The Mona Lisa, one of the world’s most famous paintings, has been recreated with 3,604 cups of coffee—and 564 pints of milk. The different colors were created by adding no, little or lots of milk to each cup of black coffee.

The recreated Mona Lisa measured 20 feet long and 13 feet wide. It took a team of eight

people three hours to complete the work. It was created for The Rocks Aroma Festival in Sydney, Australia, and seen by 130,000 people who attended the one-day coffee-lovers event.

Elaine Kelly, one of the organizers from the Sydney Harbor Foreshore Authority, was delighted with the result. She said, “Each coffee cup was filled with different amounts of milk to create the different shades(色度) of the painting. We wanted to create a surprise and a sense of fun in the way we communicated with the public.”

“Once we had the idea of creating an image(像) out of coffee cups we searched for something iconic(有代表性的)to reproduce(复制).And after some time we chose the most iconic painting in history. The Mona Lisa has been reproduced so many times in so many different mediums but, as far as we know, never out of coffee,” Kelly continued. “Besides, the idea is practical.”

“It was fantastic. It really looked like the famous painting—the Mona Lisa. It was wonderful,” said one visitor.

After much planning it was great to see it coming together so well and the 130,000 people who attended the event certainly enjoyed it and were deeply attracted by it,” said Kelly.

41. How were the different colors of the recreated Mona Lisa created?

A. By adding different amounts of black coffee to each cup of milk.

B. By adding different amounts of milk to each cup of black coffee.

C. By using paints of different colors

D. By using different kinds of coffee

42. How large is the recreated Mona Lisa?

A. 20 square feet

B. 260 square feet

C. 564 square feet

D. 3,604 square feet

43. The event organizers chose to recreate the Mona Lisa for the following reasons EXCEPT that ______.

A. it is very easy to do so

B. the idea can be actually carried out

C. the Mona Lisa has never been reproduced out of coffee

D. the Mona Lisa is a very iconic painting in history

All areas of the world face a nurses shortage. But the shortage is most severe in developing countries. Many of their nurses move to the more developed nations for better pay, better working conditions and better chances for career development. For example, nearly 2,000 nurses left the Caribbean between 2002 and 2006.

The Caribbean nations currently have about 1 nurse for every 1,000 people. The ratio(比例) of nurses to population is about 10 times higher in the United States and countries in the European Union(EU). Now, more than 21,000 nurses who trained in the Caribbean are working in the United States, Canada and Britain.

Gaetan Lafortune is an official of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(O. E. C. D) in Paris. He says the nurses shortage also affects industrialized countries. He says, “There is concern in most O. E. C. D. countries that the number of nurses is too small to meet the demand. And what is more worrying is that their concern is sort of growing. ”Mr Lafortune says a large number of nurses are expected to retire within the next 10 years. At the same time, the health care needs of aging populations are expected to grow, intensifying the shortage of nurses.

Gaetan Lafortune said, “In the U. S. , for instance, some researchers have found that there may be a shortage of close to a million nurses by 2020. ” The United States is 1 of the 21 countries in the O. C. E. D. Gaetan Lafortune says in the recent years many of the countries increased their efforts to hire foreign nurses. As a result of that, O. E. C. D. countries were mainly exporting their shortage problem to countries that may have an even greater need for these nurses.

44.What will be the main causes of the global nurses shortage in the next 10 years?

A. The demand for nurses will decrease.

B. Many nurses will be too old to work.

C. Many rich countries will hire more foreign nurses.

At Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, the lights are controlled by sensors(传感器) that measure sunlight. They dim immediately when it’s sunny and brighten when a passing cloud blocks the sun.

A wall of windows at a University of Pennsylvania engineering building has built-in blinds (百叶窗) controlled by a computer program that follows the sun’s path. Buildings are getting smarter and the next generation of building materials is expected to do even more.

Windows co uld catch the sun’s en ergy to heat water. Sensors that measure the carbon dioxide breathed out by people in a room could determine whether the air conditioning needs to be turned up.

Many new materials and technology have been designed in the last 15 years. They are now being used in a wave of buildings designed to save as much energy as possible. They include old ideas, like “green roofs”, where a belt of plants on a roof helps the building keep heat in winter and stay cool in summer, and new ideas, like special coating for windows that lets light in, but keeps heat out.

As technologies such as sensors become cheaper, their uses spread.

The elevators at Seven World Trade Center, which is under construction in New York, use a system that groups people traveling to nearby floors into the same elevator, thus saving elevator stops. People who work in the building will enter it by swiping (刷) ID cards that will tell the elevators their floor, readouts will then tell them which elevator to use. The building also has windows with a coating that blocks heat while letting in light.

More new building materials and technology are in development. A Philadelphia building firm is now working on “smart wrap” that uses tiny solar collectors to catch the sun’s energy and transmitters (传输器) as wide as a human hair to move it. They are expected to change the face of the construction industry in the next ten years or so.

48. ________ will be developed and used in the construction industry.

