Chinese Dialect

Languages are different all over the world. Different countries in the world speak different languages, different cities in a country also speak differently based on the mother tongue, and even different regions in a city speak totally differently. We know there are many reasons for the variety of languages after the study of Sociolinguistics. Here I want to discuss more about dialect, especially the Chinese dialect. Dialect often represents the special customs, cultural background, geographical location of a region. It is dialect that makes world language so rich and colorful, and dialect also contribute great significance in Chinese culture. Introduction

A language is typically composed of a number of dialects. Dialect refers to any regional, social or ethnic variety of a language. All language spoken by more than one small homogeneous community are found to consist of two or more dialects. The language differences associated with dialect may occur on any level of language, thus including pronunciation, grammatical, semantic, and language use differences.

(https://www.doczj.com/doc/d25162872.html,/view/582c53d73186bceb19e8bbee.html) Dialect is a form of a language spoken in a particular geographical area or by members of a particular social class or occupational group,

distinguished by its vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. (World English Dictionary)

Classification

Dialect can be divided into two parts, regional dialect and social dialect. Regional dialect is a linguistic variety used by people living in the same geographical region, the boundaries of which coincide with geographical barriers. This was caused by the lack of communication in the old days when travel was difficult. Social dialect is used to describe differences in speech associated with various social groups or classes. Whereas regional dialects are geographically based, social dialects originate among social groups and are related to a variety of factors. Social dialect could be further distinguished by gender, age, ethnic group, religion, and class. (Sociolinguistics Bernard spolsky)
