【41】Why was the Bastille important to the citizens of Paris? The building of the Bastille had been started in 1370 under Chares V. By the seventeenth century it had ceased to be important for defense. Cardinal Richelieu turned it into a prison. It was not an ordinary prison to punish common crimes. Its huge doors closed only on enemies of the King. The Bastille's workings were secret. Prisoners were taken to it in closed carriages. Soldiers on guard duty had to stand with their faces to the wall. No talking was allowed. Worst of all, a prisoner never knew if he would be there a day, a week, a year, or forever. Only the King's letter could set him free.
Over the years the number of arrests by King's letter had become fewer. By the time of its fall, most of the prisoners were writers who had written against the corrupt deeds of the government. Voltaire the famous French writer, spent a year there in 1717-1718, and another l2 days in 1726. For those who believed in free speech and free thinking, the Bastille stood for everything evil. The day it was captured, the "Conquerors of the Bastille" found only seven prisoners inside. None the less, the Bastille was hated by the people. It was a symbol of the King's complete power.

【42】Science and new technology have made such rapid progress in agriculture that modern machines can do almost all farm work, and therefore have made it possible for farmers to produce more food on the same amount of land. When people live in plenty, vegetables and fruits are in greater need.
Can orchard workers harvest fruits with machines as farmers to crops? Yes, they can. Scientists have already invented many different fruit-harvesting machines. Now, let's take cherry-picking machine for example. The cherry-picking machine first shakes a cherry tree, then catches cherries in heavy sheets and pushes the fruit along belts. The cherries are then dropped into huge containers of water, in which they are washed clean, and look fresh and pretty when they are placed into plastic boxes which come along the belt one after another. All this work is finished within three minutes. In this way two orchard workers are able to fulfill the harvesting work of a cherry orchard within two days which was done by over one hundred workers for two weeks. Another new machine that picks tomatoes has just been invented. First it cuts the vines below
the soil. Then both the vines and the fruit are pulled into the machine which separates the tomatoes from the vines and finally returns the vines to the field.
It is believed that it will soon be possible for powerful wind machines to blow oranges off trees. New machines that are now being tested will pick apples, peaches, pears and strawberries. It is also believed that with the development of science and new technology, farm working conditions will be greatly improved, that more and more work will be done by machines instead of men and that people 's living standard will be greatly improved in the future.

【43】The journey two divers made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be studied. The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball to find out if there are any ocean currents or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the ball would come to the surface daylight, and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The drivers began preparations early in the morning and soon afterwards, when all was ready the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
The divers felt as if they were going down steps as they passed through warm and cold layers of water. In time the temperature dropped to freezing point. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone telling how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. All went well until some four hours later at 30, 000 feet, the men were frightened by a loud cracking noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the ball touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of "dust" made up of small Dead Sea creatures. Here powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the great water-pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the faint but clear voices of the divers were heard on the mother ship seven miles away. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.
The purpose of the divers' journey to the deepest point on the earth was to find________________.
