, but I took him to France for C hristmas once because he was always alone.13. The writer doesn’t like London because she______.A. prefers to live in an old-fashioned houseB. has lived there for seventeen yearsC. is not used to the life there nowD. has to be polite to everyone she meets there14. Some 105,000 dogs were rounde d up by local government last year because they had been ab andoned, many of them shortly after the festival season. The main reason given by owners for handing their dogs over to the Dogs Trust is that the dogs need more attention than th ey can give; behavioral problems and moving home are also reasons given. But Eleanor Silk, the Trust’s communications director, says, “I t’s often four or five months after Christmas, in early summer, when owners find that the dog has got too big and too active, or it hasn’t been trained properly and has caused damage aro und the home.”In any case, some organizations that help pets are quick to po int out that if you are serious about getting a puppy(小狗) as a pet, Christmas is not the time to do it. Puppies need t o get used to their new surroundings, to be introduced to a ro utine, and to be looked after like small children. It’s hard to me et any of these needs at Christmas. What’s more, pulling a pu ppy out of a Christmas stocking in itself sends the wrong mes sage to children. It encourages children to think of the puppy as a toy, rather than a responsibility.Appreciating what you’re taking on with a dog can be a seriou s realization. “For life” means thinking about the effect they’ll h ave on your life. It also infers you will need to care for the dog for its whole life.1.What would be the best title for the passage?A. Dogs and Cats—the Most Popular Christmas Gifts.B. A pet is for Life, Not just for Christmas.C. How to Take Care of Your Pets over Christmas.D. Let’s Help Those Abandoned Pets.2. The underlined words “round ed up” in Paragraph 2 mean “_ _______”.A. given out as giftsB. thrown awayC. gathered into one placeD. raised to ma ke money3. The fifth paragraph mainly tells us________.A. how to take best care of Christmas petsB. the right time to have a puppy as a petC. the reasons why Christmas is not the time to get a petD. the worries about Christmas pets from organizations that help pets4. Why is the author against the idea of putting a dog in the C hristmas stocking as a Christmas gift?A. Because these dogs can still cause damage.B. Because children will not take dogs seriously.C. Because children don’t like to have dogs as Christmas gift s.D. Because a Christmas stocking is not big enough to put a dog in.BMark Twain was a great writer. He was from the . He was bor n in 1835. Others have smart d esigns. An example of the second type of house won the Awa rd of Excellence from the American Institute of Architects.Located on the shore of Sullivan’s Island off the coast of Sout h Carolina, the award-winning cube-shaped beach house was built to replace one damaged by Hu rricane Hugo years ago. In September 1989, Hugo struck Sou th Carolina, killing 18 people and damaging or destroying 36,0 00 homes in the state. Before Hugo, many new houses built along South Carolina’s s horeline were poorly constructed, according to architect Ray Huff, who created the cleverly-designed beach house. Now all new shoreline houses are req uired to meet stricter, better-enforced codes. The new beach house on Sullivan’s Island sh ould be strong enough not to be damaged by a Category 3 hu rricane with peak winds of 179 to 209 kilometres per hour.At first sight, the house on Sullivan’s Island looks anything but hurricane-proof. Its redwood shell makes it look like “a large party lanter n” at night. But looks can be deceiving. The house’s wooden f rame is strengthened with long steel rods(杆) to give it extra st rength. To further protect the house from hurricane damage, Huff rais ed it 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings(木桩) buried deep in the sand. Pilings might appear insecure, but they are strong enough to support the weight of the house. T hey also raise the house above storm waves. The pilings allo w the waves to run under the house instead of running into it. “The waves of water come ashore at tremendous speeds and cause most of the damage done to beach-front build ings,” said Huff.Huff designed the timber pilings to be partially concealed(隐藏) by the house’s ground-to-roof shell. “The shell masks the pilings so that the house does n’t look like it’s standing with its legs pulled up,” said Huff. In t he event of storm, the shell should break apart and let the wa ves rush under the house, the architect explained.12. After Hurricane Hugo, new houses built along South Carol ina’s shore line are required to .A. be easily pulled downB. look smarter in designC. meet stricter building standardsD. be designed to be c ube-shaped13. The