Topic One School Life

Cheating In The Exam

It’s five minutes before the exam and you are in a state of feeling bad. You just have to pass it, but how? You hear a voice in your head keep saying “Cheat, cheat ...” So what are you going to do, let it be an d fail or go for it? It’s a hard d 1 many students must make.

Most young people believe that cheating is w 2 . However, they have cheated at least once in their high school years. So, why do they do it? Are they too lazy to study? Perhaps, but it’s not as simple as that. According to some experts(专家), one main r 3 why students cheat is that they see their friends get away with it. It’s an easy way out. They won’t be troubled with bad feelings themselves and their parents’ anger for not doing well in an exam. A 4 reason is that students th ink it’s OK to cheat if the subject isn’t important for their future. What’s more, most students have to put up with the pressure of getting into university. They need to get good marks to carry on with their studies. This m 5 that there will always be students who will do anything for a better mark.

It has never been e 6 to cheat than it is today. With all the technology tools, students needn’t cheat by looking over their shoulders any more. They use mobile phones to send answers to each other during a test. There is also the Internet. With hundreds of websites, students can find lots of material which they can copy and use. There are even tips on the art of cheating in exams.

Obviously, if you get caught cheating, you fail the exam or the s ubject. But it doesn’t really matter whether you get caught or not. What’s important is that it’s wrong. You mustn’t cheat because cheating is a lie. It wrongly leads you into thinking you know more than you a 7 do. How can you be proud of something you have got through cheating? In the end, it’s not about fooling your teachers and your parents, but about yourself.

Work or Play

More play and less work makes for more talented (有才能的) children. Some officials suggested that school hours for children aged 7 to 12 should be cut down, and that they should be e 1 to spend at least an hour a day on team sports.

All work and no play makes children depressed. Becky, an 8-year-old girl, used to be happy when she finished classes every day, but now, life has become unhappy. To make sure she has enough time for the lessons, she has to study until 11 at night to finish her homework.

Some ideas are offered for helping cultivate (培养) kids' talents. The ideas i 2 cutting down classroom hours, introducing more team sports for children, getting parents to stop putting too much pressure (压力) on children and some other suggestions. It is believed that all these can help encourage young people to be confident.

"I used to go to the park with my parents at weekends. I like playing tennis with my dad and I can play well," a boy said, "But now, I h 3 have time to do that any more."

"I would like to try other things, such as drawing," Nara said. She was interested in drawing, but her parents thought it was not a bright way for her.

Children now spend more time doing homework than playing, and we all know it’s quite

n 4 for them to have plenty of sleep. A lot of homework and heavy school bags are driving more young children away from a joyful childhood.

Parents believe that b 5 well in school is a sure way to bring their children a bright

future. It was studied that about 80 percent of parents said they expected their children to get a university degree (学位) or some form of higher education. About 15 percent of students in primary school and 40 percent in middle school said they thought their parents were not

s 6 with their marks.

"Parents must always be willing to talk to their children and make them happy," an educationist advised, "Encourage him or her to be confident when he or she faces d 7 . Parents should know what their children like and what they want."

The Key to Learn English Well—Speaking

Among the four skills in learning English, which one of these seems to be d 1 from the others? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone on your own. But you can’t really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be “dangerous” because men in white coats may come and take you away!

Where can you find people to speak English? And how can you p 2 speaking when you are alone?

At school If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the opportunity to speak. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to say as much as possible. Don’t w 3 about your mistakes. Just speak!

Conversation Clubs Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where people can e 4 one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. They are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee.

Shopping Even if you don’t want to buy anything, you can ask questions about p 5 tha t interest you in a shop. “How much does this cost?” “How can I use it properly?” Often you can start a real conversation—and it costs you nothing!

Cafe and Bars There are often American, Britain, Irish and Australian bars in many large cities. If you can find one, you’ll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.

Signs Language is all around you. Everywhere you go, you find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices, and car numbers…When you walk down the s treet, practice reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to y 6 . It’s not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to “think” in English. But don’t speak too loud!

Songs and Video Repeat the words of an English-language song singing with the music until it becomes a 7 . It’s good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.

Above all, speak as much as possible! Make as many mistakes as possible! When you know that you have made a mistake, you know that you have made progress!

