Several years ago, a television reporter was talking to three of the most important people in America. One was a very rich banker, another owned one of the largest companies in the world, and the third owned many buildings in the center of New York.

The reporter was talking to them about being important.

“How do we know if someone is really important?” the reporter asked the banker. The banker thought for a few moments and then said,“I think anybody who is invited to the Whiter House to meet the President of the United States is really important.”

The reporter then turned to the owner of the very large company. “Do you agree with that?” she asked.

The man shook his head,“No. I think the President invites a lot of people to the White House. You‘d only be important if while you were visiting the President, there was a telephone call from the president of another country, and the President of the US said he was too busy to answer it.”

The reporter turned to the third man. “Do you think so?”

“No, I don‘t,” he said. “I don’t think that makes the visitor important. That makes the President important.”

“Then what would make the visitor important?” the reporter and the other two men asked.

His manager warns the young man that he will be sent away unless he gets to his office on time. He hopes to buy a car,but he hasn‘t enough money. He decides to buy an old one. He went to the flea (跳蚤) market and at last he chose a beautiful but cheap car. He said he wanted to have a trial (试验) drive, the seller agreed. He called Mr King and asked him to help him.

well. Then he drove fast. And when he reached a crossing, the lights turned red. He tried to stop it, but he failed and nearly hit an old woman who was crossing the street. A policeman told him to stop, but the car went on until it hit a big tree by the road.

I will always remember my mother‘s last few days in this world.

On February 14th,2000,my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school,my teacher told me to go to the headmaster ‘s office. After that,we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally,we got to see our mother. It was terrible.

On the next day,the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened.

I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside,my sister ran up to me. She started crying,“She‘s gone. Teresa, mommy’s gone. She‘s dead.” I couldn’t believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.

Today when I look back,I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is

We know mosquitoes very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. They can be found almost all over the world, and there are more than 2,500 kinds of them.

No one likes the mosquito. But the mosquito may decide if she loves you. She? Yes, she. The male mosquito doesn’t bite! Only the female mosquito bites because sh e needs blood to lay eggs. She is always looking for things or people she wants to bite. If she likes what she finds, she bites. But if she doesn’t like your blood, she will turn to someone else for more delicious blood. Next time a mosquito bites you, just remember you are chosen. You’re different from the others!

If the mosquito likes you, she lands on your body without letting you know. She bites you so quickly and quietly that you may not feel anything different. After she bites, you will have an itch(痒) on your body because she puts something from her mouth together with your blood. When the itch begins, she has flown away.

Do you know why different animals or pests(昆虫) have their special colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.

Some birds like eating locusts(蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops(庄稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But as the harvest (收获)time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by others. So they have to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.

If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears, lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters. This is because they have the colours much like the trees.

Have you ever found an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of very black liquid(液体) when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over(散开), its enemies(敌人) cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong at all.

第一章第一篇sectiong Two variables u(t) and i(t) are the most basic concepts in an electric circuit, they characterize the various relationships in an electric circuitu(t)和i(t)这两个变量是电路中最基本的两个变量,它们刻划了电路的各种关系。 Charge and Current The concept of electric charge is the underlying principle for explaining all electrical phenomena. Also, the most basic quantity in an electric circuit is the electric charge. Charge is an electrical property of the atomic particles of which matter consists, measured in coulombs (C). We know from elementary physics that all matter is made of fundamental building blocks known as atoms and that each atom consists of electrons, protons, and neutrons. We also know that the charge e on an electron is negative and equal in magnitude to 1.60210×10-19C, while a proton carries a positive charge of the same magnitude as the electron. The presence of equal numbers of protons and electrons leaves an atom neutrally charged.

