A newspaper reporter’s job can be very interesting. He meets all types of people and lives quite a busy life. He is on the rush for news all the time, then after several years he may get a desk job, and life becomes a bit more settled. Let’s look at his work a little more closely. In a day he may have to interview the prime minister of a foreign country, and the next day he may be writing about a football match. Sometimes he may be so busy that he has hardly any time to sleep. on a special thing: horse racing, for example. In most newspaper houses there is at least one special racing correspondent. Some newspapers have book reviews. Their job is delightful. The more we learn about the octopus (章鱼), the more intelligent we discover they are. O ctopuses possess not one but nine “brains”, one in each of their legs and a central brain

behind the eyes. Octopuses can solve problems, can be trained to learn behavior and are extremely good at figuring out how to get out of an aquarium (水族馆) and get into food. We can learn a lot from an octopus.

An octopus doesn’t have a backbone, which doesn’t mean that they lack nerve. On the contrary, their nervous system, which goes all the way down each leg, is very complex. They are able to take in a lot of information about their world and seem to be able to remember, learn and adapt to new situations.

The suckers (吸盘) on their long legs can not only feel, but also taste. Each sucker works individually, so an octopus can just focus on one leg or one sucker. Their eyesight is sharp. Although their brains are quite small in comparison to ours, they still have very large brains for invertebrates (无脊椎动物). They have many physical characteristics of a human brain.

Perhaps you’ve seen the video of an octopus in a German aquarium that learned to open a jar to get its food. Octopuses have also been taught to go through mazes (迷宫) and to pick out different shapes of patterns. Their short term and long term memory seems to be excellent. It is thought that octopuses are as intelligent as dogs in their capacity (能力) to learn certain behavior, solve problems, and make use of objects.

In the movie “Octopus Intelligence: Deep Sea Aliens,” some species of octopuses are letting young octopuses watch the adults in order to train them. If this keeps up, in a hundred thousand generations the octopus may rule the seas. Clearly, there is more to an octopus than just a lot of legs.

60. We can learn from the passage that the octopus ______.

A. is the cleverest animal in the sea

B. has nine small brains and a big one

C. has a very complex nervous system

D. has all its brains behind its eyes

61. Which of the following statements about the suckers of the octopus is true?

A. Each one can work by itself.

B. They can taste but can’t feel.

C. Each leg has only one sucker.

D. Each one has an eye,

62. Paragraph 4 mainly tell us ______.

A. the octopus is as clever as the dog

B. what octopuses are good at

C. octopuses can go through mazes

D. how intelligent octopuses are

63. We can learn from the last paragraph that octopuses ______.

A. will rule the oceans in the future

B. may have an unbelievable future

C. are good at training their young

D. should have more powerful legs

When important events are happening around the world, most people turn to traditional media (媒体)sources, such as CNN and BBC for the news. However, during the war in Iraq in 2003, many people followed the war from the point of view of an unknown Iraqi citizen who called himself “Salam Pax”, which means peace.

Salam Pax wrote a diary about everyday life in Baghdad during the war, and posted it on his web site. Pax’s online diary was a kind of website known as a “blog”. Blogs are online diaries, usually kept by individuals, but sometimes by companies and other groups of people. They become the fastest growing type of website on the Internet.

A blog differs from a traditional website in several ways. Most importantly, it is updated (更新) much more regularly. Many blogs are updated every day, and some are updated several times a day. Also, most blogs use special software or websites, which can help ordinary people easily set up and start writing their own blogs.

There are many different kinds of blogs. The most popular type is an online diary of links where the blog writer surfs the Internet and then posts links to sites or news articles that they find interesting, with a few comments about each one. Other types are personal diaries, where the writer talks about their life and feelings. Sometimes these blogs can be very personal.

There is another kind of blogging, called “moblogging”, short for “mobile blogging”. Mobloggers use mobile phones with cameras to take photos, which are posted instantly to the Internet. The use of mobile phones in this way made the headlines (头条) in Singapore when a high school student posted a movie he had taken of a teacher shouting at another student on the Internet. Many people were shocked by what the student did, and wanted phones with cameras to

be banned from schools.

Many people think that as blogs become common, news reporting will rely less on big media companies, and more on ordinary people posting news to the Internet. They think that then the news will be less like a lecture, and more like a conversation, where any one can join in.

64. Which statement about Salam Pax is true?

A. He worked for CNN.

B. Salam Pax was not his real name.

C. He was famous as a host in BBC.

D. He used a mobile phone for his blog.

65. What is the biggest difference between blogs and traditional websites?

A. Blogs are updated much more often.

B. Blogs contain links to other

websites.

C. Blogs use special software.

D. Blogs contain personal information.

66. According to the passage, which statement about the future is most likely to be true?

A. In the future, everyone will have a blog.

B. In the future, large media companies will be unnecessary.

C. In the future, people will be able to learn news from other sources.

D. In the future, blogging technology will be banned.

67. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. The History of the Internet

B. A New Type of Media

C. The War in Iraq

D. The Increase of Using Computers

D

Dear Cary,

I’m writing because I’ve understood you’ve struggled with alcoholism (酗酒). I’ve been fighting mine ever since I went through 9-11. After that, I’ve been more or less useless. Professionally, I’m a lawyer, and have had to leave my job because I passed out (昏迷), drunk in front of my computer. I’ve taken some medicine and it has helped somewhat. I can manage about a month without drinking, but after that I end up having a crazy stage where nothing matters except drinking. After a week or so of heavy drinking, I start having nightmares of people jumping. After that, it’s a week of not being able to get out of bed.

I was supposed to travel to a conference but didn’t make it because I got so drunk at the airport that I fell down on my face and spent the rest of the day in the emergency room. I have

been hiding from my family since then. Fortunately they won’t be expecting me to come back for a week or so. Otherwise, they would notice the bump (包) on my forehead and two black eyes.

I don’t really know what I’m asking you about. Cary, I need a way out that doesn’t cause pain to my family. I’m taking medicine, but I still have these attacks every few months. If there’s alcohol in the house, I can’t stay away from it. It seems that this will never end. I’m worried about what will happen if something bad happens, like a family member dying, or getting fired again.

Thanks for reading.

Yours T

Lots of people get nervous when talking in front of the class or get laughed at if they make a mistake in front of an audience. 71 At times, your body produces “stress hormones(荷尔蒙)” that can actually help you focus.

But when worry and stress about performing get to be too much, these hormones give people that “red alert (紧急状态)” feeling ----the one that causes you to feel cold or sweaty, or get butterflies in your stomach. 72

Be prepared. 73 Rehearse (排练) as much as you can and practice in front of others at every opportunity. Most of all, think positively. Tell yourself “I’ll be OK” or “I can do this” even if you are not 100% sure of it.

Look after yourself. Before big performances, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself because you spend too much time on rehearsals and practice. 74 Exercise can also help you feel good, and along with sleep and nutrition, it is an excellent way of keeping those stress hormones from getting out of control.

Find out what the experts do. You can find books, DVDs, and online information about how to give your best when you perform, depending on what type of performance you’re preparing for.

75 Or ask the cast(演员) of your school play or your drama or music teacher how they beat stage fright. And if your parents or grandparents ever performed, they may have their own secrets to share.

A. Confidence helps beat stress hormones.

B. The following tips can help you avoid that feeling.

D. You c an do this whether you’re performing alone or as part of a group.
