Recently, I found an old photo of my grandfather and me, taken in our garden in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. It reminded me of many memories of Grandfather. Throughout the summer he would spend whole days out in the garden, looking after his crops in the morning and sitting in the shade of a big tree in the afternoon. He always kept his watch on outside and took it off in the evening.

Grandfather always had a project going and would be in a great panic until it was done. He would start the job straight away and not rest until it was finished, and wouldn‘t let any helpers rest either. Nothing ever piled up(堆积) with him.

When he had visitors, after a few hours he would start looking at his watch and tell them exactly when their bus was due. He had many timetables in his mind. Clock-changing time in our house was a major event for Grandfather. He would warn us days ahead and then change them the day before, throwing the house into confusion.

Grandfather worked hard all his life. He came to England from India in 1954 and worked long hours in a steel factory. He loved to tell us of his successes at work there, such as becoming a foreman(领班), his pay rising to £2 a week, the respect he had from colleagues and so on. While he was working there, he shared a house with other men who had also left their families in India and come to work in England. He told us the beds were constantly slept in –the night-shift workers in the day and the day shifters at night.

It is now ten years since he died. It doesn‘t feel like he has been gone this long—having these memories of him is like having a secret box of treasure. Grandfather still makes and will forever make me smile.

For many blind people , computers are inaccessible(不可及的). It can cost $1,000 to buy ―screen reader‖ software(软件), but two blind computer programmers from Australia have solved this problem.

Queensland University of Technology(QUT)graduate James Teh and business partner Michael Curran developed a free, open-source program, called NVDA, which provides a voice to read the words on a computer screen as the cursor(光标) moves over them. NVDA won the blind inventors an award in the grand final program of the ABC‘s New Inventors, which aired on September 23. They took home the award for an invention that ―might make a real difference to people‘s lives or the environment.‖

―A sighted person takes for granted that they can sit down at any computer and use it,‖ Mr Teh said. ―We really are in the information age — everything is online these days. So access to computers for the blind is very important, which is why we wanted our software to be free . ‖Mr Teh, who majored in software engineering at QUT, said blind students typically didn‘t have the money to buy ―screen reader‖ technology, at the time in their life when they most needed it. Now NVDA could be downloaded on to anyone‘s personal computer free of charge.

―It can also be copied to a USB stick, which can be used on any PC at school or university, with no installation(安装)required, ‖ he said.

Mr Teh and Mr Curran have drawn on their own experience as blind computer users to develop a product which has some unique features. For example, as the mouse moves up and down the screen, a sound becomes higher and lower to let you know where the cursor is located.

NVDA has been translated into 27 languages, thanks to volunteer translators. To date, there have been over 50, 000 downloads.

Mr Teh and Mr Curran have been working on the project since 2006. They worked on their product without any pay for two years. When Mozilla offered some funding in 2008, Mr The was able to quit his day job and work full-time developing NVDA.

At just six years old, Joey Kilpatrick is Australia‘s unofficial hide-and-seek champion after he hid in a bedroom cupboard for eight hours while playing his favourite game, causing a massive rescue operation.

The determined little boy‘s disappearing act led to a full-scale search, including nine police officers, five State Emergency Service volunteers, tracker dogs and almost all of the residents(居民) of the town of Goombungee.

But there was no sign of her little boy. Within minutes of Chris calling the authorities, the police started one of the biggest ground searches in the town‘s history.

―I was really scared. I rang my husband, Kris, who works out of town, and he immediately hit the road, calling me every 10 minutes, ‖ Chris recalls. ―They searched the house from top to bottom; everyone was out looking for him. When a neighbour asked if I‘d checked the water tank, that‘s when reality hit. I was terrified.‖

After hours of searching the town, confused police decided to search the house one more time.

Senior constable(巡警), Chris Brameld, from Goombungee police, says he is glad that Joey‘s game had a happy ending: ―When we realized he was safe, we agreed that it doesn‘t get much be tter than that!‖

And young Joey promises that next time he won‘t be so intent on finding the best hiding place. ―I want to say sorry to the policemen and to Mummy for scaring them, ‖ he says. ― I promise next time I‘ll hide where they can find me and I won‘t fall asleep!‖

It‘s the basic nature of young children to touch the things in their environment that their parents find most unpleasant. Just try to keep your one-year olds from sticking the dog‘s bone in their mouth!

Although health authorities suggest regular hand washing, it‘s difficult not to worry about what your children are getting into and the effect it will have on their health. Infectious(传染的) diseases are a great cause for concern, but some would argue that our society has gone overboard when it comes to protecting our kids from bacteria(细菌).

An increasing body of research suggests that exposing little kids to bacteria may offer them greater protection from illnesses such as allergies(过敏)later on in life. I t‘s believed that when exposure to bacteria and viruses is limited early in life, children face a greater chance of having allergies and other autoimmune (自身免疫的) diseases during adulthood. In fact, kids with older brothers and sisters who grew up on a farm seem to show lower rates of allergies.

Just as a baby‘s brain needs stimulation, input, and interaction to develop normally, the young immune(免疫的) system is strengthened by exposure to everyday bacteria so that it can learn, adapt, and regulate itself, notes Thom McDade, PhD, associate professor and director of the Laboratory for Human Biology Research at Northwestern University.

Exactly which bacteria seem to do the trick hasn‘t yet been confirmed. But new research offers clues. In a recent study, McDade‘s team found that children who were exposed to more dirt and had more cases of diarrhea (腹泻) before age 2 had lower rates of inflammation (炎症) that has been linked to many adulthood diseases such as heart disease in adulthood.

―We‘re moving beyond this ide a that the immune system is just involved(涉及) in allergies and autoimmune diseases to think about its role in inflammation and other diseases, ‖ McDade says. ―Exposure to bacterium early in life may play an important role in preventing inflammation in adul thood.‖

71. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Exposure to bacteria as a child can help protect him or her from some illnesses later in life.

B. Kids with older brothers and sisters have lower rates of allergies.

C. Exposure to bacterium will increase the chance of having allergies in adulthood

D. Parents should protect their kids from exposure to bacteria.

72. The underlined word ―it‖ in Paragraph 4 refers to __________ .

A. a baby‘s brain

B. the young immune system

C. exposure to everyday bacterium

D. a baby‘s body

73. If a kid is exposed to dirt before age 2, he may_________.

A. have fewer cases of diarrhea in adulthood

B. develop a worse immune system than others

C. be more likely to have allergies later in life

D. be less likely to develop heart disease in adulthood

74. What is the author‘s attitude towards kids‘ exposure to bacteria?

A. Dissatisfied.

B. Negative.

C. Supportive.

D. Angry.

75. The passage is probably written for__________.

A. parents

B. your children

C. teachers

D. nurses

第四部分:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1]Safety in the highway is not totally out of hands. Here are four ways we can protect ourselves when we travel.

[2]You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products‘ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason of the problem.

[3]Being thrown into glass and metal car parts, or being thrown from the car can really damage to you. That‘s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt‘s main purpose is ____________________if your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object, or if it rolls over. A belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

[4]Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal(正面的)crashes——the type of crash that kills the most drivers——when they are also wearing safety belts. Most people are demanding air bags in the cars they buy. But air bags can not do much protection in side or rear(后面的) crashes; although they are effective, you can‘t ju st use them instead of safety belts.

[5]Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don‘t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that drunk driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are movements to strengthen penalties(处罚) for drinking and driving.

76.What is the main idea of the text? (no more than 10 words)

77.Complete the following statement with proper words.(no more than 5 words)But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective as they are, they can‘t safety belts.