A. “Green roofs” th at cool or heat buildings

B. “Smart wrap” that catches the sun’s energy

C. Sunlight-measuring sensors that control lights

D. Window coating that lets light in, but keeps heat out

49. The elevators at Seven World Trade Center are special because they can ________.

A. send people to floors with fewer stops

B. teach people how to use their ID cards

C. make people stay very cool in summer

D. help people go traveling in the building

50. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A. Buildings Are Becoming Smarter

B. Buildings Are Getting More Sunlight

C. Buildings Are Lacking in Much Energy

D. Buildings Are Using Cheaper Materials

D

The clothes you wear. The food you eat. The color of your bedroom walls. Where you go and how you get there. The people you hang around with. What time you go to bed. What do these things have in common? You’re asking. They’re just a few examples of many hundreds of things that your parents controlled for you when you were a child.

As a kid, you didn’t have a say in everything; your parents made decisions about everything from the cereal you a te in the morning to the pajamas you wore at night. And it’s a good thing, too—kids need this kind of protection on their own.

But finally, kids grow up and become teens. And part of being a teen is developing your own identity—one that is separate from your parents’. But as you change and grow into this new

person who makes his own decisions, your parents have a difficult time adjusting (调整).

In most families, it is this adjustment that can cause a lot of fighting between teens and parents. And issues like the type of friends you have or your attitudes to partying can cause bigger arguments, because your parents still always want to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.

The good news about fighting with your parents get more comfortable with the idea that their teens have a right to certain opinions. It can take several years for parents and teens to adjust to their new roles, though. In the meantime, focus on communicating with your parents.

Sometimes this can feel impossible—like they just don’t see your point of view and never will. But talking and expressing your opinions can help you gain more respect from your parents.

Keep in mind, too, that your parents were teens once and that in most cases, they can relate to what you’re going through.

51. In the first two paragraphs, the writer .

A. complains that parents control kids too much

B. proves that kids have no right to give their opinions

C. describes how carefully parents look after kids

D. explains that it is necessary for parents to control kids

52. A lot of fighting breaks out between teens and parents because .

A. parents aren’t used to losing control of kids

B. teens like to have everything decided

C. parents blame teens for not respecting them

D. teens are eager to develop their own identity

53. In the writer’s opinion, parents control teens in order to .

A. prevent them from having their own ideas

B. protect them from being hurt

C. make them respect parents in the family

D. make sure that children have a good future

54. The underlined word “this” in paragraph 6 may refer to “”.

A. arguing with friends

B. fighting with your parents

C. communicating with parents

D. adjusting to new roles

55. What might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A. What do parents control their children for?

B. How parents take care of children?

C. How to get rid of your parents’ control?

D. Why do I fight with parents so much?

We often see top students around us and everyone knows about them. Let us take Jenny as an example. She is the monitor of our class. She spends a lot of time working for our class. But she still gets good grades in all subjects. How do students like Jenny do that? When I asked her, she said, “Hard work is not the whole story. It’s not how long you sit at the desk wit h your books open. It’ s what you do while you are sitting.” Indeed, we can see many top students actually spend fewer hours on their studies than their classmates. Jenny gave me some valuable suggestions.

If your math teacher assigns(分派) five problems you should do six. If your Chinese teacher assigns eight pages of reading, you should read nine. The more you practice, the more you learn.

Studying is a matter of personal preference,so choose the way you are most comfortable with. Some people like working at night when the house is quiet, while others like doing their work early in the morning. Still others like studying as soon as they arrive home from school while the work is fresh in their minds. No matter which way suits you, try to do your best.

Studying is your business and business comes before entertainment(娱乐). When you are studying, phone calls should go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored. Studying is the only thing in your mind. Nothing can pull your attention away from what you are studying.

Studying is like eating. You chew it one bite at a time. You can plan what to do today, but don’t do too much. When you can’t finish the work you planned to do, you will feel disappointed and may lose confidence. On the other hand, you will not study well without a good plan. It all depends on how you arrange your time.

The students who hand in a clearly written paper is already half way to an A. Tidy papers are likely to get higher marks than sloppy(被泼水弄湿的) ones. When you write neatly and do your work carefully, the thoughts in your mind are clear. You are able to make fewer mistakes.

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch. The teacher is angry with you. Be careful!” When a soldier took Dutch leave, he left the army without permission. Dutch courage is the false courage produced by the effects of drinking wine. When someone has just said something you do n’t believe is true, you can say “I am a Dutch-man.” There is one expression that did come from the Dutch. That is to talk like a Dutch uncle. The Dutch were known for the strict and serious way they educated their children. 25. What did people mean by sa ying “Let’s go Dutch”? A. The guests should leave first. B. Each person should pay his or her own bill C. The food should be better next time. D. People should go to another restaurant. 26. According to the passage, the British in the 17th century ______. A. first used the word "Dutch" B. were mistaken for Dutch people C. got along well with the Dutch people D. used the word "Dutch" for something bad
