A21. What’s worrying Anna?A. Her friend keeps telling lies.B. Her friend is not interesting.C. Her friend does not believe her.D. Her friend reads her terrible stories.22. Dani suggests that Tom _____.A. leave his two friendsB. tell his friends his thoughtsC. go on an outing with one of his friendsD. invite another to join his group of friends23. Whose friend has a big mouth?A. Tom.B. Mary.C. Anna.D. Daisy.24. The underlined word “teasing” in the last paragraph probably means “_____”.A. avoidingB. hatingC. making fun ofD. taking pity onBOn my first day of high school, I asked an eleventh-grader where my class was. And he told me it was “on the fourth floor, next to the pool.” I found out five minutes later th at we don’t even have a fourth floor and there’s no pool either! Besides that, I didn’t have any trouble with the older kid.I think the biggest difference between middle and high school is the homework load (工作量) and size of the school. I went from maybe fifteen minutes of homework a night to several hours, so I had to learn how to make full use of time! Our class size is around 550, but joining in clubs, sports, music, and other activities at school makes it easier to get to know people in every grade. The best advice I can give about the years you spend in high school is to learn things for yourself, not just to get a good grade. There have been so many tests that I’ve prepared for the night before, gotten an A, and not remembered anything later. I’ve changed that this year, and I enjoy school so much more. Don’t take easy classes just to have a simple year. If you have a choice between chemistry and sports, the first will prove to be a lot more useful! While drinking and smoking might be present i n some middle schools, they’re also around in high school. I have a lot of friends who promised they’d never drink or smoke, but are now partying every weekend. If you have “fun” and spend your nights wasted instead of studying, you will regret it when you’re applying for (申请) college. The “friends” who say you’re a loser for not partying are really not your friends at all. It’s hard to see your closest friends grow apart and go in different directions, but don’t follow their footsteps. Create your own path in life and make your own decisions.25. What happened to the author on his first day of high school?A. He had a fight with an eleventh-grader.B. He fell into a pool on the fourth floor.C. He was five minutes late for class.D. He was fooled by a schoolboy.26. The author advises high school students to _____.A. give up sportsB. choose useful classesC. try their best to get good gradesD. get ready for tests the night before27. The last paragraph mainly tells us _____.A. about the trouble caused by drinking and smokingB. about the importance of making friendsC. not to go to any party in high schoolD. not to lose ourselves in high schoolCIn the book The Best Little Girl in the World, Kessa has a serious eating disorder (进食障碍) called anorexia nervosa. But she is not alone. Many people have this eating disorder. In the beginning of her story, Kessa is a normal 15-year-old. She is good at many things, especially dancing. She has danced for many years and loves it. One day her dance teacher tells her to continue eating right, but maybe lose a few pounds. Once Kessa hears this, she takes things too far. Instead of cutting down on snacks and junk food, she decides not to eat at all. She does not eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner. She begins losing weight and becomes slimmer (更加苗条的) and slimmer. But she loses weight to a point where she is unhealthy. As her poor eating habits continue, her parents start getting as much help as possible to cure (治疗) their beautiful daughter. But it is just as hard for Kess a’s parents to deal with her disorder as it is for her. Everyday she exercises to lose more pounds and plans what and when she will eat. Her parents try everything, but Kessa decides not to have any fat on her body.Kessa’s doctor and parents finally take her to the hospital. She is now so thin that she can hardly walk. There, she is given good care.In the rest of the book, Kessa goes through a lot of trouble in order to cure her eating disorder. This book, I think, can help to prevent people from doing this to themselves. It shows the trouble that people go through just to be slimmer, and all theterrible things they must experience to be cured. It is a book I think every teenager should read.28. What does Kessa do to lose weight?A. She stops eating.B. She eats less junk food.C. She has three small meals a day.D. She dances many more hours a day.29. What do we know about Kessa’s eating disorder?A. It is caused by her dance teacher.B. It’s too serious to be cured.C. It makes her suffer a lot.D. It’s an unusual illness.30. The book mentioned in the text is mainly about _____.A. how to cure eating disordersB. the importance of eating rightC. a girl’s fight against an eating problemD. why so many people have eating disordersDTime for Kids (TFK) gets the great news on the coolest toys for 2014 at the 111th American International Toy Fair. What’s four days long, bigger than seven football fields, and filled with thousands of toys? ASome people learn a foreign language because they want to communicate with the local people. Some other people are just curious about foreign cultures. Whatever your reason may be, the best foreign language software around will certainly help you pick up the language in a few weeks. You will be able to speak fluently and understand the language clearly as well.Tell Me MoreThis software is widely used in U.S. schools, and it is believed to be the best foreign language learning software around the world. The disadvantage is that there is a clear lack of interactive(互动的)activities for users so it does not result in fluency.Instant ImmersionThis software supplies learning material for up to 35 different languages, and it is widely considered as the best software for learning Spanish as well. It will cost you around $30, and