3. 你的结论。 - 3 - The soil under our feet is also getting away from us. Removal of the
natural vegetation leaves extensive tracts of land devoid of a plant cover
and susceptible to wind and water erosion. Finally, desertification is
accomplished. Four specific activities have been identified as major
contributors to the desertification processes: over-cultivation, overgrazing,
firewood gathering, and over-irrigation. Once the soil has been removed
by erosion, only the passage of centuries or millennia will enable new
soil to form.
The earth is not the human’s planet, it is our planet. It’s time to take
measures to improve the environment for both humans and other
creatures.

How to Protect Our Water
People can’t imagine life without water. Without it, the earth we live
on would be a dead one. There would be no trees, no crops, no animals
and no people. So water is considered to be next to oxygen in importance.
Although nearly three quarters of the earth’s surface is covered with
water, it is sea water and undrinkable. The demand for water is increasing,
while water resources are scarce. Agricultural production needs enormous
amounts of water, so does industry. Fortunately, people have realized this
pressing problem and are trying to find ways to salve it. First, people are
urged to economize on water. Second, measures are taken to protect
water resources.

An Application Letter
August 2nd
Dear Sir, I read your ad in the newspaper yesterday. Some people
think we should concentrate more on our studies. But I think volunteering
is great.
I not only feel good about helping others, but also get to spend time
doing what I love to do. And from volunteering I have learned many
things that I have never learned in class. So if I have an opportunity, I’d
like to visit old people’s houses to clean up for them. I’d also like to help
sick kids in hospital. I love kids and I plan to put my love to good use by
working in hospital.
