On a cold winter day,a group of strangers band together to save three children.

The 30 miles of switchbacks(急转弯) that snake through the pine-covered mountains of Logan Canyon in Utah are enough to make most drivers' hands sweat.

But Roger Andersen,a 46-year-old father of four, wasn't expecting any trouble on the road last New Year's Eve,when he set off for an unexpected ski trip to the Bear River Mountains with

nine-year-old daughter Mia,four-year-old son Baylor, and nine-year-old neighbor Kenya Wildman.Andersen had driven through the canyon hundreds of times over the years.

“We ski in that area at least 20 times a year,” says Andersen.“I know the spots t hat ice up a lot in the winter.”

The weather was glorious for hitting the slopes—30 degrees and sunny—but the higher they drove, the slicker(滑溜溜的) the roads became.Rounding a sharp turn at mile maker 473,Andersen saw a truck that had skated off the road and tapped his brakes(刹车) suddenly. In an instant, the Honda Accord was sliding at 25 miles per hour toward the shoulder of the highway, then slipping down a steep ten-foot embankment(路堤) toward the cold Logan River. As it hit the water, the car tipped toward the passenger side, hesitated, and then rolled onto its roof and sank into the river.

There was no time to tell the kids what to do.The crash had broken a few windows, and within seconds, the cab of the upside-down car was filled with water.“It was frightening ho w fast we were completely underwater,” remembers Andersen,a soft-spoken product development manager.“You're thinking,‘Is this how it's all going to end?'”

Then,Andersen began to search the freezing water for the kids.Mia had been right next to him in the front seat;now,in the blackness,he couldn't find her.“I thought,if I don't get out, maybe none of us is going to get out.” Andersen untied his seat belt, swam through a broken window, and gasped for air at the surface. That's when he saw a group of men, about ten in all, appear at the top of the embankment. One after another, they jumped into the water, shouting,“Who else is in the

car?”Andersen says respectfully,“It was like the sight of angels.”

1.Which word can best describe the feelings of most drivers when driving on this slope? A.Nervous. B.Curious.

C.Excited. D.Puzzled.

2.What Andersen says in Paragraph 4 shows that ______.

3.How did Andersen escape from the crashed car at last?

A.He was saved with the help of some passers-by.

B.He swam out of a broken window.

C.He broke a window nearby.

D.He drove his car out of the water.

4.Andersen's attitude toward these men's rescuing the children might be that of______.

One of those big social networking sites,Facebook, has attracted over 58 million

https://www.doczj.com/doc/d018107053.html,mentator Melody Cramer is no longer one of them. Here is what she shares with us about her story.

I deleted all 1,281 of my co-workers,second-grade classmates and people who I don't know at all.I shut down my account, completely.I'm 25,and I've been on Facebook since March of 2004,which makes me one of the website's earliest users.

At first,I used it obsessively. If I had a free moment,I'd log on to see whether my friends had updated their profiles.I'd sit alone scrolling through these updates and then run into someone at a coffee shop and have nothing to say because I already knew everything about them, and they knew everything about me.

In November,I went to my five-year high school reunion and was not pleasantly https://www.doczj.com/doc/d018107053.html,uren became a model,Josh went to law school,Dina was a teacher.I hadn't talked to any of them since graduation, but I knew exactly what they were doing, both now and last week. But lately,I'm overwhelmed(应接不暇).Facebook opened up to everyone, not just college students, and my

co-workers started to join, which meant they now knew what I was doing when I wasn't at work. And as a rule: you can NOT make friends with your coworkers because then they'll ask you the next day.But I thought we were friends. And you are friends but not the kind of friends who tell each other what they do outside of work.So now the people you work with can see what you did last night, and you're constantly worrying what people might say about what you did last night instead of actually doing anything tonight.

So I quit.I became a 25-year-old Luddite,a person who is strongly against technology development.I've retuned to how the world worked when I was 20,before I knew when my friends and co-workers were counting down the seconds to vacation or wistful(伤感的) or entering a complicated relationship.I'm hoping life will be a lot simpler now.People will be more mysterious now that I actually have to talk to them to find out their favorite books or hobbies or neurosis(神经症).I don't know when my college roommate goes to the supermarket, and I think I'm a better person for not knowing. In fact, you could say getting off a social network was the best thing I've done this week.

A.She has learnt a lot from Facebook on communication skills.

B.She wishes that she could be several years younger.

When milk arrived on the doorstep

When I was a boy growing up in New Jersey in the 1960s,we had a milkman delivering milk to our doorstep. His name was Mr.Basille.He wore a white cap and drove a white truck. As a 5-year-old boy,I couldn't take my eyes off the coin changer fixed to his belt.He noticed this one day during a delivery and gave me a quarter out of his coin changer.

Of course,he delivered more than milk. There was cheese, eggs and so on.If we needed to change our order,my mother would pen a note——“Please add a bottle of buttermilk next delivery”—and place it in the box along with the empty bottles. And then, the buttermilk would magically appear.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen.Mr.Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors,so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr.Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery. There is sadly no home milk delivery today.Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk,

thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete.Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practical to have a delivery service.

Recently,an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories.I took it home and planted it on the back porch(门廊).Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is.So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

A.to show his magical power

B.to pay for the delivery

C.to satisfy his curiosity

D.to please his mother

2.What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house?