Believe In Yourself

“Exams will be the death of me,” I can remember what I thought about exams in school. I was not a good student. Even when I s 1 hard (which was not often enough), my marks never seemed to improve. The mid-term exams are over and some of you may also be thinking, “Exams will be the death of me.” You worked hard but... You may think that schoolwork is just too h 2 , or even that you just aren’t smart.

But let me tell you: you are smart enough and schoolwork is also easy for you! How do I

know that? Well, because you have already had a lot of s 3 in school. To be a middle school student you have already p 4 many exams. And your English must be good because you are reading this article!

The Chinese school system r 5 that you sit and listen for long periods of time. But not everyone is good at sitting and listening. The Chinese system is only one “way” of learning. But there are o 6 “ways” which may work better for you.

And, remember many poor students have done better than good students in the “real world”: hey, Bill Gates was a university dropout(辍学学生)!

T 7 , don’t feel bad if your mid-term results were poor. Mid-term exams are just the middle, not the end. You still have time to improve, and to make changes.

How to Behave In a School Interview

A headmaster is giving a speech about how to perform successfully in an interview to a new school.

Interviews are held so that you can learn about the school and the school can learn about you. You should spend a couple of hours getting r 1 for the interview carefully. Then you will p 2 understand your questions better and get right answers on the day of the interview.

First find out about the school. Read the school i 3 and look at the school websites. Then think about yourself—your strong points and w 4 ones. Try to find a few examples you could give the interviewers.

What else you want to tell the interviewer about yourself? For example, you might want to speak about your i 5 and hobbies outside school. These tell the interviewer what kind of person you are. Be ready to talk about why you enjoy them.

Dress p 6 on the day. Arrive a few minutes early. When you first meet the interviewer, greet him or her politely. Don't forget to smile and make eye contact. First impressions (印象) are very important. You want the interviewer to think you are confident and friendly.

If you get nervous, take a deep b 7 to calm yourself down. Listen to the interviewer with great care. If you don't understand the question, ask the interviewer to repeat it. Last but not least, at the end of the interview, don't forget to thank the interviewer and say goodbye.

I'm sure that you will do well in your interviews. Best of luck, boys and girls!

Test Anxiety

Anne White studied at Colorado University. She first had a problem taking tests when she began college. “I was always well p 1 for my tests. Sometimes I studied for weeks before a test. Yet I would go in to take the test, only to find I could not answer the questions c 2 . I was unable to think properly because of nervousness and fear. I couldn’t think of the answer. My low grades on the test did not show what I know to the teacher.” Another student had the same e 3 . He said, “My first chemistry test was very difficul t. Then, on the second test, I sat down to take it, and I was so nervous that I was s 4 . My hands were moving up and down so quickly that it was hard to hold my pencil. I knew the material and I knew the answers. Yet I couldn’t write them down.”

These two young students were experiencing something called test anxiety (焦虑). Because a student worries and is uneasy about a test, his or her mind does not work as well as it usually does. The student cannot write or think clearly because of nervousness. Although poor grades are

often a r 5 of poor study habits, sometimes test anxiety causes the low grades. At present, test anxiety has been known as a real problem, not just an excuse or false explanation of lazy students.

Experts are trying to help those students by teaching them how to manage test anxiety. At some university, students take tests to measure (测量) their anxiety. If the tests show their anxiety is high, the students can take short courses to help them deal with their nervousness. These courses teach students how to r 6 their bodies. Students are trained to become calm. By controlling their nervousness, they can let their minds work e 7 . Learned information then comes out without difficulty on a test.

A Horrible Day

Today was not a good day. E 1 went wrong. First, I slept late and Mom shouted at me to wake up. I tried to wake up but I couldn’t. I just went back to sleep, and she had to come and shouted at me again.

When I f 2 got out of bed, I went to the kitchen for breakfast. There was no cereal(粮食). I decided to have some toast i 3 , but I burned it. I had to eat it anyway because there was no more bread. There was no juice, either. I just had a glass of water.

When I was almost at the bus stop, I r 4 that I had forgotten my wallet, so I had to go back home and get it. Of course, I missed the bus and had to wait for the next bus.

I was late for school and the teacher t 5 me to stay in the classroom at lunchtime to catch up on (弥补)the schoolwork I had missed.

After lunch, it was the time to give the teacher our homework. I reached into my bag to get it but it wasn't there. I had left it at home. I was in t 6 again.

