The "Occupy Wall Street" movement gained more support on Wednesday as unions and students joined in. With the protests developing from a group of young people's camping out near the New York Stock Exchange on September 17 to large-scale movements across the country and around the world, people can't help asking: What has led to "Occupy Wall Street?"

Three years after the severe economic crisis, the U.S. economy now is stuck again. Protesters are not satisfied with the present economic situation since unemployment rate is above 9 percent and economic growth has slowed. The housing market is still struggling for a recovery three years after the bubble (泡沫) burst. People are losing their houses even after they have paid a large amount of mortgage(抵押). It is getting difficult for young people to find

jobs. People feared that a similar crisis like the one in 2020 may be already on its way.

It is Wall Street that possessed the most riches. It is Wall Street greed that, at least partly, led to the financial crisis in 2020. It was Wall Street's "fat cats" who take taxpayers' aid money as their own big bonus (奖金). With the growing economic crisis around the world, people realize that Wall Street is responsible for it. So they try to target people who created the crisis.

The majority of the protesters are young people under 30. Many of them are unemployed. Some are students with mountains of loans. Some are hard-working people about to lose their houses even if they have paid a large amount of mortgage. They are complaining that the hard-working middle class is getting poor, yet Wall Street stays wealthy.

William Cohan, author of Money and Power: How Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the world, wrote recently that Wall Street not only learned nothing from the 2020 crisis, they are also trying to kill all reforms that might "break this dangerous cycle in which bankers get very rich while the rest of working people suffer from their mistakes."

60.What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The cause of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

B. The demand of the protesters of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

C. The popularity of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

D. The development of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

61.According to the second paragraph, what set off the “Occupy Wall Street” movement?

A. The housing market.

B. The bad economic situation.

C. The mortgage

D. The high unemployment rate.

62.We can infer that William Cohan .

A. is the organizer of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement

B. lives on Wall Street

C. is against the “Occupy Wall Street” movement

D. approves of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement

While reading a story on 20-somethings complaining about how the economy was ruiningg their life plans, I couldn’t help but think the 20-somethings sounded like a bunch of spoiled who grew up expecting everything to be easy for them. As a 20-something myself, certainly share their disappointment : my husband and I probably won’t be able to buy a house until we’re in our 40s, and we two are burdened by student loans. But why should it be any different? Being young persons in America, shouldn’t they take up all of the challenges and opportunities that this country offers?

Consider some of these views shared in the story: Jennifer, 29, owner of a two-bedroom apartment with her husband, worries that she won’t be able to have children for at least a decade because they can’t afford to buy a house yet.

I read that, and I thought what planet she is living on where you need to own a house in order to have kids? Has she ever visited a developing country, or even downtown areas in this one? Home ownership is a luxury, not a fertility requirement.

A 26-year-old in the story is disappointed that he can’t afford to get a Ph. D in literature. Well, that sounds a bit like expressing disappointment that no one will pay you to write poetry on the beach in Thailand for five years.

Yes, it’s sad that these young people fee l so lost. But I think the problem

is their extremely high expectations, not economic reality. Beth Kobliner, author of Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties, says that she thinks people’s expectations g rew up at a time when everyone’s wealth ap peared to be increasing, Their parents probably saw their home values rise along with their investments. “So you have people who have grown up in an environment where people had great expectations of what living well means,” says Kobliner.

This recession(经济衰退) will certainly play a role in forcing those expectations into more realistic group. In the meantime, it seems a lot better for our mental health to focus on being grateful---for our one-bedroom apartments, for living in modern cities, or perhaps just for being able to eat three meals a day---than on longing for some kind of luxury life. 63. The underlined word “fertility” in paragraph 3 probably means“_____”.

A. baby production

B. pleasant

C. baby comfort

D. comfortable

64. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the complaints of the 20-somethings?

A. They can’t have children for at least a decade before they can afford to buy a house.

B. They have only a one-bedroom apartment to live in.

C. They can’t buy a house until 40 and are burdened by student loans.

D. They despair at not being able to afford a PH. D in literature.

65. What’s the Kobliner’s attitude towards the 20-somethings with high expectations?

A. Unbearable

B. Opposite

C. Doubtful

D. Understanding

66. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Young people afford to continue their study

B. Young people can’t afford to buy a house

C. Young people’s high hopes create despair

D. The 20-somethings’ high expectations

D

With both hands resting on top of the steering wheel, Oshima looks over at me: “That’s where you will be living now, Kafka. In the room where Miss Saeki used to spend time with her boyfriend. As I said, there is some change to the library, but it’s the very same room. ”

Silence on my part.

