Frank Lloyd Wright probably is the greatest architect that the United States has ever produced. He was very gifted and had a natural ability to design buildings. His buildings were not only beautiful, but they were also practical a nd useful. They fit their purposes very well. Wright?s churches, for example, make people feel like thinking and praying. His office buildings make

people enjoy working, and his houses make people feel comfortable, at home. However, Fank Lloyd Wright?s bea utiful, practical and useful buildings are not the only reason that he is famous. There is another reason.

Frank Lloyd Wright is called the greatest American architect because he started an American style in architecture. Most of the architecture in the United States before Wright was really European, not American. Wright?s buildings do not look like old European buildings. They have their own style. Wright?s idea s about style are still used in the United States and in other parts of the world.

The most imp ortant idea in Frank Lloyd Wright?s Style of Architecture is that a building must fit its purpose and the land around it. His houses are often called “grass-land houses” because their lines are similar to the lines on the grassland. Both the lines of the grassland and the lines of Wright?s house are parallel to the horizon(与地平线平行), the place where earth and sky seem to meet. They are horizontal lines. Most European style houses, in contrast, have many vertical lines that form 90°angles with the horizon.

A.learned from some European countries B.not only limited to the U.S

C.no longer popular D.somewhat similar to the European style 42.Which of the following best describes the character of the houses that Wright designed?

A.They were very large and beautiful.

B.They were very comfortable.

C.They could be used as churches.

D.They were beautiful in design but not practical in use.

43.What is the most important idea in Wright?s style?

A.Architectural design should match natural surroundings.

B.A building must have grassland around it.

C.American style in architecture should be different from European?s.

D.Design should be more important than use.

44.Which of the following is NOT true about Wright?s “grass-land houses”?

A.The lines of “grass-land houses” are simi lar to lines on the grassland.

B.The lines of “ grass-land houses” are horizontal.

C.The color of the lines of “grass-land houses” is green.

D.They are different from European style houses.

45.The best title for this passage would be _________.

A.The Differences between the American and European Styles in Architecture

This year some twenty-three hundred teen-agers (young people aged from13-19) from all

over the world will spend about ten months in U. S. homes. They will attend U. S. schools, meet U. S. teen-agers, and form impressions of the real America. At the same time, about thirteen hundred American teen-agers will go to other countries to learn new languages and gain a new understanding of the rest of the world.

Here is a two-way student exchange in action. Fred, nineteen, spent last year in Germany with George's family. In turn, George's son Mike spent a year in Fred's home in America.

Fred, a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived, but after two months' study, the language began to come to him. School was completely different from what he had expected-much harder. Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took fourteen subjects instead of the six that are usual in the United States. There were almost no outside activities.

Family life, too, was different. The father's word was law, and all activities were around the family rather than the individual. Fred found the food too simple at first. Also, he missed having a car. "Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out and have a good time. In Germany, you walk, but you soon learn to like it."

At the same time, in America, Mike, a friendly German boy, was also forming his idea. "I suppose I should criticize(批评)American schools", he says. "It is far too easy by our level. But I have to say that I like it very much. In Germany we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many outside activities. I think that maybe your schools are better in training for citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two. "

The Cave of Lascaux

It was Thursday, September 12, 1940. Four French

teens were out exploring in the woods off the northern

slopes of the Pyrenees. Many years before, an old pine tree

fell and left a large hole in the ground. The teenagers were

curious and they started to explore the area and fell into one

of the most important archeological(考古的)finds of the

twentieth century!

There are over a hundred limestone(灰岩)caves in this

region of France. Some were inhabited by humans thousands and thousands of years ago. Between 15,000-17,000 years ago, humans painted lively creatures such as cows, bulls, horses, and even cats on the walls of the cave.

Why did they mark these walls? Was it to tell a story? Was it to record a famous battle? There are many mysteries and ancient secrets still waiting to be discovered in the cave of Lascaux. There were dots in many of the paintings. What do these dots mean? Were they meant to record time, a calendar? Deep in the cave, there is a drawing of a "birdman??. What does this mean? Was it a place for sacred ceremonies? No one knows for sure.

The actual cave of Lascaux was closed in 1963 due to the over-abundance of tourists visiting the site. The carbon dioxide that people were breathing out was causing damage to the fragile(易损的) cave paintings. Up till now the Lascaux cave is still closed for tourists. Only a specialist can visit the cave by a special order that must be made out almost a year in advance. Not more than six persons can enter the cave per day. Two days a week, the cave is completely closed. Due to the great interest of numerous tourists, in 1983 Lascaux II was opened for tourism. It is an exact replica of the cave of Lascaux,

Nowadays electronic dictionaries have become very popular as a study aid among middle school students. Compared with traditional dictionaries, the volume is a lot smaller. It doesn?t take up so much space and you can put one in your pocket and take it along wherever you go and refer to it whenever there is a need. That?s the most important reason why many students prefer them.

Another benefit of electronic dictionaries is that they are easy to operate, especially for beginners. With the help of an electronic dictionary, the learning process can be simplified and speeded up. Furthermore, due to its multifunction, it is also very helpful.

On the other hand, electronic dictionaries have their advantages. To begin with, in

comparison with a paper dictionary, the expressions or explanation of a word in an electronic dictionary are usually limited and there are not enough examples for us to refer to, still less idioms, illustrations (插图) and so on.

Others think constant uses of this study aid make people too much attached to the dictionary and become lazy, which will lead them to form a passive and lazy attitude towards learning.

In conclusion, I think we should use paper dictionaries in normal time and the electronic ones when necessary. Only with the aid of paper dictionaries can we master a language well indeed. [

May I have your attention, please? Now I?d like to make a speech here.

Nowadays some students have formed some bad habits. For example, some students leave the lights on in the daytime, leave the water running after they have washed, throw their food in the canteen after eating and waste paper or books can be seen everywhere. As we know, these bad habits will have a bad influen ce on our character and behavior. What?s more , they can not only increase our costs and add more financial burden to our parents, but also waste the limited resources. In order to reduce the waste, we are supposed to start with ourselves and save everything we can.

Should Students Use Electronic Dictionaries

From the passage we know that more and more students prefer to use electronic dictionaries rather than traditional dictionaries because electronic dictionaries are easy to operate and can be taken easily.

However, the disadvantages of electronic dictionaries are clear in front of me. An electronic dictionary can only show me the simple expressions and limited explanations of a word without enough examples. To make things worse, it also makes us students depend on it, and makes students become lazy.

As far as I …m concerned, we should follow what the teacher?s advice to use traditional ones in normal time and use the electronic ones as little as possible. Learning English is a hard job and I have to look up the new words, so I agree with what my teacher has told us about dictionaries: Only the traditional dictionaries can give us the real language, including its pronunciation, spelling cultural background and word studies and word formation.

On the other hand, electronic dictionaries are more expensive than traditional ones, and even they often need changing the batteries, which is a kind of pollution.

Therefore, I would like to use traditional dictionaries while learning English.

RN0.1《Darwin ' s》In his autobiography, Darwin himself speaks of his E-C:达尔文在他的自传中极其谦逊地谈到自己的智力状况。 RNO.5《Anthropology》Human beings in all times and places … RNO.6《the technology vs. genius dispute 》According to the new school of scientists E-C:
