James Watt was an English boy. He liked to ask questions and was always thinking hard.

One day he was sitting in the kitchen with his grandmother. He saw a kettle on the stove. Soon steam began to rise out of the kettle, and the lid was shaking.

“Grandma, what’s in the kettle?” he asked.

“Water, my child. Nothing but water.”

“But I know there is something . It pushes the lid up.”

“Oh, that’s only steam.”

“How does the steam get under the lid.”

“It comes from the hot water.”

Strange things happen to the time when you travel, because the earth is divided into twenty-four time zones, one hour apart.

If you make a five-day trip across the Atlantic Ocean, your ship enters different time zones every day. As you enter each zone, the time changes one hour. Traveling west, you set your clock back; traveling east, you set it ahead. Each day of your trip has either twenty-five or twenty-three hours.

If you travel by ship across the Pacific, you cross the international date line. By agreement, this is the point where a new day begins. When you cross the line, you change your calendar one full day, backward or forward. Traveling west, today becomes tomorrow, traveling east, it is yesterday.

46 From the passage we learn that the Atlantic Ocean is divided into ____.

Although the United States is a big country with a large population, the language is almost the same in every part of the country.

However, some words and expression are more common in one part of the country than in the others. For example, southern pronunciation differs from that of the rest of the country. People from the south speak more

slowly and they change the / / sound to / /, so that “ swim” sounds like “swimming”. Another example is about the word “evening”. To most of Americans, it means the time from the sunset to the early part of the night. But in the southern part, it means any time after twelve o’clock noon.

Different words are used in different parts of the country to mean the same thing. For example, people from the east call a soft drink “soda”, while in the west, people call it “tonic” or “pop”.

With the time passing by, the language changes. Seventy years ago, it was not correct to say, “It’s me.” But today it is acceptable. Most Americans say that instead of “It’s I”. What is wrong today may be right tomorrow.

51 From this passage, we know that the United States ____.

A has the largest population in the world

B is crowded

C uses English all over the country

D often changes its language

52 People from the south ____.

C don’t know the word “swimming”

D have no difficulty in understanding the people from the rest of the

country.

pm in the south of America is regarded as “evening”

B To most Americans, evening means any time after dark.

C To the Southerners, evening means any time after 12 o’clock midnight

D In fact, the period of time that the Southerners call “evening” is

the “afternoon” to most of Americans

54 People from which part of the United States call a soft drink “pop”

A People from the south

B People from the north

C People from the west

D People from the east

55 Seventy years ago, people in America_______.
