In the western Pacific Ocean lies the deepest place on the planet — the Mariana Trench, also called the Marianas Trench. But because very few humans have been able to go far into it, scientists know very little about it.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and several partners are working to change that. Since April 20, an NOAA ship called the Okeanos Explorer has been on an expedition (探险) in the Mariana Trench. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) sent out from the ship are taking videos of life in the area. Much of the area that the Okeanos is exploring has been protected since 2009 as part of the Mariana Trench National Marine Monument.
Living conditions are so severe in the Mariana Trench. It’s very dark, so the animals living there
must use senses other than sight to understand their surroundings, find food, and avoid their natural enemies. The water is also very cold — slightly above freezing — and its pressure is extremely high. That means only certain animals can live there.
So far, the expedition’s cameras have filmed a wide variety of rarely seen deep-sea creatures. They include ghost sharks, large lobsters(龙虾) and sea pigs. Perhaps the most amazing sight was a beautiful glowing jellyfish that scientists have never seen before. It was found on April 24 at a depth of more than 12, 000 feet.
Scientists hope this expedition, which ends on July 10, will help them unlock the mysteries of the Mariana Trench. They will use the information collected by the expedition to map the Marianas Trench National Marine Monument and learn about the deep-sea animals and plants found there. Experts say that this knowledge will also help scientists better understand how the deepest part of the ocean affects the rest of the world. “The ocean plays a role in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the transportation of the goods we buy — not to mention weather and climate change,” states the NOAA website. “The deep sea may also hold cures to diseases. When Tullahoma City Schools administrators started shopping for new social studies textbooks in 2013, they were disappointed to find only a few options suitable for new Tennessee state standards. Rather than wait for newer textbooks to be released, the district embarked on (着手) the ambitions project of creating its own.
Two years later, the result is a series of social studies and math textbooks that students can access from any digital device, and that teachers can easily personalize for their classroom.
What’s more, the district created the books using all free online curriculum resources. “One thing we think is a really big selling point is the books can be as minimal as just text or as rich and interactive as we want to make them,” Superintendent Dan Lawson says. District leaders have also included simulations(模拟) and videos so parents can refresh their knowledge of math and other concepts when helping with homework, Lawson says.
Because the books can be updated instantly, teachers can integrate (综合) current events to make
content more relevant for students, Lawson says. The district expects to replace 80% to 85% of its textbooks in the next years with free digital content created within the school district.
The amount of free online content —and free tools for developing curriculum —has skyrocketed in recent years. Teachers can access quizzes and courses from Khan Academy, include a program from CK12 to develop, modify(更改), share, and store the digital textbooks, and share lesson plans with educators across the globe on sites like sharemylesson. com, which is operated by the American Federation of Teachers.
But sorting through all the online resources can be a challenge. So it’s important for district leaders to clarify their needs and expectations before embarking on a free curriculum project or using open educational resources (OER), says Barbara Soots, OER program manager in Washington State’s Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

As the legend goes, Paul Bunyan was already huge when he was born in Bangor, Maine. When he grew older, one drag of the mighty huge axe created the Grand Canyon by the Colorado River in northwestern Arizona, while the giant footprints of his trusty companion, Babe the Blue Ox, filled with water and became Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes. But was Paul Bunyan himself a real person? The true story of this figure is a little more complicated.
Historians believe Bunyan was based in large part on an actual lumberman (伐木工人) : Fabian Fournier, a French-Canadian lumberman who moved south and got a job to lead a logging crew in Michigan after the Civil War. Six feet tall (at a time when the average man barely cleared five feet) with giant hands. Fournier went by the nickname “Saginaw Joe.”It was said that he had two complete sets of teeth, which he used to bite off wooden rails. One November night in 1875, Fournier was murdered in the lumber town of Bay City, Michigan. His death and the trial of his killer fueled tales of Saginaw Joe’s legendary life in US logging camps in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and beyond.
Over time, Fournier’s legend was mixed with that of another French-Canadian lumberman, Bon Jean. Jean had played an important role in the Papineau Rebellion of 1837, when loggers and other working men in St. Eustache, Canada, rose up against the British. The French pronunciation of Jean’s full name is believed to have evolved into the legendary giant’s surname.
The first Paul Bunyan’s story, “Round River,” made it into print in 1906, penned by journalist James Macgillivray for a local newspaper in Oscoda, Michigan. In 1912, MacGillivray worked with a poet on a Bunyan-themed poem for American Lumberman magazine, earning Paul Bunyan his first exposure across the US. Two years later, an ad campaign for Minnesota’s Red River Lumber Company featured the first illustrations of the larger-than-life lumberman. His appearance as Red River’s mascot(吉祥物) helped turn Paul Bunyan into a household name —and an enduring American icon(象征).
