Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their

time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, which is where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My wor king hours aren?t necessarily much shorter than they once were, but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she?d been born before electronic mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun—see a great movie, perhaps---and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may tire of telling the story.

With e-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use e-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, wit their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don?t eliminate (消除) any of the old ways.

31. The purpose of the passage is to _________.

A. explain how to use the Internet

B. describe the writer?s joy of keeping up with the latest technology

C. tell the merits(n. 优点) and usefulness of the Internet

D. introduce the reader to basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet

32. The use of e-mail has made it possible for the writer to __________.

A. spend less time working

B. have more free time with his child

C. work at home on weekends

D. work at a speed comfortable to him

33. According to the writer, e-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one____________.

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently

B. keep one?s communication as personal as possible

C. pass on much more information than the latter

D. get in touch with one?s friends faster than the latter

34. The passage discussed all the following aspects of e-mail except ___________.

A. its cost

B. the format of writing

C. the saving of time

D. its easy and convenient use

The UN(联合国) was started for two reasons. First, when the idea was born, people all over the world were tired of war. They were tired not just of World War II, but of war itself. They felt that there must be peaceful answers to the world' s problems. They felt that only an international organization could keep world peace.

《商务英语》考试试题第 2 页共 4 页

The second reason was that modern science had developed new bombs and airplanes. These weapons made it almost impossible for a country to defend itself. National borders were beginning to lose their meaning. There was also a feeling that this was only the beginning. Science would develop even more dangerous weapons in the future. Only an international organization would be able to control modern science.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt , who was President of the United States at the time, believed that the Allies (同盟国) should plan for peace before the war ended. On December 1, 1943, Roosevelt, Winston Churchill of Great Britain, and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union agreed to start an organization for world peace. They asked all countries, large and small, to join them.

During the next year and a half, the idea of such an organization was debated in all the capitals of the world. Then came a big day in modern history. On April 11, 1945, the first international meeting of the United Nations took place in San Francisco.

The goal of the meeting was to write the UN Charter (宪章). All of the fifty-one nations at the meeting had their own ideas to offer for the Charter. After a long debate, a Charter was agreed upon. Every nation present voted for the Charter; no one voted against it.

D. the USA, the Soviet Union and Great Britain

43. The preparation for the founding of the UN lasted ____.

A. half a year

B. a year and a half

C. two years

D. about a year

44. The aim of the first meeting of the UN was ____.

A. to elect chairman of the UN

B. to discuss world peace

C. to write the UN Charter

D. to end the war

45. The first international meeting of the UN was held in ____.

英美概况期末考试名词解释整理

The industrial revolution refers to the mechanization of industry and the consequent changes in social and economic organization in Britain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Britain was the first country to industrialize. The industrial revolution A period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries when major changes in agriculture, manufacturing, production, and transportation had a profound effect on the socioeconomic and cultural conditions in Britain. The Industrial Revolution, was a period of unprecedented technological, economic and social change that completely transformed British culture from a largely rural, static society with limited production and division of labour into the world's first modern industrial society. the Black Death It was the deadly bubonic plague who spread through Europe in the 14th century. It swept through England without warning and any cure, and sparing no victims. It killed between half and one-third of the population of England. Thus, much land was left untended and labor was short. It caused far-reaching economic consequences. The Black Death----It was one of the deadliest pandemics in human history, peaking in Europe between 1348 and 1350. It is widely thought to have been an outbreak of bubonic plague caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestisis and have started in Central Asia. It came without warning, and without any cue.The Black Death is estimated to have killed30% to 60% of Europe's population and had profound effects on the course of European history. In England, it killed almost half of the total population, causing far-reaching economic consequences. the Progressive Movement The Progressive Movement is a movement demanding government regulation of the economy and social conditions. It spread quickly with the support of large numbers of people across the country. It was not an organized campaign with clearly defined goals.(Rather, it was a number of diverse efforts at political, social, and economic reforms. In spite of limitations of the movement, it brought about changes and improvement in many fields.) Roman Britain was the part of the island of Great Britain controlled by the Roman Empire between AD 43 and about 410. Britannia already had cultural and economic links with Continental Europe, but the invaders introduced new developments in agriculture, urbanisation, industry and architecture, leaving a legacy that is still apparent today. The first Romans to campaign extensively in Britain were