award-winning beach house is quite strong because .A. it is strengthened by steel rodsB. it is made of redw oodC. it is in the shape of a shellD. it is built with timber and concrete14. Huff raised the house 2.7 meters off the ground on timber pilings in order to .A. avoid peak winds of about 200 km/hB. bury stronger pili ngs deep in the sandC. break huge sea waves into smaller oneD. prevent the w aves from running into it15. More often the doctors can’t fix the damage. Sometimes, they are afraid to try something to help because it is dangerous to work on the brain. The doctors might make the person worse if he operates on the brain.Dr. Robert White, a famous professor and doctor, thinks he knows a way to help. He thinks doctors should make the brain very cold. If it is very cold, the brain can live without blood for 30 minutes. This gives the doctor a longer time to do something for the brain.Dr. White tried his idea on 13 monkeys. First he taught them to do different jobs, then he operated on them. He made the monkeys’ blood go through a machine. The machine cooled the blood. Then the machine sent the blood back to the monkeys’ brains. When the brain’s temperature was 10℃, Dr. White stopped the blood to the brain. After 30 minutes he turned the blood back on. He warmed the blood again. After their operations the monkeys were like what they had been before. They were healthy and busy. Each one could still do the jobs the doctor had taught them.4. Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very nature for the boys and girls to make friends with each other. We should make as many friends as possible. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it, but it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge—hunger. For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the frustration someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience. With the help of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia. My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.12. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?A. Before being accepted by a college scholarship program, the author .A. had lived with his relatives happilyB. had won his degree in a universityC. had been struggling financiallyD. had lost hope of facing the future15. Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.Birds, especially seagulls(海鸥)are very fond of locusts(蝗虫), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe(成熟的), locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves, bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They areusually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks(树皮) of trees. An even more strange act remains to be noticed. AI have a neighbour we call Happy. I have never seen her angry at anything and never heard her saya harsh(难听的) word to anyone or about anyone.Happy and her husband Ben, 70, have a huge garden. They spent many happy hours together working on it. Most of the neighbours watched interestingly as Ben doubled the size of their garden. As the cost of food climbed faster than Ben's beans, we all wished we also had such a large garden. As the rest of us spent our dollars at the market, Happy could be seen picking beans in her backyard.Last month, Happy and Ben invited most of the neighbourhood over for an “allday food fest”. We were told to bring gloves and arrive very early in the morning. We didn't know what was about to take place.By 9:00 am, there were nine of us in the garden picking tomatoes, beans, okra and squash. By 10:00 am, there was lots of laughter. We shared a lot of stories. By 5:00 pm, everyone was a little drunk from the wine and beer. After dinner, we played games. As we were leaving, Happy and Ben handed each of us a shopping bag filled with the bounty(大量给予之物) of the day, already packaged and frozen. What a delightful gift!Well, the point wasn't so much about the food. The true gift was a day of friends enjoying one another's company. None of it would have happened if it had not been for Happy and Ben's garden. Now they have a blog about gardening in case we decide to plant a garden. And I am so proud of my tomato plants!21. We can infer that Happy and her husband Ben________.A. are a generous and warmhearted coupleB. sometimes quarrel with each otherC. live on the food they grow in their gardenD. don't like spending time with others22.According to Paragraph 2, people wished they also had a garden so that ________.A. they didn't have to spend so much money on foodB. they could grow vegetables and sell them at the marketC. they could invite their neighbours and hold parties in itD. they could spend happy hours together with their families in it23. For what purpose did Happy and Ben invite the neighbours to their garden?A. To ask them to attend a birthday party.B. To help them get to know each other.C.
