Kenji Croman has broken his bones , his shoulder and elbow, and nearly drowned several times. He’s also had three close encounters(遭遇) with sharks over the years. A 10-foot wave landed directly on top of him five years ago , bending his body to the point where he actually kicked himself in the head. “I literally heard every bone in my body crack.” he said.

Croman has been photographing ocean waves since 2008, sometimes risking his life to get that perfect shot at the surf break. Despite the risks and certain injuries that come with wave photography, the Hawaii resident, body surfer and former competitive swimmer wouldn’t do anything else. The 36-year-old photographer loves the thrill of meeting breaking waves head on, shooting waves as his interest and shooting surfers to pay the bills.

The process of photographing waves requires more than just swimming out to where the surf breaks and waiting, he says. The night before a photo shoot Croman checks https://www.doczj.com/doc/d013761020.html,, a website and the coastal camera network that provides live and predicted ocean weather information, to see what the winds, waves and tide will be like at certain times. Croman has both a primary camera and a backup for emergencies. He goes without a wetsuit and uses heavy duty underwater housing to protect his camera. There is no great way for him to protect himself. He admits there are probably protective clothes he should be wearing, but there is little he could have done to decrease the influence of the 10-foot wave that crashed on top of him.

The hardest part of Croman’s job is staying calm in the face of breaking waves when his

initial reaction is to panic and swim away. At most, Croman will take two to three shots of a single wave. “I’ve shot waves for so many years now that I see the wave in slow movement,” he said.

21. What do we know about Kenji Croman’s job from the first paragraph?

A. It is a game of death.

B. It is full of mysteries.

C. It requires patience.

D. It calls for courage.

22. How does Kenji Croman make a living?

A. By taking swimming races.

B. By teaching photography.

C. By shooting surfers.

D. By surfing waves.

23. What would be the best title of the text?

A. Taking adventures around the ocean

B. Risking his life for the perfect wave

C. Making preparations for life risks

D. Appreciating breaking waves in danger

(B)

The United Nations Environment Programme is calling for urgent action to reduce growing risks from chemicals. Better management of chemicals could save millions of lives and billions of dollars. As estimated(估计), 143,000 chemicals are now produced. Yet the report says only a small number of these chemicals have been studied for their effects on human health and the environment. It says death and disability rates are high from the unsafe use of chemical products.

Sylvie Lemmet, director of the United Nations Environment Programme, says poor management of chemicals has a high economic cost. For example, she says the cost is higher than the amount of overseas development aid, or ODA, for health care in sub-Saharan Africa.

She says, “If you look at the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide(杀虫剂) in sub-Saharan Africa, only the injury and the loss of working time are estimated to be 6.3billion US dollars in 2009. This is higher than the total ODA that is going to the health sector in the same area.”

The United Nations Environment Programme estimates that chemical sales worldwide will increase by around three percent a year until 2050. Chemical production is moving quickly from developed to developing countries. By 2020, chemical production is expected to increase by 40 percent in Africa and the Middle East and 33 percent in Latin America. One of its biggest concerns is the pollution of rivers and lakes by pesticide and fertilizer. Other major concerns are heavy metal pollution from the production of cement and textiles, and doxin pollution from mining.

The UN report urges the chemical industry and governments to work together to develop safety policies. It says preventing harm costs less than fixing it.