“Miss Saeki’s life stopped at age 20,when her lover died. No, maybe not age 20, maybe much earlier... I don’t know the details, but you need to know of this. The hands of the clock inside her soul stopped then. Time outside, of course, flows on as always, but she isn't affected by it. For her, what we consider normal time is meaningless.”

“Meaningless?”

Oshima nods. “Like it doesn’t exist. ”

“What you're saying is Miss Saeki still lives in that frozen time?”“Exactly. When you get to know her better you'll understand.”

Oshima reaches out and lays a hand on my knee on a totally natural gesture. “Kafka,in everybody’s life there’s a point of no return. And in a very few cases, a point where you can’t go forward any more. And when you reach that point, all we c an do is quietly accept the fact. That's how we survive.”We’re about to get onto the main highway. “There’s one other thing I’d like you to know of,” he goes on. “Miss Saeki has a wounded heart. To some degree that's true of all of us. But Miss Saeki has a special wound that goes

beyond the usual meaning of the term. Her soul moves in mysterious ways. I’m not saying she's dangerous-don't get me wrong. On a day-to-day level she's certainly got her act together, probably more than anyone else I know. She’s a ttractive, deep, smart. But just don’t let it worry you if you notice something strange about her sometimes.”

“Strange?” I can’t help asking.

Oshima shakes his head. “I really like Miss Saeki, and respect her. I'm sure you'll come to feel the same way.”

Th is doesn’t really answer my question, but Oshima doesn’t say anything.

67. The conversation takes place .

A. in a library

B. in a moving car

C. where Miss Saeki used to spend time with her boyfriend

D. where Kafka lives

68. Which of the following statements is right?

A. Oshima knows every detail about Saeki.

B. Oshima knows Saeki well enough to understand her.

C. Oshima knows Saeki better than anyone else.

D. Oshima knows very little about Saeki, but respects her.

69. We can infer from the passage that .

A. there is something wrong with Saeki’s clock

B. nobody likes Saeki because she refuses to accept the fact

C. Saeki is attractive, smart but dangerous

D. Saeki carries only the memory of a childhood lover that death took away from her

70. The writer wants to give us a feeling of by giving readers the description of Saeki.

Few Americans stay in one place for a lifetime. We move from the city to the suburbs, from high school to college in a different state, from a job in one area to a better job elsewhere, from the home where we raise our children to the home where we plan to live in retirement. With each move we are forever making new friends, who become part of our new life.

For many of us the summer is a special time for forming new friendships. Today, millions of Americans go on vacation abroad, and we go not only to see new sights but also—in those places where we don’t feel too strange—with the hope of meeting new people. No one really expects a vacation trip to produce a close friend, but the beginning of a friendship is possible. Surely in every country people value friendship.

The word “friend” to American people can be applied to a wide range of relationships—to someone one has known for a few weeks in a new place, to a close business companion, to a childhood playmate, to a man or a woman, or to a trusted colleague. There are real differences among these relations for Americans—a friendship may be shallow, casual, situational or deep and lasting. But to a European, who sees only our surface behavior, the differences are not clear.

As Europeans see it, all kinds of “friends” flow in and out of Americans’ homes with little ceremony. They may be parents of the children’s friends, house guests of neighbors, members of a committee, business associates from another town or even another country. Coming as a guest into an American home,

the European visitor finds no obvious landmarks. The atmosphere is relaxing. Most people, old and young, are called by first names. Americans’ characteristic openness to different styles of relationship makes it possible for us to find new friends abroad with whom we feel at home.

高三英语周练1

高三英语周练(1)试题 命题人:考试时间:50分钟总分:89分 Ⅰ. 阅读理解(满分39分) A Food festivals around the world Stilton Cheese Rolling May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50-metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane(赛道). Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese. Fiery Foods Festival—The Hottest Festival on Earth Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction—food that is not just spicy(辛辣),but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate-covered habanero pepper—officially the hottest pepper in the world—or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure—if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you! La Tomatina—The World's Biggest Food Fight On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bunol hosts La Tomatina—the world's largest food fight. A week-long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes—official fight-starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd. The battle lasts little more than half an hour, in which time around 50,000 kilograms of tomatoes have been thrown at anyone or anything that moves, runs, or fights back. Then everyone heads down to the river to make friends again—and for a much-needed wash! 1. In the Stilton cheese rolling competition, competitors on each team must________. A. wear various formal clothes B. roll a wooden cheese in their own lane C. kick or throw their cheese D. use a real cheese weighing about four kilos 2. Where is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival held? A. In New Mexico. B. In the Caribbean. C. In Australia. D. In China.