The positive charge of a proton is similar to the negative charge of an electron. However, a positive charge is the opposite of a negative charge. These charges are called electrostatic charges. Each charged particle is surrounded by an electrostatic field. The effect that electrostatic charges have on each other is very important. They either repel (move away) or attract (come together) each other. It is said that like charges repel and unlike charges attract. The atoms of some materials can be made to gain or lose electrons. The material then becomes charged. One way to do this is to rub a glass rod with a piece of silk cloth. The glass rod loses electrons ( - ) , so it now has a positive ( + ) charge. The silk cloth pulls electrons ( - ) away from the glass. Since the silk cloth gains new electrons, it now has a negative ( - ) charge. Another way to charge a material is to rub a rubber rod with fur. It is also possible to charge other materials because some materials are charged when they are brought close to another charged object. If a charged rubber rod is touched against another material, the second material may become charged. 2 Remember that materials are charged due to the movement of electrons and protons. Also, remember that when an atom loses electrons ( - ), it becomes positive ( + ). These facts are very important in the study of electronics. Charged materials affect each other due to lines of force. These imaginary lines cannot be seen. However, they exert a force in all directions around a charged material. Their force is similar to the force of gravity around the earth. This force is called a gravitational field. Most people have observed the effect of static electricity. Whenever objects become charged, it is due to static electricity. A common example of static electricity is lightning. Lightning is caused by a difference in charge ( + and - ) between the earth's surface and the clouds during a storm. The arc produced by lightning is the movement of charges between the earth and the clouds. Another common

Chapter 1 1.1 What Is a Word A word can be defined as a meaningful group of letters. (一个词可以被定义为一组有意义的字母) 词包含以下几点: ① a minimal free form of a language. 一个声音统一体 ③ a unit of meaning.一个意义单位 ④ a form that can function alone in a sentence. A word is a free form of a language that has a given sound and meaning and syntactic function. Words can be simple and complex. This symbolic connection is almost always arbitrary, and there is no logical relationship between the sound and the actual thing and idea itself .The relationship between them is conventional. 1.3 Sound and Form 读音与拼写不一致的原因:①The English alphabet was adopted from the Romans, which does not have a separate letter to represent each sound in the language. ②The pronunciation has changed more rapidly than spelling over the years. ③Some of the differences were created by the early scribes.

课堂讲练: 一、“FOR THE PURPOSE(S) OF----― 1、可翻译为“为---目的“(汉译英法律文本中多见) 例1、(1)、Whoever, for the purpose of illegal possession, uses one of the following means during signing or performing a contract to obtain property and goods of the opposite party by fraud, -----, is to be sentenced to ----. (2)、This law is enacted for the purpose of protecting the legal rights and interests of the parties to contracts, maintaining the socio-economic order---. (3)、This contract is entered into by and between Party A and Party B as follows in order to arrange the matters in respect of the loan provided by Party A to Party B for the purchase of the target goods. 小结:之所以建议用“FOR”或者“IN ORDER TO”,是因为“FOR THE PURPOSE(S) OF----―在英语法律文本中的用法已经不作“为—目的”讲。 2、(1)、For the purpose of subsection (3), permission shall be in the form of a thirty (30) business day prior notice in writing ---- (2)、For the purpose of this law, ―invention –creation ―means inventions ,utility models and designs.‖ 小结:该短语的恰当译法是“就---而言”,或“为施行---(法律条款名),尤其在其后跟法规编号时,最好可译为“就该(法规编号,比如第几条、款、章)而言”。 二、“PROVIDE THAT“ “PROVIDE THAT“means: ―on condition that, if‖ 1) Provided that there is no opposition in writing by both Parties hereto at the expiration of its duration, this Contract shall be renewed automatically for one year. 2) Provided that you make adequate monetary compensation.,we shall waive our title to this land. 3、(1)、Provided that the rent in respect of the aforesaid premises is not paid in advance as stipulated by Clause 1 hereof, the tenant shall be deemed to be in arrears with the rent. (2)、Provided that the offeree makes an acceptance beyond the time limit for acceptance, it shall constitute a new offer unless the offeror notifies the offeree in time that the acceptance is effective. 1)、The Licensee shall not be entitled to start any action for the infringement on the Licensed Trademark ;provided that the Licensor may, at its own discretion and cost, prosecute or otherwise to stop or prevent such actual or threatened infringement 2)、The interest rate applicable to each loan hereunder shall be the interest rate stipulated herein; provided that we have the right, in the manner as we deem appropriate, to adjust it from to time to the extent permitted by the applicable laws or regulations. 对于作为“如果”来讲,正式的词很多,有‘WHERE“,”IN THE EVENT THAT“等,而要表示“但是”,“BUT”在法律英语中一般不用,而是“HOWEVER‘和“PROVIDE THAT“,这导致作为但书讲时,“PROVIDE

The expansion of vocabulary in modern English depends chiefly on word-formation. There is a variety of means being at work now. The most productive are affixation, compounding and conversion. According to Pyles and Algeo (1982), words produced through affixation constitute 30% to 40% of the total number of new words; compounding yields 28% to 30% of all the new words; conversion gives us 26% of the new vocabulary.