24. The purpose of Paragraph 3 is mainly to indicate that __________.

A. the use of pesticide causes a great loss

B. Africa needs more development aid

C. chemicals have a high production cost

D. the estimated cost of poisoning from pesticide is inaccurate

25. Which of the following is NOT a source of danger according to the text?

A. Pesticide

B. Fertilizer

C. Heavy metals

D. Minerals

26. According to the text, what is the main reason for the risks from chemicals?

A. Poor management of chemicals.

B. Lack of research funds on chemicals.

C. The mass production of cement and textiles.

D. Contradictions (矛盾)between chemical producers and governments.

27. What would be the best title for the text?

A. The truth in Sylvie Lemmet’s comments

B. A UN warning about chemical dangers

C. The unpredictable future of chemical industry

D. Preventing is much better than fixing

Cooking food over a smoky fire is found everywhere in the world. It is often difficult to find wood for the fire. People who do not have wood must spend large amounts of money on cooking fuel. However, there is a much easier way to cook food using energy from the sun. Solar cookers, or ovens, have been used for centuries. A Swiss scientist made the first solar oven in 1767. Today, people are using solar cookers in many countries around the world. People use solar ovens to cook food and to heat drinking water to kill bacteria and other harmful organisms.

There are three kinds of solar ovens. The first is a box cooker. It is designed with a special wall that shines or reflects sunlight into the box. Heat gets trapped under a piece of glass or plastic covering the top of the cooker. A box oven is effective for slow cooking of large amounts of food.

The second kind of solar oven is a panel(嵌板式) cooker. It includes several flat walls, or panels, which directly reflect the sun’s light onto the food. The food is inside a separate container of plastic or glass that traps heat energy. People can build panel cookers quickly and with very few supplies. They do not cost much. In Kenya, for example, panel cookers are being manufactured for just two dollars.

The third kind of solar oven is a parabolic(抛物线的) cooker. It has rounded walls that aim sunlight directly into the bottom of the oven. Food cooks quickly in parabolic ovens. However, these cookers are hard to make. They must be re-aimed often to follow the sun. Parabolic cookers can also cause burns and eye injuries if they are not used correctly.

You can make solar ovens from boxes or heavy paper. They will not catch fire. Paper burns at 232 degrees Celsius. A solar cooker never gets that hot. Solar ovens cook food at low temperatures over long periods of time. This permits people to leave food to cook while they do other things.

To learn more about solar cooking, you can write to Solar Cookers International. The postal address is nineteen-nineteen Twenty-First Street, Sacramento, California, nine-five-eight-one-one, USA. Or you can visit the group’s Internet Web site. The address is www.solarcook https://www.doczj.com/doc/d013761020.html,.

36 .

Lack of self-confidence is probably the most dreadful enemy of success. 37 Even the most capable person is sure to fail with such an attitude. If it is your case too, improving your self-confidence is a must .

Motivation is equally as important as self-confidence. 38 You may even not try to achieve the goal that lies before you. It is important to find out what is the best motivation for you. If you have to do something that does not motivate you, just treat yourself with a reward after you succeed. Of course, this reward should consist of something that will motivate you to pursue(追求)

a success.

39 While it is not a must for succeeding in your goals, a lack of support can often lead to failure. It is also true that some people cannot succeed without a proper support from their surroundings. These people often lose their motivation or worse, their self-confidence. If you know such a person, supporting him or her is a right thing to do. Also surround yourself with the right people. You will see the results soon.

Pursuing realistic goals is also important for a success. You should always make sure that your goals are achievable. 40 Unrealistic goals usually lead to a fast failure and also make many people embarrassed.

A.As we know, many people try but do not succeed.

B.Consider all your knowledge and skills when setting up a goal.

C.Motivation is something in yourself that can push you forwards.

D.There are several main reasons why some people cannot succeed.

E.Supportive family and collective workplace are also very important.

Looking back to the National English Speaking Competition I took several days ago, I have a lot to share with you.

For a start, I feel really delighted that I’ve won the first prize in the competition, which makes me understand the true meaning of the proverb “no pains, no gains.” Furthermore, in the five-day competition, I established a close friendship with students from all over our country, from whom I’ve learned a great deal. More importantly, taking this competition has enabled me to overcome my fear of speaking in public, thus developing my self-confidence. Additionally, I owe many thanks to my teacher and the judges, without whose help, I couldn’t have done such an excellent job.

In conclusion,, I will always value this meaningful and memorable experience.
