At the bottom of the world lies a mighty W1continent still w rapped in P1the Ice Age and, until recent times, unknown to man,

it is a great landmass with mountain ranges whose extent W2and elevation are still uncertain. Much of the continent is a complete blank on our maps. Man has explored, on foot, less than one percent of its area.

Antarctica differs fundamentally W3from the Arctic regions. The Arctic is an ocean, co v ered w ith P2drifting packed ice and hemmed in by the landmasses of Europe, Asia, and North America. The Antarctica is a continent almost as large as Europe and Australia combined, centered roughly on P3the South Pole and surrounded by the most unobstructed W4w ater areas of the w orld—the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.

The continental ice sheet is more than two miles high in its center; thus, the air over the Antarctica is far more iced than it is over the Arctic regions. This cold air current from the land is so forceful that it makes the nearby seas the stormiest in the w orld and makes unli v able those regions w hose counter parts(配对物) at the opposite end of the globe are li v able. Thus, more than million persons live within 2,000 miles of the North Pole in an area that includes most of Alaska, Siberia, and Scandinavia—a region rich in forest and mining industries. Apart from P4 a handful of weather stations, within the same distance of the South Pole there is not a single tree, industry or settlement.

Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big tough W1 African elephants running a w ay P1,a ne w study says. Beehives(峰窝)-either recorded or real-may even prevent elephants from damaging farmer's crops.

In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants

avoid certain trees with bees living in them. Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting P2 up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would scare elephants away.

Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya and put a speaker in a close to each family.

From a distance, Lucy switched on the pre-recorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17 groups, only one group ignored W2the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall(瀑布) instead of the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed W3. Even after four minutes, most of the groups stayed in one place.

Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial(最初的) results were promising enough to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened away.

Accompanying her husband on his first overseas trip after becoming president, Peng Liyuan showed a pleasant personality and well-chosen dress, creating the “Liyuan style”. Peng Liyuan, as one of China’s best-known singers, was popular among Chinese people long before her husband became the president. Loved by her fans, she has been in touch with the people for years. “Liyuan style” first lies in her dressing style. The beautiful handbags Peng has carried, and the plain but elegant dresses she has worn have become popular. Her choice of clothing, made-in-China instead of luxurious foreign brands, shows her belief in domestic dress designs. But “Liyuan style” is not only about clothing. It is also about diplomacy and promoting China’s soft power. 语篇提能 Ⅰ.阅读理解 Americans have taken over from the Indians many things besides their continent! Where did corn, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate and maple sugar come from? The Indians. Who invented moccasins, snowshoes and hammocks? The Indians! A list of the tools, plants, materials, and designs we owe to the Indians would include hundreds of items. But there is something far more familiar, something that is always at hand. It is used daily by every American: a large vocabulary of Indian words. Potato, tomato, chocolate, moccasin and hammock came into English from Indian languages. So did cocoa, tobacco, maize (an Indian word for corn) and succotash. Some words have changed on the way. Potato, for example, comes from a word that sounds like “batata”. Cocoa beg an as “cacahuatl”. Some meanings have also changed. The long Indian word from which succotash comes means “something broken off in bits.” Indian women often varied their dishes by mixing bits of one food with another. White men who ate an Indian dish of mixed lima beans (青豆) and corn began using the Indian word to mean this particular mixture. Put on your moccasins and take a walk in the country. But mackinaw came from “michilimackinac,” the Indian name of a place where a fort (集市) served as a trading post. Bright-coloured blankets or jackets bought at the post soon became known as “mackinaws.” Early white visitors to the continent found Indian words useful for the thin gs new to them. But some Indian sounds, such as the “tl” at the end of many words, were hard to say. That is why “coyotl” became coyote and
