In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separa tely. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know”. Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” however, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate. Also, some letters have different sounds. For example, the Americans say the “a ” in half like the “a ” in cat. But the British say the “a ” in half like the “o ” in soft.Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English.Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabularyfor cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries. Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”.There are also some differences in grammar. For example, when Americans ask a question., they say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often say “Have you a storybook?”All these differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change姓名:____________ 班级:____________ 考场:______________ 考号:__________…………………………装…………………………订…………………………线…………………………………………in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.5. In much of the United States, winter means the return of snow.Snow is a form of frozen water. It contains many groups or very small ice particles called snow crystals(晶体). These crystals grow from water particles in cold clouds. They usually grow around a piece of dust. All snow crystals have six sides, but they grow in different shapes. The shape depends mainly on the temperature and water levels in the air. The shape of a snow crystal may change from one form to another as the crystal passes through levels of air with different temperatures. Snow contains much less water than rain. About seventy-five centimeters of snow has as much water as two and a half centimeters of rain.Generally, the color of snow and ice appears white. This is because the light we see from the sun is white. Most natural materials take in some sunlight. However, when light travels from air to snow, some light is sent back, or reflected(反射). Snow crystals have many surfaces to reflect sunlight. It is this light that gives snow its white color.Much of the water we use comes from snow. Melting snow gives water to rivers and crops. Snowfall helps to protect plants and some wild animals from the cold. Fresh snow is made largely of air which is kept among the snow crystals. Because the air has trouble moving, the movement of heat is greatly reduced. However, snow isresponsible for the deaths of hundreds of people in the United States every year. Many people die in traffic accidents on roads that are covered with snow or ice.28. In the center of a snow crystal there is .A. airB.dustC. waterD. sunlight29. If fifteen centimeters of snow completely melts, the height of water will be .A. 0.5 centimeterB. 1 centimeterC. 1.5 centimetersD. 15centimeters30. The researchers traveled to Australia this year to study native languages, some of the most endangered. According to Harrison, in Australia, they were heartened to see a woman in her 80s who was one of the only three remaining speakers of the Yawuru language passing on her knowledge to schoolchildren. He said such inter-generational exchanges were the only way native languages could survive. “The children had elected to take this course, no one forced them,” he said. “When we asked them why they were learning it, they s aid,‘This is a dying language, we need to learn it’.” Also, while there they found a man with knowledge of the Amurdag language, which had previously been thought extinct. The researchers said all five of the hot spots identified were areas that had been successfully colonized and where a dominant language such as Spanish or English was threatening native tongues.32.What does this text mainly talk about?A.The knowledge of native languages.B.A study on native languages endangered.C.People’s efforts in saving native languages.D.Harrison and his study on languages.33.The underlined word“vanishing”in the second paragraph can be best replaced by.A.developing B.changing C.increasing D.disappearing34.According to Harrison, language extinction .A.results in lots of worriesB.speeds up the pace of species extinctionC.threatens the existing of Spanish and EnglishD.brings about a loss of knowledge about the environment35.According to the text, native languages were endangered partly because of .A.few researches done on themB.the small population of native peopleC.the strong influence of ruling languagesD.little education native people receive at school三、七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

One day she decided that she wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the middle of the nineteenth century. After writing many letters asking for admission(录取)to medical schools, she was finally accepted by a doctor in Philadelphia. She was so determined that she taught school and gave music lessons to get money for the cost of schooling. In 1849, after graduation from medical school, she decided to further her education in Paris. She wanted to be a surgeon(外科医师) , but a serious eye problem forced her to give up the idea.Upon returning to the United States, she found it difficult to start her own practice because she was a woman. By 1857 Elizabeth and her sister, also a doctor, along with another woman doctor, managed to open a new hospital, the first for women and children. Besides being the first woman physician and founding her own hospital, she also set up the first medical school for women. 1.Why couldn’t Elizabeth Blackwell realize her dream of becoming a surgeon? But have you ever thought about how to take care of four to twelve old people when you grow up and get married? This could be a problem for most Chinese youths as China is entering a new stage of an aging society. An aging society refers to one where 10 percent or more of its populationis over 60. By the end of 2007, Chinese over 60 years old have made up 11.7 percent of the nation’s total population. “China is getting old before becoming rich,” said Cai Chuang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The population increase that has powered Chinese growth for three decades will give way over the next ten years to a rapid aging of the society. This will lead to weaker economic growth, because of a lack of labor resources. As a result of the family planning policy, it is expected that the country's total working population will decrease after 2015.China is not the only country getting old. More than 60 countries have become aging societies and one in three people in the European Union is a senior citizen. However, experts said that China doesn't have a highly developed social security network to support the old. This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home.To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day.Wash it only once a day.Run your dishwasher (洗碗机)only when it is full.Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.8.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?A.Using river water.B.Throwing batteries away.C.Paving parking lots.D.Throwing rubbish into lakes.9.What can be inferred from the text?A.All water shortages are due to human behavior.B.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.10.The last paragraph is intended to________.A.show us how to fix leaks at homeB.tell us how to run a dishwasherC.prove what drinking glass is best for usD.suggest what we do to save water at home11.The text is mainly about________.A.Why paving roads reduces our waterB.how much we depend on water to liveC.why droughts occur more in dry climatesD.how human activity affects our water supplyAlthough English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from.Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers(汉堡包) are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham(火腿)? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put each between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting. too. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of color preference as well as the effect that colors have on human beings. 17.If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.18.A yellow room makes most people more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one. The number of suicide attempts fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.20.it is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey. Before I left for America, everyone warned me to watch my weight because it’s easy to put on weight there. That’s true. One thing I still cannot adjust to is the food and drink. Almost every American person loves sodas, especially those full of ice cubes (方块). I remember the first day I came to my host family. When I asked them for a glass of hot water, they all looked at me and thought I was crazy! At my school there’s no water dispenser (饮水机) but there’s one in each classroom in China. All the American students drink water from taps (水龙头) outside the restrooms that are specially designed for drinking. The water is cold and the school doesn’t have hot water. The most popular food here is hamburgers and French chips, which are junk food in China. Most students who eat at school prefer those to salads. They also eat lots of pizzas and hot dogs. As a result, you can always see some really fat people in school. Luckily, my host mom is really a great cook. She always makes food from different countries and eats a balanced meal every day. So I have a lot of fruit and vegetables. At my host family’s home, they usually eat biscuits. These old-fashioned biscuits are low in fat and flavored with buttermilk, butter, and a bit of honey. Oh here comes the most interesting thing: the word “biscuit” in China actually means “cracker (薄脆饼干)” here. Real biscuits are a kind of soft cake. I was also amazed by the rich kinds of food in American supermarkets and their reasonable prices. For example, one brand of yogurt has 20 kinds of flavors! You’re sure to find one that you like. And most of the food provides you “light”, “original” or “no sugar” options to choose from.