this is a very reasonable price for such a piece of highly recommended and loved language learning software. The learning courses are highly interactive, and the ever present speech recognition feature ensures that you are getting the pronunciation right when you speak.Kid SpeakThis is a kind of foreign language translation software that you can make use of, and it will cost you around $30. It provides no interesting videos for children.3. Which of the software best suits users with poor pronunciation?A. Tell Me More.B. Talk Now.C. Ins tant Immersion.D. Kid Speak.BWhen I met and married a Japanese man in New York, I thought he would learn a bit more English and we would continue to live our lives there. But in life's twists and turns, we ended up living in Tokyo! I was the one who needed to learn Japanese and fast! There is no experience quite as lonely as living in a foreign country without a grasp of the language. Especially to make friends and to break that loneliness, it is the first and foremost goal to attain...always an uphill climb, while totally awkward!I was a trained English Language teacher, and while I lived abroad I did that work, and when we moved back to America I planned to continue it. The country's financial difficulties at the time, however, saw deep cuts to the English as a second language in schools and to refugee language programs. So I simply took a job in a department store, at its Child Playroom. But this store was located near a major company that hired some of its workforce from many other countries. Often a preschooler in my playroom could not speak a word of English, and would look so lost and lonely! My heart flew to them! We interacted with each other a lot. We would play English language games and they would teach their language to me.Years later, when a small girl who had come from South America could speak good English, she said to me, “Teacher, remember when I called you Maestra?”Another child whose language was only Russian originally-we built a robot from blocks and fed it block food and learned English words that way-would come years afterwards and continue to play that same game! These moments became my life compass-due north is that place where when persons are different, Love Matters!4. What was the author's challenge after marriage?A. She had to give up her job.B. She lost all her best friends.C. She needed to learn a new language.D. She was forced to live overseas.5. Why did the author change her job after she returned home?A. She set up her own company.B. She lost interest in teaching.C. Better teachers were needed.D. Teaching jobs were greatly reduced.6. What would the author and the young children do in the playroom?A. They learned each other's languages.B. They took language tests.C. They cared for each other.D. They encouraged each other in learning.7. Which word can best describe the author's interactions with children?A. Tiring.B. Helpful.C. Simple.D. Humorous.CPart of the reason that English has grown as a world language is that it easily adjusts to(适应)change. However, this means that what one was taught as a child in school may be out of date many years later. When words or phrases change, it can make speakers feel “wrong" because they were taught that something else was “right”.One example of this is a term connected to school itself. Today, it is common for people to say that they “graduated high school” or college. The word “graduate” has two common meanings. One is to mark off a series. The other meaning is closely related. As you move through school, you cross off a series of achievements: grade school, middle school, high school, and college. So, in a way, school itself is “graduated.”So, when people used to speak of getting a degree, they said they “graduated from college.” “To graduate college" would have meant to mark it off by year -the first year, the second year etc. Similarly, “to graduate to college” would have meant to complete high school and move up to the next level. But as happens often in English, when people understand your meaning, smaller words can disappear. “I graduated college" is now easy to say. This may distress people who were taught that you had to use “from” to be correct. But this is not the first time this phrase has been simplified. It used to be that you said, “I was graduated from college, "instead of, “I graduated from college.”You can't know what English will keep and what it will lose. Who could imagine that we would still say we “dial” a phone number when we now push buttons on our cellphone? Yet we know what it means.8. What do we know about the word “graduate”?A. It has two similar meanings.B. There was a change in its meanings.C. It had nothing to do with school at first.D. It got an extra meaning during its development.9. Which of the following is the newest usage of “graduate”?A. I was graduated from college.B.I was to graduate to college.C.I graduated from college.D.I graduated college.10. The underlined word “distress" probably means“A. changeB. correctC. worryD. hurt11. What's the best title for the text?A. Right or wrong?B. Words come and go in EnglishC. English is a very changeable languageD. How should English be taught in school?DEvery year, hundreds of hopeful students arrive in Washington, D. C., in order to compete in the National Spelling Bee, which has been held every year since 1925.In the competition, students under 16 take turns trying to properly spell words. The champion is the only remaining student who does not make a mistake. American students are familiar with the competition because it is practiced in many schools throughout the country. The National Spelling Bee, however, is a much bigger setting and showcases only the best spellers from all parts of the nation. Winning the competition nowadays requires the ability to perform under much pressure against so many talented students in front of a large audience. A student who wins the event in the twenty-first century will experience a much different challenge than the first winner,Frank