A.He wanted to have tea there.

B.He was a respectable person.

C.He was treated as a family member.

D.He was fully trusted by the family.

3.Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A.Nobody wants to be a milkman now.

B.It has been driven out of the market.

C.Its service is getting poor.

D.It is forbidden by law.

4.Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A.He missed the good old days.

B.He wanted to tell interesting stories.

C.He needed it for his milk bottles.

D.He planted flowers in it.

Asthma(哮喘) is a long-lasting breathing disease that affects millions of Americans, many of whom are children. People who get asthma will suffer from lack of breath, difficulty in breathing or coughing---which are caused by the tightening of the muscles in airways. Untreated asthma can lead

to poor lung function and death, but asthma can also be effectively controlled with proper treatments.

Research is discovering genes that contribute to the development of asthma. This development has pointed researchers to the role of indoor and outdoor pollution as environmental factors that contribute to the increased occurrence of asthma.

The Indoor Pollution

Indoor pollution has increased with the developments in building materials and in heating and air conditioning systems. In addition to poisonous gases that come from paint, other materials like dust and perfumes used in household products such as washing powder are recycled continuously through the house, winter and summer.

Unlike the days before central heating or before whole-house air conditioning, these materials and chemicals cannot get out of modern homes. Most often, they cause breathing problems in the members of the family with the least-developed autoimmune(自身免疫的) systems. Proper venting (通风)and use of environmentally-friendly building materials and carpeting can help reduce the presence of these chemicals.

The Out door pollution

Researchers have also established outdoor pollution’s role as a probable cause of asthma. Asthma has been proven to result from some fuel products. Smog and the small matters carried by it have been recognized as a factor which leads to asthma since the 19th century when London saw more and more diseases in the industrial population. Industrial pollutants and other chemicals which are produced in water treatment and open treated water like that found in the swimming pools also contribute to increased cases of asthma as well as other illnesses.

Those most affected by the increase of industrial and environmental pollution are children. Although much has been done to control the levels of pollution in the US, there still remains much to do as it is a worldwide phenomenon. Until an international effort can be made to limit carbon emissions, the occurrence of environmental asthma will probably continue to increase.

The __1__ between asthma and air pollution

The __2__ of asthma

● lack of breath ● difficulty in breathing ● coughing

The possible __3__ of untreated asthma ● poor lung function ● death

__4__ contributing to the increased asthma

Indoor pollution

●It is __5__ by building materials and heating and air conditioning systems.

●__6__ some poisonous gases, dust and perfumes worsen pollution.

●Some material and chemicals __7__ in modern homes.

Outdoor pollution ●Smog and the small matters carried by it cause asthma, which is proven by a(n) __8__ number of

lung diseases in the industrial population.

●Industrial pollutants and other chemicals in water are __9__ to people’s health.

Conclusion Only when all countries join together to limit carbon emissions can people be __10__ from suffering environmental asthma.

A.Accept life as it is

B.Live in the moment

C.Put in the required effort

D.Get to know your problems

E.Work on what you really want

F.Turn challenges into opportunities

Life is a hard and long climb, but the journey is rewarding. It's just a matter of pushing forward when the going gets tough. Here are five tips to help inspire you when you need it most.

1.________

Lack of focus, not lack of ability,is the most common problem that holds people back from their potential. If you find it difficult to deal with where you are,or how life is treating you,it's time to change your focus.Start focusing on what you want going forward.Set a specific goal, keep your work centered on it,and you'll find the strength to move ahead in a positive direction. When you focus on the right thing, even the difficult steps will seem easier. The burdens of the moment become much more bearable when you connect with the purpose behind them.

2.________

By all means, find ways to be more efficient in your work. But make no mistake that it takes efforts to build something worthwhile. There are certainly some stories about people who succeeded rather quickly, but you will usually find they had put in years of related work long before anyone was paying attention to their seemingly rapid success. In other words, their achievement is simply all those years of work coming together. As Einstein once said,“Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work.” You must run to be a runner. You must write to be a writer. You must work to achieve high.

3.________

What is the difference between a problem and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it.Every opportunity has a difficulty, and every difficulty has an opportunity. When you see problems piled on top of problems, what are you really seeing? You're looking at a mountain of opportunity. You're looking at a situation in which you can truly make a difference. You're looking at an environment where you can reach great heights by pulling the reality of what's possible along with you. When you look at a problem, but see opportunity instead, you can transform grief into greatness.

4.________

Regardless of what has happened in the past or what might happen in the future,it's being here now that's important. We can gain experience from the past, but we can't edit it; we can hope for the future, but we don't know if it will ever come. The only life you can live is the moment you are in right now.Don't pretend that you're living in some other time and place.Start paying attention to the present.Start paying attention to your life.Say yes to the life you're living and notice how it starts to flow with you rather than against you.

5.________

Find peace in the thought that you can't ever have it all or know it all.You are always just a small part of the whole. If you weren't,there would be nothing more to experience.Value what you know, and also value the countless things you don't yet understand. For in what you do not understand, there is the joy of growth.Life will always be incomplete and sometimes unfair.Realize this and accept it.Be happy and sad at the same time,be hungry and thankful at the same time,be nervous and excited at the same time, and be okay with it.

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