When I got home, I went straight to my room to catch up on my homework. Mom c 7 fish for dinner. She knew I didn't like fish, but she thought it was good for her son. It was a horrible day. I hope tomorrow will be better.

Ways to Improve Written English

Hi Mary,

Thank you for writing to me and I will try to give you some ideas about improving your written English. The bad news, of course, is that there is no e 1 way to do this. It takes work.

Improving your English, like getting better at anything else, means lots of practice. I think you already know enough words and grammar in English to make sentences and to understand English, and the problem you have is as the problem all Chinese students have when they learn English. You go to English class a couple of times a week and the r 2 of the time you speak Chinese. If you come to Canada, your English would improve very q 3 because you would use it all day, every day. It’s just practice.

To improve your writing in English, you should do t 4 things. First, you should try to read English as much as possible. It doesn’t matter what you read, so pick something that interests you. Reading English will show you how English words are used together, how English speakers express themselves and so on, so you can learn a lot from that. Then you should practice writing. Ask your teacher if you can get extra assignments and write things like short stories. Your teacher can show you where you make mistakes and how to c 5 them. You can also write more letters to English speakers on the Internet (I will be happy to exchange letters with you if that will

help). Don’t worry if you make mistakes b 6 that is how you learn.

You say you can not obey your plans. In English we say, “Plan the work, work the plan.” You need a plan and then you need to follow your plan to improve.

I hope these ideas are u 7 . I wish you luck, and if you want to write to me I will be happy to try to help you. We can talk about China, about Canada or anything else you like.

Best wishes,

Brad Flankin

A Successful Young Boy

Moshe Kai Cavalin is a half Chinese American boy. As one of the youngest students to graduate from a two-year college at the age of 11, Moshe Kai Cavalin has every reason to be proud of h 1 .

But Cavalin said, “I feel proud, but not too proud, because it is the enemy of learning.”

Cavalin graduated from the East Los Angeles Community College. What surprised

m 2 is not only his young age, but his excellent performance: he is one of the three graduates from the college who had a high score.

When he first went to the college at the age of 8, professors treated him like a child. But later, he became one of the c 3 and got along pretty well with the other students who were 18 years and older.

The 11-year-old college graduate is going to write a book about his secrets on how he graduated from college at 11 w 4 going to primary school and high school.

“I want to be a scientist like Albert Einstein,” said C avalin.

Cavalin’s mother Sandy Chien comes from Taiwan, and his father is from Brazil. Chien said her son s 5 his talent (天赋) at the age of two. He learned very fast and liked to watch TV and read children’s books.

“I tried to send my son to the elementary school, but I found that he learned too fast and very often he had n 6 to do during the lessons. So I decided to teac h him at home.” said Chien.

Like many Chinese parents, Chien sent her son to a private school to learn the piano at 4, and later sent him to learn Chinese Kung Fu. At age 7, Cavalin had c 7 high school at home.

Being born in America, English is his mother language. He can also speak French. He likes to play games with friends of the same age. However, he has a good relationship with the students who are 10 years older than him at college.

A Poor Student and a Selfish Restaurant Owner

There was a poor student. He lived in a small room near a restaurant. His room was at the back of the kitchen. The restaurant owner was a very selfish (自私的) man. But he was a good cook and the food in his restaurant was d 1 , so many people came to his restaurant to eat and drink.

One day when the owner was in his kitchen, he heard the poor student t 2 with his friend. “You aren’t very happy, are you?” asked his friend. “Oh, no, I am very happy.” said the student, “I am interested in my room.” “But you have no m 3 to buy nice food to eat.” “Yes, it’s true. I eat only rice. But the smells from the kitchen make the rice nice indeed,” said the student.

The restaurant owner was angry. The student was s 4 the smells from his kitchen! He

decided to take him to court (法庭).

Everybody laughed when the selfish man finished his story. But the judge said s 5 , “The student was wrong.” The restaurant owner was happy and the poor student was afraid very much. What could he do? He had only a few coins.

The judge asked the student w 6 he had money or not. The student took out four coins and gave them to the judge.

“Let the coins fall into your left hand,” said the judge. The court was very quiet and everyone heard the sound of the coins as they were falling into the student’s left hand.

“Well,” said the judge to the restaurant owner, “you’ve h7 his money. You’ve been paid for your smells.”
