Chinese colleges have come up with an unusual way to help freshmen settle in. They turn their gyms into campsites for moms and dads, some of whom have traveled thousands of miles across the country, to say goodbye.

For the past five years, Tianjin University in northern China has provided free accommodation for parents in what it calls “tents of love”. Other schools let parents sleep on mats in school gymnasiums.

“Going to college is a life moment and my parents didn’t want to miss that,” said Zhang Jinqi, a freshman at Tianjin University majoring in applied chemistry. His parents traveled with him on the 19-hour train journey from Jiangxi province in southern China.

Images of school gyms packed with parents have been widely shared on Chinese social media, prompting a debate on whether China’s only children are too coddled(悉心照料).

Some have voiced criticism of Tianjin University, saying that they think both the parents and the children should be more independent.

Xiong Bingqi, the deputy director of think-tank 21st Century Education Research Institute, thinks the problem is overstated. “It has always been a problem in China that at the start of every school year, colleges are packed with parents who come along to drop off their children and stay with them,” he said. “For some families, it’s their way to celebrate the first-ever family member who’s able to go to college,” Xiong added. “There’s nothing wrong with sharing the happiness.”

Zhang’s father said the decision to escort (护送) their son was a no-brainer. He and his wife are among the many “campers” who sleep in the 550 temporary tents set up in the Tianjin University gym.

“My child has lots of luggage and we also want to go travel,” said his father Zhang Yonghui. “The hotels nearby are fully booked so I had to sleep in the tents.”

Their son also shrugged off the criticism although he said he was looking forward to living on his own for the first time. “Being accompanied by my parents doesn’t mean I’m spoiled.”

21. Zhang Jinqi thought his parents accompanied him to his university mainly because _____.

A. they wanted to help him with his luggage

B. they wanted to go to travel in Tianjin

C. they doubted his independence

D. they wanted to witness his important life moment

22. Xiong Bingqi thinks going to college with parents’ company ______.

A. is a chance for freshmen to travel with their parents

B. is not such a serious problem as people think

C. is not good for the freshmen to build up their independence

D. is a long-lasting problem to be solved

23. The underlined phrase “shrugged off” probably means_________.

A. thought nothing of

B. was ashamed of

C. was in favor of

D. was concerned about

24. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. “Tents of love” is widely criticized.

B. Chinese only children are too spoiled.

C. There are different opinions on “tents of love”.

D. Chinese college education is faced with a big challenge.

For grown-ups, an afternoon snooze(打盹) is often easier said than done. But many of us have probably experienced just how simple it can be to catch some sleep in a gently rocking hammock(吊床). By examining brain waves in sleeping adults, researchers reported in the June 21 issue of Current Biology, a Cell Press publication, that they now have evidence to explain why that is.

“It is a common belief that rocking causes sleep: we fall asleep in a rocking chair soon and, since anc ient times, we cradle our babies to sleep,” said Sophie Schwartz of the University of Geneva. “Yet, how this works had remained a mystery. The goal of our study was made up of two parts: to test whether rocking does indeed improve sleep, and to understand how this might work at the brain level.”

Schwartz, Michel Mühlethaler, and their colleagues Laurence Bayer and Irina Constantinescu asked twelve adult volunteers to nap on a custom-made bed or “experimental hammock” that could either remain still or rock gently. All participants were good sleepers who didn’t typically nap and did not suffer from excessive sleepiness during the day. Each participant took two 45-minute afternoon naps, one with the bed still and one with the bed in motion, while their brain activity was monitored.

“We observed a faster transition to sleep in each and every subject in the swinging condition,” Mühlethaler said. “Surprisingly, we also observed a dramatic boosting of certain types of sleep-related brain waves.”

More specifically, rocking increased the length of stage N2 sleep, a form of non-rapid eye movement sleep that normally occupies about half of a good night’s sleep. The rocking bed also had a lasting effect on brain activity, increasing slow brain waves and bursts of activity known as sleep spindles(纺锤体).

Schwartz and Mühlethaler say the next step is to find out whether rocking can improve longer periods of sleep and to find out whether it may be useful for the treatment of sleep disorders, such as insomnia.

