My favorite book is The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Tom lives with his aunt Polly in a quiet street of
St.Petersburg, Missouri. He's a lively and clever young boy, and he finds himself in many exciting adventures. He runs
away with his two friends, Huck Finn and Joe, to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River for several days. With
Huck he goes looking for treasure, with Becky he gets lost in a cave. And finally, they find a box of gold.
My favorite scene in the book is when everyone thinks Tom is dead. He decides to go to his own funeral. He hides
and watches for a time and then suddenly he appears. Everyone is astonished to see him but they're also pleased to see him
alive.
Tom is the hero of the story, but there are other important characters. Huck is an outsider and everyone is afraid of
him. Becky is pretty with fair hair, Joe is Tom's best friend. And Injun Joe is the bad man of the story.
The theme of the story is about children growing up. It describes how strangers are seen in small towns of America.
Finally, it talks about freedom, social rules and how people are punished for bad behavior.
Why do I think The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a great book? Mark Twain wrote the story in 1876, but it's still read
and loved by people all over the world today. And although it's only a story, Twain wrote it in the everyday English of the
southern states of America in the 19th century.so it sounds very real. Today it's thought to be one of the greatest books in
American literature. Go on-read it! I know you'll enjoy it, too.
24.Where does Tom run away with his two friends?
A. To a quiet street.
B. To a small town.
C. To an island.
D. To a forest.
25.Who is the bad man in the story?
A. Huck Finn.
B. Injun Joe
C. Becky
D. Polly.
26.How did people feel when Tom appeared at his own funeral?
A. They were surprised and happy.
B. They were surprised and sad.
C. They were worried and excited.
D. They were frightened and happy.
27.The writer writes the article to_________
A. ask us to read the book
B. tell us how popular the book is today
C. tell us when Mark Twain wrote the story
D. tell us why the story sounds very real
C
I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain’s literary heritage(文学遗产). Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK, their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are “classic” because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past. Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen’s fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories and interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up, his character changes: he becomes quite selfish and mean. Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé ran away on their wedding day. She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary. Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life. 28. Why are some novels called “classic”?
A. They stand the test of time. B. They are taught at universities. C. They are written by famous authors. D. They are translated into many languages. 29. Why is Hard Times mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. To introduce the university lessons. B. To remind people of the poverty in London. C. To let people know about what family life was like. D. To prove classic novels help people know the past. 30. What can we know about the character Miss Havisham? A. She is selfish and mean. B. She lives an unhappy life.
C. She loves wedding dresses most.
D. She becomes rich with others’ support.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why I like classic novels
B. Why some novels are classic
C. How to read classic novels
D. How to teach classic novels
D Three times a week, a group of farmers work together in a village of the Democratic Republic of the Congo(刚果共 和国).The group were planting potatoes. Nearly 200,000 persons are driven to camps in the Democratic Republic of the Congo because of conflicts(冲突 in the east. Most people there say land problems are one of the causes of the area's conflicts. So recently, large landowners have been asked to free up more of their land to farmers interested in growing crops. Is this a solution to the land problem? An organization called FOPAC is teaching this group better farming methods like planting improved vegetables in the fields. It is also showing the farmers how to remove grass instead of burning it to change grassland to field, and to use animal waste to make plants grow more successfully. Mumbere works for FOPAC as a farming adviser. He says the hills near the town are owned by Olive Lembe, the wife of Joseph Kabila. Kabila is the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Much of the land once was farmed. Mumbere says, the person Olive Lembe bought the land from last year stopped planting crops. Now, the land is mainly grassland. is now persuading farmers to grow crops on some of her land, which she has named "Hope Farm". "Hope Farm" requires farmers to make payments for use of the land, and payments are very low. Mumbere says the usual rental payment in this area for one hectare(公顷)is only$200 for a season of four months. Many people rent smaller fields of about 400m for$ 10 a season. FOPAC tries to avoid conflict with landowners and farmers. Mumbere says the farmers seemed happy with the new solution.
32.What was the purpose of asking large landowners to free up their lands to farmers?
A. To avoid conflicts.
B. To control landowners.
C. To make farmers rich.
D. To make good use of the land.
33.What did farmers use to do before they planted crops?
A. Burn grass to get new fields.
B. Use animal waste to make plants grow fast.
C. Plant improved vegetables in their field.
D. Remove grass and dead trees to protect crops.
34.What can we learn from the passage?
A. Olive Lembe sold her land to farmers.
B. The payments of "Hope Farm" are not high.
C. The country encouraged soldiers to plant crops.
D. Olive Lembe bought the land for planting potatoes.
35.What is the farmers' attitude towards the solution to the land problem?
A. Negative.
B. Positive.