Neuhauser, did in 1925 when he defeated only nine other competitors.Clearly, the 90 years of the National Spelling Bee's existence proves the importance of spelling in the English language. However, struggles with spelling English words go back much more than 90 years. The charming thing about spelling correctly in English is that it is in many ways without rules. English language can absorb new words from other languages and in doing so make them “English” words. Because of this, the number of words in English is much higher than any other languages. Thus, spelling in many other languages has fewer words and fewer strange exceptions to rules. It turns out that a spelling bee in most other languages would be a waste of time. Why is that? Well, without so many exceptions to common vocabulary, there would be very few words that everyone didn't already know.12. How is today's competition different from the first National Spelling Bee?A. It produces more winners.B. It draws more talented audience.C. It attracts more competitors.D. It tests more strange words.13. Why does the author mention “other languages” in Paragraph 3?A. To introduce the new rules of the competition.B. To gather students from other countries.C. To explain the difficulty in English spelling.D. To show the strict rules of written English.14. What's the author's attitude toward holding spelling competitions in most other languages?A. Unfavorable.B. Supportive.C. Responsible.D. Doubtful.15. What does the text mainly talk about?A. Ways to win a Spelling Bee.B. The most difficult language.C. The best spellers.D. A competition about spelling.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

AOne morning, more than a hundred years ago,an American inventor called Elias Howe finally fell asleep. He had been working all night on the design of a sewing machine but he had run into a very difficult problem:It seemed impossible to get the thread to run smoothly around the needle.Though he was tired,Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamt that he had been caught by terrible savages whose king wanted to kill him and eat him unless he could build a perfect sewing machine. When he tried to do so,Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the cage and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears raised. But suddenly the inventor noticed something. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inventor awoke from the dream, realizing that he had just found the answer to the problem.Instead of trying to get the thread to run around the needle,he should make it run through a small hole in the centre of the needle. This was the simple idea that finally made Howe design and build the first really practised sewing machine.Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way.Thomas Edison, the inventor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein.Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.To know the value of dreams, you have to understand what happens when you are asleep.Even then,a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious(无意识的),but still active part understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day.It stores all sorts of information that you may have forgotten or never have really noticed. It is only when you fall asleep that thispart of the brain can send messages to the part you use when you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way.It uses strange images which the conscious part may not understand at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “secret messages to ourselves”.1.The problem Howe was trying to solve was .A.what kind of thread to useB.how to design a needle which would not breakC.where to put the needleD.how to prevent the thread from getting caught around the needle2.Thomas Edison is spoken of because .A.he also themBHere are a few things to watch out for when you move somewhere new or are returning home after a long time away.Be careful on the road! The first thing that I did when I got out of the airport was to cross the road, but I looked the wrong way!In the UK the cars drive on the left-hand side of the road whereas in Spain they drive on the right.I almost got run over because I was still thinking I was in Spain. You have to be very careful. There's another strange one from travelling on the road.In Mallorca, most of the time, pedestrians(行人) can cross the road by walking on the road without stopping and the car will stop for them.In the UK,however, you have to be careful to wait forthe cars to stop or else you might end up in the hospital very quickly!Drink water. In Spain, most people buy large bottles of water to drink. In the UK the filtering(过滤) of the water means that you can drink straight from the tap.On my first night back I forgot that I could drink water from the taps and spent the night wishing I had a bottle of water. When I woke up,I realized how silly I had been.Time is different. In Spain there is a small break during the day to have a nap for the rest of the day.You also might only think about going out for a drink with friends in Spain at 11 p.m. In the UK that is already past the bedtime!4.What can we conclude from the text?A.The author is used to living in travelled a great deal with her mother and father. As a child, she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them.At last, her mind was made up.“I'm going to be a nurse,” she decided.“Nursing isn't the ri ght work for a lady,” her father told her.“Then I will make it so,” she smiled. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England,Florence started a nursing home for women.During the Crimean War in 1854,she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospital. What they saw there was terrible.Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any woman to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses went to work.Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men.Her only pay was the smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman. After war,she returned to England and was honoured for her service by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. She also wrote a book on public Robert Hooke was all these and more. Some say he was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century. In thecourse of his work, he cooperated with famous men of science like Isaac Newton, and the great architect Christopher Wren.Hooke's early education began at home, under the guidance of his father. He entered Westminster School and from there he went to Oxford, where he came in contact with some of the best scientists in England. Hooke impressed them with his skills at designing experiments and inventing instruments. In 1662, he was named Curator of Experiments at the newly formed Royal Society of London — meaning that he was responsible for demonstrating (展示) new experiments at the society's weekly meetings. Hooke accepted the job, even though he knew that the society had no money to pay him!Watching living things through a microscope was one of his favourite pastimes. He invented a compound microscope for this purpose. One day while observing a cork (软木塞) under a microscope, he saw honeycomb-like structures. There were cells —the smallest units of life. In fact, it was Hooke who invented the term “cell” as the box-like cells of the cork reminded him of the cells of some place.Another achievement of Hooke's was his book Micrographia, which introduced the enormous potential of the microscope. It contains fascinating drawings of the things he saw under the microscope. The book also includes, among other things, ideas on gravity, light and combustion (燃烧) that may have helped scientists like Newton when they were developing their own theories on these phenomena.Hooke made a valuable contribution to astronomy, too. A crater (坑) on the moon is named after him in honour of his services to this branch of science.1.Why did Hooke accept the job as Curator of Experiments?A.He was good at designing experiments.B.His family needed his support.C.He wanted to please the famous scientists in England.D.His parents couldn't afford his education.2.What does the underlined word “pastimes” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Jobs. B.Experiments.C.Hobbies. D.Structures.3.What can we learn from the text?A.Hooke went to Oxford in 1662.B.Hooke was well paid in the Royal Society of London.C.Hooke made a contribution to medicine.D.Hooke's book Micrographia might have helped Newton.4.What is the last paragraph to prove?A.Hooke was the greatest experimental scientist of the 17th century.B.Hooke was good at making discoveries.C.Hooke's contributions were not limited to one field.D.Hooke was one of the greatest astronomers.BParents often put their own relationship on the back burner to concentrate on their children, but a new study shows that when spouses (配偶) love each other, their children stay in school longer and marry later in life.Research about how the affection between parents shapes their children's long-term life outcomes is rare because the data demands are high. This study uses unique data from families in Nepal to provide new evidence. The study, co-authored by researchers at the University of Michigan and McGill University in Quebec, was published in the journal Demography.“In this study, we see that parents' emotional connection to each ot her affects child growth so much that it shapes their children's future,” said coauthor and UM Institute for Social Research researcher William Axinn. “The fact that we found these kinds of things in Nepal moves us to step closer to evidence that these things are universal.”The study uses data from the Chitwan Valley Family Study in Nepal. The survey was launched in 1995, and collected information from 151 neighborhoods in the Western Chitwan Valley. Married couples were interviewed at the same time but separately, and were asked to assess the level of affection they had for their partner. The spouses answered “How much do you love your husband/wife, very much, some, a little, or not at all?”The researchers then followed the children of these parents for 12 years to document their education and marital (婚姻的) behavior. They found that the children of the parents who reported they loved each other either “some” or “very much” stayed in school longer and married later.“Family isn't just another institution. It's not like a school. It is this place where we also have emotions and feelings,” said lead author Sarah Brauner-Otto, director of the Centre on Population Dynamics at McGill University. The researchers say that their next important question will be to identify why parental love impacts children in this way.5.Why is the research rarely done about the influence of parents' love on children's lives?A.Because few scientists show passion.B.Because the data are demanding.C.Because evidence is hard to collect.D.Because parents sometimes don't tell the truth.6.What does the underlined word “universal” in the th ird Paragraph mean?A.Reasonable. B.Scientific.C.Worldwide. D.Acceptable.7.What can be learned about the study from Paragraph 4?A.It started in the 19th century.B.It used information from 151 western countries.C.Couples were interviewed together.D.Couples needed to make an assessment of their closeness degree.8.Which of the following will Sarah Brauner-Otto agree with?A.Family is like a school.B.Family really matters.C.Home is the best place.D.All happy families are alike.Ⅱ.完形填空A New York woman is earning plenty of praise online after she wrote a message offering to help her elderly neighbors.Maggie Connolly, who lives in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens neighborhood, __1__ her handwritten letter __2__ several grocery stores in her community were short of supplies, according to Fox News. The letter, which is __3__ to “elderly neighbors and those with poor health”,includes Connolly's email address and an offer to help those __4__ people.Connolly's neighbor reposted an image of the letter, after which it was __5__ by several popular online accounts.