28. What does the June 21 issue of Current Biology tell us according to Paragraph 1?

A. It is more difficult for grown-ups to fall asleep.

B. People today like to sleep in a rocking hammock.

C. Many people nowadays suffer from excessive sleepiness.

D. There comes the evidence to explain why rocking benefits people’s sleep.

29. What can we learn from Sophie Schwartz’s words?

A. Her team aimed to answer two questions.

B. The study is going to benefit babies a lot.

C. The study had been kept secret before finished.

D. People used to believe rocking was bad for sleep.

30. What finding was beyond the researchers’ expectation?

A. Some participants couldn’t fall asleep in the swinging condition.

B. All the participants fell asleep faster in the swinging condition.

C. The rocking seemed to improve participants’ sleep quality.

D. Participants had a tendency to sleep excessively in the swinging bed.

31. What do Schwartz and Mühlethaler expect to figure out in the next research?

A. Whether swing can extend sleep time.

B. Whether swing can cause insomnia.

C. Whether swing can change brain waves.

D. Whether swing can benefit memory consolidation.

D

Given that motivation is so central to our lives, what do we truly understand about how it operates and about its role in our lives? The assumption is that it’s driven by a positive, external(外部的) reward. Do this, get that. But the story is much more complex.

One of the most striking aspects of motivation is that it often drives us to achievements that are difficult, challenging and even painful. You may think that you would be happy to spend all your time sitting on a white-sand beach drinking and that as long as you get to fill your days this way, you would be happy for ever. But while a few days of enjoyment might be fun from time to time, I can’t imagine that you would be satisfied by spending your days, weeks, months, years and even your life this way.

Research that examines the differences between meaning and happiness finds that the things that give us a sense of meaning don’t necessarily make us happy. Moreover, people who report having meaningful lives are often more interested in doing things for others, while those who focus mostly on doing things for themselves report being only superficially(表面上) happy. The essential quality of “meaning” has to do with having a sense of being involved in something bigger than the self.

We all know people obtain a great sense of meaning even in the most unpleasant of circumstances. Many volunteers spend portions of their lives working in dangerous, war-torn areas trying to keep disease and death from innocent civilians or teaching orphans to read. Their pain is real; their sense of doing something truly meaningful is substantial (丰富的). They show how our deep-rooted desire to believe that our lives have purpose beyond our lifespan drives us to work extra hard, even to the point of our own personal suffering, in order to gain more meaning.

The point is that these seemingly odd and irrational(无理性的)motivations get us to do things that are complex, difficult and unpleasant. But they go beyond helping people in need. They motivate us in every aspect of our lives — whether in our personal relationships, in our individual pursuits or in the workplace.

32. According to the author, which of the following about motivation is true?

A. Motivation is simply driven by external rewards.

B. Motivation is largely determined by social responsibilities.

C. Motivation enables us to gain more financial returns.

D. Motivation drives us to struggle for achievements.

33. According to the research, which of the practices gives us a sense of meaning?

A. Reading a classic novel in the leisure time.

B. Enjoying sunshine and comfort on the beach.

C. Accompanying terminal patients in hospital.

D. Listening to popular music in the sitting room.

34. The example of people’s voluntary work in Para. 4 mainly indicates that ______.

A. experiencing personal suffering is a necessary part of our growth

B. voluntary work serves the purpose of adding happiness to our lives

C. it’s our duty to help people in need to get out of their sufferings

D. life’s great rewards come from our expe rience of tough circumstances

35. What can we infer from the passage?

A. People should make sacrifices for social benefits due to their short lifespan.

B. The value and impact of motivation goes beyond our social circle and existence.

C. Helping people in need is the most important goal of a human being nowadays.

D. Superficially happy people usually put others first rather than focus on themselves.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分。)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

If you have ever been in a school play or even made believe you were a doctor, detective, or a space traveler, you know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of someone or something else. 36

In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B.C., trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and makeup at harvest festivals. 37 To the dance was gradually added pantomime(哑剧) -- the imitation of movements and gestures as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants (圣歌), and finally the use of dialogue.

While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in the western world, in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a highly specialized art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom. 38

Modern acting, by contrast, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are known worldwide. 39 A special form of acting takes place in radio drama, which was highly popular before television. In radio drama the actors face an unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience. So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.

40 Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year. Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged. Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.

A. It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.

B. Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to fame and riches.

C. Consequently, they had little opportunity to demonstrate their individual personalities.

D. The origins of acting are in the act of remembering.

E. Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus(酒神).

F. Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.

G. Broadway and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talent.

A survey basing on 1,000 students found that 80% of senior students sleeps less than nine hours every night. Too many homework given by school teachers and parents is the main reasons. Another reason lies in students’ bad habits. Some studen ts, for example, are absent-minded while doing his homework, and some wasting their after-class time. The third cause is because some students have to get up early on weekdays to get to school far away from home. Experts are calling at schools and parents to cut down on the amount of homework and students should make the good use of their spare time. Only this way can the students improve their study efficiency.
